[22:14:21] <toastydeath> andypugh, that's a badass toolroom lathe
[22:14:52] <toastydeath> with lathes especially I totally understand the beautification process - there's so much more character to lathes than mills
[22:18:30] <unfy> ^
[22:19:12] <unfy> malcom: i'll get you an update mid / early next week after thrust bearings arrive. although it might be the weekend after that etc (gotta build/attach the thing they'll squeeze against)
[22:20:12] <malcom2073> Cool, I'll be interested to see it
[22:26:34] <unfy> I'll have to get a complete parts list as well. i know that there are always folks wondering about building a cheap machine etc, but it's a lot of talk and no actual demonstrations etc.
[22:26:43] <unfy> or finding one off custom deals that make things cheap, etc.
[22:26:52] <unfy> there is /nothing/ special about this machine.
[22:27:26] <unfy> well, i did braze the angle aluminum together instead of using a prefab motor mount bracket, but whatever.

[22:42:09] <andypugh> toastydeath: Have you seen my shiny living-room lathe?
[22:42:21] <toastydeath> neg?
[22:42:36] <Lowridah> i need a lathe
[22:43:07] <Lowridah> i like how simple this approach is
[22:43:07] <Lowridah> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXIy7EX2vCY
[22:43:10] <andypugh> toastydeath:
https://picasaweb.google.com/108164504656404380542/Rivett#5978884791542655522
[22:43:24] <toastydeath> damn, nice
[22:43:35] <toastydeath> that's a great stand, too
[22:44:19] <malcom2073> Lowridah: I wonder how they compensate for backlash
[22:44:25] <malcom2073> Most lathes have a hell of a lot in the screw
[22:44:31] <malcom2073> They're only meant to be accurate in a single direction
[22:44:41] <malcom2073> Or rather, not meant to be accurate reverseing
[22:44:55] <andypugh> It’s prettty unusual for a lathe cut to change the direction of applied force
[22:45:19] <andypugh> So, you can write the G-code to make moves like you would for manual use.
[22:45:28] <malcom2073> You can write the gcode like such, true
[22:45:40] <malcom2073> but it's not unusual for it to move the cross slide both out and in in one operation
[22:45:48] <malcom2073> for a cnc
[22:46:34] <malcom2073> I think that's a pretty slick concept though for quickly adding cnc capability
[22:47:18] <andypugh> reversible and non-destructive too. Though blocks of wood is a bit rough.
[22:47:31] <malcom2073> Ah the comments address it
[22:47:49] <malcom2073> "i I always set depth in one direction. I overshoot material safe and set depth in the few areas that's needed."
[22:48:26] <malcom2073> If I had a hundred or so items I had to make that could be done that way, I could see myself doing such a thing in a weekend to avoid having to A: make the parts, and B: buy a full cnc lathe
