[00:00:03] <malcom2073> I'd be lucky to be allowed to buy a $475 machine for christmas :P
[00:00:24] <malcom2073> markvandenborre: Depends on the size/weight of the machine
[00:00:36] <markvandenborre> I'm obviously not talking Soviet style 20 ton machinery

[00:00:53] <yasnak> something that size tho, you're gonna want weight to reduce chatter in the frame
[00:00:54] justanotheruser is now known as justanlobster
[00:01:00] <malcom2073> No, but a professional router isn't going to weigh the $300lbs that aluminum one is
[00:01:07] <malcom2073> 300lbs*

[00:05:41] <jthornton> say goodnight Gracie
[00:05:42] <markvandenborre> now that we're talking hardware... anything Chinese that might be somewhat half decent quality?
[00:06:28] <markvandenborre> (both in terms of linuxcnc compatible drives and pure mechanics)

[00:11:55] * markvandenborre feels like he has said something very wrong
[00:12:19] <markvandenborre> like saying "open source" to Richard Stallman
[00:12:28] <kengu> pretty wide subject
[00:12:48] <malcom2073> Heh, yeah
[00:13:11] <malcom2073> I've had good luck with 6600 chinese drives
[00:13:37] <malcom2073> Though I've not tried anything larger, my nema34 drives are not chinese
[00:17:38] <markvandenborre> hm, for most nema34, you would need something more powerful I read

[00:22:12] <jthornton> is not bad
[00:22:25] <jthornton> tb6560 is delicate
[00:24:52] <markvandenborre> ...but if I understand correctly, the drive is not something extremely problematic
[00:25:27] <markvandenborre> and I could basicly connect something like

[00:25:29] <zeeshan> if you're building a small machine
[00:25:37] <zeeshan> theres nothing wrong with a tb6560
[00:25:39] <jthornton> leadshine is good
[00:25:54] <jthornton> just don't hot plug it lol
[00:26:04] * markvandenborre just took the first random example from ali
[00:26:35] <markvandenborre> that looked like it should be up to the task
[00:26:45] <jthornton> the tb6560 I mean don't hot plut them
[00:26:53] <zeeshan> why
[00:26:56] <jthornton> the leadshine is a good drive
[00:26:57] <zeeshan> cap goes kaboom?
[00:27:02] <jthornton> it blows the up
[00:27:05] <jthornton> them
[00:27:05] <zeeshan> haha
[00:27:07] <zeeshan> nice
[00:30:51] <jthornton> I managed to build LinuxCNC on LinuxMint 17.2 and build a deb and install it and all is happy
[00:31:10] <jthornton> including me lol
[00:32:14] <markvandenborre> very good
[00:32:21] * markvandenborre is also happy with all the feedback
[00:32:36] <markvandenborre> I have a better understanding now of (part of) what is needed
[00:32:53] <markvandenborre> thank you all for your hints and patience!

[03:05:17] <XXCoder> linuxcnc
[03:05:24] <XXCoder> you can run it without any machine
[03:05:28] <tsingi1> There :)
[03:05:54] <XXCoder> wiki has lots good info on gcode
[03:06:03] <tsingi1> I ahve two, wworking on setting up the big one, smaller one needs a new ballscrew.
[03:06:04] <XXCoder> combined, you can program and test on linuxcnc
[03:06:16] <tsingi1> Thanks XXCoder
[03:06:39] <XXCoder> theres good editors but what I suggested is free
[03:07:23] <tsingi1> I'm a graphics programmer. I want tools, but I need to larn the code. Is there an official format for GCode or is it ad hoc?
[03:07:49] <tsingi1> Linux programmer btw.
[03:08:08] <XXCoder> it depends on machine actually though more modern machines (and linuxcnc) has been standardized largely
[03:08:39] <XXCoder> for example old fadal I use E to define coordites where modern ones use g54 and so on
[03:08:40] <tsingi1> The grand machine we have is pretty old, but I've sent an email to the guy who should know the idiosyncracies.
[03:09:10] <XXCoder> I wish E was standard, makes spotting coord entries much easier.
[03:09:38] <tsingi1> OK, I should be good for now. I expect I'll be hanging out here.
[03:09:43] <XXCoder> cool
[03:10:32] <tsingi1> Cheers!

[11:19:16] <trentster> hehe *does not blame you
[11:19:48] <trentster> I will try and not drain you too much ;-)
[11:20:24] <archivist> you are stopping me from doing a job I dont want to do
[11:20:53] <trentster> Busy adding new 2.2kw spindle to my machine - its the Huanyang + VFD
[11:21:19] <trentster> Got it working nicely manually, now its time to connect to breakout board for control.
[11:22:48] <trentster> Am I correct in assuming that you only need an additional board if you plan on using pwm and need to convert signal to analog voltage, but with the brak out board we are using it has a 0-10V output included for spindle control already.
[11:23:03] <trentster> So does this mean its simply a matter of conencting it up directly to the vfd?
[11:23:36] <archivist> yes it already converts pwm to 0-10
[11:23:56] <trentster> Cool, what about fwd and reverse?
[11:24:29] <technoid> weechat
[11:25:54] <archivist> use another available pin for direction if spare
[11:26:22] <archivist> I ran out of pins grrrrrr
[11:27:41] <trentster> archivist: so with your vfd how many wires do you have/need running from break out board to VFD. 2 for 0-10V and 1 for direction? 3 total
[11:28:27] <archivist> I dont have direction
[11:28:29] <trentster> Also for coolant I presume its logical to use the relay on the VFD itself to turn the coolant pump on for the spindle? correct
[11:28:44] <technoid> damn i never realised that a parport only has 17 pins
[11:28:57] <archivist> use two ports
[11:29:52] <technoid> well im not in the situation yet, i just googled it wondering how many woud be available for my copy machine parts project
[11:31:11] <technoid> it seems really strange that there isn't a standard to have something with more gpio on all pcs

[11:46:41] <technoid> i find that plastic spoons are used up first, forks second, and knives just pile up.
[11:47:52] <technoid> the only reasonable thing to do is to gather up all the plastic knives and regrind them and injection mould yourself more spoons.

In anticipation of future incorporation into LinuxCNC , there is not a preview git branch named 'features_preview_2'.
[22:56:40] <dgarr> (the branch named 'features_preview' (no _2) is obsolete (broken). The feautures_preivew_2 branch can be tested as a build in a gitl clone and scratch debs are
