[00:29:42] <furrywolf> fastenal is rather worthless.
[00:30:32] <furrywolf> they won't have what you need in stock, so they'll order it, but you have to order 50 or 100 at a time, and they charge you for shipping, even though it comes on their freight truck with their regular order.
[00:31:19] <zeeshan|2> lol at least they order it for you
[00:31:26] <zeeshan|2> here they wont even talk to you unless you're a "registered business"
[00:31:35] <zeeshan|2> (was trying to order shit for school)
[00:31:44] <zeeshan|2> but from the sounds of it
[00:31:48] <zeeshan|2> there are some good locations
[00:31:49] <zeeshan|2> not all are shit
[00:31:53] <furrywolf> but despite the allusion to "all" in the name, they actually don't have any better selection than the hardware store can order.
[00:32:41] <furrywolf> in other news, I just got one of the eu6500ises running... needs a tuneup, as it surges badly at low low loads, but it ran a 5000W test load with no major issues.
[00:33:02] <furrywolf> also, it's now the THIRD generator I've found with a broken off gas can spout inside the tank. I hate california. hate.
[00:33:58] <furrywolf> see, in all the normal states, a spout is a piece of plastic or metal. it's simple, and it works. but not in california. nooooo. in california, spouts are required to be multi-part assemblies with valves and vapor recovery.
[00:34:15] <furrywolf> the end result being they spill all over, every time you use them, and then break and dump gas all over.
[00:34:24] <furrywolf> causing about a thousand times the pollution they're supposed to prevent.
[00:35:51] <zeeshan|2> lol
[00:35:54] <zeeshan|2> cali spec emission
[00:35:55] <zeeshan|2> game over
[00:37:18] <furrywolf> http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/11/07/1342736/-Has-anyone-purchased-a-new-gas-can-lately
[00:38:10] <furrywolf> "The new gas cans with CARB-compliant spouts require three hands (at a minimum) to operate, inevitably cause the user to spill far more gasoline with each refuel of a lawn mower than he managed to spill over the previous decade in total" my experience completely confirms this statement.
[00:40:11] <malcom2073> I wonder if anyone sells the old style solid plastic totally open spouts
[00:40:22] <furrywolf> not legally. :)
[00:40:34] <furrywolf> however, tractor supply has a shelf of them... "replacement water can spouts" :P
[00:40:38] <malcom2073> Lol
[00:40:39] <malcom2073> Nice
[00:40:51] <malcom2073> Sorta like "offroad use only" tags on car stuff
[00:40:52] <malcom2073> love it
[00:41:06] <furrywolf> you're supposed to screw them to the blue water cans. however, they have the same thread, are the same shape, made from the same plastic...
[00:41:34] <malcom2073> I'd like to think that's intentional, but who knows nowadays
[00:42:50] <os1r1s> _methods: You use radius mode on your lathe, right?
[00:43:58] <_methods> i have used radius and diameter
[00:44:20] <_methods> personally i prefer radius
[00:45:39] <os1r1s> _methods: I'm trying to gfigure out homing switches on the lathe. So you would set X as a min switch at X0, but Z at the max
[00:46:07] <furrywolf> where do you home a lathe to when you have a cutoff tool mounted on the backside of the table?
[00:46:09] <_methods> well i would set them at max dist away from spindle
[00:46:23] <_methods> max x+ and max z+
[00:46:26] <os1r1s> So on a 3.5x17 lathe, you would use X0 with a range of 0-1.75 and Z at Z17 with a range of 0-17
[00:46:44] <_methods> yeah
[00:46:53] <os1r1s> But you prefer X max?
[00:47:05] <_methods> i would have home to x max yeah
[00:47:11] <_methods> you don't want to home towards the spindle
[00:47:35] <os1r1s> Gotcha
[00:47:50] <os1r1s> But as long as the sequence is Z,X, I would think it would be ok
[00:48:05] <_methods> i normally do x then z
[00:48:11] <os1r1s> But its the total range cut in half that I was most curious about.
[00:48:17] <_methods> move away from the spindle then towards tailstock
[00:48:27] <os1r1s> I've not had homing on a lathe yet :)
[00:48:29] <furrywolf> I don't know if I'll even implement homing in lathe mode... too many unpredictable things to hit on my machine.
[00:49:40] <_methods> well i've had more crashes on lathes than mills ill tell you that
[00:49:47] <_methods> you can get in trouble real fast
[00:51:06] <_methods> i'm guessing you dont have a turret on that lathe though
[00:51:11] <_methods> so that makes things a little less crazy
[00:51:24] <furrywolf> heh
[00:51:37] <furrywolf> I have a lathe/mill combo machine... there's annoyingly many ways to hit things while homing.

[00:55:23] <JT-MOBILE> I updated one of my cans with that
[00:55:37] <Rab> Both made from HDPE, I guess the only difference is white/black.
[00:55:59] <furrywolf> I think the only difference is the color.
[00:56:25] <furrywolf> they only had the water can one at the TSC here, probably because it's california. fit my plastic gas can perfectly.
[00:56:40] <furrywolf> they even come with a new vent, so you can drill a hole in your ventless can and push it in. :P
[00:58:13] <Rab> One must wonder when they'll start selling 100W edison-base space heaters.
[00:58:38] <JT-MOBILE> lol
[00:58:50] <furrywolf> that happen to have high-temperature tungsten heating elements in an evauated envelope?
[00:58:56] <furrywolf> evacuated
[00:59:20] <Rab> Indeed, with high-visibility activity indicator.
[00:59:39] <furrywolf> actually, modern LED lamps are getting pretty good. I don't have any incandescent lamps anymore.
[01:00:15] <furrywolf> CFLs are garbage, old LEDs are garbage, but the new LED lamps are perfectly usable, and quite cheap. Costco currently has 3-packs of 60W equivalent LED lamps for $10.something.
[01:00:21] <Rab> Neither do I. Seems like an insane way to use power.
[01:01:18] <Rab> A little more justifiable in the northern US states.
[01:01:34] <furrywolf> http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/no-spill-inc-2-1-2-gal-gas-can-carb-compliant?cm_vc=IOPDP1 I have one of those... it's the least-evil of the california gas cans.

[13:51:24] <lair82_> Good Morning Guys, I am having problems on my machine, last week we started noticing that when we would try to load a program, there would be nothing in the nc_files folder, when there are over 100 programs. I would shut Linuxcnc down, and there would be zero icons on the desktop, not my shortcut link start linuxcnc, none of the folders that would normally be there, nothing. I would manually shut the pc down, with the pushbutton on
[13:51:48] <lair82_> about 10 seconds, and it wouldn't boot linux, it would just go to the bios for the MB. I thought the HD took a poop, so I installed a fresh ubuntu build on a new HD, re built my build, and now today it is showing similar symptoms, any thoughts?
[13:52:55] <lair82_> CaptHindsight, everything was dis-appearing
[13:53:14] <CaptHindsight> lair82_: but maybe a bad MB, bad RAM, are you using PASSWORD for password and accessing facebook with it?

[13:54:16] <CaptHindsight> is it a hardware problem or gremlins
[13:54:38] <lair82_> I do have full internet access on this, the password is milacron
[13:55:00] <fenn> please don't tell people your password
[13:55:01] <membiblio> lair82_ - don't share your pw - so this is a issue I have been thinking about too
[13:55:19] <lair82_> it is only used on this turning center,

[13:55:28] <membiblio> lair82_ - Is your machine behind a regular router - one that does out but not in without opening ports?

[13:56:30] <membiblio> lair82_ - when you start work again - copy your /home/x directory to something else - so at least you have a backup
[13:56:40] <membiblio> lair82_ - did you examine log files?
[13:57:18] <lair82_> Everything was missing, I could not open up any of the drop down boxes, it was like the I unhooked the HD and the desktop background was all that was left.

[13:58:36] <lair82_> I could not access anything
[13:58:36] <membiblio> lair82_ - rebuild your machine, make it work, copy home directory for safety, disconnect the machine from the network first.
[13:59:05] <membiblio> lair82_ - That does sound like a bad drive - you could put in another machine and access SMART diagnostics - do you know about SMART?
[13:59:23] <lair82_> No I do not,

[14:01:12] <membiblio> lair82_ so we cat /etc/issue - you know how to do that ?

[14:02:17] <membiblio> lair82_ - yes
[14:02:38] <membiblio> lair82_ - it gets written created on boot to show people what OS they are using
[14:03:06] <furrywolf> I've yet to ever have smart actually detect a problem.

[14:13:44] <CaptHindsight> my favorite story about mysterious hardware problems was the one about a system that would randomly go down in the middle of the night
[14:14:26] <lair82_> "Errors were found while checking the disk for / " is what it does when trying to boot, I can press "I" to ignore, "S" to skip, or "F" to fix.
[14:14:48] <CaptHindsight> after a few day/weeks of debugging someone decided to stay at the office overnight, ends up the cleaning crew would unplug the power cord to plug in a vacuum

[14:15:37] <membiblio> lair82_ So you want to choose Fix

[14:17:02] <furrywolf> I'd suggest simply getting a new hard drive, doing a completely fresh linuxcnc install onto it, then putting your old drive in as a second drive, and salvaging any files you can find on it.
[14:17:05] <lair82_> The HD is still in the problem machine.
[14:17:07] <CaptHindsight> lair82_: are you currently using the new drive or the first drive that gave you this problem?
[14:18:45] <membiblio> lair82_ Stay with the problem machine - Is this the original drive or a new drive in the problem machine?
[14:19:09] <lair82_> This is the new drive, I did a fresh build from a from a fresh download cd, I made a new cd off of the linuxcnc downoad page first off last week, and that is what I used. The only files I copied over where my config files, and the nc program files.
[14:19:42] <membiblio> lair82_ - Can you disconnect this machine from the network for a while?

[15:20:24] <trentster> e.g I have been cutting aluminium at a very slow feed and speed and I figured out I could be going way faster. But I don't like ruining stock finding out the hard way
[15:20:33] <membiblio> lair82_ So you are looking for 'extra' users - that can login remotely in /etc/passwd and in /etc/services you are looking for shells or ftp or ssh attached to weird ports that you never set up

[15:21:10] <membiblio> lair82_ - after a clean install you can copy those files someplace safe and then just do a binary compare with the originals to give you some confidence that all is aok

[16:40:21] <lair82_> I have that amd running both ubuntu and debian
[16:40:55] <mozmck> I did some tests with an MSI board and an A6 CPU and the latency was not great.
[16:42:04] <lair82_> I believe it is the stock rtai on the ubuntu, and it is the preempt-rt on the debian machine. I would have to go look again to see what the numbers are, it was almost 6 months ago when I set ehm up.
[16:42:57] <mozmck> Ok, just curious. I wonder if the motherboard and chipset have somewhat to do with it. Not many options in the MSI bios for turning stuff off either.
[16:45:09] <CaptHindsight> mozmck: are you wondering about latency times on AMD with preempt_rt or those APU's or?
[16:47:07] <CaptHindsight> memleak got RTAI on the APU's under 10uS, he's actually done quite a lot of all the new RTAI development
[16:47:34] <CaptHindsight> mozmck: which A6?
[16:48:16] <mozmck> A6 7400K
[16:48:17] <CaptHindsight> Linuxcnc is still using RTAI from 2 years ago before all the fixes
[16:48:42] <mozmck> I'm using a 7i92 so it has to be preempt-rt for that.
[16:49:04] <pcw_home> With DPLL position sampling, even a few hundred usec of latency is OK
[16:49:57] <CaptHindsight> pcw_home: how far into the msec range can you go now? :)
[16:49:58] <mozmck> I'd like to play with building a newer generic kernel with rtai for Ubuntu 14.04 sometime. Not much extra time right now (somewhere in the red actually)
[16:50:19] <mozmck> pcw_home: I'll have to check that board again then - it might work ok.
[16:50:34] <pcw_home> well at 250 Hz update maybe 1 ms or so
[16:50:49] <mozmck> I may try and ASRock board as people seem to be getting good results with them.
[16:51:36] <pcw_home> Best I have seen is the H97+G3258 (but fan of course)
[16:52:05] <CaptHindsight> mozmck: we were using Asrock since they have some with coreboot support
[16:53:20] <mozmck> pcw_home: I tried an H81+G3260 and it was not nearly as good as your results. It is a different MB chipset (MSI brand) and I guess a slightly older CPU.
[16:53:45] <pcw_home> if you get too slow on the servo thread (assuming stepgens so perfect velocity mode servo)

[17:55:25] <PetefromTn_> I have not been able to get more than 2 amps or so from this unit
[17:55:42] <PetefromTn_> is it possible that it is because I don't have enough parts in the bath at one time?

[17:55:56] <furrywolf> is it switching to CV mode?
[17:55:57] <ssi> it's probably because it won't make enough voltage to overcome the resistance
[17:56:08] <ssi> CC supplies are only CC if the resistance is low enough for its voltage range
[17:56:30] <PetefromTn_> so does that mean I should try maybe three parts in the bath?
[17:56:42] <archivist> FinboySlick, was getting "some" vibration of the bench that a supply exploded
[17:56:44] <CaptHindsight> PetefromTn_: I was just going to say 4
[17:56:59] <furrywolf> if it's switching to CV mode, then yes, it could be not enough parts. If it's staying in CC mode and just sucking, then... well, it sucks.
[17:57:08] <PetefromTn_> I don't know if I can do 4 because don't you run into shadowing to the cathodes?

[18:31:44] <PetefromTn_> Okay Parts are cookin!!
[18:32:15] <furrywolf> good, that gives you three hours to drive to town and find a multimeter. :P
[18:33:48] <PetefromTn_> just opened the meter I have here
[18:34:01] <PetefromTn_> the two fuses are different of course
[18:34:17] <PetefromTn_> the one is labeled 250ma/250v
[18:34:35] <PetefromTn_> the other is not labeled and appears to require desoldering etc.
[18:35:01] <furrywolf> the 250ma one is going to be every scale but 10A...
[18:35:02] -!- jdqx has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[18:35:07] <furrywolf> I've never seen a soldered 10A fuse. that's odd.

[18:36:04] <membiblio> What is the trick to using a pyvcp.button? Have panel.xml loaded from [DISPLAY] section of x.ini and in custom.hal have net my-net1 <= pyvcb.button
[18:37:19] <membiblio> and in linuxcnc the button pyvcp.button exists in HAL under Machine -> Show HAL -> pins -> pyvcp
[18:37:21] <PetefromTn_> I took the fuse out and tried to check it with the meter and the fuse appears to be good
[18:37:40] <furrywolf> the 250ma one?
[18:37:45] <furrywolf> or the unlabeled one?
[18:38:05] <PetefromTn_> the 250ma one the other one I would have to desolder something to remove
[18:38:29] <furrywolf> and you only have this one meter that works?

[18:38:55] <PetefromTn_> you say that like it is a bad thing ;)
[18:39:29] <furrywolf> well, get unsoldering, then. :P
[18:39:45] <furrywolf> or short the fuse with a piece of wire and see if it then measures current
[18:40:02] <jdh> if it works, why do you havr to solder on it
[18:40:22] <PetefromTn_> http://i.imgur.com/THWFmrt.jpg
[18:40:27] <furrywolf> jdh: it works in every scale except 10A. (unless pete used it wrong)
[18:41:29] <membiblio> nevermind - must be in custom_postgui.hal not custom.hal
[18:41:30] <membiblio> :)
[18:42:29] <furrywolf> twist a scrap of thin wire (such as a few strands from some stranded wire) around the leads on both ends of the fuse
[18:42:45] <furrywolf> put it back together enough to test, test.
[18:42:50] <membiblio> furry.... bad boy
[18:43:19] <PetefromTn_> as you can see from the picture the other fuse is sorta permenent
[18:43:35] <archivist> scrunched up tinfoil ftw :)
[18:44:08] <furrywolf> yes. on the soldered-in fuse, twist a few strands from some stranded wire on the leads on either end of the fuse.
[18:44:21] <furrywolf> they'll make an acceptable fuse for testing.
[18:44:40] <PetefromTn_> wierd
[18:44:49] <_methods> only for people without soldering irons lol

[18:46:05] <furrywolf> PetefromTn_: leads have resistance, banana jacks have resistance, the contact between the two probes has resistance, and offset errors are hard to get rid of. :)
[18:46:28] <PetefromTn_> even in 2M mode I get .009
[18:46:40] <furrywolf> for example, yesterday I measured 13mV between two lugs bolted together tightly with a 5/16 stainless bolt...

[18:49:05] <furrywolf> for $22 that sounds acceptable.
[18:49:47] <furrywolf> it's probably not much better than a harbor freight mid-range one, but it probably has better QC...
[18:49:53] <PetefromTn_> well I have two parts simmering in the bath here
[18:50:01] <PetefromTn_> I have the PPS set to 1.2 amps
[18:50:20] <PetefromTn_> which is PROBABLY somewhere in the 3.5 amp range in reality if anything we tested previously is correct
[18:50:23] <jdh> I think a HF probe wire would be a fine fuse.
[18:50:43] <PetefromTn_> and the bubbling and offgassing on the parts APPEARS to be going well
[18:50:51] <PetefromTn_> the power supply is not getting too hot
[18:51:15] <PetefromTn_> so I am going to let it shake and bake here for another hour and 51 minutes
[18:51:26] <PetefromTn_> and then I will dye and seal them and see what happens
[18:51:53] <PetefromTn_> the good part about this whole process is that screwups are apparently easily fixed with some lye solution ;)
[18:52:09] <furrywolf> at least for parts with no critical tolerances.

[21:33:18] <SpeedEvil> Is there a term for a device that you feed a (say) 4.8*10cm*5cm beam, and out pops a beam with mortice/tenon joints in the right places?
[21:34:09] <_methods> well a tenoner will
[21:34:37] <_methods> but you'll still need to hit a morticer for that
[21:34:51] <_methods> i don't think theres a machine that does both at the same time
