[01:22:26] <LeelooMinai> furrywolf: You are like a caveman in digital era - everyone else just clicks and urls work:)
[01:23:04] <malcom2073> I got experience some military combat landings while I was overseas, it felt like the pilots were playing a game, seeing how many times they could bounce per landing
[01:23:11] <furrywolf> lol

[01:25:55] <furrywolf> some accident investigation reports are pretty interesting... usually the ones where there's a "wtf?!" technical issue.
[01:26:06] <Computer_barf> im watching this show wicked tuna and I can't help but feel they should mount a nema 34 to their reel
[01:26:15] <malcom2073> I gave in, I made my adapter printable:
http://i.imgur.com/Y0YqtZZ.png
[01:26:44] <furrywolf> I read one a while ago about a flight that landed hard because one engine was stuck at 74% and the other stuck at 17%, and not responding to throttle inputs.
[01:26:51] <Computer_barf> what is that malcom2073?
[01:27:12] <malcom2073> Computer_barf: Adapter to go between a gaseous carburator, and the intake manifold before the butterfly on my generator
[01:27:20] <malcom2073> ABS should be safe, at least for short term use
[01:28:11] <Tom_itx> unless it gets too hot
[01:28:27] <malcom2073> the intake stays fairly cool under normal use, incoming air does a pretty good job of cooling it
[01:28:30] <Tom_itx> then it may turn into fuel
[01:28:31] <Computer_barf> print it in pla and lost wax cast it
[01:28:41] <malcom2073> Computer_barf: I want a foundry!
[01:28:50] <furrywolf> the cause was salt water contamination in the fuel causing a fuel filter in a filler truck to self-destruct, dumping fuel filter guts into the plane's tank, which passed through the plane's filters, and jammed every valve on the plane.
[01:28:54] <Tom_itx> what will gasoline do to ABS?
[01:29:14] <malcom2073> Tom_itx: It's not gasoline, it's propane
[01:29:21] <Tom_itx> ahh
[01:29:22] <Computer_barf> no one interested in my stepper powered fishing reel
[01:29:28] <malcom2073> Computer_barf: They make reels with motors

[01:30:23] <malcom2073> zeeshan: Yes I'm 100% sure that propane isn't gasoline
[01:30:24] <malcom2073> :-P
[01:30:33] <zeeshan> O
[01:30:38] <Tom_itx> but what will it do to the ABS
[01:30:48] <furrywolf> abs has very poor solvent-resistance. you can probably glue abs with gasoline.
[01:30:50] <malcom2073> We'll find out!
[01:30:50] <zeeshan> melt it
[01:31:13] <zeeshan> (C8H8·C4H6·C3H3N)n
[01:31:19] <malcom2073> My propane tank's hose has an ABS connector
[01:31:23] <malcom2073> probably not that bad
[01:31:30] <zeeshan> it prolly breaks the crosslinks
[01:31:31] <Computer_barf> these guys are catching these tuna for a living. You would think they would welcome motor power
[01:31:49] <malcom2073> Computer_barf: Yeah I dunno why they don't just strap a large motor on
[01:31:54] <malcom2073> The reels typically don't have huge motors though
[01:32:12] <malcom2073> I think there are laws against automated fishing, maybe that counts?

[01:39:44] <malcom2073> that may not work in ABS
[01:40:27] <Computer_barf> as I understand it , one of the problems they have is that the tuna goes under the boat, so they need to constantly reorient the boat so the fish doesn't use the boat to break the line
[01:40:43] <Computer_barf> i would think there would be some sort of mechanical / design solution to that
[01:40:43] <furrywolf> use stronger line?
[01:40:59] <Computer_barf> they apparently are better at spotting thicker line
[01:41:04] <malcom2073> Fully rotating carousel in the middle of the boat?
[01:41:15] <furrywolf> mount the rod on a big gimbal that can rotate under the boat

[01:41:20] <furrywolf> and a waterproof motor
[01:42:00] <Computer_barf> yeah some sort of robotic glass bottom robotic fishing pod
[01:42:24] <furrywolf> or just build tuna-hunting ROV drones.
[01:42:42] <furrywolf> chase tuna, spear, wrap around, blow ballast tanks, radio for pickup.
[01:42:50] <Computer_barf> i know they spear hunt them using planes to spot them
[01:43:59] <Computer_barf> malcom2073: also had it occur to me that much of the ocean already falls under the tragedy of the commons
[01:44:39] <malcom2073> True, I am unawares if/how that's regulated
[01:45:09] <furrywolf> I bet you could build a rather effective tuna-hunting drone.
[01:45:13] <Computer_barf> well my point is that no one owns it in such a capacity that they have an incentive to maintain it's long term viability
[01:45:34] <Computer_barf> Im just picturing a drone getting dragged around
[01:45:35] <Computer_barf> lol
[01:45:44] <malcom2073> Gonna need a bigger drone
[01:46:08] <Computer_barf> i like my semi submersible houseboat homestead
[01:46:27] <Computer_barf> although it doesn't target and hunter/kill
[01:46:37] <Computer_barf> it does mean you could earn a passive income
[01:46:46] <furrywolf> the drone could use a line, and reel itself in to the fish for the kill... or just be faster than a tuna, chase it, and harpoon it.
[01:47:05] <Computer_barf> oh that sounds better
[01:47:16] <malcom2073> I googled cause I'm curious:
http://www.seasteading.org/floating-city-project/
[01:47:24] <Computer_barf> actually pull itself over to the tuna and then kill it
[01:47:50] <Computer_barf> steasteading.org doesn't have many semi submersible proposals
[01:48:09] <Computer_barf> im not talking about a submarine, no serious ballasting system
[01:48:25] -!- jvrousseau has quit [Quit: My Mac has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
[01:48:25] <furrywolf> it'd be pretty easy to make the drone propel itself in the direction of force on the line, so as to keep the line from breaking, while reeling itself in closer for the kill.
[01:48:30] <malcom2073> I wonder how deep you have to go to ride out a storm without feeling the effects
[01:48:35] <Computer_barf> just something that allows most of the body to fall under the water/air interface

[03:49:15] <renesis> okay dont forget to check for slap
[03:49:37] <furrywolf> my plan is to emulate the stock leads, and see how that works.
[03:49:55] -!- theorbtwo has quit [Read error: No route to host]
[03:50:19] <furrywolf> http://fw.bushytails.net/tinselwire05.jpg http://fw.bushytails.net/tinselwire06.jpg do you get off on excessively magnified images of wire? then check these out!
[03:50:56] <renesis> always ends up kind of different =\ just make sure it doesnt slap, doesnt pull the former off balance at mechanical xmax, and they can short on each other
[03:51:21] <renesis> thats a pretty neat pic
[03:51:56] <furrywolf> I really need a DSLR.
[03:51:58] <renesis> was going to ask if it had some sort of net over it but i guess its just fibers sticking out
[03:52:26] <furrywolf> for scale, the wire is .054" diameter.
[03:52:46] <renesis> er, cant short each other
[03:52:48] <renesis> i rabbed
[03:54:34] <renesis> like, you dont have the time and gear to check if the leads are jumproping so assume they will and try and make sure they cant touch if pulled towards each other
[03:54:48] <furrywolf> my camera really isn't meant for photography like that.
[03:54:48] <furrywolf> but DSLRs are stupidly expensive. :(
[03:55:00] <renesis> but big frame little voice coil, sometimes you cant avoid =(
[03:55:16] <renesis> cameras are expensive
[03:55:17] <furrywolf> I may not have the time, but I'm sure I could rig up an acceptable stobe to freeze it.
[03:55:29] <furrywolf> nah, my little point-and-shoot was cheap
[03:55:44] <Computer_barf> did someone say strobe party!??
[03:55:46] <renesis> you dont want to freeze it
[03:55:59] <renesis> you want to slow motion strobe, so you need another generator and some offset
[03:56:10] <Computer_barf> ooonnce ooonce ooonce ooonce
[03:56:18] <furrywolf> oh? I don't? if I can freeze it, I can tweak the frequency slightly to show it slowly moving.
[03:56:37] <renesis> computer_barf: actually we burnt out the bulk on a b&k strobe lamp, and they wanted like $1700 for the replacement bulb
[03:57:05] <renesis> so we got strobe party thing from guitar center and used that bulb
[03:57:22] <Computer_barf> is malcome2073: the same person as _malcome
[03:57:24] <renesis> furrywolf: right so you need multiple generators
[03:57:33] <renesis> one to drive the speaker and one to drive the strobe
[03:57:37] <furrywolf> I could use some serious strobe taking those macro photos... it's hard to get enough light on something that small to get an acceptable shutter time.
[03:57:40] <furrywolf> yes, that's not hard.
[03:57:53] <renesis> the bruell and kjaer would divide the trigger signal in half until it was under 100hz
[03:58:04] <Computer_barf> SERIOUS STROBE ooonce ooonce ooonce
[03:58:10] <renesis> and then add the slow motion frequency to the divided frequency
[03:58:15] <furrywolf> easiest way to use a software tone generator to drive the speaker, then my function generator and an LED...

[03:58:47] <renesis> could just use two soft gens
[03:59:03] <renesis> repaer ftw, or you could make files in audacity but you couldnt control freq quickly
[03:59:17] <furrywolf> I don't know if I can get an acceptably narrow pulse through a sound card.
[03:59:24] <furrywolf> my function generator has no problem generating a very narrow pulse
[03:59:31] <renesis> oh, no you make a one shot
[03:59:34] <Computer_barf> control the freq, serious strobe, led's , ooonce ooonce ooonce
[03:59:38] <renesis> and trigger using the sine pulses
[03:59:49] <Computer_barf> trigger the sine pulses!
[03:59:59] <renesis> like if the strobe has enough unf to do long pulses
[04:00:14] <Computer_barf> long pulses!
[04:00:27] <renesis> i think i did mine with a hex inverter, cap and pot
[04:00:35] <furrywolf> zeeshan: send me a good DSLR so I don't have to keep taking photos like
http://fw.bushytails.net/tinselwire06.jpg with a point-and-shoot. :P
[04:00:50] <zeeshan> i use the iphone as a camera
[04:00:54] <renesis> eventually had to replace the b&k strobe with a 10W led one, heh
[04:00:54] <zeeshan> which is worse :P
[04:01:05] <zeeshan> furrywolf: that is tinsel made out of?
[04:01:48] <furrywolf> zeeshan: that's the wire that connects speaker cones to the terminals
[04:01:53] <zeeshan> yes
[04:01:56] <zeeshan> but what is it made out of
[04:02:54] <renesis> thread and copper, various combinations of
[04:03:02] <furrywolf> it's made out of materials mined in china.
[04:03:09] <renesis> probably
[04:03:55] <renesis> that looks like tinned copper ribbons and polyester
[04:03:58] <zeeshan> so it doesnt have a protective layer
[04:04:05] <furrywolf> http://www.ebay.com/itm/140856629562 is where it came from
[04:04:11] <renesis> no its not magnet wire
[04:04:14] <Computer_barf> its made of solent green
[04:04:15] <furrywolf> it looks much like polyester to me
[04:04:23] <renesis> they will jumprope and short if you are unlocky
[04:04:45] <renesis> unlocky (c) rencorp
[04:05:14] <furrywolf> the speaker design has them pretty far apart. I'd have to fail pretty badly for them to short.
[04:05:23] <renesis> cool
[04:06:03] <renesis> is it faston terminals riveted to fiberboard?
[04:06:32] <renesis> i hate that shit, this is the worst part of mass production speakers
[04:06:50] <furrywolf> there's spots where it looks like the plating failed or wasn't evenly applied, and the color of the base metal looks like copper
[04:07:40] <renesis> sometimes it isnt plated
[04:07:41] <furrywolf> (from looking at the image - it's sure not visible to the naked eye)
[04:08:05] <renesis> like itll be normal wires braided around the thread, like a loose shield, that stuff is super compliant
[04:08:16] <renesis> but yeah can go nuts if you need it longer
[04:08:37] <renesis> long throw subs with big frame, tinsel is usually drama
[04:09:12] <furrywolf> yeah, it's just terminals on a little bit of board. not like my JBLs with fancy terminals.
[04:09:33] <furrywolf> if I had a better camera, or a microscope, I could get better images of the material.
[04:09:33] <renesis> im not sure i like the spring terminals either
[04:09:49] * furrywolf doesn't think renesis likes anything
[04:10:10] <renesis> PCBA with JST connectors
[04:10:38] <renesis> and tinsels into through hole plated holes
[04:11:12] <renesis> but this doesnt work for very high power stuff
[04:11:15] <furrywolf> I wonder what the current carrying capabilitiy of this wire is... there's really not much copper.
[04:11:35] <furrywolf> it's almost all filler
[04:11:39] <renesis> youre speakers arent that hardcore, so prob more than the voice coil and solder connections can handle
[04:12:01] <furrywolf> maybe if I have a scrap after installing it, I'll clip it across my benchtop supply and turn the current knob up slowly
[04:12:03] <renesis> yeah thats normal, the ribbon on that might be thin
[04:12:19] <renesis> itll make a smell
[04:13:09] <renesis> furrywolf: so i do that with DC supplies and amplifiers to thermal test voice coils, the tinsels never give out first
[04:13:10] <furrywolf> that's the cue that you've reached about the current limit. :P
[04:13:25] <renesis> unless there is like, horrible problem with tinself that would have caused failure anyway
[04:13:47] <renesis> heh, naw smells are normal in hard break in
[04:13:50] <furrywolf> I'm guessing these drivers just have regular magnet wire, unlike the edge-wound heavy copper of the jbls.
[04:14:10] <renesis> the tinsels smell, the glue outgasses, the enamel wire on the voice coil sets
[04:15:02] <renesis> power test gear will monitor voice coil temp through change in DC resistance, so we basically bake the shit at max thermal output, everything smells =\
[04:15:16] <furrywolf> someone I knew had to fix one of those jbls once... the guy connected it to a 2kw PA amp, and used it as a sub. the voice coil former crumpled, but the coil survived. reglued it on a new former and put it back together.
[04:15:47] <renesis> yeah sometimes they will slide
[04:15:59] <renesis> usually ends up rubbing or something
[04:16:06] <furrywolf> no, it didn't slide. it crumpled. i.e. WAY too much force applied to it. heh.
[04:16:36] <renesis> shrug, or crashed
[04:16:55] <renesis> need more former or heavier tension on the wind
[04:17:17] <furrywolf> it crumpled between the coil and the cone, like a can when you step on it.
[04:17:30] <renesis> so it needs more former
[04:17:30] <furrywolf> needs to not have 2kw applied to a 100W speaker. lol
[04:18:25] <renesis> yeah but thats pretty pussy, your soft parts defeating the coil
[04:18:45] <renesis> prob just a roll of aluminum
[04:19:12] <furrywolf> he needed a sub, and didn't have one handy... so hooked a single (he only had one) jbl studio monitor to his big pa amp. worked for a while, then started rubbing. then he sold it to the person I knew for $5.
[04:20:37] <renesis> i dont think i get to be a speaker geek this summer
[04:21:09] <renesis> hopefully planar magnetic headphone geek
[04:21:12] <furrywolf> I don't remember the details, as this was a while ago, but I seem to recall the repair involved roof flashing.
[04:21:25] <furrywolf> (and it wasn't my repair)
[04:21:27] <renesis> as a former?
[04:21:33] <furrywolf> yes
[04:21:59] <renesis> shrug, steel is pretty common on big stuff now
[04:22:14] <renesis> if it worked at all guy gets an A for fab skills
[04:22:26] <furrywolf> yes, he had excellent fab skills.

[04:32:58] <renesis> but the shit i do like, its a ton of people bouncing and dancing and moving
[04:33:18] <renesis> i go to a rock show in hollywood, people standing around, hip hop, mostly the same thing
[04:34:07] <renesis> punks can still get down, but most popular music, people just stand there
[04:34:09] <furrywolf> I don't like hiphop.
[04:34:10] <furrywolf> at all.

[04:34:47] <renesis> im not into most of it but theres like 10% thats awesome
[04:34:58] <furrywolf> the dnalounge is nice for those of us with no local musical venues, as you can wait until they have a real band, and watch it from many miles away
[04:35:05] <renesis> most forms of music like this
[04:35:33] -!- pandeiro has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[04:35:51] <furrywolf> they have a pretty wide variety of bands. all their repeat shows tend to be house/bass/etc, because that's what brings in money. the owner despises this state of affairs.
[04:36:13] <furrywolf> he likes having a wide variety of good live bands. he loses money on them.
[04:36:40] <renesis> well hopefully another venue that likes that scene opens up and he doesnt have to deal anymore
[04:36:59] <furrywolf> http://www.dnalounge.com/calendar/2015/05-22d.html that might be a good show
[04:37:12] <furrywolf> you mean "so he goes out of business"? remember, the idiots with laptops are what brings in the money.
[04:37:38] <renesis> i think half the shows at the place hosts the weekly dnb thing i go to are burlesque shows
[04:38:15] <renesis> he doesnt like the business, you just said
[04:39:10] <furrywolf> he likes the business. he'd just like it a whole lot more if good live bands paid the bills, not idiots with laptops.

[04:42:29] <furrywolf> I've never seen the point of gaming. completely uninteresting use of time.
[04:42:41] <renesis> its harder for live bands to do a show like a performance mixed dj set
[04:42:51] <renesis> live bands stop and take a break every 3 or 4 minutes
[04:43:54] <renesis> like, mixed set is usually 30 minutes minimum, average between 60 and 90 minutes of continuous music, and sometimes are handed off without break to form like 4-6 hours of continuous music
[04:44:27] <renesis> that doesnt happen at a rock show, and doing electronic music live is awesome but the performers look pretty dead after an hour
[04:44:32] <furrywolf> except it's all music you've already heard, there's nothing interesting happening on stage, and invariably the guy playing it is a fucking idiot who blathers.
[04:44:45] <renesis> um
[04:44:49] <renesis> same with live bands
[04:45:01] <renesis> and no, performance mix stuff usually includes unreleased stuff
[04:45:12] <renesis> and the whole point is to mix tracks into something new
[04:45:53] <renesis> like, sometimes two things on top of each other works out and its pretty fucking unexpected and feels amazing (remember is a tactile form of music)
[04:48:21] <furrywolf> there has never been a time when I've felt a DJ improved music, and there has never been a time when I felt a MC didn't ruin it.
[04:48:38] <renesis> well youve prob just been to house shows
[04:48:57] <renesis> i kind of feel embarassed to be at those shows
[04:49:36] <furrywolf> I've never been to one in person. lol
[04:49:53] <renesis> then you cant speak on it, the whole point is being there
[04:49:55] <furrywolf> 1) there's no music here other than bars, and 2) I wouldn't go to one even if there were.
[04:50:11] <renesis> bass music at small vanues is awesome
[04:50:27] <furrywolf> this area is remarkably devoid of good music. occasionally a band will play at the university. the music shows are all reggae, hiphop, etc.

[04:51:33] <furrywolf> there's a very large reggae show, best known for its cosumption of ludicrous quantities of drugs, bad music, violence, racist performers, and management not paying workers.
[04:51:45] <furrywolf> consumption
[04:52:08] <furrywolf> it gets cancelled every other year or so because they piss the county off to the point they revoke their permits
[04:52:09] <renesis> reggae on the river?
[04:52:12] <renesis> i so want to go to that
[04:52:45] <renesis> will be like 800 miles away then =\
[04:52:52] <furrywolf> ... do you consider doing drugs a lifestyle?
[04:53:02] <furrywolf> because you have to if you want to enjoy any of the music.
[04:53:17] <renesis> i dont mind clouds of pot
[04:53:37] <furrywolf> how about coke and meth? :P
[04:53:49] <renesis> not into it
[04:54:00] <renesis> coke isnt so bad, meth is some freak show shit
[04:54:23] <renesis> but if youre going to be around musicians and media industry types, coke is going to happen
[04:54:23] <furrywolf> meth is very, very popular here.
[04:54:32] <renesis> coffee just isnt enough in that scene
[04:56:01] <renesis> also stoners and tweakers tend not to congregate, it doesnt really work well
[04:56:40] <renesis> my guess is most of the tweakers are poor and homless locals, and the festivals are 90% weed acid shrooms mdma and coke
[04:56:41] <furrywolf> lol
[04:56:51] <furrywolf> I see you've never been here.
[04:57:02] <renesis> never lived there
[04:57:17] <furrywolf> duude, we can be stoned ALL NIGHT without needing to sleep! it's like totally awesome!
[04:57:21] <renesis> but i imagine its like every city in california
[04:57:25] <renesis> tweakers everywhere
[04:57:29] <furrywolf> I haven't slept in six days!
[04:57:42] <renesis> right most stoners arent into that
[04:57:59] <renesis> you dont sustain that functionally for long in normal circumstances
[04:59:17] <furrywolf> tweekers have a different standard of functional. being able to break into a car, steal something, then take it into 700 separate pieces because you forgot you were going to sell it to the pawn shop, is normal functionality.
[04:59:47] <renesis> right im saying thats not most people, and not most stoners
[04:59:50] <renesis> thats a tweaker
[05:00:14] <furrywolf> yeah, there's not too much overlap... but there definitely is some. and raggae on the river attracts both.
[05:00:47] <renesis> theres overlap in everything, music festivals attract drug users
[05:01:17] <renesis> a reggae festival is going to be mostly psychadelics and weed, and most of those users are pretty hostile towards meth addicts
[05:02:36] <renesis> ravers would be a bit more accepting, but honestly most everyone considers tweakers pretty disgusting
[05:02:41] <furrywolf> I think you're vastly overestimating the usefulness of the people who attend it.
[05:03:32] <renesis> theyre useful in that they contributed to the party
[05:04:46] <renesis> you go, youre polite within the context of the event and enjoy yourself, you leave, who gives a fuck how much someone else contributes to what
[05:05:10] <renesis> they contributed money to the promoters pocket so he or she wants to do it again
[05:05:14] <furrywolf> it's not stoners sitting around listening to music while passing the bong. it's drunks, tweekers, and the worst of society getting together to get wasted, start fights, trash local businesses, destroy the propety, and generally demonstate their non-contribution to society.
[05:05:32] <renesis> sounds like a normal music festival
[05:05:41] <renesis> if it doesnt make the local area money, they should ban it
[05:05:50] <renesis> my guess is that it does, or they would have banned it
[05:06:11] <furrywolf> did I mention it randomly gets cancelled, has changed owners several times, and no one gets paid?
[05:06:30] <renesis> again, sounds like normal music festivals
[05:06:40] <furrywolf> it's lost money
[05:06:59] <renesis> i dont want to keep repeating myself, but...
[05:07:08] <furrywolf> local businesses hate it, because the people it attracts don't buy stuff - they just steal what they need and pick fights with employees.
[05:07:26] <renesis> so dont let the city approve the permits
[05:08:04] <furrywolf> you mean like "The 2010 festival was canceled due to the financial trouble of the organizer, Tom Dimmick, resulting in his denial of a Conditional Use Permit by the Humboldt County Planning Commission."
[05:08:13] <furrywolf> it's the county that denies the permits, not the city.
[05:08:30] <renesis> same deal
[05:08:59] <furrywolf> "The dispute centered on revenues, with the Mateel questioning why profits estimated by People Productions did not materialize, why there was a discrepancy between the number of tickets approved and reported attendance and $300,000 in cash expenditures with no receipts." lol
[05:09:39] <renesis> so normal music festival?
[05:09:59] <furrywolf> I think last year they made the organizers rent something like half the police force, to try to keep the violence down...
[05:10:11] <furrywolf> no. normal music festivals don't involve hard drugs and violence.
[05:11:50] <furrywolf> the original founders left because of the switch to hard drugs and bad music
[05:13:11] <renesis> what?
[05:13:22] <renesis> all music festivals involve hard drugs
[05:13:41] <zeeshan> renesis knows all about drugs
[05:13:44] <zeeshan> especially the psychotics
[05:13:47] * zeeshan hides
[05:13:57] <renesis> i know that theres people doing drugs at music festivals
[05:14:01] <renesis> and fights happen
[05:14:21] <renesis> its lame but thats why they pat you down on the way in
[05:15:01] <furrywolf> I really don't think you're getting what this event is. it's not stoners. it's more like what you'd expect at... I don't know what to compare it to. as far as I know, there has never been any other festival with such unpleasantness. it's like a skinhead meeting or something.
[05:16:15] <furrywolf> the performers they've been finding keep promoting racism and homophobia, to the point where they make the news by being banned from other local places.
[05:16:18] <renesis> like coachella, or lollapalooza, or that shit with all the new metal bands
[05:16:21] <renesis> family values
[05:16:33] <renesis> there was tons of drugs at dead shows
[05:16:46] <furrywolf> LOL. it is NOTHING like a dead show.
[05:16:51] <furrywolf> completely the wrong vibe.
[05:17:00] <renesis> there were hard drugs at dead shows
[05:17:07] <renesis> and a lot of people scamming people
[05:17:20] <renesis> and a lot of useless people, to use your word
[05:17:51] <furrywolf> deadheads are a completely different kind of useless
[05:18:17] <renesis> um, no
[05:18:38] <renesis> just because you like them doesnt suddenly make them more productive
[05:19:26] <renesis> electronic music festivals are from the rave scene which was an underground psychadelic drug scene
[05:19:31] <furrywolf> I don't like them. at all.
[05:20:02] <renesis> club scene is from disco and thats all about cocaine and designer drugs
[05:20:28] <furrywolf> why do you keep talking about psychedelics? dead shows are where you find psychedelics. not reggae on the river.
[05:20:37] <furrywolf> reggae on the river is coke and meth.
[05:20:45] <renesis> im sure theres tons of acid and shrooms there
[05:21:11] <renesis> the whole country is about coke and meth now =\
[05:21:54] <furrywolf> this county is more about meth than most. heh.
[05:22:01] <renesis> youre in a rural area, meth is going to be an issue
[05:22:53] <furrywolf> I've been in other rural areas. they're not nearly as bad as here.
[05:24:15] <renesis> because youre where stoners go to becomes homeless bums
[05:24:31] <renesis> its like how santa barbara is where surfers go to become homeless bums
[05:25:14] <furrywolf> the homeless here aren't stoners. they're all tweekers.
[05:25:32] <furrywolf> the hippies in school busses thing is long gone.
[05:25:37] <furrywolf> now it's all tweekers.
[05:25:41] <renesis> well right because they became homeless bums
[05:25:57] <renesis> homeless bums in santa barbara dont surf, they drink and tweak
[05:26:08] <furrywolf> ... no, because they got jobs, and became non-stoners, or they started doing meth, and became tweekers.
[05:26:36] <renesis> same deal, tweaker is the road to homeless bum
[05:26:52] <renesis> its more of a rural thing tho
[05:27:07] <furrywolf> I've never been to santa barbara, but I lived in santa cruz for a few years, and I can tell you the homeless there is COMPLETELY different than the homeless here.
[05:27:37] <renesis> yeah santa cruz is more expensive, kind of more remote, its nice
[05:28:02] <renesis> you live in stoner mecca
[05:28:14] <furrywolf> this area has a reputation for hippies, stoners, surfers, etc. that's all in the past. dead. gone.
[05:28:19] <furrywolf> now we have tweekers.
[05:28:36] <furrywolf> even the pot growers are tweekers. they're just here for the money, not the now-dead culture.
[05:28:57] <furrywolf> the pot growers shoot each other
[05:29:02] <renesis> you didnt keep it on the down low
[05:29:06] <furrywolf> we have a homicide rate substantially worse than oakland
[05:29:34] <furrywolf> the whole hippie-stoner-surfer thing is gone.
[05:30:36] <renesis> well considering how much shit you talk about stoners im not surprised they left
[05:30:58] <furrywolf> there's still some remnants of hippie stoner culture left, but the tweekers have mostly driven them out.
[05:31:06] <renesis> OR and WA coast is prob more your thing
[05:32:25] <renesis> like, your hippy culture was selling weed to the whole state and made it clear that laws were not well enforced there
[05:32:57] <renesis> like, im a kid in elementary school i know that humboldt is where all the weed comes from, how do you not expect professional growers to not move in?
[05:33:05] <furrywolf> the hippie growers have mostly been put out of business by the large-scale tweeker grows.
[05:33:29] <renesis> well, thats and legal growing in the rest of the state
[05:33:32] <renesis> for like 15 years now
[05:34:08] <renesis> so youre okay with the large scale mexican growers or its racist to talk about them?
[05:35:00] -!- kanzure has quit [Read error: No route to host]
[05:35:20] <furrywolf> the large scale mexican grows are a trival percentage of the grows, and just receive disproportionate media attention.
[05:35:36] <renesis> haha, very sjw of you
[05:35:37] <furrywolf> if they make half a percent of the output I'd be surprised.
[05:35:43] <furrywolf> sjw?
[05:35:47] <renesis> its gotta be the tweakers!
[05:35:53] <renesis> google
[05:36:43] <furrywolf> seems like it translates to troll.
[05:36:46] <renesis> seriously though, theyre probably mostly in trouble because the whole state grows weed local now
[05:37:11] <renesis> who wants some outdoor or greenhouse from up north you can get the same plus indoor local
[05:37:28] <furrywolf> there are mexican grows, but they cause a very small percentage of the problems. they just get printed in big headlines when they get busted, because they're unusual.
[05:37:39] <renesis> furrywolf: agressively politically correct, so yeah troll
[05:38:31] <renesis> anyway, if the problem is money, its because 15 years of widespread growing has reduced their market share
[05:38:54] <renesis> i mean its crazy how cheap weed is right now
[05:39:27] <renesis> you can even sell bulk dank weed unless you want to do like few dollars a gram
[05:39:42] <furrywolf> $1000/lb for decent stuff is what I've been hearing lately
[05:39:49] <renesis> like, if you got a weed farm youre in for some tough times
[05:39:52] <renesis> pfft
[05:40:03] <furrywolf> ... gram? we don't measure weed in grams here. lol
[05:40:23] <furrywolf> ounces are the smallest unit, and no metric. :P
[05:40:37] <furrywolf> grams is for meth
[05:40:39] <renesis> thats what it goes for retail, and theres not a lot of middlemen
[05:40:47] <furrywolf> and heroin
[05:41:16] <zeeshan> drugs are lame :p
[05:41:35] <renesis> so like, people are growing in the back of the shop, and selling at cheap gram rates, no bulk cuts in prices
[05:41:59] <renesis> like, weed farms hundreds of miles away really dont make a lot of sense
[05:42:20] <furrywolf> ... gram rates? again, weed is not sold in grams.
[05:42:34] <furrywolf> things sold in grams come from trailers that small like draino.
[05:42:56] <renesis> how much weed have you bought
[05:43:06] <furrywolf> smell
[05:43:08] <renesis> how many weed shops you been into?
[05:43:16] <furrywolf> people buy weed?
[05:43:32] <furrywolf> I have to tell people no, I don't want them to give me weed. lol
[05:43:44] <renesis> retail its sold in grams and 1/8s, and a fair 1/8 is 3.5g
[05:43:52] -!- anth0ny_ has quit [Quit: anth0ny_]
[05:44:28] <furrywolf> there's 2 or 3 I think retail shops here, never been in any of them. the others went out of business. seems you can't sell weed.
[05:44:34] <renesis> like, theres lots of jokes about the miss .3g when you convert ounces to grams at the rate of 28q/oz
[05:44:52] <renesis> right where you live, where you are saying weed culture is dying
[05:45:00] <renesis> well, stoner grower culture
[05:45:04] <zeeshan> anyone around that isn't talking about lame drugs? :DP
[05:45:20] <furrywolf> zeeshan: I'd be happy to talk about anything else, but I need to get to bed soon.
[05:45:27] <furrywolf> no one here ever talks about strapons. :(
[05:45:33] <renesis> i can talk about tinsel wire some more
[05:45:50] <zeeshan> http://www.kijiji.ca/v-hand-tool/mississauga-peel-region/mitutoyo-holttest/1044808230?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true
[05:45:54] <zeeshan> was wondering what the heck these are
[05:46:05] <zeeshan> three point mics
[05:46:07] <zeeshan> i guess for bores?
[05:46:18] <renesis> outside micrometers?
[05:47:26] <renesis> HOLTEST sounds like a engrish part number heh
[05:48:16] <furrywolf> that's a lot of money.
[05:48:22] <zeeshan> thats what i was thinking lol
[05:48:26] <zeeshan> sounds a little overpriced!
[05:48:35] <furrywolf> you can get four pounds of indoor or six of outdoor for that.
[05:48:38] * furrywolf hides
[05:48:46] <zeeshan> lol
[05:48:50] <renesis> furrywolf: anyway to summarize, your weed farms are going out of business because they sell for $2/g instead of $5-20

[05:55:35] <renesis> zeeshan: maybe
[05:56:06] <renesis> they want to kill the chrome because its basically the same as the silver when they were a mercedes team
[05:56:41] <renesis> dennis mentioned something about grey, but keeps bringing up the dayglo red
[05:56:56] <renesis> marussia stole their red on white marlboro livery
[05:57:17] <renesis> and dennis says orange is going backwards

[15:03:25] <norias> you think?
[15:03:36] <norias> i guess that depends on the college, too
[15:04:31] <JT-Shop> the cold war coined "duck and cover"
[15:05:01] <tiwake> there are more options... with public school its whatever is next to you. unless you count private and other schooling options (that most people seem to ignore?)

[17:09:11] <PetefromTn> I never really thought much about mazda cars before but after being around them a lot lately working with these guys I gotta admit they sure are growing on me. I love the braap braaaaap of the motors sound. They just built one making 760 hp and now they are working on a 1k motor.
[17:10:07] <Tom_itx> one run and it's done
[17:10:35] <PetefromTn> LOL I hear ya but apparenlty not...
[17:11:01] <PetefromTn> The 760 HP car has been prowling the streets for quite awhile now.
[17:12:31] <Tom_itx> i guess thinking back on it, he's lucky he didn't break any windows out
[17:13:56] <PetefromTn> Personally I love the interior of the car. Its actually a sweet car and while kinda tight inside it is well laid out. Not saying I am gonna sell my car for one but I would take one if I got a good deal on it. They are building a badass Supra right now 2JZ!!!

[17:14:58] <PetefromTn> anyone know how to add an item to the bookmarks toolbar in Chrome without having it add the frackin
[17:15:04] <PetefromTn> other bookmarks toolbar?
[17:15:27] <PetefromTn> tab rather..
[17:15:55] <_methods> make new folders
[17:16:04] <_methods> then add the bookmark to your folder
[17:16:28] <_methods> it will ask you waht folder you want to add to when you bookmark it
[17:16:54] <PetefromTn> and this allows you to have the little icon added at the top?
[17:16:56] <CaptHindsight> zeeshan: did you figure out your flow rates yet?
[17:17:09] <_methods> what do yo mean?
[17:17:43] <Tom_itx> ff changed the way it does bm now too
[17:17:45] <PetefromTn> I mean I have a bunch of icons for favorited pages atop my screen in the bookmarks toolbar and I want to add more.
[17:17:50] <Tom_itx> i'm not liking it much
[17:17:59] <_methods> ahhh
[17:18:06] <_methods> just add bookmark to toolbar
[17:18:16] <PetefromTn> how?
[17:18:27] <_methods> ok when you hit the bookmark button
[17:18:34] <_methods> hit the add to folder dropdown
[17:18:42] <_methods> then select bookmarks bar
[17:18:59] <_methods> and it will add it directly to your bookmark bar
[17:19:13] <PetefromTn> Wait I just did it..
[17:19:50] <PetefromTn> Just bookmarked it and got the OTHER BOOKMARKS TAB then clicked and dragged the item to the bookmarks toolbar at the top and the Other bookmarks tab disappeared...COOL
[17:20:19] <_methods> yeah you can do it from the manage bookmarks page too
[17:20:25] <PetefromTn> thanks for trying to help ;)
[17:20:29] <_methods> haha np
[17:21:05] <PetefromTn> got a couple items to machine today that are kinda of a quick turnaround for a previous customer
[17:21:22] <PetefromTn> just cleaned out the chip trays and washed down the inside of the machine
[17:21:37] <_methods> nice repeat work is what you want
[17:21:41] <PetefromTn> two damn parts both two sided and are unique
[17:21:53] <PetefromTn> also kinda difficult to hold onto..
[17:22:03] <_methods> soft jaws

[17:23:04] <_methods> yeah i need to get a bar of alum and make some myself
[17:23:09] <PetefromTn> this week has been a BAD one for me as far as techno gadjets are concerned damnit
[17:23:24] <PetefromTn> they are so cheap it is not really worth making them
[17:23:31] <Tom_itx> we had several different thicknesses
[17:23:54] <Tom_itx> you never knew what profile you would have to cut in one
[17:23:55] <PetefromTn> ebay has many different packages of them for just a bit more than the damn material costs
[17:24:01] <_methods> hmmm
[17:24:36] <Tom_itx> alot of our material was supplied and we always had scrap
[17:24:50] <PetefromTn> anyways but beloved HTC one decided to stop working in regards to Wifi and Bluetooth
[17:25:06] <PetefromTn> so basically made it useless other than for calls and textx
[17:25:25] <_methods> damn they are about as cheap as the material
[17:25:29] <PetefromTn> then my damn AC adapter for the Laptop I use for all my programming dies on me
[17:25:39] <_methods> gonna have to just order some from ebay i guess

[17:27:11] <_methods> hahahah
[17:27:12] <PetefromTn> LOL probably
[17:28:21] <PetefromTn> machining a bunch of cast iron parts lately shit cuts like butter even with that 1/8 endmill I ordered. Kinda surprised how easy it cut really. Just makes a big mess and have to clean out the machine each time I cut it.
[17:28:31] <ssi> it's dusty
[17:28:53] <_methods> yeah vacuum and airblast is your friend
[17:29:32] <_methods> lots of black boogers
[17:29:33] <PetefromTn> yeah I just blasted air and put down some cloth in the chip trays to catch most of it. Then vacuumed out the trays after I cut it.
[17:29:43] <PetefromTn> no coolant
[17:30:44] <PetefromTn> so I ordered a brand new damn AC charging adapter for my Laptop but until it arrives I am SOL.

[17:32:06] <_methods> yeah buck up a 12v pc supply to 19v

[17:35:43] <_methods> some make it easy with a pot

[18:07:34] <ssi> lol so a couple weeks ago I machined a prop spacer for a friend of mine for his pitts
[18:07:44] <ssi> he needed like 1.75" taken off the length
[18:08:02] <ssi> he's flown it ~25 hours since we did it
[18:08:10] <ssi> yseterday he uncowled it and about shit himself
[18:08:39] <ssi> the flywheel wasn't tigth between the crank flange and the spacer, there was like a .030" gap, and you could rock the flywheel through 10 degrees or so
[18:09:11] <ssi> turns out the counterbore for the crank nose wasn't deep enough and it was tightening up on the nose
[18:09:34] <ssi> the prop was solid but the flywheel has been rattling around and peening the spacer
[18:10:26] <ssi> I faced the back of the spacer where it was peened, and opened up the counterbore
[18:10:33] <ssi> blued up the back of the spacer and we test-torqued it
[18:10:46] <_methods> wow
[18:11:02] <_methods> poop in da pants moment
[18:11:04] <ssi> yep
[18:11:16] <ssi> he's been doing a lot of gyroscopic maneuvers in it too
[18:11:28] <ssi> only thing really holding the prop solid was the bushings and bolts
[18:11:48] <_methods> centrifugal force hehe
[18:12:29] <ssi> gyroscopics are really hard on the prop and crank flange
[18:12:33] <_methods> i bet

[18:24:10] <_methods> a drawbar?
[18:24:21] <FinboySlick> SpeedEvil: It'd be a ~3mm travel linear motor, I guess.
[18:24:39] <SpeedEvil> you mean you want to make basically a solenoid?
[18:24:48] <SpeedEvil> Or do you want to be able to accurately control it
[18:24:57] <FinboySlick> No accuracy, stops when it bumps.
[18:25:01] <SpeedEvil> What force do you need
[18:26:14] <FinboySlick> SpeedEvil: I imagine a couple hundred pounds or more. But not sustained for very long.
[18:26:26] <FinboySlick> (it wouldn't be for a big mill)
[18:27:14] <SpeedEvil> That's a long enough throw and enough force to make solenoids uncomfortably large
[18:27:19] <FinboySlick> I'm more curious on what factors other than the obvious (number of turns, distance) that one should consider when designing a solenoid actuator.
[18:27:50] <PetefromTn> kinda surprised you did not hear or feel the problem with that prop..
[18:28:25] <ssi> PetefromTn: the prop was solid... and at speed, the flywheel would have straightened itself out due to centrifugal force
[18:28:30] <SpeedEvil> FinboySlick: saturation matters - you can only get so much magnetic field into iron before it stops being a magnetic conductor - and there isn't any batter
[18:28:34] <ssi> it actually ran smoother after we machined the spacer :P
[18:29:05] <PetefromTn> sounds like you guys like to live dangerously ;)
[18:29:16] <SpeedEvil> FinboySlick: I would look at a car door-lock actuator and a lever
[18:31:10] <FinboySlick> SpeedEvil: OK. Saturation isn't something I readily had in mind so that's a good catch. With the lever thing though, wouldn't that be something to optimize? I'm figuring that the more travel distance you have, the more magnetic loss you have so while you gain from the actual lever, you loose on the distance. I guess there would be a sweet spot.
[18:31:26] <Jymmm> FinboySlick: with remote control

[18:31:33] <ssi> lol
[18:31:43] <Rab> A car door lock actuator doesn't have a couple of hundred pounds of force.
[18:31:47] <SpeedEvil> FinboySlick: yes - car door lock mechanisms use little geared motors, not solenoids for this reason
[18:31:53] <PetefromTn> http://i.imgur.com/0H0xazD.jpg
[18:31:58] <SpeedEvil> Rab: no, but it will usually have ~30mm or throw
[18:32:08] <Rab> SpeedEvil, oh, you mean an example of a linear actuator?
[18:32:10] <SpeedEvil> Rab: and a force of ~10kg
[18:32:12] <SpeedEvil> yes
[18:32:30] <SpeedEvil> Rab: so with a lever, it goes to 3mm and 100kg

[23:17:58] <zeeshan> or in other words, the most surface area in fins to fit in that area
[23:18:28] <ffurrywol> the most surface area does not result in the most cooling
[23:18:40] <zeeshan> it results in the most heat transfer
[23:18:51] <zeeshan> thats the point of fins
[23:18:51] <ffurrywol> for convection you want thicker fins further spaced, getting thinner the harder you can blow air through them.
