[02:01:49] <owhite> hey people I am trying to run a pico systems universal stepper card with the default .ini files, and I'm getting "waiting for s.axes"
[02:02:47] <owhite> http://pastebin.ca/2207414 dmesg
[02:02:49] <owhite> http://pastebin.ca/2207415 linuxcnc_debug.txt
[02:02:51] <owhite> http://pastebin.ca/2207416 linuxcnc_print.txt
[02:03:00] <owhite> relevant debugging files.
[02:03:06] <owhite> any suggestions?
[02:06:42] <jdh> did you try the diagnostic program?
[02:06:59] <owhite> which'n?
[02:07:09] <jdh> http://pico-systems.com/univstep.html
[02:07:18] <owhite> oh. yes. That's working.
[02:07:38] <jdh> right port address ?
[02:08:36] <owhite> yeah so that was something that I found confusing because there isnt one listed in the default. My parport is at 0x0378
[02:13:59] <owhite> users can specify the parport address with the line: "loadrt hal_ppmc port_addr="0x0378""
[02:14:16] <owhite> which seems to work, and if I change the address it then complains.
[02:14:41] <jdh> might try cranking up the debug level?
[02:14:57] <owhite> with dmesg?
[02:15:15] <jdh> in the .ini, change the debug line
[02:15:31] <jdh> (I know nothing of pico )
[02:15:40] <owhite> okay.
[02:16:45] <jdh> is this a livecd version?
[02:16:59] <owhite> I installed from livecd, yes.
[02:17:39] <owhite> ubuntu 10.04.
[02:18:25] <jdh> only thing I saw was teh fault in dmesg
[02:18:50] <owhite> yeah wasnt really helpful.
[02:19:23] <r00t4rd3d> I brushed off the top of this box i made with an apparently dusty brush. Good thing its dry :/

[02:19:56] <owhite> okay.
[02:20:03] <jdh> nice, did you do that with aspire?
[02:20:09] <r00t4rd3d> yeah

[13:19:56] <jthornton> how do you calculate the frequency of the charge-pump component
[13:27:38] <skunkworks> I would guess 1/2 period?
[13:27:45] * skunkworks likes guessing
[13:30:17] <archivist> depends!
[13:32:03] <JT-Shop> that was my guess kinda sorta, but I'd like to put the forumla in the manual...
[13:40:26] <archivist> it depends on the device you are connecting to
[13:40:42] <JT-Shop> how does it depend?
[13:42:10] <archivist> you are pulsing a filter if it is often enough the voltage will be above a threshold, what is the filters requirements (it is external)
[13:43:44] <JT-Shop> what I'm looking for is how do you calculate the output frequency of the charge-pump component based on the base period lenght
[13:43:44] <archivist> so depends on the R and C or you may have a minimum frequency given by the devices manual
[13:46:01] <skunkworks> yep http://git.linuxcnc.org/gitweb?p=linuxcnc.git;a=blob;f=src/hal/components/charge_pump.comp;h=3a612d1ae2a0a6313b24a8ab6f7df0947adc55c5;hb=HEAD

[13:49:09] <skunkworks> ;)

[15:00:16] <skunkworks> pcw_home, the newer asus motherboards that I tested.. I ran the livecd for a few days - the latency didn't go above 39k...
[15:00:53] <pcw_home> I suspect that theres something in the Atoms the blocks access to hardware (Video DMA maybe?) so a latency test that doesnt access hardware misses this
[15:03:04] <pcw_home> The thread numbers are available from HAL so a HAL comp that reported the max jitter would be nice
[15:03:25] <pcw_home> available to HAL I should say
[15:04:08] <FinboySlick> pcw_home: Are atoms ill affected when it comes to just stepgen too, or is that not demanding on the CPU at all? (sorry for not knowing much of what I'm talking about ;)
[15:06:43] <pcw_home> I'm not sure. The atoms base thread jitter look really good but I have not tested it.
[15:06:44] <pcw_home> I was just poking around with the servo thread to see why you cannot run faster than

[15:07:18] <FinboySlick> I'm just about to place an order for a 5I25 if you have some LP in stock.

[17:41:30] <JT-Shop> odd how aluminum is different by 2 gauges

[17:41:39] <tjb1> I didnt mean aluminum but I didnt see it didnt include steel

[17:42:47] <JT-Shop> 12 gauge is better, more knock down power
[17:42:48] <tjb1> $189 for a 6x10' sheet of 11 gauge steel, sounds good

[17:43:19] <jdh> mrsun: is a human friendly measurement
[17:43:42] <mrsun> jdh, how ? when you got different thicknesses for the same guage number for different materials ...

[22:08:10] <r00t4rd3d> lots of info on it
[22:08:51] <PCW> Those drives have that funny "GND to disable" input so easiest is probably to do what
[22:08:52] <PCW> JT did and add relay with a NC contact than grounds all disables until a output bit (one of the 7I77s outputs)
[22:08:54] <PCW> is turned on by Linuxcnc

[22:12:10] <tjb1> Im planning on 2 of them
[22:12:26] <tjb1> Or maybe one like 4 inches long, that would be sexy
[22:13:02] <PCW> The other possibility with enable (drive pin 8) is to put a fairly stiff pulldown to ground (say 1K) and then use one of the enable OPTOs to pull it up to +15V
[22:13:27] <PCW> drive pin 8
[22:13:38] <sliptonic> PCW: Original wiring has J1-pin4 connected to the tach. J2-pin1 was connected to control.

[22:18:47] <sliptonic> I'm assuming differential input is preferable to single-ended input.
[22:20:14] <PCW> OK then it was jumpered for differential input so TB5.3 goes to J2 pin 2 and J1 pin4, TB5.4 goes to J2 pin1
[22:22:11] <Jymmm> r00t4rd3d: Here's a tip when V-Carving... to clean up the lil "nips" that remain after carving, use a green scotchbright to knock them down/off. Doesn't damage the wood either (as long as you're not too hard on it)
[22:22:29] <tjb1> r00t4rd3d: I was thinking of this.

[22:30:14] <PCW> (make sure that D3 is not jumpered so J1.8 is an enable input only)

[22:36:46] <roycroft> hi folks
[22:37:08] <roycroft> some time ago someone here recommended an intel atom d525 system board as working well with linuxcnc
[22:37:16] <roycroft> i purchased one, and, indeed, it does work quite well
[22:37:31] <roycroft> the board has been discontinued, however, and i wonder if anyone has a recommendation for a replacement
[22:37:48] <roycroft> this is what i originally purchased:
[22:37:51] <roycroft> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121442
[22:38:11] <roycroft> newegg list it as oos, however other vendors show it as discontinued
[22:39:04] -!- ChanServ has quit [*.net *.split]
[22:39:45] <sliptonic> PCW: One more thing. Old wiring had limit switches wired into J1.6,7 Should I continue with that wiring in parallel to the 7i77 inputs?
[22:40:09] <andypugh> roycroft: I think PCW found one.
[22:40:35] <roycroft> one of the same board, or a suitable replacement?
[22:40:49] <andypugh> I am happy with the Intel DN2800, though it is PCIe and the graphics card has issues (OK at 1024x768 on the VGA, but not much else)
[22:41:24] <roycroft> my current project is a pbx, not a cnc controller
[22:41:46] <roycroft> however, the digium fxo/fsx boards have similar interrupt sensitivity
[22:42:04] <roycroft> so i thought a board similar to what i got for the cnc controller would likely do well
[22:42:24] <roycroft> and that intel was cheap, which i also like
[22:42:58] <roycroft> the dn2800 is a bit more, but still relatively inexpensive
[22:43:08] <roycroft> i don't care about graphics at all
[22:43:20] <andypugh> It runs from a 12V jack, which saves buying a PSU
[22:43:26] <roycroft> the thing will boot linux, and i'll occasionally need to go type at the console
[22:43:54] <roycroft> that's pretty cool, although i may need +5v for the digium board
[22:44:28] <PCW> sliptonic because those are active low they may or may not work with the 7I77 inputs (which expect active high inputs)
[22:44:43] <andypugh> http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Dual-Core-Mini-ITX-Motherboard-BOXD525MW/dp/B0041RSC94
[22:45:12] <roycroft> hmm, i didn't see that vendor before
[22:45:14] -!- i_tarzan has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[22:45:25] <andypugh> roycroft: You can pull 5V off of motherboard headers, or the SATA connector.
[22:45:29] <roycroft> i tried ordering from another amazon vendor who took the order and then informed me that they could not fulfill it
[22:45:48] <PCW> so if you have 24V control power, 7I77 inputs would be wired like +24 --> NC limit switch --> 7I77 input
[22:46:10] <roycroft> yeah, i could find 5v if necessary
[22:48:02] <roycroft> perhaps the thing to do is purchase some of the d525 boards while they can still be found, and then hope not to have a need for any more for a while
[22:48:29] <PCW> Theres alao this one:
[22:48:31] <PCW> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128452

[22:49:34] <sliptonic> OK, cool. Thanks!
