[02:49:17] <PetefromTn_> is that like a Zombie driving a miata?
[02:50:42] <PetefromTn_> getting ready to machine the other part of this assembly out in the shop right now. Got it where I want it I think finally. Also got the engraving drawing completed and I am going to probably do that in another operation and run a test on some scrap to make sure it looks okay.
[02:50:53] <PetefromTn_> Should be fine this machine seems to do a nice engraving.

[02:55:09] <PetefromTn_> I am starting to get pissed at my laptop...
[02:55:27] <PetefromTn_> first I thought I had some issues with firefox youtube videos would not play etc.
[02:55:37] <XXCoder> I planned to cut a sheet of wood for my table saw stand but its very rainy so I can't take it outside for more room on floor :(
[02:55:41] <PetefromTn_> Then I updated that and it started working again.
[02:55:57] <PetefromTn_> Now started up the PC this morning and I have video but no damn sound.
[02:56:32] <PetefromTn_> Not sure why but in Device manager there seems to be two drivers loaded for the sound.
[02:56:39] <PetefromTn_> I removed one and it still does not work.
[02:56:58] <PetefromTn_> Then I restarted the computer and checked again and there are two drivers again. SIGH..
[02:57:23] <PetefromTn_> well I gotta try to get this part machined here. Be back in a bit.

[03:00:49] <jdh> you could write to it from mach3?
[03:00:51] <fenugrec> I don't like how the register mapping works in CL, but I thought I was OK.
[03:00:54] <fenugrec> yes
[03:02:49] <fenugrec> Let me see again. I have "write registers map from %QW" selected; and I write 11 holding regs starting at 200. (that's 200 to 210 right?), and "1st variable mapped=0". That means %QW0 is R200, if I'm not mistaken
[03:08:13] <fenugrec> fack
[03:08:53] <fenugrec> HAHAH
[03:09:36] <fenugrec> man, I've been staring at the config screen for hours. By default it's set to offset all modbus address by 1 (for retarded systems that start counting at 1 instead of 0)...
[03:10:43] -!- patrickarlt has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[03:10:46] <jdh> I don't understand that. If you specify staring address, that's what it should use.
[03:10:53] <fenugrec> Apparently not !
[03:11:05] <fenugrec> I'm not kidding, *everything* just started working when I set that back to 0 as it should be.

[03:27:21] <skunkworks> zeeshan: I think you are going to have to reprhase your question... the picture is of a spin forming setup...
[03:27:27] <ssi> zeeshan: I bought a refrigerated drier today
[03:27:41] <zeeshan> skunkworks: i need to make 5" circles
[03:27:45] <zeeshan> i currently am doing it on the cnc mill
[03:27:49] <zeeshan> using a jig i made
[03:27:57] <zeeshan> i wanna try to stack 50 of them at a time on a lathe
[03:28:10] <zeeshan> and wedge em between a chuck and tailstock and turn em in one go
[03:28:11] <skunkworks> zeeshan: probably not...
[03:28:20] <zeeshan> thats apparently how the machinist does it at school
[03:28:27] <zeeshan> but i personally want a second opinion
[03:28:36] <ssi> what's the material
[03:28:37] <zeeshan> i dont need 50 discs flying out and slicing me up
[03:28:41] <zeeshan> stainless
[03:28:43] <zeeshan> and sometimes magnesium
[03:28:51] <ssi> 50 at a time sounds pretty dicey
[03:29:02] <zeeshan> theyre not too thick
[03:29:03] <zeeshan> 32 thou
[03:29:12] -!- almccon has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
[03:29:13] <zeeshan> so that just means 1.6" thick
[03:29:19] <zeeshan> when stacked together
[03:29:38] <zeeshan> ssi the same one we saw on craigslist?
[03:29:39] <ssi> if you use a close to 5" diameter plate on either side it'll probably be ok
[03:29:43] <ssi> yes, the wilkerson
[03:29:47] <zeeshan> nice!
[03:29:56] <zeeshan> yea each side will have a 1" thick plate
[03:29:59] <zeeshan> 5" in diameter
[03:30:08] <ssi> I think you're relatively safe from bodily harm
[03:30:15] <ssi> but I'd be more concerned about them slipping under cutting pressure
[03:30:26] <ssi> light feed and heavy clamping will be required
[03:30:44] <zeeshan> yea =/
[03:31:48] <XXCoder> no way to hold em together internally?
[03:32:30] <zeeshan> nope :{
[03:32:47] <zeeshan> i gotta make like 200 of these samples
[03:32:48] <zeeshan> :{
[03:32:54] <zeeshan> http://i.imgur.com/cSmEPBz.png
[03:32:59] <zeeshan> thats the jig im currently using on the mill
[03:33:06] <zeeshan> i keep on having to mve the long clamp around
[03:33:08] <zeeshan> its annoying
[03:33:12] <ssi> how precise do they need to be?
[03:33:28] <XXCoder> too bad you dont plan any internal holes
[03:33:37] <ssi> too bad you don't have a 1000MW laser
[03:33:41] <fenugrec> oh noooo, CL just froze on me. Exactly 0.2 seconds before I clicked Save
[03:33:49] <XXCoder> it'd be easy to just drill all of em in middle of that planned hole area and just bolt all of em
[03:34:15] <zeeshan> ssi, cant use "jet cutting processes"
[03:34:23] <zeeshan> cause they either change the composition at the edge
[03:34:25] <zeeshan> or leave a shitty finish
[03:34:36] <zeeshan> i'm using these samples for cup drawing tests, hemispherical dome tests
[03:34:41] <zeeshan> so edge finish matters a lot
[03:34:47] <ssi> laser leaves a good finish, but I dunno about the metallurgy of the edge
[03:34:51] <ssi> I imagine it is changed somewhat
[03:34:57] <zeeshan> it changes the material metallurgally
[03:35:04] <zeeshan> and also leaves lines
[03:35:30] <XXCoder> wonder if can "pre-finish" then finish with lathe
[03:35:43] <zeeshan> well i was thinking of making them an octagon
[03:35:45] <XXCoder> laser cut bigger circles than planned then fit em to size
[03:35:45] <zeeshan> using a shear
[03:35:50] <zeeshan> and then finishing it to size
[03:36:02] <zeeshan> XXCoder: cant do that with laser or plasma
[03:36:04] <ssi> are you planning on stacking up square sheets and rounding them on the lathe?
[03:36:21] <ssi> cause an interrupted cut like that is gonna put a lot more stress on your stackup
[03:36:23] <zeeshan> about 1" of material's mechanical properties are effective
[03:36:43] <zeeshan> no, i was thinking of making it an octagon
[03:36:44] <zeeshan> using a shear
[03:36:51] <ssi> that'll be better than square
[03:36:54] <ssi> but still interrupted cut
[03:37:18] <XXCoder> zeeshan: well too bad cant make centeral hole because very easy to round it off with belt sander and hole in middle
[03:37:25] <XXCoder> no cnc nesscary
[03:37:50] <zeeshan> if i could use a round hole
[03:37:58] <zeeshan> i'd stack them all up on a nut and bolt
[03:38:01] <zeeshan> and call it a day :D
[03:38:03] <XXCoder> yeah
[03:38:09] <XXCoder> well what about press?
[03:38:11] <XXCoder> you got one?
[03:38:16] <zeeshan> got like 10 at school
[03:38:17] <zeeshan> lol
[03:38:23] <zeeshan> but again, if you use a microscope
[03:38:30] <zeeshan> you'll see you've changed the material properties
[03:38:37] <zeeshan> (metallurgical structure)
[03:38:37] zz_prtksxna is now known as prtksxna
[03:38:43] <XXCoder> yeah again, press then cut it down to size using lathe
[03:38:51] <zeeshan> machining is the one that leaves the least amount of residual stress
[03:38:57] <zeeshan> if you take it easy
[03:39:06] <XXCoder> easier to stack and cut circle from bigger circle than hexagon
[03:39:23] <zeeshan> you know what i was thinking?
[03:39:33] <zeeshan> mount it in my jig
[03:39:45] <zeeshan> and plunge into it using a grooving tool
[03:39:53] <zeeshan> but the machinist at school made a good point
[03:40:01] <zeeshan> when one layer is cut, the circle will fly out
[03:40:04] <zeeshan> and push against the tool
[03:40:08] <zeeshan> and indent the sample

[03:53:05] <PetefromTn_> jeez man I am NOT getting this M0 command to work right...
[03:54:46] <PetefromTn_> I hand edited my code to input an M0 after I spot drilled, drilled, and then plunged an endmill thru a couple hold down bolt holes. Then I needed it to bring the head back up to my G0 G53 Zo atop the column and hold with the M0 so I can install the bolts and remove the damn clamps.
[03:55:18] <PetefromTn_> for some reason after it does that I get this situation where it wants to go line by line for some reason.
[03:56:54] <PetefromTn_> I hit cycle start and it goes back down to the work and stops. Then I tried to run it from that line and it would not start the spindle at that command. Frustrating. I really need that pause so I can change out the bolts. Otherwise bad shit will happen LOL
[03:58:18] <zeeshan> PetefromTn_: im confused
[03:58:20] <zeeshan> when you call m0
[03:58:22] <zeeshan> it pauses
[03:58:26] <zeeshan> but when you press the play button
[03:58:29] <zeeshan> it starts going line by line?

[04:07:31] <zeeshan> you turn off the spindle before m0
[04:07:41] <zeeshan> but you dont turn it on after
[04:07:50] <PetefromTn_> yeah coolant off, then spindle raises up then turn off spindle.
[04:08:07] <PetefromTn_> yeah I know that is another problem I forgot to add the M3
[04:08:08] <zeeshan> oh okay just making sure
[04:08:30] <zeeshan> code looks good
[04:08:38] <PetefromTn_> but that is not the issue I am trying to fix. I just quickly edited the code at the machine for this..
[04:08:39] <zeeshan> sounds like an interface error :-)
[04:09:17] <PetefromTn_> so you are saying when it goes to the top of the column and waits for me to hit cycle start THEN pause then cycle start again?
[04:09:43] <zeeshan> no, press the pause button , so it is no longer depressed
[04:09:49] <zeeshan> and then press the cycle start (play button)
[04:10:06] <zeeshan> if you just press the play button, it'll keep pausing after each line
[04:10:19] <PetefromTn_> when you say pause do you actually mean pause or the other button that LOOKS like pause but is actually the optional stop button?

[04:11:26] <PetefromTn_> did not seem to do anything.
[04:12:09] <PetefromTn_> Let me tweak the code again and add the spindle start and try this using the run from here command since I already stuffed the hold down bolts in the holes...
[04:13:21] <PetefromTn_> I THINK that button is only to toggle the M1 command as it indicates on the button graphic. That is something we used a lot in the shop I worked in. You can just turn it on and off for proofind a new program and then once it is good to go just turn it off and it runs thru.
[04:13:47] <PetefromTn_> Speaking of which I need to input that M1 in my post for each operation so I can start using that. It comes in handy for proofing code.

[05:45:47] <ssi> nontrivial kinematics have a distinction between "free mode" and "world mode"
[05:45:50] <PetefromTn_> sounds like something you need for a five axis or something.
[05:45:55] <ssi> "World mode" is also called "teleop mode"
[05:46:06] <ssi> in free mode, the joints are independent
[05:46:13] <PetefromTn_> are you driving two motors for an axis or something?
[05:46:23] <ssi> in teleop mode, the kinematics are applied so that multiple joints move to position the axes

[05:46:34] <ssi> I don't know why gantry machines are so damn uncommon :P
[05:46:40] <PetefromTn_> so is that why you need that mode on?

[05:46:54] <ssi> if you want independent homing on a gantry machine, this is how you have to do it

[05:57:05] <ssi> so it's all downhill from there :)
[05:57:17] <PetefromTn_> when you burned down the neighbor's house huh..
[05:57:25] <ssi> yeah
[05:57:40] <ssi> this little toy 40W laser doesn't seem to be that big a deal
[05:57:44] <PetefromTn_> still don't understand why this came out faceted?
[05:57:47] <ssi> now when I get the big monster 150W in here... :)
[05:58:02] <PetefromTn_> is it physically bigger?
[05:58:06] <ssi> much
[05:58:14] <PetefromTn_> will you have to redesign?
[05:58:21] <ssi> depends
[05:58:45] <PetefromTn_> always does heh
[05:58:57] <ssi> I have about 60" to play with as is
[05:59:03] <ssi> the biggest tubes are 1650 and 1850mm
[05:59:35] <ssi> 1850 is 74" looks like?
[05:59:42] <ssi> I'd have to add an extension for that guy heh
[05:59:48] <PetefromTn_> so the laser stays put while the gantry with reflectors runs around like crazy right...
[05:59:56] <ssi> yes
[06:00:11] <PetefromTn_> I can see why people burn up the walls easily.
[06:00:17] <ssi> yeah
[06:01:40] <PetefromTn_> So tomorrow I gotta pocket the back of this baby out and counterbore the bolt holes from the other side. I drilled and tapped a couple more holes in my fixture since the top part is smaller than the base and took advantage of the room.
[06:02:30] <PetefromTn_> Now I can use strap clamps instead of welders clamps to hold my part while I drill it and then the second side I can just clamp it down, counterbore it, then bolt thru those holes and remove the strap clamps.
[06:06:06] <ssi> oh doh I found it

[06:15:00] <ssi> is this like an SAT question?
[06:15:21] <ssi> this is weird... when it homes, if I have my soft limits set up so that the home position is rigcht at the limit,
[06:15:35] <ssi> then when it homes I get exceeded min soft limit error on all three joints, and it doesn't home properly
[06:16:18] <ssi> I have it set up so it homes at the back left
[06:16:32] <ssi> and so that's X0, Y0, and X increases to 48, but Y decreases to -24
[06:16:34] <PetefromTn_> I had my soft limits right near the limit and had something like that happen. I stepped it back a tad.
[06:17:24] <ssi> well but it's exceeding the MIN limit, but it homes to the MAX
[06:17:26] <ssi> I don't get it
[06:18:15] <PetefromTn_> are you using a home offset?
[06:18:18] <ssi> ah there we go

[16:45:17] <cradek> or maybe cut it on your bench grinder and then clean up and square it with a file
[16:45:25] <cradek> (guess I can think of lots of ways)

[19:50:19] <PetefromTn_> He says he thinks once we get the prototype finished and tested it will be a hot item.

[19:51:56] <PetefromTn_> I sat in one today when I was over there.

[20:16:00] <benjamin23> There is FreeCAD, OpenSCAD, heekscad, OpenCASCADE, Blender, and Wing3D
[20:16:04] <benjamin23> what is the difference?
[20:16:17] <PetefromTn_> do you need 3d?
[20:16:22] <benjamin23> some are parametric 3D and others are solid 3D
[20:16:26] <PetefromTn_> are you only doing sheet goods?
[20:16:38] <ssi> btw
[20:16:42] <benjamin23> no, but first I will to get the general idea of how this stuff works
[20:16:44] <ssi> cad doesn't create g-code
[20:16:47] -!- patrickarlt has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
[20:17:08] <ssi> cad is the part where you draw something... cam is converting drawings to toolpaths/gcode
[20:17:14] <PetefromTn_> and Blender is not what I would consider for Cad Cam work. IF you want to make cartoons or movies it kicks ass tho.
[20:17:16] <ssi> also, cad is the EASY PART
[20:17:25] <benjamin23> hahahaha
[20:17:30] <benjamin23> ok
[20:17:52] <benjamin23> so, if we can, start from the genisis
[20:17:56] <PetefromTn_> Do you need 3d?
[20:19:05] <benjamin23> eventually I will need 3D to drop plastic
[20:19:18] <ssi> "drop plastic"?
[20:19:26] phantom is now known as phantoxeD
[20:19:26] <ssi> is that a euphemism for 3d printing?
[20:19:30] <benjamin23> yes
[20:19:43] <benjamin23> just link an inkjet printer drops ink droplets
[20:20:18] <PetefromTn_> understand that basically 3d printing is a huge departure from typical subtractive process machining.
[20:20:32] <benjamin23> ????????
[20:20:53] <benjamin23> is subtractive, in ID10T terms one layer at a time type thing?
[20:21:07] <ssi> subtractive is using a tool to cut something away
[20:21:15] <benjamin23> go it
[20:21:18] <benjamin23> got it
[20:21:20] <PetefromTn_> subtractive meaning you start with a big block of material and whittle away what is NOT the part.
[20:22:14] <benjamin23> ok, so for 2D milling, can the a same program be used also with making 3D designs?
[20:22:29] <PetefromTn_> depends on the program
[20:22:37] <PetefromTn_> but yea generally.
[20:22:50] <PetefromTn_> I use Freecad to do my 3d modeling for instance.
[20:23:22] <PetefromTn_> Then when I get the design sold I often wind up taking the model and converting it to 2d dxfs and taking that into my cam package to machine 2d
[20:23:52] <Tom_itx> i thought you were useing cambam
[20:23:59] <PetefromTn_> You can do an awful lot of stuff with intelligent 2d milling.
[20:24:02] <PetefromTn_> I am
[20:24:20] <PetefromTn_> that is CAM
[20:24:45] <CaptHindsight> http://www.ebay.com/itm/CNC-Shark-HD-2-0-Refurbished-Full-1-Year-Warranty-/141351373246 is this version made any better than the imports or just 2-3x the price?
[20:24:47] <Tom_itx> so you don't draw it in cambam?
[20:24:55] <PetefromTn_> hell no.
[20:25:24] <PetefromTn_> honestly I either draw it in freecad or if it is a real simple quick thing I use an autocad clone.
[20:25:45] <benjamin23> alright. What is OpenSCAD
[20:25:54] <Tom_itx> txt based cad
[20:25:57] <Tom_itx> kinda sucks
[20:25:59] <Tom_itx> imo
[20:26:20] <Tom_itx> reprappers love it
[20:26:22] <PetefromTn_> For instance this assembly I am building right now I modeled in freecad in 3d and then converted to 2d .DXF's to machine the parts.
[20:26:33] <PetefromTn_> what is txt based cad?
[20:26:44] <benjamin23> txt based? so instead of a GUI, everything is done from the command line?
[20:27:07] Cylly is now known as Loetmichel
[20:27:35] <PetefromTn_> From what I understand openscad is more for 3d printer guys but I have no experience with it.

[20:28:02] <PetefromTn_> Apparently Freecad has been somehow setup to be able to accept models done in Openscad now
[20:28:29] <PetefromTn_> Meh I will take a parametric modeler over that any time thanks.
[20:28:51] <Tom_itx> i can import them into solidworks
[20:28:59] <ssi> I like openscad ok
[20:29:04] <PetefromTn_> Having used Solidworks a good bit and then Alibre Cad and currently Freecad they are all quite similar in how you do things.
[20:29:14] <ssi> it's good for the reprapper crowd because the objects are easy to share
[20:29:26] <benjamin23> ok, so FreeCAD for subtractive milling
[20:29:26] <PetefromTn_> that is exactly how I understand it.
[20:29:42] <ssi> but I mostly use solidworks
[20:29:43] <PetefromTn_> no actually Freecad for 3d modeling.
[20:29:45] <ssi> because I'm fluent in it
[20:29:54] <benjamin23> OpenSCAD for starting with nothing and ending with something
[20:29:54] <PetefromTn_> Solidworks kicks ass man.
[20:29:57] <ssi> and nothing worth a shit runs on osx, so if I'm stuck with a vm, I might as well go all the way
[20:30:15] <ssi> I guess I could give freecad another shot
[20:30:23] <ssi> but that doesn't solve the cam problem, does it
[20:30:34] <PetefromTn_> benjamin23 No man the addititive process or subtractive process really has nothing to do with the Cad in 3d.
[20:30:44] <benjamin23> I'm lost
[20:31:04] <PetefromTn_> OpenScad or freecad are what you use to create the model of the part you want to make.

[20:32:47] <PetefromTn_> think of CAD as the design phase and Cam as the actual programming the machine phase.
[20:33:28] <benjamin23> and linuxCNC takes the g-code produced by the CAM programmed and causes motor movement?
[20:33:30] <PetefromTn_> CAD--- Computer Aided Design CAM ----Computer Aided Manufacturing or machining
[20:33:55] <PetefromTn_> linux CNC interprets the code generated by the CAM program and turns it into machine movements yes..
[20:35:01] <PetefromTn_> understand that the CAM is not automatic whatsoever. There is a LOT of careful thought and setup in CAM that take some experience and understanding of milling and turning processes.
[20:35:02] <Tom_itx> openscad spits out the gcode in layers for their repraps

[20:49:13] <Tom_itx> naw, waste some more time here first
[20:49:26] <PetefromTn_> I sure can waste time here man. TOO much time.
[20:49:36] <ssi> you and me both buddy
[20:49:41] <ssi> at least I'm wasting someone else's time right now
[20:49:42] <PetefromTn_> Honestly most of the time I am doing Cad Cam stuff while I am chatting.
[20:50:03] <PetefromTn_> I am a good multi tasker NOT.

[20:59:44] <ssi> tonight I need to get the spindle output hooked up to my tube power supply so I can control current via software
[21:00:26] <ssi> then I can try to get the tube pretty well centered and leveled in the frame, tape up the side of the machine, and pop a hole in the tape to find the beam location, measure that and make a first mirror mount

[21:39:01] <anarchos2> what's the best way to wire up my motors to my driver/control box? I'm running 8 wire steppers in parallel...would it be better to get 8 wire connectors, then run 4 wires to my controller from the back of the connector, or run 8 wires all the way to my driver?
[21:39:13] <anarchos2> seems like just running 4 inside of my box would make it a bit neater
[21:39:51] <anarchos2> also i could get 4/20 wire probably...would be much easier than finding 8/20 wire (or running 8 strands seperately)
[21:42:25] <Tom_itx> isn't 20ga a bit thin?
[21:42:55] <anarchos2> i'm pretty sure they leads on my motor are 20ga
[21:43:01] <anarchos2> i should double check :P
[21:43:19] <anarchos2> they're only nema 23, 2.something amps each
[21:43:55] <anarchos2> the leads coming out of the motor are actually 22ga
[21:44:01] <Tom_itx> i used a spool of 4/18 shielded
[21:44:33] <Tom_itx> i'd certainly use shielded wire whatever way you go
[21:46:19] <anarchos2> yeah. i think i might go with these, http://www.cnc4pc.com/Store/osc/product_info.php?products_id=296?osCsid=0f0b4b109322de9940c4fdab402ea3a3

[21:46:51] <anarchos2> they come with a 4 pin connector, so i could go from 8-4 wires at that connector, get another matching connector to pass through my box
