[00:02:18] <Connor> jdh: Did you use ballscrew on your Z ? If so, what's your backlash on it ?
[00:05:37] -!- gonzo_ has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[00:05:40] <jdh> I think I have the compensation set to one thou

[00:06:03] <jdh> I would have thought it would be asymmetrical, but it isn't
[00:07:22] <zeeshan|2> how are u getting 1 thou!
[00:07:22] <zeeshan|2> :P

[00:08:05] <zeeshan|2> ebay screws?

[00:08:21] <zeeshan|2> i get 3.5 thou
[00:08:27] <jdh> not off ebay, but same d00d
[00:08:27] <zeeshan|2> on Z
[00:08:39] <zeeshan|2> using compensation for it
[00:08:40] <jdh> did check your nuts?
[00:08:41] <zeeshan|2> seems to work really good
[00:08:42] <zeeshan|2> yes
[00:08:54] <zeeshan|2> i checked the bearing spacing
[00:09:05] <jdh> I can't get to that box at the moment
[00:09:07] <zeeshan|2> and the nut
[00:09:21] <zeeshan|2> by nut ure talking about the nut that holds the screw
[00:09:25] <zeeshan|2> on the fixed end?
[00:09:46] <jdh> no, the ballnut
[00:09:48] <zeeshan|2> oh
[00:09:59] <jdh> not all of mine came with enough balls
[00:10:05] <zeeshan|2> yes they were both disassembled
[00:10:12] <zeeshan|2> it was like 17 balls in the 16mm
[00:10:23] <zeeshan|2> and like 25 or 26 in the 25mm
[00:10:29] <zeeshan|2> per circuit
[00:10:43] <jdh> this is the Z on my mill
[00:10:50] <jdh> never checked lash on the lathe
[00:10:59] <zeeshan|2> o
[00:11:06] <zeeshan|2> screws should be same
[00:11:06] <jdh> http://raleigh.craigslist.org/tls/4546383215.html
[00:11:20] <jdh> yeah but on the mill there is a lot of weight pushing down.
[00:11:24] <zeeshan|2> ohh
[00:11:35] <zeeshan|2> jdh yoiur lathe is better
[00:11:37] <zeeshan|2> dont buy that pos
[00:11:42] <jdh> I'm not.
[00:11:46] <jdh> my lathe is a PoS
[00:11:54] <jdh> I knew that when I bought it though.
[00:12:10] <jdh> a 9x20 is pretty much a 7x just a little bigger
[00:12:46] <zeeshan|2> your lathe is perfect
[00:12:49] <zeeshan|2> for 99% of the jobs out there
[00:12:59] <zeeshan|2> its not like you'll be turning rifles
[00:13:01] <zeeshan|2> or are you? :P
[00:13:12] <jdh> it would be if the X could be done.
[00:13:19] <jdh> nope, I just buy rifles
[00:13:21] -!- thomaslindstr_m has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[00:13:23] <zeeshan|2> you're almost there
[00:13:46] <jdh> nope. I can't put holes in it for that craptastic design
[00:13:58] <zeeshan|2> mines pretty shitty
[00:14:01] <zeeshan|2> it hangs out so much lol
[00:14:14] <jdh> sticking out would be fine.
[00:14:18] -!- anth0ny has quit [Quit: anth0ny]
[00:14:25] <jdh> in front or behind isn't
[00:14:47] <zeeshan|2> yea in front it interferes with chuck
[00:14:56] <zeeshan|2> and in rear it means extending tailstock more
[00:19:54] <zeeshan|2> man
[00:19:57] <jdh> I can put thsi one back together and sell it for more than I paid
[00:19:58] <zeeshan|2> is g76 not a standard g code
[00:20:11] <zeeshan|2> jdh, what will you get instead of it
[00:20:27] <zeeshan|2> what are you realistically going to be making on it?
[00:20:46] <jdh> probably a 10x or 12x. or just a g0602
[00:21:02] <jdh> I will probably make a thread on a rod.
[00:21:07] <zeeshan|2> haha
[00:21:17] <zeeshan|2> one guy who made me respect smaller lathes
[00:21:17] <zeeshan|2> is
[00:21:17] <jdh> then lose interest.
[00:21:24] <zeeshan|2> 'doubleboost' on youtube
[00:21:33] <zeeshan|2> i think his lathe is 7" er
[00:21:48] <zeeshan|2> and he makes so many different things on it
[00:21:49] <jdh> it's not the smallness. it is the 9x specifically
[00:22:02] <zeeshan|2> whats wrong with 9x

[00:22:24] <jdh> it is flimsy.
[00:22:35] <zeeshan|2> did you run it manually?
[00:22:41] <jdh> not really.
[00:22:47] <jdh> criagslist
[00:22:50] <zeeshan|2> then you're basing it off other people's opinion :P
[00:23:05] <zeeshan|2> flimsy just means you gotta not do .25" doc in aluminum
[00:23:10] <zeeshan|2> you can prolly do .125"
[00:23:19] <jdh> heh, I tried cleaning up some brass
[00:23:30] <jdh> it wasn't pretty
[00:23:34] <zeeshan|2> were you manually feeding?
[00:23:46] <jdh> tool + toolpost deflects
[00:23:48] <zeeshan|2> its pretty hard to get a nice finish
[00:23:54] <zeeshan|2> w/ manual feed
[00:24:05] <zeeshan|2> okay to give you an idea
[00:24:06] <jdh> it wasn't the finish, it ws the pushing away then catching
[00:24:09] <zeeshan|2> when i pull with approximately 100lb
[00:24:14] <zeeshan|2> my tool post deflects 2 thou
[00:24:22] <zeeshan|2> in both x and Z direction
[00:24:29] <zeeshan|2> (direction of pull + measurement)
[00:24:39] -!- KimK [KimK!~Kim__@ip68-102-30-143.ks.ok.cox.net] has joined #linuxcnc
[00:24:45] <zeeshan|2> also, if im machining say aluminum 1/2"
[00:24:56] <zeeshan|2> the whole work piece will deflect away from the tool
[00:25:04] <jdh> my 7x feels more rigid
[00:25:07] <zeeshan|2> cause the part doesnt have the natural rigidity
[00:25:21] <zeeshan|2> how much does the 9x weigh
[00:25:28] <zeeshan|2> if its more than 500lb
[00:25:36] <jdh> I can pick itup
[00:25:36] <zeeshan|2> its rigid enough :P
[00:25:43] <zeeshan|2> okay
[00:25:43] <zeeshan|2> haha
[00:25:46] <zeeshan|2> that's not rigid enough then
[00:25:55] <zeeshan|2> unless youre superman
[00:26:06] <zeeshan|2> in which case you wouldnt even need a lathe to machine
[00:26:08] <jdh> nope.
[00:26:09] <zeeshan|2> you could machine with your hands

[00:29:45] <zeeshan|2> ...
[00:29:47] <zeeshan|2> thats HARDCORE
[00:29:55] <zeeshan|2> that's an excellent idea
[00:30:47] <zeeshan|2> maybe i should do that
[00:30:50] <zeeshan|2> and get rid of the overhanging ball screw
[00:31:34] <zeeshan|2> http://i.imgur.com/nw7kPgh.jpg
[00:31:51] <zeeshan|2> i could make a spacer block
[00:32:05] <zeeshan|2> that raise the whole assembly
[00:32:21] <zeeshan|2> but it still doesnt help the fact that
[00:32:28] <zeeshan|2> the cross-rib hole
[00:32:29] <zeeshan|2> is in the way

[00:36:28] <zeeshan|2> that actually doesnt look too bad.
[00:36:43] <zeeshan|2> it will definitely interfere and limit the capacity
[00:36:47] <zeeshan|2> of parts when using a 4 j aw
[00:37:29] <zeeshan|2> why do ball nuts need t obe so huge :{
[00:38:00] <jdh> if I could hang mine out the back, I'd be reasonably happy.
[00:38:35] <zeeshan|2> how much extra would you have to extend your tail stock
[00:38:36] <zeeshan|2> 1"?
[00:38:57] <jdh> 1.5 maybe
[00:39:16] <jdh> depending on which way you orient the flange on the nut
[00:39:32] <zeeshan|2> i'd just turn it down flat
[00:39:34] <zeeshan|2> on both sides
[00:39:36] <zeeshan|2> and use 2 bolts only
[00:41:01] <jdh> I'd grind it down, them embed it in MDF

[01:16:42] <Connor> jdh: Going to be ordering my ball screws. Double nuts. Debating on double nut for the Z or not. Hoss didn't do it yet.. not sure how long of a screw I would need.
[01:16:58] <Connor> might want to get it a tad longer just in case...
[01:17:27] <Connor> I don't plan on changing the Z saddle around and extending the Z height...
[01:18:03] <jdh> won't double nuts kill the Y?
[01:18:17] <Connor> No.
[01:18:49] <Connor> You just mill out a bit more on the front of the base.
[01:19:02] <Connor> I should be able to get 9" of travel.
[01:20:47] <jdh> my Z ballnut mount is still Delrin
[01:21:27] <Connor> Which way does the Flange face on the Y? Front or back ?
[01:21:50] <jdh> teh opposite of the way it comes
[01:22:08] <jdh> so, on the back
[01:22:22] <Connor> So flange AWAY from the milled end on the screw ...
[01:22:27] <jdh> yeah
[01:22:43] <jdh> you have to take it off anyway.
[01:22:52] <jdh> maybe not if you put it in from the bottom
[01:23:04] <Connor> I'll ask them to flip it the other way.. I don't want to dick around with trying to put it in.
[01:23:16] <Connor> What if there is a hole in the back of the mill ?
[01:23:19] <Connor> for clearance ?
[01:23:38] <jdh> to what end?
[01:24:13] <jdh> oh. maybe if it was big enough to angle the screw in
[01:24:32] <jdh> thought about rear-mount belt drive?
[01:24:37] <Connor> Well.. you mill out 1.25" front and back of the base.
[01:24:41] <jdh> that would look a lot cleaner
[01:25:03] <Connor> No room if I do the 2" Extension.
[01:25:05] <jdh> I turned down a woodend dowel to fit the nut and it was pretty easy.
[01:25:39] <Connor> I've had BAD luck with trying to get ball nuts back on the screws.
[01:26:04] <jdh> I ended up taking all 3 of mine off.
[01:26:13] <Connor> Really?
[01:26:24] <jdh> but I reloaded the other two on the screw
[01:27:03] <jdh> I dumped all the balls. The Z was short. teh one I ground melted the plastic a little so I took it apart to clean it up.

[01:58:38] <zeeshan|2> XXCoder: that sux
[01:58:48] <ssi> zeeshan|2: yes... the tool cuts on the whole flank so you can't cut real deep per pass
[01:58:58] <XXCoder> yeah but in least got enough money to buy another car, but I needed in least 600 more for decent one
[01:59:02] <zeeshan|2> ssi makes no sense though dude
[01:59:09] <zeeshan|2> it should be taking deeper passes in the first 2-3 passes
[01:59:12] <zeeshan|2> and then going gradually slower
[01:59:17] <zeeshan|2> like g76 rdoes
[01:59:27] <zeeshan|2> slower = lower depth of cut

[15:24:00] <CaptHindsight> http://www.pbclinear.com/SIMO-Series-Components
[15:24:48] <CaptHindsight> not as true and straight as good profile bearings but better than just using t-slot as a bearing rail
[15:25:21] <ssi> CaptHindsight: well this kit uses the makerslide stuff, so it's still better than just using t-slot
[15:25:34] <ssi> it's got four delrin v-rollers on bearings on extruded in V rails

[16:32:58] <JesusAlos> ssi:
[16:33:31] <JesusAlos> about my hipotetic Backlash case, I try several test
[16:34:07] <JesusAlos> and conclude that when appear this error, the motor don't do any move
[16:34:48] <JesusAlos> so, in my case don't have backlash problem. Is ohter problem, but don't know why
[16:35:28] <JesusAlos> remember, when I do a circle, the vertical faces are lines
[16:38:30] -!- anth0ny has quit [Client Quit]
[16:38:30] <zeeshan|2> backlash is easy to detect
[16:38:32] <zeeshan|2> with dial indicators
[16:38:39] <zeeshan|2> and a little bit of force :P
[16:41:03] <ssi> yes, it's easy to detect
[16:41:18] <ssi> unless, for some reason, you're invested in convincing yourself it's not backlash
[16:41:30] <zeeshan|2> just pull on the axis
[16:41:33] <zeeshan|2> in one direction
[16:41:34] <ssi> then it's easy to not measure it and try to convince yourself and others that it's something else
[16:41:53] <zeeshan|2> 0 indicator. pull in same direction, make sure the axis flexes and when you remove force, it goes back to 0
[16:42:00] <zeeshan|2> with one good push in the opposite direction
[16:42:06] <zeeshan|2> read the indicator after it settles
[16:42:10] <zeeshan|2> = backlash #
[16:42:30] <ssi> zeeshan|2: that won't measure backlash in any couplers and/or gear reductions
[16:42:38] <zeeshan|2> yes
[16:42:45] <zeeshan|2> but im assuming its in the ballnut

[16:43:04] <ssi> best way to do it is to put dti on the axis and jog incrementally one direction til it moves, then zero the indicator, then step the other way until it moves, and count the increments that don't move the dial
[16:43:15] <zeeshan|2> yea, thats another way to do it
[16:43:19] <zeeshan|2> but that involves electronics :P
[16:43:35] <ssi> yeah but if he's failing to cut round circles, the electronics are already sorted out

[18:53:57] <CaptHindsight> alexchally: it should be easy since it'a already cnc with ballscrews
[18:54:29] <alexchally> CaptHindsight, yeah, and the drivers and encoders are already broken out with nice milspec connectors
[18:54:57] <alexchally> I was hoping someone would have done it and already have a config in EMC that I could load up/take a look at
[18:55:07] <CaptHindsight> you'll probably spends more time ordering parts and tuning than converting
[18:55:43] <CaptHindsight> alexchally: steppers and a glass scale for only Z?
[18:55:56] <alexchally> I have done an open loop EMC setup on a knee mill in the past(geko servo drivers), but I have not had to interface with a linear encoder yet, thats the big unknown
[18:56:00] <CaptHindsight> or do all three axis have encoders/scales
[18:56:06] -!- syyl_ws_ has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[18:56:21] <CaptHindsight> I almost always use servos
[18:56:26] <CaptHindsight> it's no big deal
[18:56:41] <alexchally> CaptHindsight, glass scales on all three axis, servos w/ 10V analog input on X and Y, no motor on Z(yet)
[18:56:41] <Jymmm> other than checkbook =)
[18:56:45] <CaptHindsight> find out the output spec for the encoders
[18:57:11] <alexchally> although if I can X and Y working in a timely manner I will throw a 1HP servo I have laying around on Z and do that too.
[18:58:20] <alexchally> hmmm, just realized that the X and Y axis are actually rotary encoders
[18:58:27] <alexchally> had never looked very carefully

[19:07:20] <Jymmm> app*
[19:13:01] <_methods> drawing app?
[19:13:20] <Jymmm> vector drawing/cad, etc
[19:13:20] <_methods> what are you using?
[19:13:43] <_methods> you tried draftsight for just 2d cad?
[19:13:44] <Jymmm> CorelDraw, but even SolidWorks has bugs too, *ALL* gfx apps do

[19:18:32] <_methods> yeah i try to keep that to a min
[19:18:36] <_methods> do it all in solidworks
[19:18:51] <_methods> every once in awhile i have to use inkscape for something

[19:20:00] <_methods> i just want a gawt dayum dxf
[19:20:29] <_methods> i eventually just gave up and use eagle pcb to gcode
[19:20:39] <Jymmm> _methods: The issue wth inkscape is it's designed for relative not absolute units, and it's a known bug for years, but it's due to the SVG specs.

[23:42:48] <alexchally> yeah
[23:42:59] <alexchally> does that sound like a reasonable set of hardware?
[23:43:48] <CaptHindsight> alexchally: how many of those encoders, how many glass scales, how many steppers and how many servos?
[23:44:03] <K6MLE> I expect to have a G540 arriving tomorrow, but I'm wondering if the problem isn't the driver, but the configuration?
[23:44:36] <CaptHindsight> alexchally: you can mix and match, it just makes the configs a bit more complicated
[23:44:43] <CaptHindsight> but not by much
[23:44:57] <alexchally> CaptHindsight, 2 of those encoders, and 2 servos for now, I would like to use the glass scale and a third servo later to drive the Z axis
[23:45:16] <alexchally> but that would require fitting a ball screw to the Z axis and all that jazz
[23:45:22] <alexchally> so thats on the back burner for now
[23:45:41] <andypugh> K6MLE: Sounds like the setup times might not be long enogh.
[23:45:58] <CaptHindsight> alexchally: sounds good
[23:47:08] <andypugh> K6MLE: I think Stepconf might even have presets for the G540
[23:47:10] <K6MLE> Andy -- I've got Step time at 10000ns, Direction Hold at 11000ns and Direction Setup at 3000ns.
[23:47:52] <andypugh> You only ever change direction at low speed. You can probably afford 100x longer for those.
[23:48:24] <K6MLE> I'm hoping to try the G540 presets ... this current setup is a SOC Robotics MM160/MK4c.
[23:48:25] <andypugh> 10uS is probably OK for step length.
[23:48:30] <alexchally> CaptHindsight, and just to make sure, i can't try reading those encoders in via paraport instead, right? that won't be fast enough?
[23:48:58] <andypugh> alexchally: Do the maths, to be sure
[23:49:20] <K6MLE> How critical is Step Space?
[23:49:36] <K6MLE> Current Step Space is 5000ns.
[23:49:45] <andypugh> Pretty important, but it normally ends up being the rest of the base period.
[23:50:16] <andypugh> What is the base period?
[23:50:35] <K6MLE> The Base Period is at 5000ns right now.
[23:50:46] <K6MLE> I think that's a default.

[23:51:47] <CaptHindsight> alexchally: you can just at lower speeds, we used to do that back in the early 90's on slow machines
[23:52:50] <CaptHindsight> alexchally: IIRC we used PC-XT mainboards with LPT ports for testing, they only ran at 16MHz core speed
