[00:21:45] -!- denishaskin has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
[00:23:42] <CaptHindsight> I need to find a low cost USB camera for edge detection that can be mounted next to a spindle with ~50mm(2") working distance
[00:25:01] <CaptHindsight> http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Adding_Digital_Zoom_To_Camview-Emc the HD5000 isn't bad but it could use improvement
[00:25:51] <CaptHindsight> http://blog.f1oat.org/tag/hd5000/
[00:26:44] <CaptHindsight> "optical resolution of the webcam at this distance is about 0.1mm per point. I have tried few pointings and achieved an accuracy better than 0.05mm. Surprisingly, that is better than pixel resolution. I think that is possible because we can see when the hole stands between 2 pixels"
[00:27:39] <CaptHindsight> 2-4x that res and everyone should be happy
[00:28:18] <XXCoder1> what about one of those compyter microscopes
[00:29:24] <CaptHindsight> http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-LifeCam-HD-5000-720p-Webcam/dp/B002XN7C6W/ref=sr_1_4/177-7239133-4253965?ie=UTF8&qid=1395275333&sr=8-4&keywords=hd+5000+webcam

[00:29:49] -!- skunkworks_ [skunkworks_!~chatzilla@str-broadband-ccmts-ws-26.dsl.airstreamcomm.net] has joined #linuxcnc
[00:31:05] <andypugh> CaptHindsight: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR11.TRC1.A0.H0.Xusb+endoscope&_nkw=usb+endoscope&_sacat=0&_from=R40
[00:32:57] <CaptHindsight> andypugh: those would offer protection from coolant as well
[00:33:04] <andypugh> Indeed :-)
[00:33:32] <_methods> and feces
[00:33:53] <andypugh> Ideal for looking up old friends.

[00:35:36] -!- andypugh has quit [Quit: andypugh]
[00:38:24] <CaptHindsight> the problem with the endoscopes will be the lens, not much working distance
[00:41:18] <XXCoder1> guess so
[00:47:53] <CaptHindsight> 720p webcams are the sweet spot for price vs res
[00:48:29] -!- almccon has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
[00:51:56] <CaptHindsight> for 25um res per pixel 1280 x 720p = 32 x 18 mm, so I don't think any standard webcam will be able to focus that close
[00:53:13] -!- sumpfralle has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[01:00:07] <CaptHindsight> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmdKbX46z8w not sure if he modded that lens

[01:18:38] -!- erictheise has quit [Quit: erictheise]

[13:25:57] <skunkworks> correct.

[13:28:02] <R2E4> one is power on, second one is machine-is-on or drive is enabled, and the third is a command from the controller. This is the way it was before.

[13:31:59] <skunkworks> we actually had the y axis drive go flakey and do this exact thing
[13:32:39] <R2E4> could add drive enabled input as a condition to release the brake.

[14:21:09] <GuShH_> tjtr33: no, single or full rectified 240 is always going to be near to 340VDC, what are you talking about?
[14:21:15] <GuShH_> perhaps you got your terms wrong.
[14:21:26] <CaptHindsight> kengu: even though they are differential pairs you'll still want to use good practice when routing. Not near other high voltage or high current sources etc etc
[14:22:24] <tjtr33> please read , its was single rectification not full wave not filtered
[14:22:40] <tjtr33> yes your terms are wrong
[14:22:42] <kengu> yeah. that is the tricky part as it is a plasma cutter but I'll try
[14:22:43] <GuShH_> single means 1 diode in series, it will peak to over 340
[14:23:03] <GuShH_> tjtr33: you are misguiding him and YOUR terms are wrong
[14:23:56] <tjtr33> the guy who needs to relase the brake, make a simple test and abvouid the info your get here. the meter will tell you the truth
[14:24:09] <pcw_home> 120V with 1/2 wave rectifier and no filter should be close
[14:24:23] <tjtr33> no hten GuShH_ would be wrong!
[14:24:52] <GuShH_> my god you are a major troll
[14:24:56] <GuShH_> have you ever studied EE to begin with
[14:25:15] <GuShH_> or are you an ass crack branding electrician with electrical tape ear-rings?
[14:25:17] <pcw_home> (though I dont know if there enough inductance to reduce the 60 Hz ripple enough)
[14:25:54] <GuShH_> that's up to the coil's field, neither of you know the details -which were asked by me but got no response-
[14:26:13] <pcw_home> for a capacitor input filter you want about 65VAC
[14:26:18] <tjtr33> hope the guy with the brake gets what he needs
[14:27:41] <GuShH_> hope is not part of any electrical equation
[14:28:43] <pcw_home> Since it was run before with no filter and fullwave rect at 100VAC that might be easiest
[14:28:45] <pcw_home> (if th e100VAC is still around)
[14:29:03] <GuShH_> you would have to introduce a series resistor and "HOPE".
[14:29:06] <R2E4> I am going to give it exactly what it had before. 100vac going through a full wav bridge =>snubber=solenoid(in the moor)
[14:29:21] <GuShH_> who uses 100vac?
[14:29:30] <R2E4> The japaneese.
[14:29:31] <pcw_home> Japanese
[14:29:43] <GuShH_> they still do? not 110-120?
[14:29:46] -!- qingpei has quit [Quit: qingpei]
[14:29:58] <GuShH_> are you in Japan?
[14:30:08] <R2E4> no, but I have a Japaneese machine
[14:30:23] <GuShH_> what's your mains voltage
[14:30:25] <pcw_home> Most Fanuc drives of the 80s's/90's have 100 VAC somewhere
[14:30:39] <R2E4> 220 3 phase
[14:30:47] <GuShH_> what the homebrew electrician was trying to suggest won't work unless you introduce a limiting factor, or you don't care to fry the coil
[14:31:41] <pcw_home> do what was originally done: 100VAC --> Bridge --> coil
[14:31:46] <GuShH_> excess heat will eventually break down the insulation, specially given the vibrations of over-driving it
[14:31:58] <R2E4> yeah, thats what I'll do pcw
[14:32:29] <pcw_home> and arc suppressors!
[14:33:03] * GuShH_ gives up on homebrews
[14:33:22] <GuShH_> do whatever you want, in fact, hook it up to your stick welder in reverse for all I care now.
[14:33:27] <R2E4> IT has one allready. I left it intact. I have just a pair of wires to apply 90vdc...
[14:33:52] <R2E4> haha, GuShH: what did you eat for breakfast?
[14:34:10] <GuShH_> R2E4: a sensible conversion is performed by using an auto-transformer with multiple taps, which will get you 120, 110, 100 VAC to choose from.
[14:34:21] <skunkworks> eh - sometimes doing everything 'by the book' isn't worth the time and effort..
[14:34:36] <GuShH_> that's how it's done in the industry, now if you are a ghetto ass duct-tape-riggin-white-trash-dont-care guy, go ahead.
[14:34:51] <GuShH_> skunkworks: sometimes drinking and driving is OK, until someone dies too.
[14:34:58] * jdh whips out the duct tape
[14:35:00] <GuShH_> it's all OK until you fry it.
[14:35:11] <GuShH_> a hamster on a dc generator will be OK.
[14:35:15] <CaptHindsight> good thing I didn't mention running a cord over from Japan
[14:35:26] <skunkworks> heh
[14:35:39] <R2E4> I didnt want to replace everything in the machine.
[14:35:50] <skunkworks> our matsuura at the moment is being run by extention cord...
[14:36:16] <GuShH_> what you can do is either use a simple triac chopper, or series diode with a limiting factor (namely a resistor) you can then filter to reduce harmonics and noise, the snubber is doing another job, which is to dampen the back emf and nothing else.
[14:36:58] <GuShH_> but go ahead, fry it or abuse it however you wish, not my equipment!
[14:37:09] <R2E4> IT is getting the exact same thing it had before. How is that abusing it?
[14:37:18] <GuShH_> an autotransformer costs close to nothing you probably already have one as well.
[14:37:39] <R2E4> What do I need an autotransformer for?
[14:37:52] <GuShH_> you have 220 mains, unless you introduce a resistor you'll be giving it peaks of three to four times it's rated voltage.
[14:38:02] <GuShH_> good luck.
[14:38:19] <R2E4> giving what?
[14:38:21] <GuShH_> don't whine once it cooks up after a while!
[14:38:30] <R2E4> WTF are you talking about?
[14:38:45] <GuShH_> you shouldn't be near a couple wires if you can't read that.
[14:39:08] <R2E4> The machine takes 220 3 ph, thats exactly what I am giving it.
[14:39:25] -!- tjtr33 has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[14:40:11] <GuShH_> Prior to that, you said it was Japanese made and it took 100VAC, that the coil required 90VDC.
[14:40:15] <GuShH_> Get your shit straight first.
[14:40:33] <R2E4> There's transformer in there that supplys 100vac, which is used for switching and what not.
[14:40:33] <GuShH_> Don't waste everyone's time.
[14:40:52] <GuShH_> Then there's already an autotransformer, which was mentioned and you said "why would I want one of those"

[14:43:17] <R2E4> Never heard of a multitap transformer being called an autotransformer
[14:44:20] <GuShH_> a transformer which has only a primary is called an auto-transformer
[14:44:41] <GuShH_> it's commonly used to switch from 110 to 220 and vice-versa, some have multi-taps to switch between all standards.
[14:44:55] <GuShH_> there's no need for isolation on that case, so no secondary is present...
[14:45:01] <GuShH_> makes it cheaper to manufacture, just one winding.
[14:45:11] <GuShH_> it's a split inductor....
[14:45:23] <GammaX> archivist, you have a manual to that lathe by any chance?
[14:45:39] <GuShH_> I have one on my fridge, just because you haven't heard of the right term doesn't mean they don't exist...
[14:45:52] * jdh applies the duct tape
[14:46:06] <R2E4> never said it didnt exist.

[14:47:32] <R2E4> Anyway, theres a few 3ph tansformers in there that take the 220 mains and supply voltages for several things. one of which is 100vac for the switching and it goes to a bridege rect, that is sent to the brake.
[14:47:39] <R2E4> through contacts
[14:48:07] * R2E4 removes the duct tape
[14:48:10] <GuShH_> That's fine, but until just NOW we didn't know the step-down was already present, which is why all of those suggestions were given
[14:48:23] <GuShH_> it was most likely already retro-fitted.
[14:48:38] <R2E4> no, those are from the factory.
[14:48:38] <GuShH_> you are not playing with a machine that hasn't been modified before.
[14:48:53] <GuShH_> why would they need the transformer, if they have 100vac in Japan.
[14:49:11] <GuShH_> unless all of the control circuit is way under voltage than what you expect.
[14:49:18] <R2E4> the machine's main supply is 220 3 ph
[14:49:31] <GuShH_> why even mention it's japanese, if it was always 220
[14:49:48] <GuShH_> you are full of shit sir. I suggest you quit on the pills or the booze, whatever is messing with your head.
[14:49:48] <R2E4> because they use 100vac
[14:49:52] <GuShH_> fuck sake.
[14:50:11] <GuShH_> they wouldn't in the industry they most likely use 220 or 380 or 600

[14:51:35] <R2E4> theres no hope in electronics

[23:17:23] <Einar> My question too. But that seems to be the way this board works.
[23:17:46] <PCW> Actually they all work that way
[23:18:36] <Einar> I feel a bit lost since there is no physical pin where I can connect my scope to. :-(
[23:18:59] <Einar> On PID inputs and outputs, that is.
[23:19:00] <PCW> (though in the Mesa and LinuxCNC software stepgen the feedback loop is built into the driver)
[23:19:17] <PCW> halscope
[23:19:36] <PCW> but the stepgen PID should not need tuning
[23:19:53] <Einar> I never got friendly with halscope. It's too different from my Fluke and Tek scopes.
[23:21:12] <PCW> Not familiar with Picosystems stepgens but another possible cause of "catching up" is not enough velocity headroom
[23:21:44] <PCW> but halscoping ferror will tell you if you have a tuning issue
[23:21:50] <JT-Shop> oh this is a pico systems board?
[23:22:06] <JT-Shop> Jon is on the forum and will help you out
[23:22:08] <Einar> Yes.
[23:22:35] <JT-Shop> have you been to the forum?
[23:23:54] <Einar> Yes. Here: http://linuxcnc.org/index.php/english/forum/26-turning/26991-converting-a-boxford-250b
