[01:12:36] <PetefromTn_> evenin'
[01:14:00] <R2E4_> Hey Pete.
[01:14:06] <R2E4_> Howz it going?
[01:14:14] <PetefromTn_> pretty good you?
[01:14:41] <R2E4_> Good. Had to stop working on my VMC for a couple weeks. Had a run of 400 urns in bamboo to do.
[01:15:34] <R2E4_> Got the X and Y working. Havent donme final tuning yet but did my button panel, cleaned up some wiring, and working on my mpg now.
[01:15:59] <PetefromTn_> awesome... Cannot wait to see that bad boy running.
[01:16:02] <R2E4_> my pidis at -100, 0, 0 . Have to research and get that done.
[01:16:24] <R2E4_> Have you done any work on your toolchanger?
[01:16:50] <PetefromTn_> actually today has been a BANNER day for work on the machine LOL...
[01:17:13] <PetefromTn_> My good pal Connor came over today for several hours and we did a bunch of stuff on the machine.
[01:17:22] <R2E4_> IF I was there I'd be atBristol this weekend....hehe
[01:17:59] <R2E4_> Is it working good? accurate?
[01:18:32] <PetefromTn_> We got the final touches on the modbus spindle control and I got my buttons working for fwd an rev which were lost somehow with the original modbus setup.
[01:18:47] -!- rob_h has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
[01:19:04] <R2E4_> ah cool. I have my Z and spindle servos to donext.
[01:19:28] <R2E4_> Apparant;y I need anew spacebar...lol
[01:20:41] <R2E4_> Filled my coolant resevoir up with water added the coolant poil and the coolant pump was fantastic, up until I noticed coolant leaking out fromnt he bottom.\
[01:20:46] <PetefromTn_> We also managed to get all the proximity switches for the toolchanger hooked up and got the toolchanger motor working fwd and revers all integrated into the control.
[01:20:59] <R2E4_> Had to empty it, and have to weld it to fix the leaks....lol
[01:21:09] <PetefromTn_> LOL I had to do the same damn thing...
[01:21:53] <R2E4_> When I got the machine, they left the coolant tank full of coolant, for 2 years.
[01:22:10] <R2E4_> shut the machine off and didnt touch it for two years.
[01:22:24] <PetefromTn_> I actually wound up wire wheeling the troughs up and then tig welded the holes I could see and I then coated the entire inside of both of them with west system epoxy.
[01:22:26] <R2E4_> dumbasses.
[01:22:55] <R2E4_> oh yeah? get that on the web? Thats a good idea.
[01:23:06] <PetefromTn_> Then I repainted the troughs with an industrial immersion proof epoxy based paint.
[01:23:17] <CaptHindsight> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvixAF-h1YI scooter in a briefcase
[01:23:27] <R2E4_> I sould do that.
[01:23:40] <PetefromTn_> no I just did something similar to another coolant trough I had before.
[01:23:49] <R2E4_> What year is your machine?
[01:24:13] <PetefromTn_> yeah so far it is holding good with like 50 gallons in it and the epoxy will ensure no future holes go thru.
[01:24:19] <PetefromTn_> it is a 1997.
[01:24:22] <R2E4_> Mine is 1987. But was only used fopr small tooling.
[01:24:53] <R2E4_> I wonder if these machine retrofitted with LinuxCNC are worth anything, monetary speaking.
[01:24:57] <R2E4_> I would never sell it.
[01:25:17] <PetefromTn_> Honestly from what I have seen of these kinds of machines if they were taken care of at all they are gonna outlast the control easily.
[01:26:07] <PetefromTn_> I sure damn well hope so I expect once it is working well it will be worth a great deal of money I know it would be to me. Especially since once it is done anyone can fix it with off the shelf parts from various manufacturers.
[01:26:37] -!- FinboySlick [FinboySlick!~shark@squal.net] has joined #linuxcnc
[01:29:06] <dmz2> What kinda machine is it
[01:29:29] <PetefromTn_> dmz2 Whose?
[01:30:22] <dmz2> yours
[01:30:45] <PetefromTn_> it is a LinuxCNC retrofit 1997 Cincinatti Arrow 500 VMC
[01:33:48] <dmz2> Pretty neat machine
[01:34:10] <dmz2> Did you have to replace the servo drives
[01:34:34] <PetefromTn_> Yeah well actually I CHOSE to replace not only the servo drives but the motors and cables to them as well...
[01:34:58] <dmz2> What kinda motors did you use
[01:34:59] <PetefromTn_> I sold off all the original stuff and was able to buy all brand new ones.
[01:35:09] <PetefromTn_> Teco motors and drives.
[01:35:10] <R2E4_> I am not replacing my drives.
[01:35:36] <R2E4_> My spindle servo doesnt have encoder though.
[01:35:54] <R2E4_> BIg ass servo though, and the drive is a fanuc.
[01:36:19] <dmz2> I have an old Mill about that size with brush motors (fanuc)
[01:36:33] <PetefromTn_> what size?
[01:37:38] <dmz2> fanuc 5 and 10 I think
[01:37:57] <PetefromTn_> no I mean what size and kinda mill?
[01:38:13] <R2E4_> I would think if these machines are done well and working kgood, they should be worth quite a nbit.
[01:38:50] <PetefromTn_> I would think so. I know my machine now can run much longer code and runs 3d movement faster and smoother than it did stock.
[01:38:58] <dmz2> matsuura mc660 and mc1000
[01:39:59] <PetefromTn_> Hey those are some nice looking machines. What year?
[01:40:20] <dmz2> 1979 and 78
[01:40:41] <R2E4_> Those are cool. Dpoes it have the nice big control panel?
[01:41:01] <dmz2> old controls but I got one of them working
[01:41:07] <R2E4_> You could fit a touch screen on there and some buttons.
[01:41:47] <dmz2> The 1000 has a neat control panel that would be perfect fit that
[01:41:58] <dmz2> for
[01:42:21] <PetefromTn_> Trying to find a picture of what that looks like.
[01:42:29] -!- amiri has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[01:42:46] <andypugh> R2E4_: Negative PID gains are buggy with LinuxCNC. It's better to negate the encoder scale then the PID gain.
[01:42:52] <dmz2> It's the onewith the busted control too
[01:43:59] <R2E4_> andypugh: yeah, PCW was telling me that. Just havenbt figure out how to change the scale yet.
[01:44:00] <XXCoder> a cnc went unused for 2 years?
[01:44:01] <XXCoder> jeez
[01:44:40] <XXCoder> or was it just coolant parts that was left unused 2 years?
[01:44:56] <R2E4_> The machine was turned off for two years.
[01:45:06] <R2E4_> Hitachi Seiki VM-40
[01:45:30] <XXCoder> geez
[01:45:31] <andypugh> R2E4_: Well, if you change the encoder scale then the axis will run backwards, and you probably don't want that.
[01:45:32] <XXCoder> wonder why
[01:45:33] <PetefromTn_> apparently the controls are no longer supported on them.
[01:45:33] <R2E4_> battery went dead, and was downhill from there when I powered it up in my shop.
[01:45:38] <CaptHindsight> http://www.ebay.com/itm/141206350831 MILACRON ARROW 500
[01:45:43] <andypugh> What does the PID drive, is it a pwmgen?
[01:46:12] <R2E4_> 10v drives
[01:46:12] <andypugh> If it is a pwmgen, then make the pwm scale negative.
[01:46:30] <andypugh> (or swap the wires :-)
[01:46:35] <R2E4_> directly driven from the 7i77
[01:47:00] <R2E4_> pcw said in no lesser terms....DO NOT SWAP THE WIRES....
[01:47:06] <andypugh> :-)
[01:47:13] <PetefromTn_> CaptHindsight yup that's the same machine I have. that one looks kinda beat tho..
[01:47:25] <R2E4_> the scale analogout has to be changed to negative.
[01:47:31] <CaptHindsight> http://www.ebay.com/itm/331150700446 Cincinnati Milacrron 5VC-750
[01:47:45] <andypugh> Swap A and B on the encoder then.
[01:47:46] <dmz2> peter: Google image search matsuura mc1000 3000c the first pic
[01:47:52] <CaptHindsight> PetefromTn_: yeah, the price seems way too high for that one
[01:49:04] <andypugh> I don't know, it's a big lump of iron.
[01:49:05] <R2E4_> They are running in the right doirection, if I swap the encoders, it will just reverse where it thinks it is and go in the other direction, no?
[01:49:10] <PetefromTn_> http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cincinnati-Arrow-500-VMC-CNC-20-x34-X-20-Y-20-Z-22-6000RPM-10HP-2100-Acromatic-/281184869245?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4177ec9b7d
[01:50:04] <andypugh> R2E4_: Yes, you are right, if the encoders read the right way, then leave them alone. You need to reverse the motor somehow.
[01:50:35] <PetefromTn_> Okay that is kinda what I thought it looked like.
[01:51:01] <R2E4_> That cincinati looks in good shape
[01:51:21] <PetefromTn_> That's pretty much what mine looks like now...
[01:52:01] <R2E4_> andypugh: Thats what I thought.
[01:52:07] <pcw_home> R2E4 on 7I77 you change the sign of scalemax to reverse the feedback
[01:52:13] <PetefromTn_> wouldn't mind having that tooling plate on it LOL.
[01:52:58] <R2E4_> analogout0.scalemax
[01:53:25] <andypugh> What the heck? Cincinatti Milacrons were made in the UK then exported to the US?
[01:53:34] <PetefromTn_> LOL yup!
[01:53:56] <PetefromTn_> made in Birmingham england.
[01:54:08] <andypugh> I thought we stopped making anything at all in about 1960.
[01:54:18] <pcw_home> Yeah blah.blah.blah.analogoutn.scalemax
[01:54:20] <PetefromTn_> apparently not LOL..
[01:54:50] <sabotender> oh lordy
[01:55:17] <dmz2> I get to work on a 1994 jcb backhoe all the time.. Was made in england
[01:55:43] <dmz2> real fun to find parts for it
[01:55:51] <andypugh> Yeah, JCB are still very much active.
[01:56:12] <andypugh> You should be able to just buy parts from JCB.
[01:56:43] <andypugh> (I would quite like to work for JCB, I did briefly in the past, and they are based in a lovely part of the country)
[01:57:00] <dmz2> most of them. Some are outrageously priced tho
[01:58:07] <R2E4_> pcw just put a - after like 5i25.0.7i77.0.1.analogout0-scalemax -
[02:00:19] <R2E4_> Pete, what does your machine weigh?
[02:00:30] <R2E4_> 7000 lbs?
[02:00:33] <PetefromTn_> it is like around 7k..
[02:01:36] <dmz2> jcbs are perfect if you like paying $500 for simple parts like an alternator or throttle cable
[02:01:37] <R2E4_> What can you rapid at? 300?
[02:01:49] <PetefromTn_> about 700 IPM.
[02:02:02] <R2E4_> wow. cool
[02:02:29] <PetefromTn_> scary to me LOL>.. I keep the rapids turned down to maintain sanity.
[02:02:29] <andypugh> JCB fastTrac: The latest version of this gearbox a wet clutch replaced the dry clutch still with 54 forward and 18 reverse gears
[02:02:43] <PetefromTn_> Newer machine are more than twice that fast tho.
[02:04:20] <R2E4_> yeah, mine says it can do 600
[02:04:30] <dmz2> Andy prolly costs $50k to rebuild that tranny..
[02:04:36] <PetefromTn_> PLENTY...
[02:04:48] <PetefromTn_> what are your travels?
[02:04:51] <R2E4_> I wont ever see 600 on this machine.
[02:04:51] <XXCoder> IPM inches per minute?
[02:05:01] <PetefromTn_> yeah
[02:05:25] <dmz2> my old 1970s machines can do 400ipm
[02:05:30] <R2E4_> 16 Y, 24X, 16Z
[02:05:51] <R2E4_> yours has a 34 inch X I think
[02:06:01] <XXCoder> R2 why wasnt machine used for 2 years? I find it interesting that such a expensive machine was left alone 2+ years
[02:06:12] <PetefromTn_> actually it is 20x20x20
[02:06:16] <dmz2> That's plenty fast enough to wreck something up good
[02:06:17] <R2E4_> I bought it for 6,000.00
[02:06:54] <R2E4_> The guy made small tools for the sewing industry, and retired. He owned the building, and just shut everything down.
[02:07:03] <XXCoder> ahh
[02:07:07] <XXCoder> guess that makes sense
[02:07:41] <andypugh> Night all
[02:07:46] <R2E4_> I was bummed out when I got it in my shop, powered it up and it didnt work. lol
[02:07:48] <PetefromTn_> night andy.
[02:07:49] -!- andypugh has quit [Quit: andypugh]
[02:08:09] <PetefromTn_> I am sure you bought it and it was supposed to be working for $6k?
[02:08:50] <R2E4_> yes, he said it was working when he shut it down. IT powered up, but had parameter issues.
[02:09:25] <R2E4_> I knew him through a friend that has a machine shop, and he saw it working when he shut it down.
[02:09:59] <PetefromTn_> probably batteries died in it.
[02:10:08] <R2E4_> The battery was dead, so I thought I could input all the parameters, and get it working. I worked on it for a month, but then found a memopry board to be bad.
[02:10:11] -!- skunkworks [skunkworks!~chatzilla@str-broadband-ccmts-ws-26.dsl.airstreamcomm.net] has joined #linuxcnc
[02:11:41] <R2E4_> I'm happy now I didnt get it working.
[02:11:49] <R2E4_> LinuxCNC is going to be amazing on th=is machine
[02:13:21] <PetefromTn_> yeah man you should see my control panel now with the spindle speed and spindle load metering as well as the XYZ MPG buttons etc...
[02:13:42] <PetefromTn_> all on screen... adding stuff is relatively easy.
[02:13:48] <skunkworks> R2E4_: going better?
[02:14:44] <dmz2> pete: are you using mesa cards?
[02:14:53] <PetefromTn_> yeah man only way to fly...
[02:16:28] <PetefromTn_> Funny thing Is I was worried about having enough I/0 for the machine with the 5i25/7i77 but I got more than enough and I can addd two more axes if I need to.
[02:16:28] <R2E4_> skunkworks, yeah, I was off doing a run of bamboo urns 400 of them so I didnt have time to work on the machine, but I am backl on it.
[02:17:07] <R2E4_> The x andy are working. But I have to change the output of scalemax to - and trying to figure out how.
[02:17:49] <R2E4_> I think 5i25.0.7i77.0.1.analogout0-scalemax -10 would do it
[02:18:49] <R2E4_> Pete, I did a button box also
[02:19:51] <dmz2> I see a teco 750w motor and drive for about $900
[02:20:06] <PetefromTn_> yeah I only have a couple buttons right now i wanted to machine a nice panel from aluminum plate before I add more buttons to the control. I want to do a lot of stuff with an wired MPG.
[02:20:27] <PetefromTn_> dmz2 I bought 1kw 2000 RPM teco motors and drives..

[02:21:20] <PetefromTn_> Oh yeah that sounds nice...
[02:22:48] <PetefromTn_> I need to make one I have some ideas for it already. I need to get some nice buttons for it tho I got rid of all the old ones they were not that nice.
[02:23:03] <R2E4_> Going to do a small pvcyp panel for the axis gui
[02:23:38] <skunkworks> got to love hood. (never ever had any problems with mach - ever - always runs perfect.)
[02:23:44] <PetefromTn_> yeah that is what I have a bunch of buttons on now. Like I said earlier with spindle RPM and spindle load etc.
[02:23:53] <skunkworks> http://www.machsupport.com/forum/index.php/topic,26709.msg188958.html#msg188958

[02:29:55] -!- ries has quit [Quit: ries]
[02:35:14] <XXCoder> R2E4_: probably decau deom being unused so much
[02:35:30] <XXCoder> for example capactors usually blow after few years of zero charge
[02:35:37] <XXCoder> some ones anyway
[02:37:33] <R2E4_> yeah, thats what I figured.
[02:38:21] <R2E4_> They were asking 2500.00 for the memory board. I said suck eggs, just for the principal. And so I bought some mesa cards....lol
[02:38:42] <XXCoder> ow yeah not really worth that much money to repair it
[02:39:07] <XXCoder> hell $2,500 you can almost build 2'x3' cnc from a kits lol\
[02:44:40] <R2E4_> They are preying on the guys with the old machines needing boards. They jack the price cause they know you have no choice.
[02:45:22] <XXCoder> I guess its not being made anymore. so youre replacing controllers?
[02:46:03] <dmz2> That's why you just fix the board..
[02:46:39] <XXCoder> heh I'm glad I dont have to. I just plan to use a kit
[02:47:06] * XXCoder is not an engineer
[02:49:11] -!- mozmck has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[02:49:12] <R2E4_> I'm not fixing it. I ripped it out alonmg with all the copntroller stuff and put mesa cards and linuxcnc
[02:50:22] <R2E4_> OK, I'm stuck. I cannot find any docs on reversing the analogoutN-scalemax on a 7i77. GRRRR
[02:50:58] <R2E4_> easy to do in the ini file, but pcw dsaid dont dothat....lol

[02:52:32] <R2E4_> Pete: you cutting parts for moola npow?
[02:53:06] <XXCoder> wonder if it is possible to make drawer with cnc lol
[02:53:47] <PetefromTn_> whats moola npow?
[02:53:58] <XXCoder> money
[02:55:17] <PetefromTn_> yeah trying to.. Made some parts recently but now I am needing to machine some parts I designed for another customer.
[02:55:37] <pcw_home> R2E4_ if scalemax is setp'ed to 10, change it to -10. That's all there is to it
[02:55:38] <R2E4_> thats cool
[02:56:04] <PetefromTn_> I was hoping to have already made the part this week but have been doing a bunch of other stuff and working on the machine.
[02:59:23] <R2E4_> pcw: scalemax is setp to [axis_0] output_scale, so can I just change the output scale in the ini for the axis to -10? It is set to 10 now
[02:59:36] <pcw_home> Sure
[03:00:20] <R2E4_> lol, I've been racking my brain on this cause I thought you said to not do that....... hehe, thanks
[03:00:44] <R2E4_> btw, whats wrong with the negative P in the pid?
[03:00:57] <pcw_home> A bug
[03:01:38] -!- skorasaurus has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[03:01:42] <R2E4_> Ah....ook
[03:02:01] <XXCoder> what would this bug do
[03:02:10] <pcw_home> it will only show up if you have:
[03:02:11] <pcw_home> 1. a integral term and
[03:02:13] <pcw_home> 2. a integral limit
[03:02:15] <R2E4_> I dont want to find out.
[03:02:27] <pcw_home> cause a runaway...
[03:02:43] <pcw_home> (well ferror will catch)
[03:03:43] <pcw_home> negative P is ok it's the negative I that goes along with negative P that tickles the bug
[03:05:34] <pcw_home> It should be fairly easily fixable, just no one has bothered as you can always avoid negative PID parms some other way
[03:06:07] <PetefromTn_> pcw_home Hey man can I ask you a question about the spindle feedback setup we spoke about earlier?

[03:09:20] <XXCoder> sounds like simple math error
[03:13:53] <pcw_home> it is a math error with the integral limit (and a negative I term) and the way the integral term is bounded
[03:15:55] <XXCoder> hmm ok
[03:16:08] <XXCoder> man I need to refresh calculus lol
[03:16:39] <PetefromTn_> I gotta figure out the best way to use this 180 out mask sensor on the spindle feedback here soon. Tonight we got the last of the proximity sensors hooked up and working in the control.
[03:18:11] <PetefromTn_> not sure the best way to go about it we are considering using either a custom made board with like an and circuit or try to do it in the software so that the spindle 12k RPM motor and 6k RPM spindle max speeds work with the encoder on the spindle motor.
[03:19:35] <PetefromTn_> I am sure there are other ways to do it as well but trying to determine the best way to deal with the high speed of the motor.
[03:21:41] <pcw_home> The high speed should not be in issue (the spindle index need only work at relatively low speeds)
[03:22:20] <PetefromTn_> how would you do this then Pete?
[03:22:45] <pcw_home> I wonder if it can in fact all be done in HAL
[03:22:47] <PetefromTn_> I would prefer to KEEP the available encoder inputs on the 7i77 board somehow.
[03:23:53] <PetefromTn_> what would be nice is to be able to plug in the spindle encoder to the fifth encoder input and then put the 180 out sensor into an I/O input but what speed do you think that will work max at?
[03:25:29] <PetefromTn_> I mean I know we will only be indexing and rigid tapping at slower speeds much less than 1k most likely but the spindle speed feedback will need to work all the way to the top.
[03:26:27] <pcw_home> the 1 KHz servo thread ought to be fast enough at the max 6 KHz spindle speed (5mS on/5mS off)
[03:26:47] <pcw_home> for the index masking
[03:27:43] <PetefromTn_> what is the 1khz servo thread? is that the max input on the 7i77?
[03:28:00] <PetefromTn_> for the I/0 Inputs.
[03:28:15] <pcw_home> that is your current servo thread period (AFAIK)
[03:29:43] <pcw_home> how is the spindle mask sensed?
[03:29:45] <PetefromTn_> so the 12k rpm rate is what the index will be max at 6k spindle speed on a 500 line encoder how do you figure out what the frequency will be..
[03:30:15] <PetefromTn_> it uses a proximity sensor on a half moon metal cam attached to the spindle timing belt pulley.
[03:31:20] -!- lucashodge has quit [Quit: I am away now.]
[03:31:33] <pcw_home> OK so the encoder should be adjusted so the index happens in the middle of the prox's on or off part

[03:33:22] <pcw_home> because you want the best timing margin from a valid prox signal to the index
[03:34:20] <pcw_home> becuase the prox signal needs to always be valid before the index occurs
[03:35:08] <PetefromTn_> okay so if the prox signal is kinda slow it will have a chance to be right.
[03:37:01] <pcw_home> Yes, and further if the index masking logic is done in HAL another1 mS of timing is lost
[03:37:03] <pcw_home> (but at even 3K RPM or so spindle speed theres plenty of margin)
[03:37:41] <pcw_home> and you are unlikely to do tapping anywhere near that speed
[03:37:42] -!- Valen has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
[03:38:01] <PetefromTn_> yeah probably 500 or less at most.
[03:38:05] <pcw_home> (without a servo on the spindle)
[03:38:36] <PetefromTn_> well we are essentially turning the spindle motor into a servo right?
[03:40:43] -!- archivist_herron has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
[03:41:03] <pcw_home> Yes essentially but a VFD can't reverse as fast
[03:41:31] <PetefromTn_> maybe but this thing reverses pretty damn quick at reasonable RPM.
[03:42:04] -!- valeech has quit [Quit: valeech]
[03:42:49] <pcw_home> Yeah but servos are different (a good brushless servo can get to 3000 RPM in less than a turn)
[03:43:09] <toastyde1th> Tru fax
[03:43:16] <toastyde1th> watching a tap reverse at that speed is ridiculous
[03:43:38] <PetefromTn_> seems like you would tear the belts off at that much speed LOL.
[03:45:52] <pcw_home> So as far as the index mask goes, I think its possible all in HAL with the right kind of helper component
[03:46:10] <PetefromTn_> helper component?
[03:46:46] <PetefromTn_> I know you can setup and or kinda stuff in there we used one to make the power drawbar button disabled when the spindle is turning.
[03:47:45] <pcw_home> prox just goes to a 7I77 input and the index enable signal is masked in HAL with this logically before being fed to the encoder
[03:48:44] <pcw_home> the trick is re-constructing the index enable signal that motion sees
[03:50:33] <PetefromTn_> so the encoder is hooked to encoder 5 as normal and the prox goes to an input in the I/0 area of the 7i77 not another encoder input right... Then the rest is hal magic.
[03:50:55] -!- AR_ has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
[03:51:09] <pcw_home> That was my (possibly half baked) idea
[03:52:30] <PetefromTn_> what is the max rate that linuxCNC logic can handle any idea or is that the 1kw thing you talked about earlier?
[03:53:20] <pcw_home> I think 1 KHZ is probably about as fast as you can go with the motherboard you have
[03:53:22] -!- archivist_herron [archivist_herron!~herron@80.175.14.110] has joined #linuxcnc
[03:53:48] <pcw_home> but that is not a limitation for this kind of thing
[03:54:33] <PetefromTn_> I guess it would not hurt to try it out this way. I have a digital tachometer here I can check things with.
[03:56:00] <pcw_home> the other option is for me to make a 5i25 config with index mask 5 on P2
[03:56:01] <pcw_home> (say at GPIO16) and loop it back to say GPIO17 and then feed the prox signal to GPIO17 output
[03:57:00] <PetefromTn_> would that be more reliable?
[03:57:38] <pcw_home> or add the feature of a software index mask to the encoder part of the driver
[03:58:12] <PetefromTn_> or like Connor is saying just use an external board to mask the output of the encoder.
[03:58:34] <PetefromTn_> which driver?
[03:58:46] <pcw_home> the HostMot2 driver
[03:59:36] <PetefromTn_> for the 5i25?
[03:59:53] <pcw_home> its the same for all cards
[04:00:41] <PetefromTn_> BRB I gotta switch to my smartphone so I can shut this computer down. just a couple minutes.

[08:09:32] <MrSunshine> zultron, http://code.google.com/p/heekscnc/source/list there is sthe sources
[08:10:09] <zultron> Ah, r1448!
[08:11:35] <zultron> I'm not just a FOSS zealot, but as a professional, I need to know not only the cost of the license, but also that of ongoing support.
[08:12:38] <MrSunshine> ongoign support as in furture versions ? help ?
[08:13:42] <zultron> If the code is proprietary, and there's only one developer, a company can't reasonably invest in a software package ($10 is not the main investment) without being sure they'll get bug fixes, support, training, etc.
[08:14:20] <zultron> Nice thing about FOSS (from a zealot's perspective): Vendor independence. ;)
[08:15:02] <MrSunshine> training etc my guess is out of the picture for £10 :P im guessing he just wants tos crape together some bucks for what he is doing to be able to continue to do it =)
[08:15:12] <MrSunshine> as it has been totaly free up until now
[08:17:28] <zultron> I'm sure he's available for hire, but you don't see a consistent commitment to the software from him.
[08:17:35] <zultron> When was the last release?
[08:18:31] <zultron> Anyway, since the source *is* available, one could always hire a consultant to solve problems, so my initial fears are relieved. :)
[08:20:03] <archivist> stuff was bsd so you can do what you want anyway
[08:20:05] <zultron> Others' opinions seem to agree that HeeksCNC is the most advanced FOSS 3D CAM software out there.
[08:21:02] <zultron> There's still room for a community to form, but it hasn't, so my surprise continues.
[08:21:25] <archivist> well there was a community
[08:21:33] <MrSunshine> hmm G-wizard in all its glory but hell calculating stuff for engraving bits is a freakin PITA! :/
[08:21:51] <MrSunshine> it goes crazy with values to the extremes in either direction etc :/
[08:21:58] <archivist> you will find my nick on some commits for heekscad
[08:22:32] <zultron> Yes, there was. I attribute its dispersal to the OpenCASCADE license (recently fixed), and alleged personality conflicts.
[08:22:59] <zultron> Maybe there's new room?
[08:23:04] <archivist> also the way project was managed, too many cooks syndrome
[08:23:27] <archivist> and a few went oooo shiny to freecad
[08:23:30] <zultron> Ah. Ouch. Didn't know, and glad I wasn't involved. ;)
[08:23:53] <zultron> Heeks himself endorsed FreeCAD.
[08:23:57] <MrSunshine> i think freecad has more potential if the cam stuff gets developed more for it ... for one it doesnt crash every other click you do :P
[08:24:05] <MrSunshine> atleast last i used heeks it did that :P
[08:25:11] <archivist> taking out the constraints that someone produced is a bit dumb, why not fix them
[08:25:56] <zultron> The FreeCAD CAM plugin devs planned, last I read, to import wholesale the HeeksCNC preprocessor, said to be excellent software.
[08:26:46] <zultron> constraints?
[08:26:56] <archivist> I do the logging for freecad channel and heekscad channels :)
[08:27:40] <archivist> like a line 90 deg to another
[08:28:28] <zultron> Oh yeah, I see 'the_wench' over there. :)
[08:29:05] <zultron> You mean the, err, sketching workbench (it's been a while)?
[08:29:55] <zultron> I package FreeCAD for Fedora in the RPMFusion repo. Now that OpenCASCADE has finally allowed a reasonable license, we're in the process of moving those packages to Fedora.
[08:31:29] <zultron> But like LinuxCNC, I've spent far more time contributing to the code than actually using it. :-/

[14:35:19] <CaptHindsight> http://toomuchtodotoolittletime.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/aussie-mechmate-21.jpg is this a mechmate?
[14:35:36] <R2E4_> Thats a mechmate.
[14:35:38] <MattyMatt> I lost a lot of X when I got a used ballscrew on ebay. down to 13.5"
[14:36:13] <XXCoder> what you guys think of FLA http://www.finelineautomation.com/
[14:36:18] <MattyMatt> I love that ballscrew tho, it's way better than the M8 on the other axis
[14:36:41] <R2E4_> mechmates are really solid, but you have to be very accurate when building. Not alot of adjustments. Thats why I built mine with 8020 aluminum extrusions. I have alot of adjustments to tram it.
[14:38:38] -!- automata has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[14:38:49] <R2E4_> PetefromTn_: you using pins 16 and 17 on your 7i77 for mpg inputs?
[14:40:26] <PetefromTn_> yeah man I have the original MPG...sorry I was watching a video.
[14:40:29] <CaptHindsight> the i-beams are rigid but not very straight, you have to align all the linear bearings
[14:41:37] <PetefromTn_> you talking about the c channel that makes up the base surface?
[14:42:33] <PetefromTn_> My wife wants me to build one so we can make all kinds of wood stuff she has ideas on. I won't build another CNC unless it is large enough to do at least a half sheet of material or larger.
[14:42:48] <R2E4_> PetefromTn_: When you get a chance, can yopu get me the lines for setp those inputs? I am having difficulty getting that right. I got the scale and select ok
[14:43:25] <R2E4_> Here is my site that has alot of artsie wood stuff I did with my router. https://www.facebook.com/CncTechProduction
[14:43:57] <PetefromTn_> I think I am indeed using the pin 16 and 17 inputs for the MPG. works great.
[14:43:57] <R2E4_> dont go less than 4x8. I am shooting myself for onl;y building 4x44
[14:44:17] <PetefromTn_> that is what I figured... LOL Nice to just throw a sheet up there huh...
[14:44:27] <XXCoder> I bet
[14:44:33] <XXCoder> 4x44 ;)
[14:44:38] <PetefromTn_> most of those mechmates are 4x8 or larger I think...
[14:44:44] <R2E4_> 4X4
[14:44:54] <XXCoder> yeah assumed that, had to tease a bit
[14:45:29] <PetefromTn_> R2E4_ You mean the Hal lines for the MPG?
[14:45:32] <CaptHindsight> http://www.skf.com/group/products/maintenance-products/alignment-tools/shaft-alignment-tools/shaft-alignment-tool-tksa40/index.html anyone make a low cost version of these?
[14:45:33] <MattyMatt> I assumed 44 inch, which would be even more annoying
[14:45:34] <R2E4_> The other thing is save up for linear profile bearings. anything else is a pain
[14:45:38] <R2E4_> Pete: yeah
[14:46:43] <PetefromTn_> the mechmate does not use linear bearings it uses shop built rails and vee wheels with bearings I think./
[14:46:48] <R2E4_> 4x4 is not cutting either. I get more like 42X38, which is a more pain in the ass. 5X10 would get you in the ballp[ark for an all out badass router.
[14:46:59] <MattyMatt> round rails are much cheaper than square ones. I'm going for round supported next time
[14:47:37] <R2E4_> Mine isusing vee bearings, fully adjustable, but not as rigid as linear profiles.
[14:47:37] <XXCoder> whoa, large. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHHwdqTVo2w
[14:47:46] <PetefromTn_> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvYqViUjNMk
[14:49:15] <R2E4_> you dont even have to do that, the bearings are hard enough and with some breakin gcode it will place the rails.
[14:49:48] <R2E4_> IF you dont use the hardened vrails, and just use angle iron, you have to change them every couple of years cause they wear uneven
[14:49:49] <PetefromTn_> huh how?
[14:50:59] <R2E4_> HE is grinding the angle iron with a v on it. IF you dont do that, then the bearings riding on the rails, with the weight of the gantry cut into the rails and form ir for you.

[14:58:04] <R2E4_> yeah, I see that. They are nice machines.

[15:06:15] <PetefromTn_> the G540? is that not for smaller lower power motors?
[15:06:21] <XXCoder> so gecko g640 is supported thats good
[15:06:46] <R2E4_> yeah it is 3 stepper dirvers and BOB built in pone box. max 48volts
[15:06:48] <CaptHindsight> http://www.automationtechnologiesinc.com/products-page/bearing-block-rail/20mm-x-1000mm-supported-linear-shaft I still have to measure the straightness of these

[15:37:58] <PetefromTn_> no its a hook man.
[15:38:55] <zeeshan> yea i gotta move that hook
[15:39:17] <R2E4_> its too high
[15:39:21] <XXCoder> oh lol
[15:39:25] <XXCoder> looked closer
[15:39:30] <XXCoder> wire just goes down
[15:39:35] <XXCoder> great illusion lol
[15:42:32] <zeeshan> XXCoder: help me clean the wires up!
[15:42:38] <zeeshan> i really dont like how 2 of the wires run
[15:43:38] <XXCoder> naybe wall wire holders? theres ones that you can easily add or remove wires from
[15:43:49] <R2E4_> zeeshan: clean up the 120v powerbar wires?
[15:44:18] <zeeshan> R2E4_: yes the main one powering the powerbar and the one going to the small drill press
[15:44:23] <zeeshan> PetefromTn_: http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p252/turbozee84/booth-1.jpg
[15:44:27] <R2E4_> lower the powerbar 14" off the floor, install it vertically.
[15:44:44] <zeeshan> R2E4_: cant i hate getting chips/dust in there
[15:44:51] <XXCoder> cover it
[15:44:53] <zeeshan> i killed my last power supply with grinding dust ;p
[15:45:09] <XXCoder> theres covers you can add that protect but easily flips up to plug in and closes
[15:45:25] <zeeshan> i tried spraying basecoat/clearcoat at home
[15:45:28] <zeeshan> but it was still too dusty
[15:45:34] <zeeshan> so i rented a booth for a day
[15:45:42] <XXCoder> has foam to block dust from coming in from wires

[15:47:46] <zeeshan> thats how it turned out without any buffing
[15:47:46] <XXCoder> zee I bet you can easily build cover, expecially if you has cnc lol
[15:47:58] <XXCoder> damn smooth paint
[15:48:08] <zeeshan> http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p252/turbozee84/844BF95F-0BAE-4A06-8CB2-19641E920493-768-0000002B25C6591A_zps2c7f312a.jpg
[15:48:10] <zeeshan> thats after buffing
[15:48:15] <zeeshan> it gets rid of all the orange peel
[15:48:36] <PetefromTn_> I say build a table to mount belt sander and small drill press on, then install power strip underneath table edge to protect it.
[15:48:57] <zeeshan> PetefromTn_: im lazy
[15:48:58] <zeeshan> lol
[15:49:20] <zeeshan> im suprised none of you guys suggested zip tieing all the wires together
[15:49:27] <zeeshan> and putting them trough metal hooks
[15:49:36] <XXCoder> actually I said it
[15:49:38] <XXCoder> maybe too vague
[15:49:48] <XXCoder> theres wall mountable zip tie thing

[15:51:03] <PetefromTn_> how come you don't have outlets along that wall to plug shit into..?
[15:51:05] <Swapper_> whats the easiest way to see the encoder pulses from a 7i77 in linuxcnc ?
[15:51:12] <zeeshan> PetefromTn_: no idea

[15:51:27] <zeeshan> interesting
[15:51:27] <PetefromTn_> hal watch?
[15:51:39] <Swapper_> im in hal meter
[15:51:48] <XXCoder> that ones new to me too. looks like drywall version
[15:53:03] <PetefromTn_> You should just run a new line thru that wall and install some new outlets instead of screwing around with funky cables and hooks... you don't even have to remove the drywall if you cut a few holes and then patch them up.
[15:53:17] <archivist> Swapper_, halscope
[15:53:26] <zeeshan> PetefromTn_:
[15:53:27] <zeeshan> lol
[15:53:30] <zeeshan> i'm not doing that
[15:53:33] <PetefromTn_> you can easily see the studs..

[15:55:55] <XXCoder> stop looking at it lol
[15:56:04] <zeeshan> but i did like pete's idea for a table
[15:56:10] <zeeshan> im tired of hunching down for the mini drill press
[15:56:15] <zeeshan> i only use that guy for counterboring
[15:56:31] <zeeshan> or very tiny holes cause it can go upto 7000 rpm
[15:58:07] <R2E4_> thanks Pete
[15:59:01] <Swapper_> archivist: im selecting the hm2_5i25.0.encoder.02.rawcounts
[15:59:08] <Swapper_> should that not give numers ?
[15:59:32] <archivist> probably yes
[16:00:04] <archivist> you asked to see pulses though
[16:00:39] <Swapper_> ok, only need to see if the servoamp is sending quaderature signals

[16:06:37] <PetefromTn_> setp hm2_5i15.0.encoder.04.counter-mode true
[16:06:52] <PetefromTn_> then it has mpg signals

[16:55:17] <MrSunshine> R2E4_, exactly!
[16:55:34] <MrSunshine> but what kind of mask ? ... as i would think something that has glue etc would build up alot of crud on the cutters ?

[16:57:42] <PetefromTn_> huh maybe there is a conflict with that card like you said. PCW to the rescue LOL...
[17:00:52] <R2E4_> MrSunshine: use gerber or avery paint mask. Vinyl is the best. With sharp cutters you get good cut oin vinyl. Then seal the vcarve. then paint. POaint surface first. Make sure you put the mask and use roller on it.

[18:20:46] <XXCoder> oh found some. http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/190515502194?lpid=82
[18:20:50] <XXCoder> nema 11
[18:21:05] <PetefromTn_> huh that is some interesting power setup there man... Sometimes you gotta work with what you got right.
[18:21:46] <R2E4_> hehe, yeah. It would be better if I put a 220 to 120 transfo in there.
[18:21:51] <PetefromTn_> my damn LED edgefinder does not seem to like aluminum for some reason..

[18:24:00] <IchGuckLive> XXCoder: i use a simple DVD drive laser to cut on my CNC
[18:24:05] <R2E4_> huh? Aluminum conducts
[18:24:46] <XXCoder> Ich yeah checking for nema 11 controllers setup, might change mind to smallish laser cutter to get teeth cut before making big-ish cnc
[18:25:12] <PetefromTn_> yeah I know but it does not work on aluminum for some reason. I touch my vise body and it works fine, I touch a 123 block to the ball and the shank and it works fine I try to touch off on a chunka aluminum in my vise and nothing.

[18:28:57] <PetefromTn_> Go figure... It might need batteries but worst part Is If I take the body out of the cat40 holder I will lose my Zero tool offset and it is a bitch to get back... I am not sure in linuxCNC if the zero tool I am using to locate my work needs to be at G59.3 zero or if it can be whatever offset and the rest are relative to it either way.
[18:29:41] <PetefromTn_> I mean numberically Z zero for tool one.
[18:29:47] <XXCoder> Ich thats cool. looks like cnc adopted into laser cutter
[18:30:02] <IchGuckLive> yep

[18:30:58] <PetefromTn_> I suppose it does not matter because as long as the tool is touched off the same way as the rest of the tools even if the offset is not numerically zero when I touch off with my touch off tool 1 to the workpiece I should still be fine for the rest of the tools right?
[18:31:34] <IchGuckLive> PetefromTn_: G43 Hxx

[18:32:53] <IchGuckLive> PetefromTn_: you are wright with your guess but you need to tell in Gcode the ofset
[18:32:57] <PetefromTn_> so if I am understanding say I don't use my tool 1 to touch off to the work and I have say tool six in there. I touch off to the work and then load the first tool is say tool five it will still have the right offset assuming they were all setup on the 123 block off the table like I have been doing.
[18:33:07] <IchGuckLive> loading the tool does not give you the ofset
[18:33:46] <IchGuckLive> G41/42 is side ofset and G43 is Z ofset
[18:33:54] <PetefromTn_> when I say load tool I mean go into MDI and type Txx M6 G43 Hxx..

Just insert tools atop a 123 block as a work piece and see what happens.

[23:16:12] <R2E4_> evening.... to modt
[23:16:14] <R2E4_> most
[23:16:38] <PetefromTn_> evening..
[23:18:32] <PetefromTn_> Frackin' just had my first crash on the VMC.....ARRGHHHH.
[23:20:33] <Swapper_> auch, was it bad?
[23:20:46] <PetefromTn_> Well ANY crash is bad of course...
[23:21:10] <Swapper_> eya ofc, but they can be more or less costly
[23:21:27] <PetefromTn_> But it only cost me a 3/8 inch four flute carbide endmill, kinda damaged my ER32 collet in the process.
[23:22:02] <Swapper_> ok bummer, was it human error or somting bugged ?
[23:23:16] <PetefromTn_> I screwed up in the peel milling operation I needed to have more toolpath width around the perimeter and I THOUGHT I cut the material to length because it was already cut near my length but I forgot so when it turned the corner to go around the rectangle it basically went straight into the edge full depth slotting and loaded up real quick before I could hit the Oh shit button.
[23:23:52] <R2E4_> you have an oh shit button?
[23:24:06] <R2E4_> 4in addition to the emergency stop buttons?
[23:24:14] <XXCoder> its larger, and brown
[23:24:26] <PetefromTn_> learned something else too when the Estop was tripped the spindle did not stop it coasted to a stop so it took some time for it to actually stop even tho there was no power there.
[23:24:41] <R2E4_> sorry man. That sucks. Hope theres not big damage.
[23:24:56] <R2E4_> dynamic braking...
[23:25:06] <Swapper_> what kind of spindle drive do you have?
[23:25:20] <Swapper_> you can have different types of e-stop levels 1-2-3
[23:25:29] -!- The_Ball [The_Ball!~ballen@202.10.92.134] has joined #linuxcnc
[23:25:38] <R2E4_> oh great, and where is that dopcumented?
[23:26:04] <zeeshan> anyone here deal with a teledyne gurley dro ?
[23:26:30] <Swapper_> is more general e-stop documentation, the big thing is to read up on the drives features. Like DC injection breaking or controlled stop (servos)
[23:26:32] <andypugh> 5am start tomorrow, so time to log.
[23:26:41] -!- andypugh has quit [Quit: andypugh]
[23:27:05] <Swapper_> Then the servodrives/vfd takes the spindle/axis to a stop with "force"
[23:27:25] <Swapper_> PetefromTn_ seems to have "coast to stop" on his drive.
[23:27:36] <PetefromTn_> I don't think so the cutter snapped and the only reason it was not uneventful was because the cutter body kinda tweaked into the collet and ground against the ER32 collet until it stopped. I was able to put the holder into the lathe with the broken stub in there and used my high speed pencil grinder to clean up the face of the collet so I can use it more. Checked the runout with a new tool in there and it was like .0002
[23:27:38] <R2E4_> So the drive has to have this feature.
[23:28:26] <PetefromTn_> My drive does have this feature but we just switched to Modbus control and I am not sure if that changed anything. I will have to look into the manual to see how to change it to dynamic brake stop.
[23:28:39] <PetefromTn_> The drive is the Hitachi WJ200-110LF.
[23:28:59] <R2E4_> Pete, do you have a go to zero button, I am trying to find in the docs. I want to hit a button and have the x and y go to zero.
[23:29:30] <Swapper_> R2E4_: yea the drive needs to have the feature and the e-stop chain cant cut power to the motors in the same way.
[23:29:35] <PetefromTn_> honestly no I do not think I would ever use that. If I need to go to zero I just do an MDI G54 G0 X0 Y0...

[23:30:29] <R2E4_> Thats th point, not to have to tyupe in the gcode. just hit the button and have it run that command
[23:30:41] <Swapper_> time to sleep! cu all.
[23:30:49] <R2E4_> nite
[23:30:58] <PetefromTn_> Connor and I were talking about adding some non- active DRO's to the Glade VCP panel so you can set zero for edgefinding etc and be able to set a DRO to zero and move the axis and then touch off the actual axis..
[23:31:03] <PetefromTn_> Cya Swapper.
[23:31:10] <XXCoder> just had a random thought - is conercate harder to mill than alum?
[23:31:38] <PetefromTn_> R2E4_ That is doable just need to have it load some code snippet and link it to a Glade VCP button..
[23:32:56] <PetefromTn_> R2E4_ I think you will find that LinuxCNC is quite flexible and can be made to do all sorts of shit just need to know how and where to put it....
[23:33:12] <PetefromTn_> I am a noob in this field but the guys here know a lot more about it than I do.
[23:33:13] <R2E4_> Thats what Tom said but.... I'm not running glade and I cannot find the docs on it.

[23:38:14] <PetefromTn_> you can do a Terminal search in linuxCNC for glade and if it is not there that first link should tell you how to install it. If you have the latest version like I do it is probably already there.
[23:40:52] <R2E4_> http://www.linuxcnc.org/index.php/english/forum/21-axis/24219-axis-switch-from-mdi-to-manual-mode-and-back
[23:40:58] <R2E4_> Who would have thunk it....
[23:41:03] <R2E4_> needs a patch.
[23:42:15] <PetefromTn_> don't understand..
[23:44:24] <PetefromTn_> If you are needing to switch from MDI mode to manual mode you can do that by simply pressing f3 on the keyboard and then you are in manual mode and I think f5 puts you in MDI mode so if you have an elaborate MPG just hit that button before you stroll over to the table with it to put it in manual mode..
[23:45:59] <PetefromTn_> He also listed a patch you can install on the bottom of page 1 of that thread to do that apparently. Never tested it never needed it.
[23:48:12] <R2E4_> Yeah, I [put a button on my control panel label;ed go to zero. I thought I was just able to give it the mdi code and when you press the button it would run it.

[23:49:05] <PetefromTn_> a physical button or a gladeVCP button?
[23:49:07] <R2E4_> I guess I can hit F5 before I hit the buitton
[23:49:13] <R2E4_> physical button
[23:49:26] <PetefromTn_> is the button setup in hal?
[23:49:41] <R2E4_> Theres got to bea way to do it.
[23:49:51] <R2E4_> Yes, I can see it change states also.
[23:51:20] <PetefromTn_> I am sure you can link keyboard keystroke to a physical button I would have to lookup how to do it..
[23:57:20] <R2E4_> physical button to execute G28 as a MDI command.
[23:57:27] <R2E4_> Thats from JT
[23:58:58] <PetefromTn_> yeah but that is for G28 which for me is machine coordinates home position.
[23:59:16] <PetefromTn_> You are wanting to go to say G54 home I thought?
