[02:05:02] <zeeshan> jdh
[02:05:06] <zeeshan> lets see who can finish their lathe first
[02:05:07] <zeeshan> :-)
[02:05:10] <zeeshan> competition time!
[02:05:35] <PetefromTn_> My money is on JDH LOL..
[02:05:56] <zeeshan> jdh hasn't done his x axis
[02:05:58] <zeeshan> in years!
[02:06:29] <PetefromTn_> yeah well..
[02:06:31] <jdh> I picked up another 7x the other day. I might do it first.
[02:06:37] <zeeshan> 7x?
[02:06:49] <PetefromTn_> another how many do you have now?
[02:07:10] <jdh> a 9x20, 2 7x12, one clisby
[02:07:18] <PetefromTn_> all CNC?
[02:07:19] <zeeshan> why do you have so many lathes
[02:07:25] <jdh> none cnc
[02:07:29] <zeeshan> ^
[02:07:30] <zeeshan> why!
[02:07:35] <jdh> I like to buy things
[02:07:36] <zeeshan> jdh has a lathe fetish
[02:07:48] <jdh> I'd trade them all for a real lathe
[02:08:08] <zeeshan> =)
[02:08:24] <jdh> http://tinyurl.com/obmorvh
[02:08:31] <PetefromTn_> When I sell my asian to buy that nice commercial CNC lathe you can but it from me..
[02:08:46] -!- Servos4ever has quit [Ping timeout: 265 seconds]
[02:08:48] <PetefromTn_> aw how cute...
[02:08:50] <zeeshan> you guys are too hardcore
[02:08:54] <zeeshan> with your big machinery
[02:09:01] <zeeshan> you arent hobbyists!
[02:09:07] <PetefromTn_> who me?
[02:09:11] <zeeshan> yes especially you
[02:09:15] <zeeshan> mr i need a CHNC
[02:09:20] <PetefromTn_> never claimed to be a hobbyist..
[02:09:33] <zeeshan> people like me can do a manual tool change :P
[02:09:42] <zeeshan> i don't need an ATC!
[02:09:47] <PetefromTn_> I'm doin them now...LOL
[02:09:52] <zeeshan> haha damn
[02:10:06] <zeeshan> don't have the mesa card hooked up for tool change i/o?
[02:10:12] <davef> Hey guys, when I go to www.linuxcnc.org, it's all in Italian, can't see any way to set it to display in English.. Whats up /w this?
[02:10:14] <PetefromTn_> some of it not all...
[02:10:19] <zeeshan> davef
[02:10:24] <zeeshan> bottom left corner
[02:10:26] <zeeshan> click english
[02:10:44] <PetefromTn_> it's better in Italian..
[02:10:58] <PetefromTn_> ;)
[02:11:02] <zeeshan> PetefromTn_: so i heard back about the matsuura
[02:11:07] <zeeshan> they want $10k for it
[02:11:07] <zeeshan> rofl
[02:11:10] <davef> Oh, thanks. Did the default lang change or somethin? yesterday it displayed in english...
[02:11:10] <PetefromTn_> what matsuura?
[02:11:14] <zeeshan> 510v2
[02:11:31] <PetefromTn_> that's way too much does it run good?
[02:11:54] <davef> anyway, that worked, thx
[02:13:01] <PetefromTn_> They are supposed to be real nice machines tho but the 500 has smallish travels.
[02:13:08] -!- qingpei has quit [Quit: qingpei]
[02:14:28] <zeeshan> PetefromTn_: apparently
[02:14:32] <zeeshan> im not paying 10k for a 5k machine
[02:15:01] <zeeshan> with the way things are looking
[02:15:06] <zeeshan> i'm prolly gonna convert the first mill
[02:15:06] <zeeshan> :P
[02:16:03] <zeeshan> davef that website changes lanugages on me for some reason too
[02:16:15] <PetefromTn_> like I said if you are not gonna go for making money just do that..
[02:16:26] <zeeshan> yea
[02:16:29] <zeeshan> its for my personal projects
[02:16:35] <zeeshan> and once in a while doing stuff for someone else
[02:17:00] <zeeshan> i just looked at jdh's 7x12 carefully
[02:17:06] <zeeshan> i was expecting 7" x 12 feet
[02:17:17] <zeeshan> er
[02:17:19] <zeeshan> 7x12"
[02:17:24] <zeeshan> but it looks so tiny.
[02:17:53] <zeeshan> jdh: how much does that weigh?
[02:18:09] <jdh> 50lbs? 60 maybe?
[02:18:18] <PetefromTn_> LOL yeah a 7x12 is a mini lathe 7 INCHES...
[02:18:28] <zeeshan> you thought x axis was a bitch on the bigger lathe
[02:18:32] <zeeshan> imagine doing the x on this one
[02:18:32] <zeeshan> haha
[02:18:42] <jdh> I'll use the existing screw/nut
[02:19:03] <zeeshan> is that a rocker switch under the headstock
[02:19:11] <zeeshan> that's frigging bigger than your z lead screw
[02:19:13] -!- c-bob|| has quit [Read error: Operation timed out]
[02:20:02] <humble_sea_bass> i want a god damn lathe, a massive one
[02:20:07] <zeeshan> get a monarch
[02:20:13] <zeeshan> they are bad ass
[02:20:16] <Connor> zeeshan: I have a 7x10! :)
[02:20:32] <zeeshan> connor to make beads for your hair??!
[02:20:39] <zeeshan> tiny
[02:20:46] <humble_sea_bass> i want to make hair beads too
[02:21:37] <zeeshan> i think my burgers are on fire

[02:24:08] <PetefromTn_> humble_sea_bass You and me both only a slant bed CNC..
[02:25:51] <zeeshan> whats so special about a slant bed
[02:25:53] <zeeshan> i never understood that
[02:26:20] <humble_sea_bass> all sorts of sneaky angles are revealed
[02:26:43] <PetefromTn_> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7V57_7H9zw
[02:26:55] <zeeshan> internet says
[02:27:15] <zeeshan> theyre not as rigid as a straight bed
[02:27:34] <PetefromTn_> For one your chips fall away from the part and out of the way of the work and movements.
[02:27:35] <zeeshan> but you get a longer x travel for a smaller footprint
[02:27:38] -!- Groguard has quit [Quit: ZNC - http://znc.in]
[02:27:51] <zeeshan> yea but you can easily use coolant to move the chips
[02:28:02] <PetefromTn_> the same reason a Horizontal machining center is really cool over a vertical.

[02:32:53] <PetefromTn_> If I was gonna do a flatbed lathe I would do either a horizontal tool carousel or a gang tool setup most likely.
[02:35:10] <zeeshan> example of gang tool setup?
[02:35:10] <zeeshan> :D
[02:35:37] <jdh> 3 bloods, with shivs
[02:35:46] <zeeshan> lol
[02:35:52] <jdh> and 5 crips with an old revolver

[02:36:38] <jdh> I just got the other 7x because it was kind of cheap
[02:36:56] <zeeshan> how much did it cost
[02:37:00] <jdh> and a friend was looking for one. If he doesn't want it, I'll see about using the stock screws
[02:37:04] <jdh> $150
[02:37:23] <zeeshan> that is cheap :D

[02:39:22] <zeeshan> wow
[02:39:24] <zeeshan> that looks so rigid
[02:39:35] <zeeshan> and a lot easier to build
[02:40:02] <humble_sea_bass> don't make mistakes
[02:40:07] <humble_sea_bass> is the answer
[02:40:15] <zeeshan> i dont understand why that has 3 coolant nozzles :p
[02:40:24] <zeeshan> coulda kept the hose off the head stock

[02:41:20] <PetefromTn_> Really a horizontal changer setup with a parting off tool rigid mounted would be nice.
[02:41:48] <zeeshan> wait
[02:41:48] <zeeshan> wtf
[02:41:57] <zeeshan> that huge block is attached to a quick change tool post?

[02:43:20] <zeeshan> thanks for posting that

[06:09:29] <Keknom> Is a bridgeport CNC conversion without changing the lead screws worthwhile? (I have 3 brushed servos, and 3 brushed servo amplifiers I got for free, and access to a smaller CNC mill)
[06:13:57] <CaptHindsight> depends on how long you want it to last, how fast it will go and what shape the current screws are in
[06:14:50] <Keknom> Current screws I have not looked at yet, but mill itself is 8 years old, speed wise I do not care if it goes rapidly.
[06:14:50] -!- postaL [postaL!~postaL@c-50-131-18-140.hsd1.ca.comcast.net] has joined #linuxcnc
[06:14:56] <postaL> anyone else here use cambam?
[06:15:10] <Keknom> I use it for the smaller CNC I have access to
[06:15:41] <Keknom> and would the CNC conversion put more ware on the machine than when its being used manually?
[06:16:19] <Keknom> also the machine in question is a MVM9903
[06:16:19] <Keknom> http://mvmtools.com/mills/mvm9903_mill
[06:16:26] <CaptHindsight> wear is wear, if the screws are moving there is wear
[06:17:06] <CaptHindsight> ware is ware as well
[06:17:25] <Keknom> This mod is mostly tempting due to potentially all I need to purcahse being belts, timing pulley stock, and a CNC controller that would interface with the servo amplifiers
[06:19:26] <CaptHindsight> ballscrews spread the wear more than an acmescrew
[06:20:10] <CaptHindsight> the recirculating balls have more surface area
[06:21:18] <CaptHindsight> you can cnc a leadscrew but just plan on replacing it more often
[06:22:00] <Keknom> ah, would tolerances just be iffy?, or would it not be able to reliably cut circles if lead screw is left in long term?
[06:22:07] <CaptHindsight> but if you use it a few hours a week it will last for years
[06:22:34] <CaptHindsight> depends on the anti-lash nut used
[06:23:19] <CaptHindsight> polymer nuts can be replaced cheaply
[06:24:02] <CaptHindsight> http://www.haydonkerk.com/LinearActuatorProducts/LeadScrewsAndNuts/Nuts/tabid/109/Default.aspx
[06:24:04] <Keknom> also as is it is used probably 1 hour a day at most.. , and probably similar hours would be used unless usage bumps up (is in a robotics club student run machine room)
[06:24:18] <CaptHindsight> http://www.dumpstercnc.com/
[06:24:39] <Keknom> Already seen the dumpster CNC site, how good are their's?
[06:24:59] <CaptHindsight> I use them on light load applications
[06:25:13] <CaptHindsight> 1/2" 10 tpi acme
[06:26:07] <CaptHindsight> http://www.dumpstercnc.com/acme_12101.html
[06:27:24] <Keknom> May go that route then, unless I can find acceptable ball screw for 500-600 USD

[06:29:43] <Keknom> Is doable then, also read on a few forums, manual machining with ball screws is irritating due to needing to lock each axis, but some others claimed friction/resistance from servos and pulley set up should be enough to not need to lock axi

[15:00:26] <CHNCguy> How did you get the tool changer to work? Was it logic?
[15:00:38] <PetefromTn_> You can certainly do that but when I got my machine the Z drive was blown and I paid to fix it then the Y drive went like a month later. Repairs with warrantee was like a grand or more.
[15:01:04] <CHNCguy> dang, might just sell all the old drives and motors and get new ones...

[15:02:16] <CHNCguy> ahhh ya thats the tricky part
[15:02:23] <PetefromTn_> That is what I am using and I do not think I will need more at this point. Besides adding another daughter card is easy.
[15:02:42] <PetefromTn_> Yeah I know. Switching the spindle drive to modbus control currently working on that.
[15:03:13] <CHNCguy> true but what concerns me is all the hal logic and hal files....know anyone that could step by step me through it? I am willing to pay for phone support
[15:03:59] <PetefromTn_> CHNCguy Honestly man you are in the right place right here.. These guys know this stuff better than anyone I have seen anywhere.
[15:04:23] <PetefromTn_> I would be happy to help you when I can but from the sounds of it you have more experience than I do...
[15:05:13] <PetefromTn_> The Hal is just Hardware Abstract Layer and is where you setup all the inputs and outputs. There are several ways to accomplish the toolchanger logic including classic ladder and others.
[15:05:36] <CHNCguy> got a link to an example classic ladder and how to set one up?
[15:05:57] <PetefromTn_> There are also examples of already completed setups in the software you can look at and even run in simulation to see how it works.
[15:06:22] <CHNCguy> where would they be?
[15:06:28] <PetefromTn_> http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/ladder/classic_ladder.html
[15:06:38] <PetefromTn_> Those examples are actually in linuxCNC..
[15:07:03] <PetefromTn_> When you download the disk installer they are included in there and you can look at them without even having a machine.
[15:07:47] <PetefromTn_> Like I said I have not gotten that far yet so I am of little help with the setup but many folks say it is not all that difficult.
[15:08:25] <PetefromTn_> Nice thing about LinuxCNC is that you have the IRC for asking questions on as well as anything you can think of just do a google search and someone has probably done it before..
[15:08:27] <CHNCguy> I appreciate your help ;)
[15:08:41] <PetefromTn_> Sure man dunno how much help I was but anytime.
[15:09:19] <PetefromTn_> Honestly I would love to talk to someone who has a Cincinatti like mine about doing the toolchanger it would be nice to collaborate on it because that is the most complex part for me.
[15:10:00] <PetefromTn_> There is another fellow who has an Arrow 500 names Les who lives in England. He has his working altho he did it kinda differently.

[18:19:04] <Connor> make a vacuum plate.. drill bunch of holes in the pocket area.. all the way through.. mill out a 2nd plate as a chamber.. glue together.. seal the sides... and draw a vacuum.
[18:20:12] <marmite> good idea indeed

[19:24:46] <PetefromTn_> You do not need a clamp with vacuum unless you intend to perforate the board which will cause loss of suction. Honestly even if you do and you can capture the board inside the pocket drilling last will not be a problem as the cutting forces will be straight down.

[21:35:09] <PetefromTn_> Then I gotta rotate it over along the Y axis and machine some sacrificial jaws that are wide enough to accept the distance between the bottom dovetail and the round end piece.
[21:35:37] <humble_sea_bass> I don't mignle with the "makers" movement here. I usually want to kill everyone with all their optimism
[21:35:39] <PetefromTn_> humble_sea_bass Sorry man just a cnc vise, a three jaw in the mill, and a large angle plate.
[21:35:58] <humble_sea_bass> 3rd Ward used to have good facilities, but they went belly up a few months ago
[21:36:31] <CaptHindsight> humble_sea_bass: same here, I just thought it might be a place drill and mill vs the hotel room :)
[21:37:18] <humble_sea_bass> I still use my old colleges machine shop on weekends if I have something that doesn't fit at home

[21:38:12] <humble_sea_bass> pete. a tooling plate and some cams would make this part go a lot smoother
[21:38:36] <Connor> PetefromTn_: How many of those you have to make ?
[21:38:55] <PetefromTn_> Just a prototype at first but I need to make a few to make any money on it.
[21:39:40] <humble_sea_bass> pete i'm gonna change yourr life
[21:39:42] <Connor> Hmm.. You could make a custom tool pate that goes in your vise..

[21:39:48] <PetefromTn_> Material for the soft jaws and the parts will be maybe $60.00 or so. Have not sold too many of those wheels yet so things are really tight here.
[21:40:25] <PetefromTn_> humble_sea_bass Thanks I am very familiar with miteebite stuff. How is this gonna change my life?
[21:40:50] <humble_sea_bass> well, the commission i make will change mine i guess

[21:52:33] <PetefromTn_> I find that the custom stuff like this is difficult to do because everyone has thier own idea about what they think it should look like and making a batch of them it needs to be something that looks nice that MOST people will want.
[21:53:04] <PetefromTn_> I really thought those wheels looked killer but like I said so far not much sales..
