[00:05:42] <Mr_Mayhem> Heh, I had the same question for an open collector output on my VFD. (Not an input) It does not source current; it sinks, so I had to put field voltage to pull it up, so I used a 10k resistor to be sure not to fry something when it shunts to ground when on. The signal is spindle-at-speed output from VFD.

[03:01:16] <archivist> Valen, well past my bedtime !
[03:01:23] <Mr_Mayhem> CNCguy: I have not looked at those lathe features yet, looks like they are the kind of features that make use of encoder closed loop design.
[03:01:46] -!- GuShH_Lap has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[03:02:05] <ries> Mr_Mayhem: they look very nice
[03:02:34] <Valen> we were after some clock gears in brass, and i figured, hey i know a guy who does that exact thing!
[03:03:03] <Mr_Mayhem> Hey archivist, you said earlier that steppers are not the future, you got me wondering what other ideas are floating around for future motion control.
[03:03:16] <Valen> SERVO!
[03:03:21] <archivist> servos
[03:03:24] <Valen> or linear motors if your keen ;->
[03:03:31] <Valen> (cyclical tech right?)
[03:03:54] <ries> steppers if you need something cheap, unless servo's become affordable :D
[03:04:03] <Valen> they are coming down
[03:04:23] <Valen> you can get 750W AC servos with drives for like $400 or so an axis as i recall
[03:04:50] <Connor> One thing about servos.. is tuning the PID and Closed loop
[03:05:15] <Valen> so archivist, want to make me some gears? ;->
[03:05:27] <Valen> big chunky ones
[03:05:31] <ries> I tend to see if you go pro, take servo... lot's of hobbyiests or some wood working type machines can get away with steppers..
[03:05:46] <Valen> 1.2mm brass up to 60-80mm dia
[03:05:50] -!- lyzidiamond has quit [Quit: lyzidiamond]
[03:06:17] <Connor> Steppers have their place.
[03:06:19] <archivist> Valen, mebe but you have the technology too and there is postage
[03:06:42] <Valen> to do it properly we would need 4th axis,
[03:07:18] <ries> night
[03:07:39] <Valen> I mean we can do it, but you already do do it ;->
[03:07:48] <archivist> bit thin for that diameter
[03:08:27] <Valen> yeah, that is a concern
[03:08:53] <Valen> but we do already have brass in that size which was the reasoning behind that ;->
[03:08:55] -!- terabyte- has quit [Quit: terabyte-]
[03:09:00] <archivist> I have seen some warping after cutting
[03:09:04] <Connor> Wouldn't it be better to make the gear thicker then face it down to 1.2mm ?
[03:09:26] <Connor> after the teeth are cut?
[03:09:57] -!- sumpfralle1 has quit [Ping timeout: 248 seconds]
[03:10:09] <Valen> I didn't think that'd be an issue in brass
[03:10:20] <Valen> see thats why I want to talk to you ;->
[03:11:08] <Valen> 3mm would look better
[03:11:26] <Valen> put a little radius on the edge of the gears
[03:12:58] <Mr_Mayhem> What are the gears to be used for? Just curious.
[03:13:42] <archivist> crossed out or plain
[03:15:15] <Valen> crossed out meaning spokes cut?
[03:15:45] <Valen> spokes would be nice but worst case we can cut those, centring on those wont matter much
[03:15:47] <archivist> yes
[03:16:03] <Valen> its going to be electrically driven but off batteries
[03:17:01] <Valen> so no particular accuracy requirement, but low friction is good
[03:19:36] <archivist> at this size (dia/thickness) mounting and arbour size get "interesting" so drilling some holes and screwing them to a plate to make a lot more rigid
[03:20:07] <archivist> but where and how have to be in mind of spokes

[09:35:52] <Mr_Mayhem> What runs it if not linuxcnc?
[09:36:14] <kengu> something from here, http://www.num.com/web/num.nsf/id/home-en
[09:36:57] <kengu> it is from 1998 and I could not get my hands on the documentation yet. next year (:
[09:38:47] <Mr_Mayhem> Is that for yourself or a client? Like, what would one make with it once it is working? Cabinets, house beams, Doors. I would do speaker enclosures for fun, ha.
[09:39:18] <Mr_Mayhem> Make some killer sub boxes heh.
[09:40:16] <kengu> it is sort of "joint" venture. as in it is for client but I will get full access to it and if they manage to do the products they are thinking with my help then I will get more money.
[09:41:44] <kengu> but yeah. I do not have experience with that kind of machines. ones that do not run linuxcnc in the end. ones that are this big or something that uses fibre optics to transmit signals. But I will learn
[09:42:44] <Mr_Mayhem> Oh, they use fiber? Good idea, to avoid interference.
[09:43:10] <Mr_Mayhem> I see, so you have access to it without needing to pay for it. Best of all possible worlds, I suppose.
[09:44:03] <Mr_Mayhem> I was thinking of this engineer I met in Rochester, NY.
[09:44:19] <Mr_Mayhem> He worked for Xerox and others in audio his whole life. Sold ultrasonic cleaners he designed for the medical field. Anyway, he had these huge diy bass horns filling the corners of his living room. Driving it with a 6" Radio Shack cheapie, he shook the house so bad stuff started falling off the wall.

[09:54:53] <Mr_Mayhem> Same as above or Mach?
[09:55:25] <Mr_Mayhem> Oh, duh. Ncstudio.
[09:57:06] <Mr_Mayhem> It would be fun to work with a machine like that. I hear the plasma needs to have a height thing to keep it behaving as it goes.
[09:57:19] <Mr_Mayhem> Or something like that.
[09:58:09] <kengu> yeah. thc or atc to google if you need more info on that
[09:58:16] <kengu> there is not one on that plasma, yet.
[10:03:07] <Mr_Mayhem> So, the machines you do are for metal cutting. I wonder what they often make with such machines. Like I sort of know, but I don't really know what the plasma or laser cut parts are most commonly used for.

[23:45:47] <ries> they are just bluntly selling it with a re-copyright without giving the source
[23:46:08] <ries> I am just now wondering what's better project whise
[23:46:52] <mozmck> Interesting. I think there is a group that will take them to task for that if you let them know, but I don't remember who.
[23:48:16] <mozmck> I would think it would just depend on your goals/ideals.
[23:51:01] <ries> Hopefully next week...I wrote it in java so they can't sell it on the App store anyways :D (as far as I know....)
[23:53:26] <jdh> tjb1: what is your part?
[23:53:28] <Spida> tjb1: would probably be helpful to know on which continent your are located if you want the fnished part sent to you...
[23:55:08] <tjb1> NY, USA and yes
[23:56:58] <tjb1> jdh: It would be this http://files.e3d-online.com/Drawings/E3D_Heat_Block.jpg that is around 30mm long instead of 16
[23:57:12] <tjb1> If you can do it I would of course have a real print and not chat talk or napkin sketches ;)
