[00:00:00] -!- MacGalempsy [MacGalempsy!~quassel@ip68-12-230-148.ok.ok.cox.net] has joined #linuxcnc
[00:00:23] <cradek> currently our released versions use rtai, which we have been using for years and is harder realtime than linux-rt. There is ongoing work to open up to more realtime platforms in the future, but for controlling machinery today, rtai is what you want. And linuxcnc is distributed as a debian package - if you want sim mode (no hardware control) no special kernel is needed and you can just install it.
[00:00:55] <MacGalempsy> evening

[03:04:43] <Felix29> does anybody here have experience with dc motor rpm feedback loops? (cnc spindle motor)
[03:04:44] -!- skorasaurus has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[03:06:57] -!- micges has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[03:08:59] <pcw_home> Typically a PI velocity loop is used (and things are a lot easier with 4 quadrant motor control)
[03:09:42] <Felix29> yeah, unfortunately I already have a DC motor
[03:09:56] <Felix29> So it's PI and not PD?
[03:10:20] <Felix29> I was thinking about that. But is this better done in analog or a microcontroller?

[03:14:24] <pcw_home> LInuxCNC can run th PI loop
[03:16:02] <pcw_home> typically spindle response times are pretty slow so PID done in a 1 KHz servo thread is plenty fast enough
[03:16:59] <Felix29> Well, that sounds promising. Now I just need to get an encoder hooked up :)

[04:15:39] <somenewguy> does anyone have any idea how difficult it would be for an idiot like myself to setup some kind of routine/script/mcode or whatever to test my home locations?
[04:15:57] <somenewguy> The gist of it is I want to with a single button push "home" my axis, but not re-set my location
[04:16:14] <somenewguy> I just want it to touch off the home switches and report what location they trigger at
[04:16:23] <somenewguy> so if everything is peachy-keen, they should report 0 0 0
[04:17:07] <somenewguy> obviously this must be doable, but I don't konw if it is a half an hour worth of work, or two or three days worth of work
[04:22:31] -!- geografa has quit [Quit: Computer has gone to sleep.]
[04:23:50] Repetier_Man is now known as tjb1
[04:25:46] <Tom_itx> axis has a home button already

[04:28:23] <Tom_itx> HOME_SEQUENCE = 0
[04:28:28] <Tom_itx> would home first

[04:32:54] <somenewguy> ok but I don't want it to home
[04:33:01] <somenewguy> this owuld be a purely "inspection" kind of operation
[04:33:41] <somenewguy> I do not want it to change any values or settings
[04:33:57] <somenewguy> I just want a quick and painless way to see what location the home switch triggers at
[04:34:03] -!- terabyte- has quit [Quit: terabyte-]
[04:34:25] <somenewguy> and it sounds simple enough to be a good first program to cut my teeth on
[04:35:18] <somenewguy> the overall goal is to be able to emperically test the repeatability of home switches with minimal effort, as well as simplify testing for lost steps

[06:14:10] <somenewguy> I have been googling them, however as linuxcnc grows etc you never know what new functions may have sprung into existance and have yet to be properly documented
[06:14:33] <somenewguy> I have learend the hard way in many an opensource project that documentation is not something ppl get terrribly excited about ,and don't always keep up to date
[06:16:34] <somenewguy> but the M100-199 thing will save me from passing random M numbers into the MDI to make sure nothing bites back before I use it lol

[20:37:57] <cradek> or more
[20:40:00] <pcw_home> But its hard to tell. If the original control synthesized the tach
[20:40:02] <pcw_home> feedback from the encoder signals, the tach input might be +-10
[20:40:03] <pcw_home> (and then I dont know why you cant get beyond 60 IPM)
[20:41:27] <pcw_home> You can check easily by measuring the analog control voltage at 60 IPM.
[20:41:28] <pcw_home> if its around 10V then the problem is that you are using the wrong drive input

[20:43:11] <MacGalempsy> im cool with 60in/min. maybe in the future, after the entire machine is up and running, the topic may resurface
[20:43:26] <MacGalempsy> too much other stuff to get up and going ;)
[20:43:28] tjb11 is now known as tjb1
[20:46:27] <pcw_home> to use the proper (reference) input you will have to reverse the feedback
[20:46:28] <pcw_home> (either swap the motor wires or reverse the 7I77 analog output in HAL)
[20:46:30] <pcw_home> Do not use negative PID values

[20:49:58] <MacGalempsy> yes. it required plugging the feedback into the references. then reversing the motor polarity
[20:51:08] <MacGalempsy> no negative PID values, I was under the impression that I and D are not usually used in velocity modes, but why wouldnt someone want to try and dial those in too?
[20:52:25] <pcw_home> You are not running in velocity mode unless you have velocity feedback
[20:54:03] <MacGalempsy> so you think the accuracy would improve if I figured out how to program the encoders to generate the feedback signals?
[20:54:12] <pcw_home> Theoretically negative PID values are OK but the current PID component has a bug with negative integral terms
[20:54:19] <sirdancealot> for anyones reference - https://github.com/koo5/linuxcnc-engraving-comp - fixed the gcode there...one down, just 500321 obstacles to go!

[20:56:46] <pcw_home> I would carefully check how your drives are connected, they may be in torque mode.
[20:56:47] <pcw_home> and if you dont have velocity feedback they must be in torque mode for decent performance
[20:56:49] <pcw_home> (that is a velocity mode drive with missing feedback will not perform very well at all)
[20:59:31] <MacGalempsy> well, I can change the resistors on the drives to run in torque mode

[21:15:27] <pcw_home> A velocity mode drive without feedback will have a double integration
[21:15:28] <pcw_home> in its control path which will make tuning difficult and sub-optimum
[21:18:35] <pcw_home> I suspect (but do not know for sure) that at 8" per minute and no load,
[21:18:37] <pcw_home> the indicated (via encoder feedback) error should be quite a bit less than .0003"
[21:19:44] <MacGalempsy> .00003
[21:20:25] <pcw_home> OK thats better (how many encoder counts does that represent?)
[21:21:14] <pcw_home> you did say 0.0003 above
[21:21:39] <MacGalempsy> my mistake
[21:21:47] <MacGalempsy> the encoder is 50000
[21:21:53] <MacGalempsy> 2500 counts per turn
[21:22:01] <MacGalempsy> and its 5 turns per inch
[21:22:46] <MacGalempsy> so one click is .00002
[21:23:02] <pcw_home> so is the error 0.0003 or 0.00003?
[21:24:15] <andypugh> 0.3 tenths. I would be ecstatic with that :-)
[21:25:23] <MacGalempsy> let me go run it again. and double check.
[21:25:49] <pcw_home> well thats 15 counts which is not great tuning for a 10000/count/turn encoder moving at slow speeds and no load
[21:26:42] <pcw_home> I would expect a well tuned system to keep within a few counts under those conditions
