Back
[00:00:23] <CaptHindsight> just use your infinite heat sink
[00:00:41] <joebog> AKA bucket of nitrogen :D
[00:01:00] <joebog> the gunsmith already has it for hardening stuff
[00:02:42] <kwallace2> I think a small PCB miller would be good with the cncgeeker rig. I would like one so I don't get glass fiber on my mill.
[00:03:06] <joebog> the cipher box doesnt weigh much, plus the wiring on the motors is pretty small !!!
[00:03:21] <joebog> BUT all traces of any specs for the motors has been removed
[00:03:30] <joebog> so Im really working blind there
[00:03:41] <joebog> and 2.5 amps WILL at least turn them
[00:04:28] <kwallace2> You can get a lot of information from the motor with a DVM and a drill press.
[00:04:38] -!- uw [uw!~uw@unaffiliated/uw] has joined #linuxcnc
[00:04:54] <uw> hey what's a good dxf to gcode generator?
[00:04:59] <joebog> well I will ask you about that at a later date :)
[00:05:05] <uw> i use pycam now but man that program sucks
[00:05:14] <joebog> OK all thanks for your help
[00:05:24] <joebog> Ill be back on line later and tomorrow
[00:05:38] <joebog> bye now
[00:05:43] <kwallace2> The drill press is for running the stepper as a generator. G'night.
[00:07:02] <kwallace2> http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Simple_LinuxCNC_G-Code_Generators#Dxf2gcode_import_a_2D_DXF_file_and_produce_G_code ?
[00:09:16] <jdh> I use cut2d. it is payware & windows but simple and works well
[00:10:24] -!- Nick001 [Nick001!~Nick001@173.86.93.173] has joined #linuxcnc
[00:13:55] <zultron> uw what're your main complaints w/pycam?
[00:17:34] <uw> zultron, very inefficient with path making, sometimes (often) makes errors
[00:18:40] <uw> i'm not expecting the best here, but when say engraving it seems like it jumps from the first letter to the last 1000 times before completing either
[00:19:42] <uw> also these errors can be sneeky, where i typically dont spot them until after the piece is being cut and im like "wtf is it doing that?" and I hit the estop
[00:31:21] <kwallace2> Could joebog's Cipher be a relabeled something else? http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j182/amp_mangler/linuxcnc_fitting/cipher3.jpg
[00:31:39] <kwallace2> I can't find anything on Cipher.
[00:48:34] <jdh> it's an enigma

[00:55:18] -!- pdurbin [pdurbin!~pdurbin@server1.greptilian.com] has joined #linuxcnc
[00:56:18] <zultron> uw, sounds like the toolpath strategy is something not suited to engraving. The 3D toolpath strategies in pycam are a dropcutter and waterline algo, maybe one other. Neither of those would be good for engraving. Not sure what the options are for 2D in pycam.
[00:56:42] <zultron> Check out Anders Wallin's libvoronoi videos on youtube.
[00:56:49] <jdh> there are free engraving gcode generators
[00:57:04] <jdh> and dxf2gcode might handle that
[00:57:12] <zultron> Maybe openvoronoi, I forget.

[03:04:46] <joebog> some pictures of the driver boards and cipher box
[03:11:21] <joebog> guess yas are all asleep huh ?
[03:11:43] <WalterN> is there a good open source inventory database type program thing that would be good for machine shops?
[03:13:20] <WalterN> I havent really looked yet... thought I would ask first
[03:13:38] <joebog> Have you looked in the repositries ?
[03:13:56] <joebog> hhmm Im not much help Walter :) sorry
[03:15:27] <joebog> Im sure there is something there that could be adapted with little pain !!
[03:15:36] <joebog> at least thats been my experience
[03:16:54] <WalterN> yeah
[03:17:18] <joebog> Im more a hardware sort of person !!
[03:17:38] <joebog> the reason Im here is to get help on the software more than anything else
[03:17:49] <WalterN> it should be able to store order dates, quantity, have a description, the CNC program, and maybe a picture or three of the machine setup (if its something more complicated)
[03:18:30] <joebog> hhmm that sounds pretty simple !!
[03:18:45] <WalterN> a wiki would technically work, but I think its kind of a lot overkill
[03:18:54] <WalterN> and not really ideal
[03:19:49] <joebog> I use GCstar for some of my stuff, although its more of a "collections manager"
[03:19:55] <joebog> its highly adaptable though
[03:20:27] <joebog> small download very comprehensive and lots of "addons" that you could rename
[03:20:40] -!- karavanjo has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[03:21:12] <joebog> merbbe you are like me a little ?? plug n play to do exactly as I want
[03:21:20] <joebog> never happens that way though :)
[03:24:00] <WalterN> enh
[03:24:18] <WalterN> I've written a few small programs in C before... its kinda fun
[03:24:31] <WalterN> C and java
[03:24:58] <joebog> I built lots of rack cabinets with lots of core memory :)
[03:25:09] <joebog> tape drives that weighed 50 kilos :)
[03:25:32] <joebog> 200lb LINEAR !!! 200 amp 5 volt power supplies
[03:25:56] <joebog> transformer bigger than an average welding machine :)(
[03:26:34] <joebog> Perkin Elmer processor boards
[03:26:45] <joebog> BUT true 64 bit 30 years ago
[03:27:14] <joebog> we used Motorola 68030 as IO controllers
[03:27:14] -!- lucashodge has quit [Quit: I am away now.]
[03:34:02] <kwallace2> joebog: It looks like you have three IM2000F based stepper drivers. The IM2000F datasheets are easy to find. With a little reverse engineering you should be able reuse these.
[03:35:50] <uw> 68030 ah that brings me back
[03:35:58] <kwallace2> You should be able to use a buffer parallel port breakout board and a little wiring to get the axes to move.
[03:38:33] -!- _wilson__ [_wilson__!~chatzilla@50.46.255.134] has joined #linuxcnc
[03:39:55] <pcw_home> Yeah they look like normal step/dir drives (but you need to look up the drive part#, probably on heatsink somewhere)

[03:51:41] <joebog> sorry telephone call
[03:51:43] <joebog> Im back
[03:52:33] <joebog> checked the link, and saved the sheet
[03:52:41] <joebog> and yep you are correct !!!
[03:52:46] <joebog> same drivers
[03:53:31] -!- dhoovie [dhoovie!~kvirc@122.177.198.218] has joined #linuxcnc
[03:54:01] <joebog> AND, my judgement of motor size was close these boards are very close in specs to the five I have ordered
[03:54:25] <joebog> 4 amps peak and 3 amps RMS
[03:54:54] <joebog> the boards I ordered are 2.5 amps !!! but with some additional heatsinking I think they will at least work
[03:58:24] <joebog> have you "had a guess" at the Cipher box origin ?
[04:00:39] <kwallace2> I have no idea.
[04:02:25] <joebog> do you have machines working with Linuxcnc ??
[04:04:01] <kwallace2> http://www.wallacecompany.com/machine_shop/index.html
[04:05:30] <joebog> hhmm I am talking to the right person at least :)
[04:09:18] <joebog> I have neither built nor tested it, so it might work, ... or it might blow up and burn your house down.)
[04:11:06] <joebog> I love your enthusiasm
[04:11:20] <joebog> AND !!!! you use veroboard
[04:11:37] <joebog> I still have boxes and boxes of veropins
[04:11:51] <joebog> AND matrix board pins
[04:12:04] <joebog> the silver plating is going black however
[04:13:33] <kwallace2> It looks like the Cipher has a serial port for the PC connection so might need special control software. You might be able to jog the axes without the PC connection though.
[04:13:42] <joebog> your brisgport mill table is about the same size as the engraver Im working on
[04:13:57] <joebog> yep
[04:14:24] <CaptHindsight> joebog: http://www.kosmodrom.com.ua/data/cncstepdriver/ta8435hq.pdf 1.5A avg. 2.5A peak
[04:14:29] <joebog> I already rewired the motors after sorting the wiring from the breakout board I bought from the Cipher people
[04:14:50] <joebog> $240 for a 25 way D connector and two rows of screw terminals !!!!!!
[04:15:31] <joebog> ouich !!! CaptHindsight
[04:15:42] <joebog> looks like I AM the hindsight :(
[04:16:00] <joebog> those specs are NOT on the website that I could see
[04:16:41] <joebog> I cant jog the motors, BUT at power on the motors run as the controller does a reset
[04:16:46] <CaptHindsight> took some digging
[04:16:53] <joebog> so I know that the motors themselves work
[04:17:02] <joebog> thanks for that
[04:18:11] <joebog> at my age it will be fun, I jump in at the deep end, and with some help I may actaully acheive something that works
[04:19:13] <joebog> have saved the data Captain :)
[04:19:16] <joebog> thanks again
[04:19:36] <joebog> .ua is ukrain isnt it ?
[04:20:33] <ve7it> yahoo... just tried installing autocad 14 under wine on ubuntu 12.04 and it works perfectly (and screaming fast) - the installer says optimized for windows 95!
[04:20:55] <joebog> wow !!! I love that bed feed screw Mr Wallace
[04:22:03] <joebog> old feed screw would have been ajax ???

[04:24:08] <joebog> doesnt ortocad need passwords and registration ?
[04:24:43] <joebog> or was it a dongle ???
[04:25:14] <kwallace2> I don't know what ajax is.
[04:26:16] <joebog> ajax is square thread !!!
[04:26:20] <joebog> like a vice screw
[04:26:32] <joebog> or an ajax jack used in construction
[04:26:41] -!- AR_ has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
[04:26:46] <joebog> hey hey you even know what an antenna is !!!!!
[04:26:54] <joebog> I am glad I met you :)
[04:27:41] <joebog> BUT unfortunately I also know what J numbers are !!!! they are the imaginary dollars in my wallet :D
[04:28:40] <joebog> heh heh heh nice little site Kirk !!!
[04:28:54] <joebog> I earned my backhoe ticket in a 590 super
[04:33:01] <kwallace2> A buddy needed some culverts put in so he had another friend show me what the levers did and what the machine was capable of doing said go at it. It took a while to learn and compensate for the 580 being completely worn out, but it turned out well.
[04:35:18] <kwallace2> This was a two wheel drive, the differential wouldn't lock and the brakes barely worked so it took a bit of planning and care.
[04:35:49] <joebog> you have just described a new 590 M
[04:36:08] <joebog> and nowadays they are joystick NOT control levers !!!
[04:36:31] <joebog> you are an amateur radio operator ??
[04:36:48] <joebog> or dare I say it in goddam a "ham"
[04:37:10] <joebog> goddam = meercan or to spell it american
[04:39:17] <kwallace2> No, my dad was a ham, I have his old Collins radio, but I only got into radio to setup WiFi to my neighbors.
[04:39:35] <joebog> OK
[04:39:40] <joebog> its all good :)
[04:40:05] <joebog> I am not an amatuer either, BUT have built LOTS of radios and antennas
[04:40:13] <joebog> including satelite dishes
[04:40:45] <WalterN> CaptHindsight: you still around?
[04:41:30] <kwallace2> I was a DirecTV installer for a while.

[04:49:59] <joebog> military ???
[04:50:47] <WalterN> job shop mostly, so general
[04:50:53] <WalterN> its the only machine shop in the town
[04:51:00] <joebog> still thats fine !!!
[04:51:33] <joebog> we have several machine shops here in town ( 7500 people)
[04:51:55] <joebog> BUT theres a gunsmith and a machinist that really are artists

[05:37:40] <joebog> they are all split nuts on ajax threads
[05:40:00] <tjtr33> joebog, the amps look useful, the 8 screw pins will map somewhat to the 7 on page 16. ( i dunno where motor power & gnd come in, nor where logic power & gnd come in ) )
[05:40:46] <tjtr33> the output side seems to be a vertical pcb, would likely have the motor connectors at the end exiting the chassis.
[05:40:57] <joebog> I can and will nut that out tjt, I will keep you posted
[05:41:01] <tjtr33> motor power & gnd may com in from that vert pcb
[05:41:19] <joebog> the power transformer even if running 2 teslas is only about 300 watts
[05:41:23] <tjtr33> very nice rotary axis, good pc of kit
[05:41:27] <joebog> its NOT a big system to start with
[05:41:48] <joebog> I think its a failed upgrade from a trafelyte engraver
[05:43:17] <joebog> the best thing I can see, out of the whole show, is that the actual engraving machine is typical of MOST pommie machine tools !!!
[05:43:23] <joebog> buiolt like a bloody tank
[05:44:01] <joebog> and shows no wear or "tight spots" in any of the driven axis
[05:44:31] <joebog> mind you !!! all the belts were on "backwards" when it was received
[05:45:09] <joebog> by backwards I mean that the driving belt was above the driven belt, exactly the opposite of what should be
[05:45:22] <joebog> so both belts were crawling up the pulleys
[05:45:52] <tjtr33> pommie prisoner of mother england HEY we dunno this stuff!
[05:45:54] <joebog> and rubbing on the pulley faces
[05:46:10] <joebog> its prisoner of her majesty :D
[05:46:28] <joebog> POHM = prisoner of her majesty
[05:46:28] <tjtr33> in chicago it dont mean squat!
[05:46:42] <joebog> :)
[05:46:56] <tjtr33> it does look liake a nice machine
[05:47:04] <joebog> it is
[05:47:36] <joebog> its JUST an engraver but arms and bearings are huge and all made of nice cast steel and cast iron for the base
[05:47:59] <joebog> weighs almost 1 tonne
[05:48:06] <joebog> or a tad OVER a yank ton
[05:48:06] <tjtr33> i think you can drive it off a parport (may need opto isolation ) and i think you can suss out the amps ( suss i heard of ;)
[05:48:23] <joebog> yah
[05:48:32] <joebog> I built BIG amps before
[05:48:59] <joebog> like 200 amp amplifiers for driving 50 HP motors for radio satelite dishes
[05:49:02] <joebog> way way back
[05:49:17] <uw> sound fancy
[05:49:33] <joebog> I have bought some amps and an intreface from cncgeeker.com
[05:49:45] <joebog> its JUST to test its "wortheeness"
[05:49:53] <joebog> not the final article

[15:56:03] <zultron> PLM software keeps track of those, and things like product or part revisions, etc.
[15:56:41] <zultron> It's sort of like ERP for R&D, maybe....
[15:57:14] <WalterN> yeah
[15:57:44] <WalterN> zultron: does tryton not have that built in?
[15:58:13] <archivist> where I used to work we got the assembly program modded to disassemble, buy in a printer, take it to bits add main proneter new box, new rom and other bits
[15:59:14] <archivist> and it added typos like me, assmebly was the standard one
[15:59:29] <WalterN> what?
[16:00:08] <WalterN> an assembly program to buy a printer?
[16:00:11] <archivist> taking an item to bits and parting it to stock bins
[16:00:32] <zultron> Tryton is pretty generic ERP. It'll keep track of your vendors, orders, inventory, customers, sales, shipments, accounting, etc.
[16:00:35] <archivist> the company was a printer "manufacturer"
[16:01:02] <zultron> But keeping track of design documents is out of scope for regular ERP systems.

[16:10:50] <zultron> I plan to do various levels of integration with other bits, (like PLM), and everything else I do is in python.

[18:46:03] <Chemeleon> this past spring was super rainy though
[18:46:22] <Chemeleon> may (I think, might have been april or june) we were up 20" of rainfall over the norm
[18:46:32] <Chemeleon> we were getting .5-1" of rain every day for a month
[18:46:50] <Loetmichel> Chemeleon: i can remeber to break the 42km commute in to halfs at a gas station to get a hot coffee and thaw the fingers... because 1 hr on a scooter @ -10 °c and icy rain WILL freeze you ;-)
[18:47:26] <Chemeleon> heh, I bet :)
[18:49:13] <Loetmichel> ... not to mentoin the "slight" effects rain has when it hits a tarmac that is at -10°c ;-)
[18:49:32] <Loetmichel> slight slide effects that is ;-)

[18:51:04] <Loetmichel> the record a few years ago was about -21°c ... but dry and only a foot or so snow. was nice to drive a scooter actually, had the right gloves and everything was fine ;-)
[18:51:19] <Chemeleon> snow is really rare here
[18:51:38] <Chemeleon> maybe 1-3" in the northern part of the state where I am, go an hour south and its rarely more than flurries every couple years
[18:51:50] <Chemeleon> and they dont deal with frozen water real well around here
[18:51:57] <Loetmichel> i can imagine
[18:52:10] <Chemeleon> a couple years ago, a lot of schools were shut down, because the weather people predicited a chance of flurries the next day
[18:52:25] <Chemeleon> we didnt even get that much, but the schools had already made the call to shutdown the day before :)
[18:52:40] <Loetmichel> we have REAL WINTERS over here. and the ppl STILL unlearn how to drive as sun as the first snow flakes hit the ground ;-)
[18:53:01] <Chemeleon> heh, yea
[18:53:24] <Chemeleon> my xterra handles slushy roads really well, two winters ago we got a couple inches, and I could drive around as if the roads were clear
[18:53:46] <Chemeleon> but some lady in a sedan still managed to rear end me with a 30' gap while I was sitting at a stop sign
[18:53:57] <Chemeleon> though she just hit my trailer hitch, not a scratch or dent on my car
[18:54:02] <Chemeleon> big impression on her bumper of my hitch
[18:54:12] * Loetmichel is driving a "beast" with rear drive and VERY bad tires. (beast for germans, to americans its a small car i suppose)
[18:54:32] <Chemeleon> heh
[18:54:34] <Loetmichel> ans STILL i had no accident in the last 13 years
[18:54:50] <Loetmichel> and STILL can go up and down the hills over here in winter ;-)
[18:55:00] <Chemeleon> xterra is basically a suv built on a truck chassis (whereas most suv's now are built on car chassis), RWD in my case
[18:55:16] <Chemeleon> and at the time, I'd just put some very good tires on it a few months prev

[19:05:19] <Loetmichel> you get used to it.
[19:06:23] <Loetmichel> the other traffic participants not so much... have seen my share of wide open eyes and mouths ;-)

[21:29:42] <andypugh> I wouldn't chip a modern diesel. They are hard up against piston and turbo temperature limits. It's not "emissions" that hold them back any more.
[21:30:01] <skunkworks> wow - that got hot enough to melt the piston
[21:30:09] <joebog> a couple of guys have fitted chips and EGT sensors
[21:30:20] <joebog> they still manage to stay below 550 C
[21:30:50] <skunkworks> I have only seen the aftermath of too much boost/knock on a 3 liter v6
[21:31:07] <joebog> the lil 2 litre SY engine holds 9 litres of oil and 13 litres of water ( coolant)
[21:31:29] <andypugh> That's a heck of a lot of both.
[21:31:36] <joebog> the oil is water cooled through a heat exchanger
[21:31:50] <andypugh> Lucky you live in Aus, you would never get the coolant warmed up in Finland.
[21:31:59] <joebog> AND its 100% synth so an oil change costs me $170
[21:32:15] <skunkworks> why change it... ? ;)
[21:32:20] <joebog> I run 5/30
[21:32:32] <joebog> but in the cold you supposed to run 0/30
[21:32:39] <joebog> zero ASA eeekkk
[21:32:50] <joebog> completely against the grain for me
[21:32:54] <andypugh> You get cold? I thought you were in Aus?
[21:33:00] <joebog> my Alfas used 10 litres of straight 50
[21:33:11] <andypugh> Cold is <-10C
[21:33:19] <joebog> I moved 2500 kliks north to escape the cold :)
[21:33:31] <joebog> I was born way down south in Snowy Mountains
[21:33:40] <joebog> now I live in North Queensland
[21:33:54] <joebog> like I said my name is Billy NOT bloody Silly !! :D
[21:34:23] <joebog> yah its still minus 10 down home
[21:34:28] <andypugh> At -30 you can park one of our cars up with a hot engine, leave it idling and come back in an hour to 10C coolant and -5 air out of the heater. It's an interesting side effect of the quest for more fuel efficiency.
[21:34:30] <joebog> mum and bro still live there
[21:35:10] <joebog> and tomorrow is first day of spring
[21:35:50] <andypugh> A mate of mine is heading home to Aus for a visit. This is his track: http://my.yb.tl/Aus68Delivery#help-form-inner-container I can see the next 6 weeks being interesting.
[21:36:17] <JT-Shop> that's what I thought you said andypugh
[21:36:46] <andypugh> JT-Shop: Not that I have ever tried it, but it ought to work just fine.
[21:37:19] <JT-Shop> I can't see why it would not work just fine
[21:37:20] <joebog> long way from australia in SA
[21:38:00] <andypugh> It's a fairly fast boat, and has been round the world 5 times (I think)
[21:38:27] <joebog> its plus 18 degrees here and I have big hiking socks a jumper a flannellette shirt long trousers on
[21:38:35] <joebog> and Im bloody frozen !!!

[21:39:34] <joebog> Although I am an electrical eng, the govt said it didnt want any more engineers up here
[21:39:46] <joebog> so I retrained as a heavy lift crane operator
[21:40:11] <joebog> Im used to sitting in a crane cab in plus 45 degrees out near Mount Isa somewhere
[21:40:19] <andypugh> You gurl! I have seen Finnish kids out on scooters in trainers at -40.
[21:40:54] <joebog> and to comply with health and safety ya have to wear long sleeves and long trousers with steel cap boots
[21:41:14] <joebog> I dont need the helmet till I get out of cab
[21:42:58] <andypugh> w00t! A new toy so I can play with the Mesa SSi component (and debug the driver): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161092134237
[21:43:15] <andypugh> Oddly, it's crane-related
[21:43:44] <joebog> yep I saw that :)
[21:43:56] <joebog> and yer freight is almost same price as the tool
[21:44:07] <andypugh> I suspect it was cheap because the guy can't spell "Laser". In much the same way as my "Renshaw" probe was unusually cheap.
[21:44:17] <joebog> must weigh like 1/2 a ton
[21:44:42] <joebog> yeah but the guy is probably a goddam
[21:44:58] <joebog> NONE of them can spell

[21:57:09] <andypugh> Not on the IRC. I moderate the Forum.
[21:57:32] <andypugh> I can do username/password stuffs though
[21:57:36] <joebog> I see
[21:58:07] <joebog> did you look at the rest of the pics in my photobucket ?
[21:58:16] <andypugh> Not all of them.
[21:58:31] <andypugh> I saw the machine (nice) and the drives and PSU (look re-usable)
[21:58:42] <joebog> tis okay, its just some of the valve gear I made and still make
[21:58:59] <andypugh> It may be that the controller drives the stepper phases directly, but LinuxCNC can do that too.

[21:59:08] <joebog> valves as in vacuum glass bottles with electrons inside :)
[21:59:26] <joebog> PSU I have a new one
[21:59:38] <joebog> I have a 750 watt brand new toroid here
[21:59:56] <joebog> and a couple of 100,000 uF caps
[22:00:19] <joebog> Im an electrical eng remember !!
[22:00:29] <joebog> which reminds me
[22:00:45] <joebog> I have about $100,000 worth of components here
[22:00:55] <joebog> ask if ya need anything !!!
[22:01:03] <joebog> they are all descreet though
[22:01:09] <andypugh> I want to make a Steampunk CNC controller with an oak/brass console and Nixie tubes :-)
[22:01:11] <joebog> I cant see SMD stuff anymore
[22:01:26] <joebog> I have a few nixies :)
[22:01:50] <joebog> I also have about 3000 valves in stock
[22:02:00] <joebog> mostly new, but a few used and tested
[22:02:11] <andypugh> i am also, even though I rarely listen to music, tempted to buy one of the iPhone Valve-amps because the dichotomy is so amusing.
