[05:54:50] <gammax-Laptop1> holaaaa
[05:59:54] <gammax-Laptop1> anyone know the name of the electrical device than can open and close a pneumatic cylinder?
[06:02:11] <KimK> A (pneumatic) solenoid valve? Will that do? There are several types available, depending on your cylinder and what you want to do.
[06:04:20] <gammax-Laptop1> KimK, got a hardinge varigrip that has 2 ports on it... need to operate that bad boy...
[06:04:36] <gammax-Laptop1> want it electronicly done so when I convert to linuxcnc it will be automatic.
[06:05:14] <KimK> I don't know the "varigrip", is this some kind of pneumatic collet closer?
[06:05:25] <gammax-Laptop1> yup
[06:05:31] <gammax-Laptop1> holds 5c collets in lathe.
[06:05:32] <Loetmichel> so its a 2 way acting cylinder without a spring?
[06:05:56] <gammax-Laptop1> as far as I know... yet
[06:06:01] <gammax-Laptop1> yes*
[06:06:15] <Loetmichel> i.E. on port "opens" the collet, one port "closes" it?
[06:06:33] <gammax-Laptop1> I want to say yes
[06:06:44] <Loetmichel> then you need something calles "3/2 wege Magnetventil" in german
[06:06:45] <gammax-Laptop1> id be confused on why else there are 2 ports
[06:06:50] <KimK> I'd use a 5-port valve, that way you end up with reversible A and B outputs so you can have it the "right" way.
[06:07:14] <Loetmichel> something like 3/2 ways solenoid valve in english i would think
[06:07:39] <gammax-Laptop1> 3/2... hmmm
[06:07:41] <KimK> One input/pressure, A & B outputs, and two exhausts (it turns out to be easier to build the valve that way.
[06:09:01] <Loetmichel> KimK: yeah, thats the same that are called 3/2 ways in german
[06:09:46] <Loetmichel> oh, have to go... had to be in the company since 9 minutes, still sitting at home in a morning gown.... :-(
[06:10:36] <KimK> Loetmichel: OK, good. And if they are "2-position, 4-way" valves (only one exhaust port) that's OK too.
[06:10:47] <KimK> Loetmichel: OK, thanks, see you next time!
[06:10:50] <KimK> Bye
[06:11:47] <gammax-Laptop1> Im still a little confused not gonna lie haha
[06:12:41] <KimK> gammax-Laptop1: No problem, you can see a bunch of them at http://www.grainger.com , just go there and pick (left column): Home / Pneumatics / Valves / Solenoid Air Control Valves
[06:14:38] <KimK> You'll want 2-position (because you only need "clamp" and "unclamp") and either 4-way (4-connections) or 5-way (5-connections). You'll only have 3 "real" connections anyway, you'll have either 1 or 2 exhaust ports to make up the total.
[06:17:07] -!- mhaberler [mhaberler!~mhaberler@extern-186.stiwoll.mah.priv.at] has joined #linuxcnc
[06:18:13] <KimK> 2-position means the valve can only select all the way "in" or all the way "out" (assuming it's a conventional cylinder). Sometimes you need to be able to stop somewhere in-between, that's a 3-position. There are several types of those too.
[06:25:31] -!- archivist_herron has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds]
[06:29:15] <KimK> You'll also want to decide what kind of control voltage you want for your solenoid (coil). You'll probably end up with one of: 24V DC (anywhere), 120V AC (US), or 240V AC (Europe?, Australia?). OK, good luck, I've got to go. If you have more questions just post, and I or someone else will scroll back and answer you later. But please be patient.
[06:31:01] <KimK> Goodnight

[06:34:12] <KimK> Oh, you could probably browse Automation Direct too: http://www.automationdirect.com/ or see their assortment at: http://www.automationdirect.com/adc/Shopping/Catalog/Pneumatic_Components/Pneumatic_Valves_-a-_Accessories/Solenoid_Air_Valves_-a-_Accessories
[06:34:45] <gammax-Laptop1> KimK, which one would u take?
[06:34:48] <gammax-Laptop1> buy*
[06:35:02] <KimK> Their prices are probably better, though you may (or may not) have to buy what you want in pieces.
[06:35:16] <gammax-Laptop1> KimK, which one would u buy?
[06:35:24] <KimK> Ha, I would take the cheapest one that will get the job done.
[06:37:59] <KimK> You'll probably have to buy one or two exhaust "mufflers" separately. Plus whatever hose connectors you need. I like to work with the nylon "push-in" hose and quick-lock or Presto-lok(tm) or whatever they call it. But if you want regular rubber (or plastic?) air hose and hose clamps, that's OK too.
[06:38:07] <gammax-Laptop1> KimK, send me link please? lol too many to even look at
[06:38:19] -!- archivist_herron [archivist_herron!~herron@80.175.14.110] has joined #linuxcnc
[06:38:54] <KimK> Usually the solenoid valves are offered in different plumbing thread connections, 1/4" NPT female is pretty popular.
[06:39:18] <KimK> Oh, NPT, are you in the US or are you somewhere else?
[06:39:36] <gammax-Laptop1> us
[06:39:42] <gammax-Laptop1> there not 1/4 though...
[06:39:49] <gammax-Laptop1> smaller than that it seams...
[06:39:54] <gammax-Laptop1> I believe
[06:40:18] <KimK> OK, then some size of NPT should work fine for your valve.
[06:41:25] <gammax-Laptop1> so like this? http://www.automationdirect.com/adc/Shopping/Catalog/Pneumatic_Components/Pneumatic_Valves_-a-_Accessories/Solenoid_Air_Valves_-a-_Accessories/5-port_(4-way),_2-pos.,_Body_Ported_-z-_Manifold_(AVS-5,AM_Series)/AVS-5221-24D
[06:42:34] <KimK> You just need to figure out (start at the beginning) how to put the fittings that you want on your hardinge air chuck. Then what kind of fittings would those be? Then what kind of hoses go on those fittings? What kind of fittings will it take to connect to your solenoid valve, etc.
[06:42:51] <KimK> Looking now...
[06:43:27] <gammax-Laptop1> id love to use that push lock tubing, i can take care of that, i just need to know about the cyl
[06:44:24] <KimK> For some reason your link came thru broken after ...5-port_ That's where it ends.
[06:45:42] <gammax-Laptop1> KimK, check pm maby that came through?
[06:46:59] <KimK> Still came through broken, but on the "clean" page it was easier to do a normal text copy to scrape it. That worked, looking at it now...
[06:47:11] <gammax-Laptop1> ok
[06:47:38] <KimK> s/it was easier/it occurred to me/

[06:52:42] <KimK> gammax-Laptop1: You don't have to have double solenoids (two coils), one coil with spring return would be enough for what you're doing. And the 1/8" NPT will give you small hoses, I wouldn't go below 1/4 unless your hardinge forces you to. Bigger hoses, more air flow, faster clamp and unclamp times. No, you didn't miss anything.
[06:54:52] <gammax-Laptop1> hmmm
[06:57:57] <KimK> You can use double solenoids if you want to though. If you do, then the valve will stay in the position it was last put in (in the event of loss of power, etc., so with a lathe there might be advantages to that too. For safety reasons maybe make "clamp" the normal (spring-return) state?. But now I've got to go. If you're still stumped later, post your Q's. I'll scroll back tomorrow (well, today now, lol) and see if you got an answer. Goo

[22:08:19] <PCW> Nick001-Shop: for a closed loop step motor configuration a PID component drives the stepgenerator rate,
[22:08:21] <PCW> you need to make that connection in HAL but ita 1/2 there already (the PID output used to drive the PWM generator)
[22:08:35] <PCW> s/ita/its/
[22:09:54] <Nick001-Shop> Is that the pid.0.command line in hal?
