About an hour ago i booted the system and ran the lathe through movement, homing, and spindle control tests. I'm ecstatic to have my lathe up and running again!

[09:47:45] <Mjolinor> I am sure soemone must have done it already to give me a starting point, anyone got any links or seen one?
[09:50:40] <archivist_herron> there have been at least one if not two

[10:29:38] <Mjolinor> cheers
[10:29:42] <Loetmichel> i wonder if that can work
[10:30:36] <Loetmichel> i.e: a cheap L298 or such as amplifier, encoders directly to LinuxCNC and let linuxCNC put out a PWM wirt 50% as "stoodstill"
[10:30:54] <Loetmichel> i.e: a cheap L298 or such as amplifier, encoders diri hacvve 18 small DC servos hereectly to LinuxCNC and let linuxCNC put out a PWM wirt 50% as "stoodstill"

[12:54:52] <Mjolinor> I have version 10.04 ubuntu with EMC/axis version 2.5.0-pre2-626g402b6cd. Normally I dont have internet on the PC with emc, it all works well and has done for soem time. As I intending to reconfigure to allow my to make a front end following jthornton tutorial should I let it all upgrade?
[12:55:08] <L84Supper2> it looks like ~60% profit
[12:55:14] <Mjolinor> the ubuntu update manager wants to stick 12.04 LTS in there

[12:55:55] <L84Supper2> yeah
[12:55:56] <Mjolinor> very concerned that it will break. I stopped using ubuntu completely when they started with that new front end thing, cant remmber the name
[12:56:10] <Mjolinor> unity, thats it, does this 12.04 have unity?
[12:56:17] <eric_unterhausen> ubuntu upgrades fairly well
[12:56:22] <eric_unterhausen> yes it has unity
[12:56:32] <Mjolinor> groan
[12:56:34] <Mjolinor> :)
[12:56:37] <eric_unterhausen> I got used to it
[12:56:38] <L84Supper2> paid <$2 for couplings yesterday I see for $6 online
[12:57:13] <Mjolinor> I couldnt get used to it so I moved over to Mint, love that
[12:57:27] <L84Supper2> and that's paying the foreigner price
[12:57:30] <Mjolinor> but I dont want to break my EMC machine
[12:57:36] <Mjolinor> linuxcnc machine
[12:57:57] <eric_unterhausen> there are ways to avoid unity on ubuntu
[12:58:46] <Mjolinor> I know but it got harder adn harder to do with each release so I just gave up with it
[12:59:15] <eric_unterhausen> if I run out of space on the menu bar, then it could be a problem
[12:59:35] <L84Supper2> I wouldn't build my submicron accuracy micro-mill with this stuff, but it's fine for CNC routers and CNC glue guns
[13:00:14] <Mjolinor> are there many changes from 2.5.0 to 2.5.2?
[13:00:22] <L84Supper2> aerotech and similar suppliers have nothing to worry about
[13:00:40] <eric_unterhausen> aerotech is feeding the beast over there
[13:00:55] <eric_unterhausen> I'm guessing they should worry long-term
[13:01:12] <jthornton> http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Released_2.5.X
[13:01:38] <Mjolinor> reading the changelog now, there doesn't seem to be much that willprevent me sticking with 2.5.0
[13:02:05] <Mjolinor> think maybe I should change my hard disk and do a new install perhaps that would be best bet

[13:08:14] <Mjolinor> ok, confused now. THe download is still Ubuntu 10.04. Does this have 2.5.2 in or an earlier one?

[19:11:41] <andypugh> I may be about to do a strange thing. I am going to convert a motor from encoder to resolver.
[19:12:22] <archivist> we wont laugh too much
[19:12:43] <Jymmm> We won't? Oh, yeah, we won't.

[19:14:49] <andypugh> There is something slightly funny about it, there is a spigot in the middle of the stationary part, right where you would expect the motor shaft to be. Anyone seen that arrangment before and know how it all goes together? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261214253903
[19:15:11] <andypugh> I would hazard a guess that it is EM shielding.
[19:16:03] <andypugh> I wonder which is motor-side and which out-side?
[19:16:37] <andypugh> Curiously it had abot a gazillion extra wires all not going anywhere, I suspect there was on-board conversion to digital originally.
[19:16:56] <andypugh> But it definitly is a two-pole resolver, and works nicely.
[19:18:15] <archivist> I have never played with one yet

[19:19:40] <cradek> I wonder if Elson ever did anything with the one I gave him
[19:19:48] <cradek> it was like 10" diameter
[19:19:59] <cradek> had many many poles
[19:20:17] <andypugh> I want one like that for my lathe. In fact I am thinking of making one like that for my lathe.
[19:20:50] <cradek> I gave it to him because his resolver converter couldn't drive it - not enough current or something
[19:21:17] <cradek> he might be interested in passing it on to you if he hasn't messed with it yet
[19:21:34] <andypugh> That one I have appears to have lots of poles, but in practice it doesn't, it is a 2 pole.
[19:22:20] <andypugh> Which leads me to believe that I don't actually know how they work.
[19:22:24] <cradek> haha
[19:23:38] <archivist> I thought the many apparent slots are really magnetic averaging
[19:23:53] <cradek> http://timeguy.com/resolver-colorcodes.jpg
[19:24:00] <andypugh> I know there is a complete circular winding that provides power to the primary. But the primary appears to have many poles, and the secondary has a different many.

[19:24:08] <cradek> I guess this is the only picture I have of it - the outside of the casing
[19:25:12] <andypugh> A common centre tap for the secondaries is most odd.
[19:25:48] <archivist> star instead of delta ?
[19:26:22] <archivist> I could go get a book and read up :
[19:26:25] <andypugh> They are a 2-phase device.
[19:28:31] <cradek> oh wow I found it: http://timeguy.com/cradek-files/emc/PICT6447.JPG
[19:28:36] <andypugh> Having said that, my Arduino-based convertor connects 2 secondary wires together: http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ResolverToQuadratureConverter
[19:29:10] <cradek> I think I tried isolating those two with 1:1 audio transformers
[19:29:58] <andypugh> That appears to be a completely passive rotor.
[19:30:02] <cradek> yes it is
[19:30:25] <cradek> I think elson called it a variable reluctance resolver
[19:30:28] <andypugh> Interesting...
[19:32:09] <cradek> I think each tooth on the rotor caused its own pole
[19:32:23] <cradek> I was tempted to try thresholding it and using it as quadrature, there were so many
[19:33:25] <andypugh> It looks ideal for a lathe spindle, the centre-hole diameter looks very ample.
[19:33:54] <andypugh> Are you using the motor?
[19:34:19] <cradek> the motor under that rotor is my mill spindle
[19:34:44] <cradek> that rotor was pulled off and given along with the cap on the right to elson a few years ago
[19:34:50] <andypugh> Do you have spindle feedback at the moment?
[19:35:04] <cradek> yes I stuck an encoder where this used to be
[19:35:31] <andypugh> Ah, because that rotor would be a perfect target for those gear-sensors (like Jon used on his BP)
[19:36:22] <cradek> true that would be neat
[19:36:42] <cradek> one of us could ask him to bring it in June, if you want it
[19:37:43] <cradek> hm, not sure how you'd get index
[19:37:52] <GammaX-Shop> hey guys
[19:37:57] <andypugh> drill a hole in something.
[19:38:05] <GammaX-Shop> anyone use the shars fly cutters before with hss insert?
[19:38:41] <Tom_itx> could you compare a resolver to an electrical harmonic drive?
[19:38:52] <Tom_itx> in reverse
[19:39:19] <andypugh> There isn't any "vernier" action.
[19:39:42] <andypugh> GammaX-Shop: HSS _insert_?

[19:40:17] <JT-Shop> high speed steel
[19:40:32] <andypugh> Ah, yes, toolbit.
[19:40:41] <cradek> there are definitely a few hss inserts available
[19:40:47] <Tom_itx> few
[19:40:49] <andypugh> "Insert" normally suggests carbide.
[19:41:09] <Tom_itx> or compressed powder or ceramic
[19:41:11] <cradek> but for a fly cutter just grind a square hss on your bench grinder
[19:41:13] <GammaX-Shop> interesting...
[19:41:54] <andypugh> I ought to use HSS more. It's perfectly adequate for anything non-production, and you can choose your own geometry.
[19:41:56] <GammaX-Shop> cradek, how long would one of those bits last before needing resharpening or.. "re edging"?
[19:42:11] <cradek> if cutting butter, years
[19:42:37] <cradek> sorry, that's my smartass way of saying it matters what you're doing with it

[19:43:16] <GammaX-Shop> Im thinkin about getting this http://www.shars.com/products/view/8111/5_Piece_Fly_Cutter_Set
[19:43:20] <andypugh> I think that HSS will last as long as anyone using a flycutter would need.
[19:44:13] <andypugh> (On the basis that flycutters are typically hobbyist use)
[19:44:26] <Tom_itx> or manual mills
[19:44:40] <Tom_itx> we'd use a flycutter on the manual over a shell mill
[19:44:57] <cradek> that's about 3 more flycutters than you'd ever need
[19:45:02] <Tom_itx> yup
[19:45:14] <cradek> the teeeeny shank on the big one makes it pretty silly
[19:45:17] <andypugh> If you want properly flat then single-pointing has a lot going for it.
[19:45:23] <Tom_itx> if you need one, you're planning on cutting a fairly large flat surface
[19:45:35] <GammaX-Shop> yeah but its the only shars that has a 1/2 bit
[19:45:35] <GammaX-Shop> 1/2 inch*

[20:51:46] <GammaX-Shop> knee mill is coming hopefully within the year. Back in the day I had a supermax but my father through it out while I was in afghanista..... wtf is up with that! lol

[20:52:15] <toastydeath> hm
[20:52:31] <Tom_itx> 3" would be about right i'd think
[20:52:47] <toastydeath> "bit size" on a flycutter generally refers to the type of lathe bit it holds
[20:52:53] <GammaX-Shop> well I meant more of... 5/16 1/2?
[20:52:55] <toastydeath> do you mean diameter or bit size
[20:53:25] <GammaX-Shop> I gotta learn to give more attention to detail on how I word things via chat casue I cant physicly show you what im reffering too haha.
[20:53:42] <toastydeath> generally I'd go with the largest bit your flycutter will hold.

[20:53:54] <Tom_itx> less chatter that way
[20:54:05] <toastydeath> you can overhang the bit more when necessary with less trouble
[20:54:48] <GammaX-Shop> well I need to find a fly cutter that is appropriate for my machine and theres many designs with diff bit sizes....
[20:54:51] <GammaX-Shop> thats where im stuck!
[20:55:44] <toastydeath> the smaller the flycutter, the smaller the bit it will hold
[20:56:05] <GammaX-Shop> Im thinkin about the shars but Id really like to get a 7/8's shank...I can get by for not with a 3/4

[20:58:18] <toastydeath> having a flycutter with the spindle taper of your machine is a lot less dangerous than a loose flycutter
