[00:27:42] <s1dev> lol
[00:29:38] <s1dev> any thoughts on welding vs bolting together a frame?
[00:31:09] <Jymmm> OK, WTF.... What is the likelyhood of two differnt car mfg using the SAME PN for a "fuel pump" hyundai and ford.
[00:31:36] <Jymmm> same year veh too
[00:37:07] <L84Supper2> s1dev: bolting won't require the use of a welder
[00:38:03] <s1dev> and that's about it?
[00:38:23] <L84Supper2> bolt are usually easier to remove
[00:38:48] <L84Supper2> are you going to set it up and never move it?
[00:39:07] <L84Supper2> how good are your welds?
[00:39:40] <s1dev> good point
[00:42:43] <L84Supper2> s1dev: what size are you shooting for?

[00:48:59] <L84Supper2> whats the going price of steel shapes per lb?
[00:50:18] <L84Supper2> we used to use non-spec steel pipe for budget projects like this
[00:50:19] -!- modmaker has quit [Quit: ^Z]
[00:51:15] <s1dev> I have no clue about steel prices right now
[00:51:44] <L84Supper2> we used to get it for just over the price of scrap
[00:52:19] <L84Supper2> it wasn't pressure tested or it didn't pass, but it was sched 40 or 80
[00:52:46] <L84Supper2> fine for frames or antenna masts etc etc

[01:05:16] -!- adb has quit [Read error: Operation timed out]
[01:05:39] <L84Supper2> s1dev: depends on the size, shape alloy of the extrusion and the mass and velocity of the spindle :)

[02:46:58] <s1dev> according to wikipedia dovetail slides are not ideal for high precision applications, why is that?
[02:49:58] <Tom_itx> wear
[02:50:19] <Tom_itx> air bearings are probably the best for precision
[02:50:42] <Tom_itx> the cmm we had used air bearings on the axis
[02:54:14] <s1dev> so is there a reason why dovetail bearings would be better than a railed shaft?
[02:55:50] <s1dev> *dovetail slides
[02:58:44] <s1dev> something like this seems perfect for the X axis of a CNC router http://www.mcmaster.com/#ball-bearing-carriages/=l4ihig
[02:58:56] <jdh> rigidity?
[02:59:37] <s1dev> wait, nevermind forgot to look at the price :P

[06:41:16] <tjtr33> when you have multiple .hal files, and a component of same type in each... well the 1st .hal has to loadrt it (like loadrt or2 count =3), this is kinda ugly, and hides knowledge of the loadrt from the 2nd file. better way?
[06:42:52] <Tecan> put it all in one file ?
[06:42:54] <Tecan> :)
[06:43:50] <tjtr33> ah, the 1st file is a stock file 'core_sim.hal' and i didnt wann mess with it
[06:44:11] <tjtr33> keep it virgin
[06:44:41] <tjtr33> else you need to keep a local copy of a stock file with non-standard content
[06:45:25] <tjtr33> no biggee, just clumsy
[06:52:28] <tjtr33> doh, just use local file w name that makes hack obvious [HAL] HALFILE = core_simHACKED.hal

[20:41:30] <mrsun> let the rail grinding begin! =)
[20:41:36] <mrsun> i wonder if the links works ..
[20:41:37] <mrsun> :P
[20:43:34] <tjb1> Yes, what are you making?
[20:44:06] <mrsun> grinding table to make V rails
[20:44:17] <mrsun> insted of using a skate like mechmate
[20:44:25] <mrsun> i get a bonus with this one .. it will be a router table after :P
[20:44:35] <tjb1> I used the cncrp carriages
[20:44:45] <tjb1> I didnt have the time or motivation to make v-rails myself
[20:44:58] <mrsun> will not take long when i get the table done :P
[20:45:01] <mrsun> hehe
[20:45:10] <anonimasu> I machined myself V rollers to ride on rails instead, seemed like a cheap easy option
[20:45:12] <mrsun> just took a couple of days making the table and stuff :P
[20:45:51] <mrsun> http://sphotos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/6638_10151350043888648_1427404812_n.jpg using a die grinder .. i will use a cylindrical grinding bit when i make the rails tho :P
[20:45:59] <anonimasu> tho, i got stuck at that got too much other stuff to machine...

[21:00:53] <cradek> or who paint anything
[21:01:07] <JT-Shop> or put siding on
[21:01:27] <cradek> lathes don't work better with the castings all smoothed with epoxy and carefully painted
[21:01:37] <andypugh> Painting things that are going to have time to go rusty is reasonable.
[21:01:53] <cradek> of course I guess there's nothing wrong with being an artist as well as a machinist

[21:02:08] <cradek> mrsun: nah, that's the off-center stripe
