[00:41:09] <Jymmm> At what PSI what a N2 tank be empty?
[00:43:43] <jdh> 14.7psia, give or take a little for temp/altitude
[00:47:29] <tjb1> Most gauges are already set to atmosphere though.
[00:47:44] <tjb1> Keep that in mind :)
[00:47:49] <jdh> that would be psig
[00:48:20] <tjb1> Learn something new everyday!
[00:50:13] <KimK> Jymmm: We have several nitrogen counterbalances that we have to top off from time to time due to leakage. The sizes vary, but our fill tank becomes "empty" at 850 to 1100 psi, because it is no longer able to overcome the existing pressure. Is that what you mean?
[00:50:42] -!- dimas_ [dimas_!~dimas@46.229.140.233] has joined #linuxcnc
[00:51:10] <jdh> if it is just to displace o2, it is 'empty' at whatever the regulators IP is.
[00:51:15] <KimK> Jymmm: Oh, this is for a laser, maybe?
[00:51:33] <Jymmm> KimK: Yeah. High side reads ~1500, hit the blowgin and get a burst, then just fizzles out
[00:51:40] <Jymmm> POS reg too
[00:52:12] <jdh> that sounds like a flow rate issue
[00:52:32] <Jymmm> I can stop the flow with my finger
[00:52:45] <Jymmm> on the end of the blowgun
[00:53:05] <jdh> is there a restrictive orifice on the output side of the reg?
[00:53:46] <Jymmm> jdh: *I* really dont know. I've never had an issue with it before.
[00:53:56] <KimK> Is this laser a continuous-flow gas system, or is the gas mix recovered, cooled, and re-used?
[00:54:22] <Jymmm> KimK: No it's a 40# N2 tank I use to inflate tires and stuff =)
[00:54:27] <jdh> is there a pressure side guage calibrated in lph or something similar?
[00:54:32] <jdh> low pressure side
[00:54:43] <KimK> Ha, OK, that's different!
[00:55:01] <Jymmm> jdh: it's a volume regulator from HF, not a pressure one.
[00:55:52] <jdh> http://www.harborfreight.com/regulator-gauge-94841.html
[00:55:54] <jdh> like that?
[00:56:00] <Jymmm> Yep, that's it
[00:56:08] <Jymmm> that be the POS =)
[00:56:45] <jdh> the thing the barb fitting is screwed on to is most likely an orifice
[00:57:21] <jdh> you can drill it out for more flow, but the guage will be worthless
[00:57:39] <Jymmm> like a reducer to .0625" ?
[00:58:08] <jdh> probably smaller than that.
[00:58:47] <Jymmm> jdh: I have a pressure valve I could replace the volume gauge with if I remove the orifice. would that work?
[00:59:01] <jdh> pressure gauge?
[00:59:02] <Jymmm> pressure guage
[00:59:16] <Jymmm> pressure guage, not pressure valve.
[00:59:23] <jdh> I'd drill it bigger or put a needle valve on it.
[00:59:34] <KimK> Jymmm: How about finding a welder who needs that flow regulator, and then go back to Harbor Freight and get the pressure regulator you really wanted in the first place?
[00:59:35] <Jymmm> I can't just remove it?
[00:59:53] <jdh> sure, but it will probably work better with a little back pressure.
[00:59:58] <Jymmm> KimK: they dont have any for one.
[01:00:13] <Jymmm> jdh: oh. really?
[01:00:32] <jdh> it's a single stage reg, it will flow differently (higher) when supply pressure drops
[01:00:46] <Jymmm> ah
[01:01:53] <Jymmm> jdh: any suggestion on a real pressure reg to get?
[01:02:09] <KimK> Jymmm: They're out of this one:
http://www.harborfreight.com/oxygen-regulator-94846.html
[01:02:24] <KimK> s/this one/this one?/
[01:02:47] <Jymmm> KimK: That's CGA540, not 580
[01:02:50] <jdh> welding shop will have everything. Pricey though. there are thousands on ebay
[01:03:05] <Jymmm> jdh: Heh, ebay is even MORE pricy =)
[01:03:14] <jdh> you can swap the 540 for the 580, they are almost always 1/4" NPT on the reg side
[01:03:43] <jdh> I have a bunch of ebay regs, never paid more than $25
[01:03:52] <KimK> What, the fitting is different? Can you use the fitting from the one you've got?
[01:04:15] <Jymmm> I thought it was more than the fittign thats different
[01:04:44] <jdh> I get mostly o2 regs and put 580's on them for helium
[01:04:57] <Jymmm> ah
[01:05:20] <Jymmm> jdh: is there a difference other than the fitting (technically)?
[01:05:32] <jdh> not for that kind of reg
[01:05:48] <jdh> better ones are 2-stage
[01:06:28] <KimK> You've got me curious, what's the difference between the fittings for N2 and O2?
[01:06:43] <jdh> in the US, o2 is cga-540, inert gas is cga-580
[01:07:13] <jdh> 346 for air, 347 for high pressure air. Lots of others for med gas, etc.
[01:07:48] <jdh> 580 valve has internal threads, 540 has external
[01:09:26] <Jymmm> ebay doens't seem to have much right now, neiher does CL
[01:09:48] <KimK> OK, thanks. Speaking of gases (OT from LinuxCNC I guess), is anybody using (or know anybody that is using) Compressed Natural Gas? (CNG, not to be confused with propane/LP gas)
[01:10:32] <jdh> I see lots of them on ebay
[01:10:45] <Jymmm> jdh: link?
[01:11:21] <jdh> http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=oxygen+regulator
[01:12:22] <KimK> I saw the Rick Santelli video on converting a pickup truck, he was pretty exited about it. $1.25 a gallon would fire anybody up.
[01:12:37] <jdh> how many btu's in a gallon of cng?
[01:12:45] <jdh> vs. gasoline anyway
[01:12:53] <KimK> Not sure, I'd like to know that too.
[01:13:04] <Jymmm> How many MILES in a gallon of CNG =)

[01:21:06] <KimK> This ->
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gasoline_gallon_equivalent says that they are equvalent at 2400 PSI. But RIck was talking about 3000 and 3600 PSI tanks, where at 3600, a "gallon" of CNG is equal to 3.82 gallons. That makes it less astonishing that their "small tank" (small car too) conversion is only 2 gallons (7.64 gallons).
[01:21:43] <jdh> 2400 psi at the same volume?
[01:21:52] <jdh> it's an awkward way to compare things.
[01:22:43] <pcw_home> there is one mile in a gallon of CNG (and its 1/16"x1/16")

[01:28:43] <KimK> It takes thousands of dollars to get into CNG, but once you're in, you're getting fuel for $1.25/gallon less than gasoline, he must have said? (I haven't checked his figures). Anyway, the payback would be brisk if you drive a lot of miles. Here's a paypack calculator:

[13:06:24] <maximilian_h> the current text says:
[13:06:26] <maximilian_h> COORDINATES = X Y Z - The names of the axes being controlled. Only X, Y, Z, A, B, C, U, V, W are valid. Only axes named
[13:06:26] <maximilian_h> in COORDINATES are accepted in g-code. This has no effect on the mapping from G-code axis names (X- Y- Z-) to joint
[13:06:26] <maximilian_h> numbers—for trivial kinematics, X is always joint 0, A is always joint 4, and U is always joint 7, and so on. It is permitted to
[13:06:26] <maximilian_h> write an axis name twice (e.g., X Y Y Z for a gantry machine) but this has no effect.
[13:06:59] <maximilian_h> however, if "X is always joint 0" then the count starts at 0
[13:07:12] <maximilian_h> then the statement:
[13:07:42] <maximilian_h> A is always joint 4 is wrong, it should read: "A is always joint 3", should it not ?
[13:08:03] <maximilian_h> And the same goes for "U is always joint 7", which should be "U is always joint 6"
[13:08:06] <maximilian_h> ?

[21:14:26] <JT-Shop> tjb1: yes
[21:15:23] <tjb1> JT-Shop: I just ordered the steel for my water table today. 6'x10' 12 gauge
[21:16:40] <tjb1> Alright, thanks andypugh…my 120gb ssd is getting a little cramp with os x, windows 7 and now ubuntu
[21:17:14] <tjb1> JT-Shop: Are you using a antifreeze mixture in your table?
[21:17:26] <JT-Shop> no
[21:17:57] <JT-Shop> sodium nitrite and physan 20
[21:18:25] <r00t4rd3d> http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2012/10/a-big-addition
[21:18:35] <andypugh> ilias_: If there is no feedback back from the drive, then that seems like the way it will have to be,
[21:18:49] <tjb1> JT-Shop: Just to prevent algae and other stuff?
[21:18:57] <andypugh> With no PID there is no point having feedback anyway.
[21:21:10] <ilias_> there is feedback. whatever the value of the feedback is it gets assigned to the motor-pos-cmd. so the motor moves, therefore the feedback increases, and the motor-pos-cmd increases, and so on.
[21:21:50] <andypugh> That sounds wrong.
[21:21:56] <ilias_> until I get a following error and motion stops.
[21:22:12] <andypugh> The feedback is from an encoder?
[21:22:20] <ilias_> I don't understand why this is happening
[21:22:57] <JT-Shop> tjb1: the pysan prevents algae and the sodium nitrite prevents rusting
[21:23:00] <ilias_> the motor feedback goes to the drive and the drive transmits it to the 7i77 encoder in
[21:23:34] <tjb1> JT-Shop: Ill probably still use the antifreeze so it doesnt freeze up here in the winter
[21:24:29] <andypugh> ilias_: And then the encoder input is netted to motor-position-fb?
[21:24:57] <ilias_> yes
[21:25:13] -!- wboykinm has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[21:26:18] <andypugh> Is this a conventional cartesian machine?
[21:26:24] <ilias_> yes
[21:26:27] <ilias_> trivkins
[21:26:55] <andypugh> What happens of you negate the encoder scale?
[21:27:28] <andypugh> What you describe would be normal if there was a PID. But you say you don't have one?
[21:28:24] <tjb1> JT-Shop: This might apply to you -
http://www.cnczone.com/forums/plasma_edm_other_similar_machine/120043-plasma_quench_alternatives.html#post935798
[21:30:10] <ilias_> what i did was that by changing the motor-offset value the motion was changing direction
[21:30:47] <ilias_> no I don't have pid
[21:32:07] <andypugh> There might be some sort of feedback loop through kinematics. (possibly accidental).
[21:32:34] <andypugh> What happens if you just comment out the feedback net?
[21:33:40] <ilias_> it reports that there is no feedback, or something similar I can't remember
[21:33:46] <ilias_> but the machine again stops
[21:34:12] <ilias_> in the developer manual, in the block diagram of the joint controller
[21:35:29] <ilias_> there is a line directly connecting the feedback to command... so i guess that could be the reason...
[21:35:43] <andypugh> Sorry, yes, that was a daft suggestion.
[21:35:50] -!- FinboySlick has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
[21:36:12] <andypugh> Connecting feedback direct to command, and ignoring the encoder values for the moment was what I should have suggested.
[21:36:48] <ilias_> yes, i see what you mean
[21:37:07] <ilias_> after all i tried this as well, so that makes two of us
[21:37:42] <andypugh> A very simple test. Exit LinuxCNC. Open a terminal.
[21:39:59] <andypugh> taking // to mean return/newline/enter. halrun // loadrt hostmot2 // loadrt hm2_pci // loadrt threads // addf hm2_5i25.0.read thread1 // loadrt hm2_5i25.0.write thread1 // addf hme2_5i25.0.pet-watchdog thread1 // start // setp hm2_5i23.0.7i77.0.1.analogout-01 0.1
[21:40:48] <andypugh> You can use tab-completion to gloss over most of the typos I inserted there. Other than the loadrt …. write which should be addf.
[21:40:48] -!- chillly has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[21:44:15] <ilias_> I am not near the machine at the moment but i wrote down the commands...
[21:45:05] <ilias_> this should be working, because the axis is moving with the current configuration and with the current output
[21:45:51] <andypugh> It sometimes helps to remove as much of the puzzle as possible. That final setp command should send voltage information directly out of the 7i77 to the drive. Then you can see if the drive is behaving as expected.
[21:46:01] <ilias_> is there a way to check the command from kinematics to the motion/joint controller?
[21:46:41] <andypugh> Not really, once the stuff is out of HAL it becomes largely invisible.
[21:47:15] <andypugh> (You could add HAL oins to trivkins and recompile, of course)
[21:47:22] <andypugh> (HAL pins)
[21:47:43] <ilias_> recompile linuxcnc???
[21:48:04] <ilias_> or construct a component?
[21:49:16] <ilias_> anyway. tomorrow i will have my hal fie with me
[21:50:43] <ilias_> one last question. In the developer's manual in page 13, the block diagram of the joint controller can be seen
[21:51:59] -!- Keknom has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[21:52:14] <andypugh> I have never read the PDF / Paper manuals. All I know I got from directed searches on the online docs.
[21:52:36] <ilias_> I haven't checked the code yet, but if the block diagram is accurate the feedback is added to the command whether we have input from kinematics or not
[21:53:02] <ilias_> if this is the case then this would explain the behavior.
[21:53:08] <andypugh> Link?

http://www.linuxcnc.org/docs/html/code/Code_Notes.html#_block_diagrams_and_data_flow
[21:54:52] <ilias_> yes
[21:55:20] <andypugh> That shows the sum of the motor offset and backlash compensation being added to command and subtracted from feedback
[21:56:09] <ilias_> and then added to motor-pos-cmd
[21:56:23] <andypugh> No.
[21:56:23] <ilias_> yes yes

[23:54:48] <evokanevo> btw, i'm looking at pci cards with the netmos chipset since they are recommended:
