[02:10:12] <Jymmm> amone have any references for making a jib to hold multiple pieces of thin sheet stock?
[02:10:15] <Jymmm> anyone
[02:10:18] <Jymmm> jig
[02:10:47] <Tom_itx> more detail
[02:11:50] <Jymmm> to hold about 20 GI dog tags so I can laser engave them, flip the jig over to do the other side. Jig will register in the base of the laser, then the pockets will register each dogtag
[02:12:34] <Jymmm> something spring loaded I think would be ideal.
[02:13:42] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: does that help?
[02:14:05] <Tom_itx> you need someone to cnc you a holder
[02:14:41] <Jymmm> I could sandwich three layers together
[02:14:52] <Jymmm> of thn acrylic
[02:14:54] <Jymmm> thin
[02:15:40] <Jymmm> though, I'm not sure how to attach the top (movable) layer
[02:19:06] <jdhNC> why 3 layers, why not just pocket one
[02:19:23] <Jymmm> jdhNC: has to be turned upside down
[02:20:09] <Jymmm> I also need the dogtag at the same height once flipped over.
[02:20:12] <jdhNC> pocket one side, the other is flat. 4 screws or maybe cross bars should keep them all rigidly in place
[02:20:35] <jdhNC> pocket them both (half a dog tag deep)
[02:22:50] <jdhNC> or the 'top' side could just be thinner
[02:22:57] * FinboySlick sends a complaint to jdhNC from the guild of over-engineers for making too much sense.
[02:23:05] <Jymmm> If I dont pocket and use three layers, thin I can do it all on the laser
[02:23:18] <Tom_itx> you have a solution
[02:23:38] <A2Sheds> is there a repo with configs for machines that are not in the EMC2 live CD?
[02:23:47] <jdhNC> even better... middle layer just needs to be the same thickness as the tag
[02:24:07] <A2Sheds> I thought I saw a list somewhere but now I can't find it
[02:24:18] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: But I'm not sure how to attacch them together. I want to be able to "slide" the movable layer so they all pop out at once
[02:24:40] <Jymmm> thats where the spring load part comes into play
[02:25:55] <Jymmm> jdhNC: that I should be able to do, as there is no asthetics involved (normally you can't cement acrylic togehter)
[02:26:09] <Tom_itx> you sure can
[02:26:10] -!- syyl_ has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[02:26:21] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: not without it looking fugly
[02:26:28] <Tom_itx> acrylic?
[02:26:30] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: in LAYERS
[02:26:32] <Tom_itx> sure you can
[02:27:05] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: you can cement layers of acylic without there being bubbles, etc
[02:27:08] <Jymmm> can't
[02:27:17] <Tom_itx> why not?
[02:27:33] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: the cement doesn't flow like that
[02:27:57] <Tom_itx> Weldon #4 is a liquid
[02:27:58] <FinboySlick> ultrasonic friction weld?
[02:28:15] <jdhNC> flat-head screw + tap
[02:28:18] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: Yes, and it still doens't look right.
[02:28:24] <Tom_itx> coat the surface and lay the 2nd piece down like a blanket over the first one
[02:28:37] <Tom_itx> like you would apply a decal
[02:28:54] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: too thick to "roll" it on
[02:29:24] <Tom_itx> how big is the piece?
[02:29:25] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: apx 0.040"
[02:30:06] * Tom_itx waits for 2 more dimensions
[02:30:18] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: It's a GI dog tag
[02:30:29] <Tom_itx> the acrylic
[02:30:54] <Jymmm> 12" x 24"
[02:31:07] <Tom_itx> and besides, who cares if there are bubbles in it? it's a jig silly
[02:31:25] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: That's what I said!
[02:31:55] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: 2011-11-13 18:25:54 Jymmm: jdhNC: that I should be able to do, as there is no asthetics involved (normally you can't cement acrylic togehter)
[02:32:31] <Tom_itx> don't say i can't
[02:32:39] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: pics then
[02:32:46] <Tom_itx> $$$
[02:32:53] <Jymmm> Then you cna't
[02:32:58] <Jymmm> without bubbles
[02:33:10] <Tom_itx> i live 1/2 mile from a plastic company
[02:33:26] <Tom_itx> i assure you they can do it
[02:33:31] <Tom_itx> and i bet i can
[02:33:39] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: capilary only goes so deep, maybe 3" or so, not full penitartion of 12"
[02:34:05] <jdhNC> aren't there cut-outs for each tag?
[02:34:11] <Tom_itx> coat it with solvent then lay the top piece over it
[02:35:02] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: then you need to apply pressure in the middle and edges. It just doesn't look good at all.
[02:35:10] <Tom_itx> ok
[02:35:58] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: Hey, if you find a way that works, I'd be more than happy to try it some time (really), The times I have just didn't work and I tried various methods I could come up with.
[02:36:18] <Tom_itx> if you laser cut the patterns out it wouldn't work
[02:36:26] <Tom_itx> the laser would raise the edge somewhat
[02:36:32] <Tom_itx> it needs to be flat
[02:36:49] <Jymmm> yeah, but I can sand them down
[02:37:03] <Tom_itx> that would ruin the effect you're after wouldn't it?
[02:37:06] <Jymmm> since we dont care about fuglyiness
[02:37:14] <Tom_itx> you want it glass clear and smooth
[02:37:16] <Jymmm> in a jig I dont care.
[02:37:24] <Tom_itx> aarg
[02:37:29] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: oh you mean a finished workpiece
[02:37:39] <Tom_itx> you just said you didn't want it fugly
[02:37:52] * Tom_itx gives up
[02:38:01] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: a finished workpiece no, a jig I dont care.
[02:38:28] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: we were talking jig, then you said you can sandwich acrylic w//o it being fugly.
[02:38:55] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: Then I said bullshit.... blah blah blah
[02:39:13] <Tom_itx> that's about the point i gave up
[02:40:13] <A2Sheds> I use a low viscosity cement for bonding acrylic, no bubbles and is clear
[02:40:20] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: (it IS possible to laser cut without raising the edges, just a bitch to do and I dont have enough power to do that)
[02:40:30] <Tom_itx> A2Sheds i tried to tell him that
[02:40:39] <Tom_itx> even gave him the solvent number
[02:40:51] <Jymmm> A2Sheds: andwich 2 12"x12" sheets together and see what happens
[02:41:15] <Tom_itx> i'm not gonna waste 2 sheets of plastic to prove a point
[02:41:48] <Jymmm> use scrap, I dont care.
[02:42:22] <Jymmm> When the soluvent evaporates about 2" in, it leaves a "watermark"
[02:42:39] <Jymmm> if you try doing the capilary method.
[02:43:00] -!- emc_rules has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[02:43:36] <Tom_itx> i did a similar thing so i could apply solder paste to my boards but i didn't need a top on it: http://tom-itx.dyndns.org:81/~webpage/boards/USBTiny_Mkii/Stencils/stencil_form4.jpg
[02:43:46] <Tom_itx> and i didn't care what it looked like
[02:43:49] <Jymmm> If you coat the whole surface, you have to apply pressure to the face which causes the solvent to bleed out, get on the surface, and take on the impression of the material that is applying pressure.
[02:44:05] -!- jthornton has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
[02:44:50] <Jymmm> Unless of course you use sheets of glass to sandwich the acrylic togehter and apply pressure.
[02:44:55] <Tom_itx> there's another company here that puts things like dandelions in acrylic
[02:45:13] <Tom_itx> in perfect condition with no bubbles
[02:45:21] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: Ack them their technique, I'd REALLY like to know.
[02:45:25] <Jymmm> ask
[02:45:38] <Tom_itx> i doubt they care to disclose that
[02:45:43] <Tom_itx> century mfg
[02:46:06] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: are the flowers "loose" in the sheets?
[02:46:14] <Jymmm> rattle around?
[02:46:16] <Tom_itx> no
[02:46:19] <Tom_itx> not sheets
[02:46:26] <Jymmm> maybe they cast them
[02:46:30] <Tom_itx> full blown 3d
[02:46:50] <Tom_itx> they do all sorts of things like that
[02:47:06] -!- jthornton [jthornton!~chatzilla@216-41-156-59.semo.net] has joined #emc
[02:47:28] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: what is to the RIGTH of the green PCB, a pocket?
[02:47:49] <Tom_itx> what?
[02:47:57] <Jymmm> http://tom-itx.dyndns.org:81/~webpage/boards/USBTiny_Mkii/Stencils/stencil_form4.jpg
[02:48:06] <Tom_itx> nothing
[02:48:11] <Tom_itx> i cut it with an endmill
[02:48:15] <Tom_itx> and left it rough
[02:48:19] -!- emc_rules [emc_rules!~jp@CPE0022b0b54c58-CM001bd71cb794.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com] has joined #emc
[02:48:29] <Jymmm> oh, you milled that pocket?
[02:48:35] <Tom_itx> yes
[02:48:39] <Jymmm> k
[02:48:56] <Tom_itx> as i suggested you do early on
[02:49:08] <Tom_itx> but you would need the center hollow i think
[02:49:28] <Jymmm> yeah, I'm going to grip the ends (so to speak)
[02:49:52] <Tom_itx> so just make a tube and slide them in side by side
[02:50:20] <Jymmm> like a IC tube you mean?
[02:50:27] <Tom_itx> use the chain hole as an index for each one
[02:51:06] <Tom_itx> i'm just tossing out ideas as they pop in my head
[02:51:18] <Jymmm> yeah, I understand.
[02:51:31] <Tom_itx> i'm not there or i would have solved it by now
[02:51:52] <Jymmm> lol bite me
[02:52:14] <Tom_itx> btw, the kapton in those pics has a fairly rough edge
[02:52:18] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: come on by, beer is cold and waiting
[02:52:21] <Tom_itx> relatively speaking
[02:52:34] <Tom_itx> no real desire to visit Ca
[02:52:40] <Jymmm> Tom_itx: Yeah, loves heat, not!
