[01:52:58] <jdhNC> Connor?
[01:53:04] <Connor> Yea
[01:53:09] <jdhNC> wow!
[01:53:16] <Connor> Wow what?
[01:53:19] <jdhNC> what size clamping thingies for the g0704
[01:53:28] <jdhNC> wow, you were actually here and watching
[01:53:40] <Connor> Yea, I just set down at the computer a few min ago.
[01:53:48] <Connor> Clamp set or vise ?
[01:53:57] <jdhNC> clamp set
[01:54:22] <Connor> let me look.
[01:54:23] <Connor> brb
[01:54:29] <jdhNC> 3/8" sounds too small
[01:56:00] <Connor> http://www.harborfreight.com/58-piece-combination-step-block-and-clamp-set-3-8-eighth-inch-16-nc-studs-1-2-half-inch-clamps-5952.html
[01:56:11] <Connor> That's the one I got.. and the T nuts fit perfect.
[01:56:38] <jdhNC> 3/8 fits ok?
[01:56:42] <Connor> Yea.
[01:56:52] <Connor> I can go messure.
[01:57:18] <Connor> It's also the set that shows up when you goto the G0704 webpage.. under Accessories.
[01:57:21] <jdhNC> grizzly 'recommends' their 3/8" also
[01:57:31] <Connor> though, Grizzly has 52 vs 58
[01:57:56] <jdhNC> $10 less
[01:58:17] <jdhNC> do you have a boring bar holder?
[01:58:21] <Connor> Yea, but, catch HF on a Holiday and get 1/2 off.
[01:58:29] <Connor> yes. I got a boring head 3" from Shaars.
[01:58:41] <Connor> along with the Vise and End Mills.
[01:58:51] <Connor> Shars .. not Shaars.
[01:58:53] <Connor> sorry.
[01:58:53] <jdhNC> that soundss huge for this bill
[01:59:16] <Connor> 3" boring head?
[01:59:27] <jdhNC> yeah
[01:59:29] <jdhNC> not?
[01:59:44] <Connor> Yea, it's bigger in person than I though ti would be.. but, it works just fine.. you have to run those at low RPM anyways.
[02:00:27] <Connor> too fast and the machine vibrates the stand and everything.. I ended up setting on my still with my knees brassing the stand because I don't have it bolted down to the floor.
[02:00:44] <Connor> setting in a chair in front of mill no on my mill
[02:00:50] <Connor> grumble.. LOOOONG day
[02:00:53] <jdhNC> what does one do with parallels and the vise?
[02:01:02] <jdhNC> you are making two of everything, right?
[02:01:04] <Tom_itx> lots
[02:01:14] <Connor> Parallels go in vise to push work up above the vise.
[02:01:29] <Tom_itx> and softjaws for the vise
[02:01:36] <jdhNC> that's what I thought... why so many sizes?
[02:01:37] <Tom_itx> for holding odd shapes
[02:01:47] <Connor> can also use the for tramming aids, and Datum points for measurements etc. etc.
[02:01:48] <Tom_itx> different projects require different heights
[02:01:56] <Connor> let me get list of all part # I order from Shars.. brb
[02:05:08] <Connor> http://pastebin.com/m2kk4vtA
[02:06:26] <Connor> I probably would have been better off ordering a starter set from little machine shop..
[02:06:50] <jdhNC> theirs has 7/16" clamping stuff
[02:07:03] <Connor> Yea, that's for the X2
[02:07:42] <Connor> So, $556.34 for tooling, + shipping on a few of those the order didn't have.
[02:08:07] <Connor> I still need a fly cutter, or face mill cutter.
[02:08:20] <Connor> and a Lathe quick change tool post.
[02:08:36] <Connor> OH. Forgot about my 4" 3 Jaw Chuck from Ebay.. let me find the cost on that..
[02:08:57] <jdhNC> that boring bar holder would also work with my lathe with an MT2 shank
[02:09:20] <Connor> yea. I got a 3/4" Straight shank.
[02:09:39] <Connor> So I could use it with my collets, when I got to the Tormach tool holding system.
[02:09:55] <jdhNC> how is the conversion coming?
[02:10:38] <Connor> okay, so $87.89 for the 4" 3 Jaw chuck and a magnetic base with 3 port manifold with adjustable coolant hoses.
[02:10:56] <Connor> So, 644.23 for tooling..
[02:11:08] <jdhNC> that's the chuck on an R8 from magic-8-ball or wtf?
[02:12:02] <Connor> I have all 3 Stepper mounts made.. 4 of the standoff's done 8 more standoffs cut and drilled, I mill to final length and tap and clean up.
[02:12:19] <Connor> 4" 3 Jaw from ebay from 800watt
[02:15:02] <Connor> 800watt on ebay doesn't respond worth a crap to email.. didn't respond to my combined shipping question till after I got my order.
[02:18:00] <Connor> Doesn't look like he has one right now.. but you have a lathe don't you?
[02:18:17] <jdhNC> two actually
[02:18:27] <Connor> So, you don't need that. :)
[02:18:42] <jdhNC> no, I need the magic size 9x20 drive belt
[02:19:22] <jdhNC> http://www.littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=2440&category=-74669629
[02:19:25] <jdhNC> and one of those
[02:19:39] <Connor> Oh yea..
[02:19:43] <Connor> That's nice. :)
[02:20:14] <Connor> http://www.cnczone.com/forums/989352-post38.html
[02:20:29] <Connor> Post on CNCzone with latest pictures of the mill and my parts so far..
[02:21:53] <jdhNC> anything magical about the dimensions of the motor mounts?
[02:22:00] <Connor> Not really.
[02:22:08] <Connor> small ones are 2.5" square.
[02:22:16] <Connor> the holes are clearance holes.
[02:22:36] <Connor> the standoff lengths are... based on the couplers..
[02:23:31] <jdhNC> should be some room either way depending on shaft engagement?
[02:23:50] <Connor> I think Hoss said 1/8"
[02:24:09] <Connor> again, based on his designs and specifications of steppers and couplers.
[02:24:18] <Connor> I can always make new standoff's.. so that's no biggie.
[02:24:57] <Connor> the Z motor mount is bigger... I don't remember what it was.. 3.25 or 3.5 I think.
[02:24:57] <jdhNC> http://www.ebay.com/itm/230671812947
[02:25:11] <Connor> Yea, Those are nice.
[02:25:44] <Connor> you would have to still have a mounting plate or drill them through somewhere..
[02:25:51] <jdhNC> not the same as making them though
[02:26:14] <Connor> http://www.ebay.com/itm/270816340581
[02:26:37] <jdhNC> wow, that's tempting
[02:26:55] <Connor> He can mix/match too.. he has some that are belt instead of direct drive.
[02:27:37] <Connor> http://www.ebay.com/itm/280738594780
[02:28:08] <Connor> My thing is.. i wanted to learn more about milling manually before jumping into full CNC.. so making the parts myself, gives me that time to learn..
[02:28:38] <Connor> like using V-blocks. and parallels, vise etc..
[02:28:59] <Connor> For me, half the fun is making the stuff to make stuff. :)
[02:29:12] <jdhNC> yeah, me too... being able to make a machine do what you want doesn't do much for learning metalworking
[02:30:07] <Connor> I think 90% of a mechanist is in how to setup the material in the fixtures and tooling to do the job.. the last 10% is well.. doing the job..
[02:30:17] <Connor> % may very.. :)

[02:42:58] <Connor> Yup.
[02:43:26] <Connor> OKay.. So I want to make part, that has both ends rounded..
[02:44:07] <Connor> How do you do on manual mill? Turn table.. or some sort of jig (I.E. center drill and then manually rotate the part cutting the outer parameter?

[10:20:36] <awallin_> the servo amp produces 3-phase for the servo. the servo amp itself runs on 1-phase usually if it's low-power (maybe <2kW)
[10:20:51] <awallin_> high-power servo amps might want 3-phase power

[11:03:21] <stillme> well i just got my cnc machine and it only works well when i ask it to carve the default emc logo
[11:04:18] <stillme> when i generate a gcode file from other CAM or even the image-to-gcode in EMC2, the spindle stops spinning and the machine doesnt move on all axis
[11:05:12] <stillme> am at a loss what could be the problem i feel its the gcode generated but i really dont know what else to think
[11:07:00] <stillme> does anyone know what could be causing it??
[11:08:03] <jthornton> your cam program for sure
[11:08:37] <stillme> but i also tried the image-to-gcode in emc2
[11:08:45] <stillme> it didnt work either
[11:13:26] <jthornton> you might have to learn how to code by hand if you can't make your cam programs work
[11:14:42] <stillme> meaning i cant make stuffs like lithophanes?
[11:15:23] <jthornton> you can if you want to
[11:16:06] <stillme> how can i possibly hand code lithophanes?
[11:17:03] <jthornton> you might start with something a bit simpler till you understand why your cam efforts are failing
[11:18:08] <Tom_itx> compare what works against what doesn't work
[11:18:12] <stillme> i looked at the two gcode files, and emc2 logo has lots of # symbol on it

[11:18:51] <Tom_itx> ok, i'm not so used to those from a cam generated file
[11:18:53] <jthornton> did you look in the manual to see what they are?
[11:19:32] <stillme> no i havent i want to read the gcode manual now
[11:19:44] <stillme> i was hopping i didnt have to do this
[11:19:46] <jthornton> that would be a good start
[11:20:09] <jthornton> yes you will have to read the manual and understand g code to trouble shoot your cam program

[11:23:22] <stillme> but the cnc i bought works not when i give it cam generated files, except its the default emc2 logo
[11:24:15] <Tom_itx> sounds like you have isolated the issue
[11:24:30] <stillme> how did i isolate it?
[11:24:44] <Tom_itx> you know what works and what doesn't
[11:25:13] <stillme> i know the emc2 logo works, other cam files dont
[11:25:29] <Tom_itx> so dig into them to see what's different
[11:25:48] <stillme> the old home made cnc works with all cam files but the new cnc works with only emc2 logo
[11:25:59] <Tom_itx> that's what i hear
[11:26:25] <stillme> i will post more findings
[11:27:07] <jthornton> so now it is not a g code problem but a machine problem?
[11:27:22] <Tom_itx> i doubt it
[11:27:29] <Tom_itx> not if the emc default works
[11:27:30] <stillme> no the gcodes are very different
[11:28:06] <Tom_itx> you may have to tweak your code generator a bit so it puts out code emc likes
[11:28:07] <stillme> i feel its gcode issue cause the cam generated gcodes when executed immediately switch off the spindle

[18:04:38] <archivist> most recommend using the live cd
[18:04:40] <archivist> http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/emcinfo.pl?Installing_EMC2
[18:06:46] <[asdf]> I wrote a new driver (src/hal/drivers) and added a new mydriver.c file there. I ran ./configure and make but my driver didnt get compiled (mydriver.o is not threr) what do I have to do to include it in emc? Do I have to modify the makefile?
[18:08:00] <jdhNC> yes
[18:08:36] <[asdf]> its very long what do I have to add?
[18:09:28] <jdhNC> did you use another one in there to start from? if so, just duplicatate its line in the makefile but change the name to yours
[18:11:00] <[asdf]> ya I just copied the hal_skeleton and renamed it to hal_mydriver
[18:11:18] <[asdf]> I found these lines: obj-$(CONFIG_HAL_SKELETON) += hal_skeleton.o hal_skeleton-objs := hal/drivers/hal_skeleton.o $(MATHSTUB)
[18:14:32] <[asdf]> can I just add: hal_skeleton-objs := hal/drivers/hal_mydriver.o ???
[18:14:48] <[asdf]> I mean: hal_skeleton-objs += hal/drivers/hal_mydriver.o ???
[18:15:49] <jdhNC> I'm not good enough at make to tell you without looking and I don't have it installed here.
[18:16:30] <[asdf]> ok, thank you anyway ;)
[18:23:24] <JT-Shop> [asdf]: did you write a component?
[18:24:53] <[asdf]> umm a driver (thos things that live in hal/drivers/)
[18:25:07] <jdhNC> what are you driving
[18:25:33] <[asdf]> I want to drive a VFD for my lathe spindle via rs232
[18:25:50] <JT-Shop> there is a comp for that now that might work
[18:26:07] <[asdf]> oh really?
[18:26:18] <JT-Shop> http://www.linuxcnc.org/docview/html/drivers_GS2.html
[18:26:35] <JT-Shop> if not you can modify it and just use comp to install it
[18:27:32] <[asdf]> does it use rs232?
[18:27:52] <jdhNC> looks that way
[18:28:27] <[asdf]> where do I find it?
[18:28:35] <JT-Shop> I've used with a GS2 VFD
[18:28:47] <jdhNC> nifty, seems to do modbus
[18:28:49] <JT-Shop> you just load it in your hal file
[18:29:03] <JT-Shop> to edit it?
[18:29:14] <[asdf]> I have a Delta VFD-S I dont know but it will have different parameter adresses and stuff
[18:29:21] <[asdf]> ya to edit it
[18:29:57] <JT-Shop> do you have a git checkout?
[18:30:02] <[asdf]> ya
[18:30:25] <JT-Shop> src/hal/comps/user something or other
[18:30:37] <JT-Shop> gitweb seems to be down
[18:30:48] <[asdf]> thx its user_comp
[18:31:28] <JT-Shop> yea I just looked on a linux box
[18:35:44] <[asdf]> I just took a look at it. My VFD features modbus as well and I think that file is a great starting point ;)

[21:44:31] <elmo401> you can really tell it is made with extrusion, the hollow sound it produces when it travels. Will it be rigid enough for metal?
