greetings from fest!
never fails, when I want to read something interesting I don't go to various news sites / blogs, I just check the links in the #emc backlog

What cost effective hardware would you recommend for getting an analog +/- 10V into emc?
into emc? for what?
I would like to monitor the torque output from the amplifiers and put it in a side panel.
I have a board that takes a step pulse (there is also a pwm version) and converts it to +/- 10V. it is from http://www.homanndesigns.com/
I use this to drive a motor controller
twas pretty reasonable (< ~$40)
what kind of signal comes from the amplifiers for torque?
you just want a cheap a/d board?
yeah that or a voltage to freq converter I can plug into my 7i43 board
the signal output is 0-10V for 0-400% torque
Yeah I guess I can always make one.
look for a cheap a/d board on ebay?
atmega328 and a voltage divider + serial/usb?
someone should make a v/f that doesn't require lots of support crap
Too bad the mesa's 7i65 doesn't work yet.. would be a great solution.
You could use a THCAD is its unipolar (not +-10V)
I saw that one on there. Should work as long as EMC can sample the output fast enough.
Its more expensive since its isolated, but it uses a ~$1-$2 V-F chip (AD7740 IICRC)
(you just use the velocity output of an encoder counter in up/down mode)
(so sample rate is not important)
Unfortunatly that means buying another interface, already used all the encoder inputs.
was that a test 2x4 on there
I would rather go with a commercial product then build something, I guess I'll just buy another card.
cblack: if there is even 1 free pin anywhere, it can be used for a single encoder input
I didn't know that. cool
skunkworks Thats a lot of iron to spin like that, I think you need a flashing yellow light...
JT-Work: that was for cutting a switch plate a few years ago
a big switch plate for sure :)
That was the last thing it did before the old control went south
cblack may beed a different FPGA config depending on what you have connected to your FPGA I/O connectors
How close to chios?
I like flashing light... :)
pcw_home: Thanks.. I'll check if theres a firmware that will work.
cradek: Fest Update!
(or whoever is awake)
where is said 'fest'?
in wichita at stuarts shop
I thought wichita only existed in CW songs
skunkworks: what's the inside temperature there?
atmega_: it's also in the title of a Pat Metheny/Charles Hayden(?) album: "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls"
I am not there...
oh, skunkworks was asking about fest. nevermind
rub it in!
I guess I could get my rental car and head over
hmm... I could be there in 23 hours according to google
Wichita .... heh... I always think of the Wichita scenes in Trains Planes and Automobiles
I think of Dorothy
Anyone ever bought one of these chinese spindle motors... worth it, or buy something better? http://cgi.ebay.ca/WATER-COOLE-MOTOR-SPINDLE-2-2KW-AND-MATCHING-INVERTER-j-/260623437789?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cae5e0fdd
no progress on input_v4l2 :)
i've lot of work so on task queue
I finally got my other camera working. It was a newer model of xbox live camera, and wouldn't work. I followed (blindly - stupidly? :-), the info at the link below and it works great now.
[16:23:30] <grommit> http://stemp.wordpress.com/2009/11/03/karmic-get-the-latest-drivers-for-gspca-uvc-usbvideo-and-other/
grommit: nice :)
btw, I think there may be a problem (a feature?) with camview where if the video camera is at /dev/video1 rather then /dev/video0 it won't display anything.
grommit: thanks for bugreport
i think initialization code has to be fixed
current algo is to try devices of form videoX starting from 0 until there are files
if video0 is is missing that it reject to start
I was plugging/unplugging cameras in and out and sometimes it wouldn't display. I then noticed that the camera was at video1. So, I am not 100% sure on this, more trial required.
i've checked code - it tries first 10 devices
well, as I said I am no 100%
may you run it with CAM_DBG=input next time
it will show you what happens
is there a man page on what cam_dbg shows?
no man page
i know only for CAM_DBG=all and CAM_DBG=input
whole list of debug flags may be found at source
i'll give link
[16:29:37] <psha> http://psha.org.ru/cgit/psha/camunits.git/tree/camunits/dbg.h#n79
[16:29:48] <psha> http://psha.org.ru/cgit/psha/camunits.git/tree/camunits/dbg.h#n58
first is not correct
grommit: may you make a screenshot of axis + video in some real task?
so image on wiki page may be replaced with something better :)
I've been getting, from time to time, the message "Unexpected realtime delay: check dmesg for details." What should I look for in dmesg and what might cause this?
with or without cam?
I see this in the dmesg output: [ 1484.200988] In recent history there were
[ 1484.200988] 1618392, 1591440, 1812336, 1366092, and 1601184
[ 1484.200988] elapsed clocks between calls to the motion controller.
[ 1484.200988] This time, there were 1639704 which is so anomalously
[ 1484.200988] large that it probably signifies a problem with your
[ 1484.200988] realtime configuration. For the rest of this run of
[ 1484.200988] EMC, this message will be suppressed.
i'm useless here :)
psha: Using the camera I found a "backlash" problem on my machine. I spent the last couple days figuring out where that was and fixing it. Is that a good enough "real task"?
i think yes :) it's not that important _what_ is task
something to put into wiki in place of my screenshot
your screen shot is what got me excited about this app
cblack: I've heard that they work pretty well
hope yours will be better :)
L84Supper: I was just reading some other people comments on them.. most people were satisfied with it.
cblack: unfortunately most of the feedback on that selling is for "Nail Art 3D Sticker Crystal Decal Diamond Flower" :)
cblack: I was looking at some larger models. I was going to try and see them my next trip out east
Tossed if I should go for the water or air cooled models.
will do the pic in a an hour or so.
cblack: if they designed them well, the water cooled should be more reliable
L84Supper: Yeah, prbly quite a bit quieter as well. I have an old tig cooler that should work fine.

it seem that color of crosshair need to be adjustable
thank you for the help getting it working!
Yes, the crosshair and axis labels
wait a bit...
Also, it would be nice to be able to label the axis (X, Y, Z) for example
it's harder :(
text is not simple in opengl
X, Y and Z may be drawn with lines :)
that would be cheating
psha: somebody must have 3D models of letters somewhere :)
there is GLUT for rendering text (that's how i'm rendering axis values)
but it's not scalable...
has fixed font size
grommit: feeding builder
for color option?
maybe strokes are needed too?
E: Couldn't find package camunits-plugins-emc-misc
hmm, did update. But I don't see a difference in camview....
it seem that some sort of controls have to be moved to -tiny
is the config setting part of crosshair or a new module in Misc?
config part of crosshair
no, no additional config shows up on crosshari
look for old crosshair.so and remove it
well, I remove /usr/lib/camunits/crosshair.so but now I have no crosshair at all...
wait a bit
oops, i've misspelled package name
wait for rebuild
also i'll move crosshair to EMC section of plugins
so will i do: apt-get install --reinstall camunits-plugins-emc-misc
it's 'camunit-....' without s
wait for rebuild
so it'll get correct name
that's better :)
do you need color change in emc, not via stock camview?
You mean an option to change color live? that would be very nice!
so hang on
btw, camview violates the UI rules (if there is such a thing) by not warning when you overwrite a file from it's save dialog. Not your problem, nor a big deal, just fyi...
and also it don't add Ctrl-S shortcut :)
and it was segfaulting on invalid format :)
but other than that, it's great ;-)
wait for a while and install camview-emc
it's sad that in ubuntu window is not resizing :(
as you drag Axis around?
or via the -s option?
as you drag
That would be very convenient. I have a size set with -s and have to drag my window open to be able to see it all
maybe i've newer version of tcl/tk
camview-emc has landed in repo
I updated the color image with a darker color - even more contrasty (http://bgp.nu/~tom/pub/tenths-color.png)
grommit: you've spotted excelent bug in halio :))
should apt-get update be all I need
what bug is that?
first Axis line is blue
you need to install camview-emc :)
sorry for that many of packages but i've not settled what is really needed and what - not
do I need to re-rerun camview and make new chain file, or just go?
you may manuall (with gedit) replace misc.crosshair with emc.crosshair in chain file
and replace camview-tiny command with camview-emc
i've left camview-tiny as example app for pycamunits
and started new one for EMC
btw, no luck...
** (camview-emc:5876): WARNING **: unit_control.c: enum [standard] value is disabled
Unable to instantiate [emc.crosshair]
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/camview-emc", line 64, in <module>
RuntimeError: Unable to instantiate [emc.crosshair]
nevermind that last error (about instantiation)
but now, it seems to ignore the -s (size)
Axis launches, and the control drop down frame is there but the window is just a spec in the upper part of the window
Also, if I run emc-camview via command line I get: http://pastebin.ca/1989381
camview-emc*: command not found
also see: http://bgp.nu/~tom/pub/fubar.png
bash: emc-camview: command not found
qq: this is a new replacement for camview-tiny
grommit: i'm back
fixed size request
grommit: new package will be soon in repo
sudo apt-get install --reinstall camview-emc ?
one of these days I'll guess right! sheesh :-)
reinstall is needed only when you want to reinstall same version
maybe i know why camview is not expanding in ubuntu
need to check though
this is a problem (not expanding)
booting live cd in kvm
for me, the control is just at the bottom of the screen and I can't expand the window enough to control the control!
I need to resize the video down
I hate to ask the obvious question, but how do I change the color?
I have the drop down, but I don
don't seem to have any control over it
if emc.crosshair exists in chain then colorbutton is enabled
if not found - then it's disabled
hmm, how can I tell if it exists? I edited the chain file...
hold on, my fault
I rebuilt the chain file and didn't edit the new one...
oh, now I am back to instantiation error: RuntimeError: Unable to instantiate [emc.crosshair]
how do I get rid of that?
camunits-plug... or camunit-plug....
camunit- have to be purged
it was mistake
really i had to add conflicts but it was too lazy )
errors on install: http://pastebin.ca/1989407
not sure if it matters....
purge camunit-plugins-emc-misc first
sudo apt-get purge camunits-plugins-emc-misc
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package camunits-plugins-emc-misc is not installed, so not removed
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
purge camunit- without s and install camunits- with s
purge and forget about camunit-, i've already fixed and purged it
very nice! it works
Now that I think about it, it is WAY more useful in Axis like this, since everything you view and associated lighting could cause any static color scheme to be difficult to see.
now get on that halio bug to make the other axis change color ;-)
is first axis is always drawn with crosshair color?
camview-emc > RuntimeError: Unable to instantiate [input.v4l2:0] , no more input.v4l2 ?
qq-: i've not removed it :)
maybe device @ /dev/video1?
and how to tell to camview-emc /dev/video1 ?
relace input.v4l2:0 with input.v4l2:1
relace where ?
in chain file
i've reproduced bug on debian :)
psha, there is no more any v4l2 in Input chain
only Example and Log
well that's is i use camview (with-out -emc)
s/is i/ if i
camera is plugged in? :)
and input_v4l2.so present in /usr/lib/camunits?
[21:10:44] <grommit> http://bgp.nu/~tom/pub/colorpick.png
grommit: nice :)
qq-: run it with CAM_DBG=input
is as i do
and output is empty?
[21:14:30] <qq-> http://paste.debian.net/99675/
replace CAM_DBG=input with CAM_DBG=input,driver
psha, if cam is in /dev/video0 , i get a screen only from camview-emc
what is 'screen only'?
i means not all Managed + Display+ Chain . only a display
with title 'camview-emc' and a Controls on bottem
camview-emc is app for control only
ah, ok , but still no image inside
no camera display widget?!
is it flat and small? :)
yes, 2-3 x 2-3 cm
and in 'crosshair color' i can't do nothing
wait for a bit while new version will land in repo
psha, working camview-emc log http://paste.debian.net/99676/
( with no image inside)
sure i resized
camera view is black, frame with 'no units in chain' or just missing?
needs to update git://psha.org.ru/psha/cu-plugins and remake the convert_v4l.so ?
as i remember convert_v4l.so was not working for you?
or it was?
i think it was but no images
that is known as 'was not' :))
it's working for me for convertin MJPEG to RGB/BGR
i'll check if there double-conversion needed for you cam
perhaps this would help qq? http://stemp.wordpress.com/2009/11/03/karmic-get-the-latest-drivers-for-gspca-uvc-usbvideo-and-other/
hes cam is working under qv4l2
but needs conversion since it use strange pixel format
grommit: install new camview-emc
i've added flag that enables crosshair plugin
so you don't need to include it into chain
do I need to remove anything first, or just apt-get update, or apt-get install camview-emc ?
you've already removed buggy package
then to I need to redo the chain file>?
you may leave it as is
or may remove emc.crosshair from it
psha, cool great display + crosshair + crosshair color
qq-: it's working?!
but no image
grommit: i'm adding auto-detection into camunits-emc
removed crosshair unit from chain file. Works fine (still have crosshair).
so you don't need to create chain
No chain at all?
but autodetection _will_ be buggy :)
no, never :-)
with autodetection, already?
A coworker used to have the title "Giant Robot Code Monkey" on his business card. I think you can apply for that position ;-)
need to take off soon
so let's test last version and finish for today
is it built?
you may try current version
it has autodetection but no colorspace conversion
if you camera outputs YUV it won't work
so try it
this is camunits-emc, yes?
sudo apt-get install --reinstall camunits-emc should work, yes?
but --reinstall is not needed
just start camview-emc
oh, i've forgot about emc.halio plugin
E: Couldn't find package camunits-emc
camview-emc is already the newest version.
i did (I thought)
I did apt-get update and then apt-get install and it says I have latest version
Setting up camview-emc (0.0.8) ?
there is 0.0.9 with conversion already there )
qq-: testing versions are built a bit earlier than lucid
Not sure what I am doing wrong...
should I apt-get purge camview-emc and then apt-get install ?
you need just 'apt-get install camview-emc'
worked this time.
I did it twice before and nothing happened
so just run camview-emc
that is, it said nothing would be updated...
seems to work!
but without halio plugin
well, I am not running axis
so would halio still work?
I mean, if it was in there?
i've forgot to add it to chain )
if you have 5 minutes to wait for another build yo'll get it
yes, now running in axis and no coord.
actually, I have to leave. I will try to do it later this weekend, or will be monday...
This is coming along very nicely! Thanks!
ok, so check package version when you'll get hands on it
hope this will be nice addition to axis
qq-: i'll ask for help tommorrow on v4l channel regarding your issue
