[15:20:07] <ChanServ> [#emc] "This is the #emc channel - talk related to the Enhanced Machine Controller and general machining. Website: http://www.linuxcnc.org/, wiki at http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/"
[15:34:25] <moop> have I been stupid and spent time looking at http://jmkasunich.com/cgi-bin/blosxom/software
[15:35:02] <moop> when updated version of the above has been integrated into emc as the puma sample config?
[15:39:15] <cradek> yes
[15:39:46] <cradek> well not stupid, but unfortunately it was a wrong path to go down
[15:42:03] <alex_joni> any lesson learned is valuable ;)
[15:42:20] <alex_joni> moop: what is on that page evolved into vismach which is included in emc2
[15:42:40] <alex_joni> vismach is the basic engine for visualisation different models (driven by HAL pins)
[15:42:51] <alex_joni> and currently there are quite a few models included with emc2
[15:43:04] <alex_joni> included that original puma model, a scara robot, etc
[15:43:18] <alex_joni> for most of them sample configs exist too, so you can just try them out
[15:43:34] <alex_joni> I recently included a more realistic model of a 560 puma
[15:44:16] <alex_joni> http://juve.ro/blog-files/puma/puma560.jpg
[15:58:01] <skunkworks> stop judging me!
[15:58:11] <skunkworks> I cannot take it!\
[15:58:25] <skunkworks> had some really yecky computer problems on the k&t
[15:59:25] <skunkworks> I think it is the pci-e video card. (more testing needed)
[15:59:51] <skunkworks> don't know what happened. Lots of lightning storms lateley
[16:01:10] <skunkworks> thought we had a bad mesa card (didn't initallize the second card.) but after shuffling stuff around - both cards worked singally then togater.
[16:02:00] <skunkworks> together
[16:02:55] <skunkworks> so now we are using the internal card of the goal3 board. (at this res (1024X768) it seems to work OK)
[16:06:56] <moop> the emc puma sample config looks a bit complicated for substituting in control with etch-servo type outputs????
[16:07:41] <moop> looks like at least 3 hours of puzzle
[16:10:12] <skunkworks> what are you trying to do?
[16:10:42] <skunkworks> run a puma style robot using pwm out of the printer port and reading the encoders back?
[16:15:47] <Jymmm> skunkworks: "Yes, it does make your butt look big"
[16:20:14] <Jymmm> skunkworks: "you have been found GUILTY by a jury of your peers. You sentence is death.... by bunga bunga!"
[16:23:47] <moop> yes puma robot control exactly as you said skunk
[16:31:09] <moop> i hate the sound of my own voice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-ePCfHmitk
[16:34:20] <moop> dont waste 8minutes, just watch it from 7:20 to see robot arm
[16:41:30] <Jymmm> moop: Are you from Louisiana or there bouts?
[16:59:41] <moop> no, its my fake american accent, as i said i hate my own voice so i thought i would pretend to be american
[17:00:05] <Jymmm> moop: LOL, it sounds "Cajun"
[17:00:13] <Jymmm> Not bad though =)
[17:00:29] <moop> next video i though i might try german accent
[17:00:29] <Jymmm> where are you rom?
[17:00:35] <Jymmm> hahahaha
[17:00:43] <moop> im english
[17:00:57] <moop> i did not want to sound too posh though
[17:01:01] <Jymmm> Hey, why not try an ENGLISH accent =)
[17:01:26] <Jymmm> BTW, I think you compressed the video a lil bit too much
[17:02:19] <moop> yeah maybe i will try another transcode, that one came out at 52Mb from the original 680Mb
[17:02:41] <Jymmm> YouTube will compress for you btw
[17:04:11] <moop> I know but my net connection is fubar, seems to dropout every hour or so, and with 4hours for a 680Mb upload it could take forever as you tube dont seem to support upload continuation
[17:04:48] <Jymmm> ah
[17:10:56] <moop> im have some strange problem with the puma config, seem to never fully load after i have made some mods to it?
[17:12:46] <moop> does not give an error, just has a clock cursor that never changes to arrow?
[17:16:04] <JT-Hardinge> * JT-Hardinge likes his OD turning g code file... makes it real easy
[17:20:17] <danielfalck> JT-Hardinge: what are you using for that?
[17:21:40] <JT-Hardinge> a little file where I fill in the blanks on the top for some variables then hit go
[17:22:23] <danielfalck> cool
[17:22:29] <danielfalck> using python?
[17:23:14] <JT-Hardinge> I think a few details are missing but here it is http://www.pastebin.ca/1902511
[17:23:18] <JT-Hardinge> all g code
[17:24:29] <archivist> one day we want a gcode to ask questions :)
[17:25:08] <danielfalck> as in "Are you sure you want to do that Dave?"
[17:25:32] <JT-Hardinge> "Good to see you again Dr. Dave"
[17:26:17] <archivist> I do similar settings at the top of my gear cutting gcode, it just needs the ability to ask
[17:27:04] <Gegsite> hi anyone?
[17:27:19] <archivist> and the gcode then has to check and activate the shin kicker if its wrong
[17:27:23] <Gegsite> I will make a cnc turner and I want to use emc2
[17:27:59] <Gegsite> should I use anything specific
[17:28:17] <Gegsite> I tried already with a router and it was fine
[17:28:31] <archivist> you have many options, depends what you want to do
[17:28:32] <foxtrot> whoa
[17:28:45] <foxtrot> is there a way to control an EMC machine with a laptop
[17:28:59] <foxtrot> so that you could have a desktop by the mill
[17:29:15] <foxtrot> and walk over to it with your laptop and see the EMC screen on the desktop
[17:29:19] <JT-Hardinge> I used a 1.5v battery to control my lathe for a while
[17:29:20] <archivist> foxtrot, dont think laptop they have problems
[17:29:20] <Gegsite> like desktop sharing?
[17:29:25] <foxtrot> * foxtrot obviously only has 1 monitor and 2 desktops
[17:31:26] <danielfalck> vnc might work for you foxtrot
[17:31:31] <archivist> I have been known to browse the web irc and cnc off one machine
[17:32:11] <JT-Hardinge> I'm on my Hardinge computer while I make parts and browse the web and talk here and...
[17:33:27] <foxtrot> my machine is like 15ft from my workbench
[17:36:42] <LawrenceG> .....
[17:43:55] <JT-Hardinge> * JT-Hardinge thinks he will make his machine a workbench
[17:51:52] <geo01005_home> geo01005_home is now known as geo01005
[17:55:20] <Gegsite> re
[17:55:49] <moop> so does anyone know why the puma samplefile dont work?
[17:58:32] <moop> seems to show error: can't read "data(pages)": no such variable?
[18:01:57] <moop> i wonder if my harddisk is dieing?
[18:03:07] <Jymmm> JT-Hardinge: Let your machine make it's OWN workbench!
[18:03:15] <Jymmm> the lazy bastard!
[18:51:16] <JT-Hardinge> I can type TnM6 G43 at 90 words a minute now and hit F3 6 different ways
[18:52:18] <Jymmm> i got a monkey that can do twice that
[18:52:52] <Jymmm> wha you mean "hit f3 6 ways"??????
[18:53:29] <Jymmm> like with 6 different hammers?
[18:53:50] <Jymmm> you have 6 keyboards all connected at the same time?
[18:53:56] <JT-Hardinge> YES
[18:54:12] <Jymmm> seriously on the kybds?
[18:59:07] <JT-Hardinge> how thick is aluminum foil?
[19:00:09] <archivist> JT-Hardinge, bug for you http://www.collection.archivist.info/Screenshot-24.png
[19:00:21] <archivist> as thick as you make it
[19:01:03] <archivist> I was just testing the pdf because of a message on the mailing list and found that
[19:01:33] <archivist> overlapping text
[19:03:25] <JT-Hardinge> hmmm wonder what causes that?
[19:04:59] <archivist> dunno pdf is odd
[19:08:44] <archivist> is it my default fonts as the BBC new website is a bit on the crap side too
[19:10:08] <andypugh> Shall I tell my mate Ian that you said that?
[19:10:52] <archivist> yes
[19:11:21] <archivist> hehe, lots of crap comments on the site :)
[19:12:40] <archivist> andypugh, http://www.collection.archivist.info/Screenshot-25.png look top right ish the text under the video links
[19:14:11] <archivist> andypugh, http://www.collection.archivist.info/Screenshot-26.png under most popular on right
[19:14:22] <JT-Hardinge> when making shims out of foil do you put the shiny side up or down
[19:14:33] <cradek> yes
[19:14:36] <archivist> and I cant view around england like I used to
[19:15:05] <archivist> JT-Hardinge, polish the dull side
[19:16:08] <JT-Hardinge> LOL ok
[19:16:58] <archivist> or you would bead blast the shiny side to be awkward!
[19:17:30] <JT-Hardinge> the er16 collet holder is within 0.0005" in height.... that should be good enough for any crap parts I make
[19:22:57] <JT-Hardinge> * JT-Hardinge is extending a 3/8" reamer out to 13.5" long...
[19:24:23] <Jymmm> JT-Hardinge: 2-6mil depending on dollar store or comemrcial supply house
[19:25:50] <Jymmm> Hmmm, I wonder if you could make a house out of foil?
[19:26:35] <JT-Hardinge> it is used it on destroyers to build the room dividers with...
[19:27:07] <Jymmm> JT-Hardinge: By the navy, or the sailors?
[19:27:34] <JT-Hardinge> at the shipyard where I worked many years ago
[19:28:02] <Jymmm> JT-Hardinge: Oh, heh. I thought the sailors didn't like the light coming in, so the made a wall with the only material they had =)
[19:28:14] <JT-Hardinge> it was a honeycomb made from some real thin aluminum with a wood looking plastic outer layer
[19:29:19] <Jymmm> JT-Hardinge: Ah, yeah. I've seen the honeycomb, really strong shit actually. But I was talking about taking like 1,000,000 feet of household foil
[19:29:49] <JT-Hardinge> and wadding it up t make a hut?
[19:30:17] <Jymmm> Well, I think that would be too easy... twisting it into supports and the like.
[19:30:40] <Jymmm> overlapping layers for the roof, etc
[19:31:29] <Jymmm> JT-Hardinge: besides, I think just wading it up it would fall over at the slightest push
[19:47:12] <JT-Hardinge> then I'll make my house from bricks and mortar
[19:57:16] <moop> no make it out of sticks
[19:58:43] <moop> or the hairs on my chinny chin chin
[20:17:55] <JT-Hardinge> archivist: you ever get all that equipment sorted out?
[20:39:52] <archivist> JT-Hardinge, no not really, trying to fix space, garage needs repairs and there is a free shed on the way
[20:40:27] <archivist> no spare money to pay for stuff
[20:40:32] <JT-Hardinge> I like free, I've moved a bunch of dirt for my expansion but not enough
[20:41:46] <archivist> I shall have to buy a new floor for it plus sundries so even free costs £70
[20:42:38] <JT-Hardinge> yea, that's like here is a free dog...
[20:43:15] <geo01005_home> geo01005_home is now known as geo01005
[20:44:41] <archivist> like the free lathe needs a £400 inverter to use it
[20:46:13] <JT-Hardinge> back to treadle power then :)
[20:47:45] <JT-Hardinge> oh this is nice my ER-16 collet set skips three sizes at random... should be 13 in a set and I have 10
[20:48:13] <JT-Hardinge> I should have read the fine print
[20:48:17] <cradek> inch ER sets are always a mess since they're made to flex a certain amount in mm
[20:52:35] <JT-Hardinge> at least they didn't skip the one I need today :)
[20:55:13] <fragalot> note to self
[20:55:23] <fragalot> flip gerber along x axis when milling bottom layer.
[20:55:24] <fragalot> >.>
[20:56:21] <alex_joni> heh
[20:56:31] <archivist> !later fragalot dont forget to flip along x axis
[20:56:54] <fragalot> >.>;p
[20:56:55] <fragalot> :P
[21:05:13] <JT-Hardinge> note to self... quit pressing buttons without reading and mentally grasping what your about to do :/
[21:13:31] <Jymmm> "Hello, nuclear fallout shelter? I'd like to make reservations"
[21:15:27] <andypugh> Am I hallucinating that I saw some Lucid packages somewhere?
[21:17:41] <Jymmm> andypugh: your lucidity regarding lucid packages has been clouded
[21:28:50] <KimK> Is there an undocumented setting in the ini file to select whether the new "table/spreadsheet" tool editor is used (default), or can we enter/choose some other editor (gedit?). I like the new tool table editor, but it's limited to 36 tools (height on our screen, no scroll bars). If we used gedit, we should be able to go up to 56 tools. (We would like 99 tools, but that's another issue for another day.)
[21:33:53] <JT-Hardinge> KimK: it is documented
[21:35:50] <JT-Hardinge> * JT-Hardinge tries to find it
[21:38:36] <JT-Hardinge> KimK: just put TOOL_EDITOR = gedit in the [DISPLAY] section
[21:39:05] <JT-Hardinge> I'm loosing my mind... I I I I need a #5
[21:40:40] <KimK> JT-Hardinge: Great, thanks, we'll try it.
[21:40:51] <JT-Hardinge> it works for sure
[21:42:40] <KimK> Any word when scroll bars will come to the new spreadsheet/table tool editor? We'd stay with the new editor if it had scroll bars.
[21:43:32] <JT-Hardinge> I don't even know who is working on that... I know it was borked for a while then it got fixed
[21:45:09] <KimK> JT-Hardinge: OK, thanks. And I will get back to you on editing documents, as soon as things settle down from the move here.
[21:45:58] <JT-Hardinge> ok, np
[21:48:01] <cradek> KimK: an email to the list or (better) a feature request might get you scrollbars. I bet dewey never considered it being higher than the screen.
[21:48:38] <JT-Hardinge> * JT-Hardinge elects to make the pin fit the hole as I don't have a reamer the proper size on hand
[21:49:09] <archivist> use a bigger hammer then it will fit the hole
[21:49:50] <JT-Hardinge> lol
[21:51:09] <JT-Hardinge> * JT-Hardinge thinks he finally drilled the hole straight with the crooked collet
[22:26:08] <andypugh> It seems to me that Ubuntu in general copes badly with short screens.
[22:27:29] <JT-Hardinge> the only thing worst that that is gedit's bad habit of pasting stuff at random in your files while you edit
[22:33:24] <Jymmm> JT-Hardinge: Sounds like the fat-finger bug
[22:33:58] <JT-Hardinge> what are you trying to say Jymmm
[22:34:33] <archivist> pebkac I think
[22:34:46] <JT-Hardinge> lol
[22:35:35] <Jymmm> Close.... PEBKAF http://technabob.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/giant_keyboard_rug.jpg
[22:37:09] <JT-Hardinge> what a pair of socks lol
[22:37:35] <Jymmm> JT-Hardinge: Here ya go fat-finger boy... http://content.techrepublic.com.com/2347-22_11-38966-38972.html?seq=6&tag=content;leftCol
[22:39:06] <Jymmm> JT-Hardinge: http://www.firingsquad.com/media/hirez.asp?file=/hardware/wolf_king_warrior_review/images/05.jpg
[22:42:51] <andypugh> Reminds me of: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DtbPOXFk00
[22:45:04] <Jymmm> heh
[23:02:04] <JT-Hardinge> if I throw the ball the to first base who gets it?
[23:07:57] <JT-Hardinge> naturally
[23:13:05] <JT-Hardinge> Say Goodnight Gracie
[23:43:37] <andypugh> sudo apt-get install rtai does _something_ but I am not sure what.
