[01:28:33] <nevyn_> nevyn_ is now known as nevyn
[01:29:07] <Dmess> trying again... dos fdisk.. format...sys..reboot.. c: reboot BDI 4.18 install running
[01:29:54] <Dmess> i guess im more BRAIN DEAD than most
[01:30:30] <nevyn> hrm
[01:30:41] <nevyn> minimess: a few years ago
[01:31:11] <nevyn> minimess: I've heard people say.. "I googled foo on msn search"
[01:32:48] <Dmess> minimess is Dmess on another floor
[01:33:08] <nevyn> ah
[01:37:21] <Dmess> i found a box a parts today and my son put together a pI-100 outta them..
[01:39:12] <pfred1> Dmess I left a bar once and found a P100 on the curb
[01:42:46] <Dmess> you dont frequent the establishments i do...
[01:43:00] <Dmess> ; )
[01:50:02] <pfred1> the best PC I ever found I grabbed out of the mud in the metal pile at the dumps here
[01:50:46] <pfred1> I thought it as a real piece of crap and just grabbed it to gut for like the IDC connector and whatnot but when I got it home and saw what it was
[02:01:03] <Dmess> what it was??
[02:02:15] <Dmess> i grabbed a cute little allin1 compact 486dx i used to postprocess APT on for yrs
[02:02:34] <Dmess> dumpster divin'
[02:03:36] <pfred1> Dmess I have to find a pic of it
[02:06:03] <pfred1> Dmess well here's one pic of it can't find the one I'm looking for http://69.249.77.18:10000/Electronics/Projects/NewLab/NewPics/p1010017.jpg
[02:06:40] <pfred1> it's an IBM Aptiva PII500
[02:06:46] <pfred1> PIII even
[02:07:30] <pfred1> 20 GB HDD DVD-ROM and a CD burner
[02:08:50] <Dmess> cool... and that remarkable taste of free
[02:09:17] <pfred1> last junker i picked up I thought was cool til I benchmarked it
[02:09:33] <pfred1> was an HP kayak dual PII450
[02:09:43] <pfred1> but it only had one CPU installed and it was a dog
[02:09:49] <Dmess> thats what this box is...
[02:10:01] <Dmess> mine has 2
[02:10:02] <pfred1> so i gutted it for parts
[02:10:15] <pfred1> threw the RAM into that IBM box
[02:10:18] <Dmess> you still have the mommy board??
[02:10:26] <pfred1> oh yeah
[02:10:41] <pfred1> I got the whole thing cept for the RAM which is all I used
[02:10:48] <Dmess> they are hard to find..
[02:10:48] <pfred1> I got it to run the system
[02:10:56] <pfred1> it's a little weird has like 2 SCSI units on it
[02:11:08] <pfred1> and it wouldn't boot unless one of them had a drive on it
[02:11:25] <Dmess> yeah.. wierd till ya fingered her out
[02:11:34] <pfred1> but I ran a floppy based Linux distro on it and checked it's bogomips
[02:11:48] <pfred1> and I got PI200s that'll kick it's ass
[02:12:10] <Dmess> not this one..
[02:12:32] <pfred1> yeah maybe wit hthe second CPU they run better
[02:12:58] <Dmess> and 1 Gb a ram dont hurt..
[02:13:12] <pfred1> thing was a total bear to work on
[02:13:16] <pfred1> with that air duct in it
[02:13:49] <Dmess> NO fackin room.. mine hasnt had the case on it in 4 yrs..
[02:14:11] <pfred1> it's a heavy system
[02:14:28] <pfred1> I thought I really had somehting when i grabbed it
[02:14:43] <Dmess> its a work horse for me
[02:15:06] <Dmess> the scsi are awesome fast...
[02:15:08] <pfred1> the onboard monitoring seems to drag the system down
[02:15:24] <pfred1> I didn't find the one I have very good on performance
[02:15:37] <Dmess> not even noticable on here
[02:15:51] <pfred1> what bogomips you get on that box?
[02:16:04] <Dmess> did yours hace a plc kinda thing on the front
[02:16:14] <pfred1> Calibrating delay loop... 1595.80 BogoMIPS
[02:16:16] <Dmess> never checked..
[02:16:19] <pfred1> that's this box
[02:16:28] <pfred1> dmesg | grep -i bogo
[02:17:59] <pfred1> I tink the IBM is around 945
[02:18:21] <Dmess> i'll chk later tonite when i reboot to linux
[02:18:40] <pfred1> hmm you run something other than Linux?
[02:18:51] <pfred1> BeOS?
[02:19:52] <pfred1> Jymmm hey how'd reformatting go?
[02:20:18] <Dmess> long story... wifes machine puked .. so i gave her mine . and put winblows98 on an ide till hers gets back..
[02:20:31] <pfred1> huh
[02:20:43] <pfred1> I can't seem to kill a PC i got them like from the 80's here
[02:21:24] <Jymmm> pfred1: didn't yet... broke the mirror and when tested one drive (using mfg utility) set off an alarm on my mobo
[02:21:32] <Dmess> boy.. wifey and kids are HARD on equipment here
[02:21:57] <pfred1> oh I've killed HDDs or CD drives
[02:22:11] <pfred1> HDDs anything past 5 years you're living on borrowed time
[02:22:35] <Jymmm> heh, well I have to pull the rcpt to see if it's under warranty or not
[02:23:24] <Jymmm> Hmmm Trillian is kinda weird
[02:23:46] <Jymmm> irc'ing from the laptop
[02:24:27] <Jymmm> Oh sodenote... Maxtor now makes their utilities available in ISO format
[02:24:46] <Jymmm> CDRW's are wonderful things =)
[02:25:00] <pfred1> I've yet to actually rewrite one
[02:25:15] <pfred1> kinda defeats the purpose of burning something to CD
[02:25:48] <Jymmm> really? oh no, not at all. Whats really great is if you create a bootable cd, you can test it out w/o making coasters
[02:26:07] <pfred1> I use md5sum
[02:26:11] <Jymmm> burn an ISO, dont like it, erase it
[02:26:26] <pfred1> or the loopback to mount the image
[02:26:33] <Jymmm> nothing todo with md5... actually CREATING the bootable disc
[02:26:52] <pfred1> well if the file is right it works
[02:27:10] <Jymmm> boot scripts and menus
[02:27:15] <pfred1> ah
[02:27:28] <pfred1> you're saying if someone releases something that is broken?
[02:28:21] <Jymmm> I create bootable cd's. With menus depending on the problem; maybe password recovery, or virus scanner etc. stuff like that
[02:29:06] <Jymmm> I test everything I create first.
[02:29:24] <Jymmm> I have shitlaods of bootable floppies I can email to ppl
[02:29:37] <pfred1> I like Tom's RTBT
[02:30:08] <Jymmm> lol.... no no I mean like ghosting a hdd, then creating a CYA cd/dvd for it
[02:30:45] <Jymmm> the dvd contains the image file as well as being bootable with ghost on it ans some scripting added
[02:31:24] <pfred1> hey does anyone here have to store small parts?
[02:31:33] <Jymmm> how small?
[02:31:41] <Jymmm> and loose or pkged
[02:31:46] <pfred1> well less than 1/8" thick
[02:31:58] <Jymmm> sure
[02:32:10] <pfred1> this something I invented
[02:32:17] <pfred1> http://69.249.77.18:10000/Electronics/Projects/NewLab/NewPics/p1010020.jpg
[02:32:36] <pfred1> you get this stuff called air conditioner filter foam and slightly modify jeweled CD cases
[02:32:51] <pfred1> stuff stays organized :)
[02:33:20] <Jymmm> ah, cool.
[02:33:34] <pfred1> yeah CDs i keep on spindles anymore
[02:33:41] <Jymmm> except ive thrown out all my jewel cases =)
[02:33:45] <pfred1> so jeweled cases well they not so good for CD storage anymore
[02:33:52] <pfred1> yeah see?
[02:34:02] <pfred1> you threw out good parts storage cases!
[02:34:12] <pfred1> you can even stack them vertically like books
[02:34:33] <Jymmm> heh... just set off the mobo alarm again
[02:34:44] <pfred1> you sure the CPU isn't overheating?
[02:34:49] <pfred1> like is the CPU fan running?
[02:34:51] <Dmess> another attempt foiled...fart stinker..
[02:35:23] <Jymmm> pfred1 yeah, I was running the diag util on the bad drive again and triggered it
[02:35:42] <pfred1> huh
[02:36:24] <Jymmm> I was running the maxtor diagnostic utility which scanns the hdd and I triggered the drive failure alarm on the mobo
[02:36:56] <Jymmm> I have SMART enabled on the mobo
[02:43:35] <Jymmm> pfred1 you familure w/ SMART ?
[02:43:54] <pfred1> Jymmm newp I'm dumber than a box O' rox!
[02:44:37] <Jymmm> * Jymmm sarcasim alarm is on alert!!!
[02:44:39] <pfred1> probably due to all the drugs i took back in the 80's
[02:44:47] <Jymmm> or lack of
[02:44:51] <pfred1> man the 80's were fun!
[02:44:52] <Jymmm> =)
[02:45:21] <Jymmm> depeche mode, etc
[02:45:25] <Jymmm> (sp)
[02:45:31] <pfred1> I was into harder stuff
[02:45:40] <Dmess> you remember the 80's??
[02:45:40] <Jymmm> metalica
[02:45:43] <pfred1> psychedelic furs were cool though
[02:45:53] <pfred1> more like the germs
[02:45:55] <Dmess> sex pistols
[02:45:56] <Jymmm> G&R
[02:46:02] <Jymmm> THE THE ?
[02:46:07] <pfred1> yeah the pistols like the damned better tho
[02:46:09] <Dmess> WHO
[02:46:12] <pfred1> the damned actually had talent
[02:46:35] <Jymmm> heh, Iw as into tthe new wave bands mostly
[02:46:50] <Jymmm> some alternative
[02:46:51] <pfred1> ha ha new wave
[02:47:13] <pfred1> get an album called the decline of the western civilization
[02:47:22] <pfred1> and see what someone has to say about new wave on that :)
[02:47:30] <Jymmm> lol
[02:47:58] <Jymmm> nah, too dark for me.
[02:48:06] <pfred1> hmmm
[02:48:07] <Dmess> commadore 128 days
[02:48:15] <Jymmm> 64
[02:48:22] <pfred1> I had well still have a Sinclair
[02:48:23] <Jymmm> XT
[02:48:27] <Jymmm> working?
[02:48:34] <pfred1> last time I tried it out
[02:48:38] <Jymmm> cool
[02:48:52] <pfred1> what's cool is how i replaced the keyboard on it
[02:48:54] <Jymmm> but no rf adpater to plug it into
[02:48:55] <Dmess> how bout the super pet
[02:49:03] <pfred1> the keyboard it came with really sucked
[02:49:13] <Jymmm> worse the a pc
[02:49:21] <Jymmm> 4 sshoft
[02:49:27] <pfred1> was one of them membrane jobs
[02:49:27] <Jymmm> shift
[02:49:31] <Jymmm> yuck
[02:49:50] <pfred1> so I bought a surplus keyboard from radioshack and matched up the matrixes
[02:49:52] <Jymmm> brb swapping to to test the other hdd now
[02:54:32] <Dmess> commadore made a 64 and 128... as well as a PET and the Super-PET mini computer
[02:54:57] <pfred1> yeah we were all partying too hard back then to really get involved
[02:55:29] <pfred1> lets see an ounce of weed or a computer? baggie!
[02:55:37] <Dmess> i dunno how or why i did... all the hacks were old hippies
[02:55:51] <pfred1> we played a lot of arcade games though
[02:56:09] <pfred1> the money i pumped into arcade games I could have bought a few computers probably
[02:56:27] <Dmess> we made alota games... basic .. assembler...
[02:56:34] <pfred1> sometimes we'd blow $15 in an afternoon
[02:57:15] <pfred1> back then I'd play with TTL logic I built a Z-80 based system
[02:57:41] <pfred1> http://69.249.77.18:10000/Electronics/Projects/OldProjects/proj2/p7100104.jpg
[02:58:06] <pfred1> buying a computer a chip at a time seemed like a good idea to me at the time :)
[02:58:44] <Dmess> yeag.. ive had a few of them projects too...
[02:59:03] <pfred1> by the time I was at this stage with it I just bought a PC
[02:59:12] <pfred1> that took me like 2 years to build
[02:59:18] <Dmess> LOL...
[02:59:52] <pfred1> like anything else as you scale it you run into problems
[03:00:00] <pfred1> that circuit drew almost 5 amps!
[03:00:23] <Dmess> wow... she'd be a hot one...
[03:00:34] <pfred1> nah it had plenty of air circulation
[03:00:42] <pfred1> but i fed it with 14 gage wire
[03:00:53] <Jymmm> 1amp in IC's, 4amps in the blower motor =)
[03:01:28] <Jymmm> fuck... the other hdd jsut set off the alarm too =(
[03:01:45] <pfred1> http://69.249.77.18:10000/Electronics/Projects/OldProjects/proj2/p7100098.jpg
[03:01:49] <pfred1> big power supply!
[03:02:44] <Dmess> thats a p/s
[03:03:05] <pfred1> dual voltage
[03:04:23] <pfred1> this thing sucked back some juice http://69.249.77.18:10000/Electronics/Projects/OldProjects/proj2/p7100090.jpg
[03:07:38] <Dmess> function??
[03:08:02] <pfred1> it's a 7 segment display
[03:08:17] <pfred1> latches and displays 4 bit binary
[03:17:03] <A-L-P-H-A> still no g2002 on www.geckodrive.com?
[03:38:16] <Dmess> im off...gotta go look for the 14 yr old
[03:38:24] <Dmess> ; )
[03:38:47] <A-L-P-H-A> hope you mean your child... and not the micheal jackson kinda of prowling.
[03:41:15] <Dmess> LOL.. yeah.. ;)
[04:02:30] <pfred1> Jymmm wb
[04:11:26] <A-L-P-H-A> Dmess, found the kid?
[04:12:22] <Dmess> yeah.. hes at a friends for the nite...
[04:13:46] <A-L-P-H-A> You need to implant an RFID + GPS tracking unit under his skin. You can run the antenna out on the top of his head.
[04:13:58] <A-L-P-H-A> :)
[04:14:48] <A-L-P-H-A> or be like those parents where they leash their childing on short teathers. ~2m worth of teather. So funny on the ski hills when I see that. Or at shopping malls. Silliness.
[04:16:09] <Dmess> we used to ski with toddlers like that... iv taught 2 yr olds to ski..
[04:17:01] <A-L-P-H-A> I nearly ran over a few kids... hehe... cute kid, maybe ~4... playing on the half pipe with the father watching behind... they'd just go up, scrap the sides, and come back down.
[04:17:30] <A-L-P-H-A> I shouldn't have let them go first.. they took too long on the pipe.
[04:17:48] <Dmess> courtes RULES
[04:17:53] <A-L-P-H-A> and I'm barreling down on them... and they decide to go SLOW in the transition... so I nearly ran them over. that wouldn't have been run.
[04:18:02] <Dmess> courtesy even
[04:18:08] <A-L-P-H-A> I was there first...
[04:18:24] <A-L-P-H-A> they were already 3/4 down the pipe already, before I started to go.
[04:18:39] <Dmess> you were also the better boarder..
[04:18:42] <A-L-P-H-A> just that they took more than 2 minutes to finish the LAST 1/4 of the pipe.
[04:19:20] <Dmess> right of way goe to the slowest vessel..
[04:19:34] <A-L-P-H-A> wasn't that I didn't give them enough time... it's only maybe 75m MAX length. More like 50m probably.
[04:19:55] <Dmess> and you blasted it..
[04:20:05] <A-L-P-H-A> they only had like 15m left of the pipe... before I even started.
[04:20:47] <A-L-P-H-A> hey! I did get nice air! before I realized I was going to run the little kid over... so I bailed... caught an edge, and fell over. :) hehe. oh well... I would have felt worse if I hurt the little kid.
[04:21:32] <Dmess> we ran a ski hill up in northern ontario my buddy hit a kid in a full tuck with a snomobile...
[04:21:45] <pfred1> cool
[04:21:49] <Dmess> NOT
[04:21:54] <pfred1> did he go like hey wow?
[04:22:27] <A-L-P-H-A> Dmess. this was at Blue Mountain.
[04:22:34] <Dmess> head on basicly he went oh shit... my sis was ski patrol at the time..
[04:22:53] <Dmess> no Raven Mountain... near Kirkland Lake
[04:22:59] <A-L-P-H-A> guy get hurt bad?
[04:23:04] <A-L-P-H-A> I've got no clue where that is.
[04:23:17] <A-L-P-H-A> I board at blue mountain, and I live in Pickering. a bit of a drive.
[04:23:48] <Dmess> leg pelvis punctued lung...but ya gotta treat it as a spinal till hes at hopsital
[04:23:57] <Dmess> im in oshawa
[04:24:12] <A-L-P-H-A> yes, I know injuries... I used to lifeguard.
[04:24:46] <A-L-P-H-A> Dmess, you run EMC, got a shop? what toys?
[04:24:52] <Dmess> shit i give up speed skiing it was too dangerous .. so i took up hang gliding instead..
[04:25:22] <Dmess> im still working on geting it up and running.. brb
[04:29:10] <Dmess> sorry
[04:29:53] <A-L-P-H-A> so what machines you got running? Are you converting? or already have the toys?
[04:30:27] <Dmess> the EMC BDI has found a B thats too D to I the flackin' thing
[04:31:09] <Dmess> im planning on getting a used cnc .. im a cnc Applications Engineer
[04:31:18] <A-L-P-H-A> I'm _slow_ [actually haven't moved for a while] moving to EMC... still using turbocnc (which I registered)
[04:31:56] <Dmess> im looking for a few small stepper drives... any ideas?
[04:32:00] <pfred1> just seems like anything that needs realtime microsoft products wouldn't be the best choice to me
[04:32:03] <A-L-P-H-A> but isn't there a lot of machinists in oshawa? [and missuaga]
[04:32:20] <A-L-P-H-A> Dmess, www.geckodrive.com [I use them... excellent product and support]
[04:33:00] <Dmess> not in Oshawa... miss.. yes.. but too long a drive.. been at it too many yrs..and miles..
[04:33:24] <Dmess> i was lookin for used and cheap..
[04:33:38] <A-L-P-H-A> missuaga, cause of the airport... so lots of places get stuff done there... plus the manufacturing plants around there.
[04:33:44] <pfred1> cheap and CNC don't go hand in hand
[04:34:16] <Dmess> i know... ever heard this one..
[04:34:27] <A-L-P-H-A> Dmess, uh... checked out the auctions? Sometimes mills go for CHEAP... manual bridge port style, $800CDN. + 10% buyers premium + 15% tax. :( that hurts.
[04:34:33] <pfred1> only cheap ones seem to be them burnt out Bridgeport jobbies
[04:34:45] <Dmess> pick any 2... you can have it cheap... fast... or correct
[04:35:07] <pfred1> seems like machine shops burn out them CNC bridgeports then toss them
[04:35:31] <A-L-P-H-A> Dmess, know where busybee tools is? [don't buy from them, just look]. It's out in pickering, right off brock rd. (not st)
[04:35:45] <A-L-P-H-A> pfred1, not locally here.
[04:36:14] <pfred1> yeah they burn out the control units
[04:36:15] <Dmess> i have a friend whos looking into a bmc-20 toshiba twin pallet 4 axis 40" x 30" x 40"
[04:36:27] <A-L-P-H-A> those mills aren't too bad... they're bench top. Depends on what you're looking for. how big? production speeds? what?
[04:36:27] <pfred1> I know a guy got one for free
[04:37:18] <Dmess> cat 50 5- axis would be ideal... i'll pick it up as scrap..
[04:38:06] <A-L-P-H-A> Dmess, good luck finding one around GTA that will toss something like that. :) [or any CNC mill]
[04:38:11] <Dmess> any thought about a lathe module for EMC??
[04:38:22] <A-L-P-H-A> we have toooo many resellers and reconditioning tradesmen in the GTa.
[04:38:36] <Dmess> i know many of them...
[04:39:07] <pfred1> around here machining is not really viable so shops go under
[04:39:14] <A-L-P-H-A> same, people know that they'll pay the owner money [to pick it up, and move it themselves].
[04:39:20] <Dmess> i used to work for Toshiba... then did a spell with DMG
[04:39:58] <Dmess> Team Machine Tools...
[04:40:07] <A-L-P-H-A> heh... wonder what the employee discount would be for toshiba? hehe... "um, yeah, I like to buy this 1/4mill wire EDM machine, think I could get a 20% employee discount?"
[04:40:23] <A-L-P-H-A> $250K
[04:40:28] <pfred1> water jets are cool
[04:40:40] <A-L-P-H-A> all machining equipment is cool.
[04:40:48] <pfred1> no water jets are really cvool
[04:40:53] <Dmess> DMG has an Ultrasonic machining center
[04:40:54] <A-L-P-H-A> I just got a trade magazine... it's a 3D laser cutter.
[04:40:57] <pfred1> blasting through a foot of steel
[04:41:12] <pfred1> they cut cleaner than lasers
[04:41:27] <Dmess> make?? Deckel-Haho
[04:41:43] <A-L-P-H-A> Dmess? who were you addressing?
[04:41:51] <Dmess> you sorry..
[04:42:09] <A-L-P-H-A> there's a bunch.
[04:42:15] <A-L-P-H-A> Prima-na.com is one.
[04:42:17] <Dmess> the 3d one??
[04:42:38] <A-L-P-H-A> yeah.
[04:42:55] <Dmess> its a piece a work that machine...
[04:43:16] <Dmess> siemens control??
[04:43:22] <A-L-P-H-A> salvagini.com is another.
[04:43:29] <pfred1> yeash! "During minimally invasive neuroradiology procedures, doctors insert a catheter through the groin and into the brain, and small coils are used to clear up the bulge."
[04:43:34] <A-L-P-H-A> no clue... I just saw their ad.
[04:43:38] <pfred1> man them people are scumbags
[04:43:49] <pfred1> they gotta make a living so they going to charge high
[04:44:13] <A-L-P-H-A> pfred1, you're rambling.
[04:44:25] <pfred1> that resellers never give good deals?
[04:44:30] <pfred1> dealers
[04:44:43] <Dmess> thats like Russian Dentistry... they go in thru your ASs
[04:45:25] <A-L-P-H-A> uhuh. I'm leaving this conversation in search for some nice soothing tea.
[04:45:26] <pfred1> yeah to do brain surgery I wouldn't think to stick a tube up someone's privates!
[04:45:39] <pfred1> but hey if it works
[04:45:55] <Dmess> anyone ever seen the Toshiba ORBITAL function in action
[04:46:59] <pfred1> Dmess one guy I read about built a CNC machine and he got his linear bearings for free from a scrapyard
[04:47:03] <pfred1> they came out of a welder
[04:47:13] <pfred1> THK or whatever that brand is
[04:47:31] <Dmess> thk.. yeah..
[04:47:45] <pfred1> those things usually set you back a piece
[04:48:03] <pfred1> Dmess what kind of a machine do you want?
[04:48:14] <pfred1> CNC is so well broad a category
[04:48:20] <Dmess> they do ... where are you located pfred1
[04:48:34] <pfred1> I'm in the process of moving
[04:48:45] <pfred1> right now I'm in a suburb of NYC
[04:48:54] <pfred1> and it sucks here!
[04:49:22] <Dmess> as i said im an applications guy... and if im gonna build my own it'll be like no other
[04:49:36] <pfred1> I've seen so many different kinds
[04:50:06] <pfred1> like what sort of work do you want to do then?
[04:50:17] <pfred1> mill metal?
[04:50:28] <pfred1> wood router?
[04:50:30] <Dmess> well imagine a boring mill type 4 axis mill
[04:50:37] <Dmess> metal only.
[04:50:41] <pfred1> ah
[04:50:45] <pfred1> yeah that's the tough stuff
[04:51:08] <Dmess> then the spindle picks up a 3 jaw chuck
[04:51:15] <pfred1> no one really making homemade machines that can really do metal
[04:52:11] <Dmess> you part goes in there and the chuck moves to the other end of the travel and turs it off of a stationary toolpost
[04:52:55] <Dmess> but im gonna nigger-rig a few real metal machines together
[04:53:01] <pfred1> like a mill with a rotary table?
[04:53:46] <Dmess> yes... + you can put a lathe chuck on th spindle as well
[04:53:50] <pfred1> * pfred1 wants a rotary table for his mill ...
[04:54:14] <pfred1> but it's further down the list than other wants i have
[04:54:47] <Dmess> then off on the end of your table you have lathe tools set up so othe part fits between them and you change toos
[04:55:17] <pfred1> sounds complicated
[04:55:42] <Dmess> ever seen a harding chncII
[04:55:44] <pfred1> personally i ascribe to the KISS theory because i am :)
[04:55:57] <pfred1> nah just them old Bridgeports
[04:55:58] <Dmess> table type tooling
[04:56:02] <pfred1> well we had a CNC lathe too
[04:56:09] <pfred1> that actually worked
[04:56:17] <pfred1> well we knew how to work it at anyrate
[04:56:31] <Dmess> what control
[04:56:40] <pfred1> heck if i know I didn't run it
[04:57:10] <pfred1> Eddie ran those things
[04:57:14] <pfred1> well he tried to
[04:57:33] <pfred1> he always had the manual out for the Bridgeport
[04:57:47] <pfred1> and he'd spend days scratching his head before he got it to do anything
[04:59:13] <Dmess> not good...
[04:59:46] <pfred1> he was a whiz on the turret lathe though
[04:59:54] <Dmess> my job is to get ppl up and running as fast and as safely as possible..
[05:00:34] <pfred1> I remember when my shop instituted the safety glasses rule
[05:00:43] <pfred1> after the forman got a metal splinter in their eye
[05:01:00] <pfred1> Roman!
[05:01:04] <pfred1> heh he was funny
[05:01:14] <pfred1> from communist Poland
[05:02:35] <pfred1> the company at one point tried to make their own CNC machine but it never happened
[05:03:00] <Dmess> gotta dream big
[05:03:15] <pfred1> yeah well when you're 84 it's hard to take on new projects i guess
[05:03:23] <pfred1> poor old Henry
[05:04:05] <pfred1> he was a cool old bird though!
[05:04:21] <Dmess> ive had some like that too
[05:04:25] <pfred1> man he'd come int othe shop and lift vises up onto the milling tables
[05:04:35] <pfred1> I'd run over and go Henry what are you doing?
[05:04:43] <pfred1> give him a hand
[05:05:04] <pfred1> freaking 200 pound vises!
[05:05:29] <pfred1> his other big thing was grinding metal splinters out of his hands
[05:05:37] <pfred1> remove the offending flesh!
[05:05:51] <pfred1> he was a piece of work
[05:06:17] <Dmess> ive had to do that too..
[05:06:19] <pfred1> his son was such a scumbag
[05:06:26] <pfred1> such a freaking loser
[05:06:58] <pfred1> the asshole would come in and regal us with storeies of how he'd burn 200 gallons of gas in his speedboat
[05:07:23] <pfred1> yeah nice that you can blow $400 in 2 hours
[05:07:29] <pfred1> and can't pay us!
[05:16:28] <Dmess> thats never good..
[10:24:06] <an0n> morning everyone
[10:29:30] <an0n> morning paul
[10:29:55] <paul_c> Morning.
[11:11:42] <bowie> Hi All!
[11:13:02] <paul_c> Afternoon
[11:13:05] <bowie> i am a newbie in emc, but not in linux and rtlinux...I have some problem with compiling the emc source? Is there anybody who can help me?
[11:13:15] <paul_c> maybe...
[11:13:23] <bowie> thanks...
[11:14:25] <paul_c> First, which distro are you running ?
[11:15:43] <bowie> so, i doenload the src, from sourceforge, I compiled kernel 2.2.18-rtl and rtlinux3.0, but when i'd like to compile the emc neither of the IO control progam will compile...
[11:16:16] <bowie> such as minimillio or simio..
[11:16:42] <bowie> there is no io control program in the linux/bin dir
[11:16:47] <paul_c> checkout rcslib & emc from cvs - The tarball is buggered.
[11:17:27] <paul_c> then... Make sure you have pciutils-dev installed
[11:17:49] <paul_c> along with tcl & tk dev packages.
[11:18:43] <bowie> ko i am checking....
[11:18:47] <bowie> ok
[11:19:38] <paul_c> BTW... Don't use gcc-2.96
[11:26:57] <an0n> :)
[11:28:11] <paul_c> dinner time...
[11:30:31] <an0n> * an0n yawns
[11:30:35] <an0n> an0n is now known as anonimasu
[12:06:42] <paul_c> another adeos patch released...
[12:09:33] <anonimasu> nice
[12:09:40] <anonimasu> I found somthing strange with emc btw..
[12:09:53] <anonimasu> when running or leaving it on for long passes the GUI starts to lag more and more..
[12:10:40] <A-L-P-H-A> those are hard to track... :(
[12:10:46] <anonimasu> yeah
[12:10:49] <A-L-P-H-A> hate those issues.
[12:11:06] <paul_c> emc2 or 1 ?
[12:11:07] <anonimasu> I havent checked it out throughfully like resource usage..
[12:11:09] <anonimasu> emc1
[12:11:13] <anonimasu> but the system bogs down..
[12:11:30] <anonimasu> when pressing esc to abort a motion it takes about 15 secs
[12:11:33] <anonimasu> to respond
[12:11:40] <anonimasu> if it does at all..
[12:11:48] <bowie> So I downloaded 1.18 from cvs, I checked pciutils-dev it's installed, but i have the same problem
[12:11:58] <paul_c> how long are you running EMC for ?
[12:12:06] <anonimasu> I leave it on in the shop always..
[12:12:12] <anonimasu> maybe a day..
[12:12:19] <anonimasu> without doing anything on the machine..
[12:12:58] <bowie> i use debian distro
[12:14:21] <paul_c> bowie: Where did you get the 1.18 number from ?
[12:14:43] <bowie> from the generic.run
[12:14:47] <bowie> i think
[12:15:08] <anonimasu> brb
[12:15:15] <paul_c> generic.ini....
[12:15:24] <bowie> ooh i am sorry....from the generic.ini
[12:16:23] <paul_c> Did you checkout over the top of your original compile ?
[12:16:27] <bowie> may i show my error log in private?
[12:16:59] <paul_c> DCC it over...
[12:17:40] <A-L-P-H-A> paul_c, damn... the support you do give. :)
[12:18:53] <A-L-P-H-A> paul_c, did I tell you I finally got it up and running? it being multiple monitors? ubuntu changed from xfree, to xorg, so I was editing the wrong file for a while. :( [solved it a day afterwards, took a couple of hours]
[12:19:33] <paul_c> how many monitors ?
[12:23:33] <A-L-P-H-A> 3+1tv. On two cards... one pci, one agp
[12:23:42] <A-L-P-H-A> two to each card.
[12:25:13] <A-L-P-H-A> xinerama was the key... and that agp and pci are referranced differently. As well as monitors are not referrended by port, but by card... err. so many things.
[12:25:22] <A-L-P-H-A> xorg chan helped out, as well as the #ati chan.
[12:27:04] <anonimasu> very nice
[12:27:05] <anonimasu> :)
[12:27:16] <anonimasu> I'll have to get around to set up a display box out in the shop someday soon
[12:27:49] <A-L-P-H-A> I'm off to sleep... 7:37am... spent all evening watching movies.
[12:27:52] <A-L-P-H-A> saw
[12:28:08] <A-L-P-H-A> attack on presaint 13.
[12:28:16] <A-L-P-H-A> couple of tv shows.
[12:28:28] <A-L-P-H-A> 'ight. I'm off
