asdfqwega: I carried one for a while, it was kind of fun but I got tired of carrying it around
asdfqwega: one of those spiral-bound pocket notebooks can do almost everything the PDA can (except cost you hundreds of dollars when you drop it in the toilet accidentally)
the funny thing is my friend actually did that to his $600 (?) clie? clei? whatever it's called
* robin_sz wonders if picnet is here again
no one around?
can I hide too?
* alex_joni hides...
* paul_c ponders what bugs to fix today...
* alex_joni thinks today is not a good bug-fixing day
fixed one yesterday, don't see why I can't do another one today.
well... at least it's not a good bugfixing day for me...
* alex_joni is sick
* paul_c bounces around full of beans...
* alex_joni got his kilt... ;)
still waiting for it to be delivered ...
didya order the rest of the kit ?
yeah... it's kinda a lowcost kit
"become scottish for 10$ ..."
do they send you a pdf of a sporran to print out and wear?
it's around 100 squid
for the sporran?
for the kit
it's a kilt & shirt
and do you have any scottish ancestry?
so the tartan doesn't matter to me ;)
at least not the colors
do you often see irish people wearing kilts?
The Scots migrated up through Ireland originally...
well... don't really know about irish / scottish background :(
just one of those things on my to-read list...
Do you have a liking for whisky...
* robin_sz goes out
could have said "Yiddish tendancies"
I only have some romanian, hungarian, and very little moldavian roots
how's the weather in the uk?
grey & raining.
I can't wait to get out of town
* alex_joni needs sleep ...
* paul_c wants to head to warmer climes for the winter...
nice... no storms around this time of year?
* paul_c wants do Honking Haggis @ Waitomo
beats me what that is...
Honking Haggis @ Waitomo ?
[12:34:31] <paul_c> http://www.waitomo.co.nz/haggas.html
talking about some peacefull holidays
Harwood's Hole - A 200m pitch to get to the bottom of the entrance...
wouldn't wanna go there ;)
how about http://www.skyjump.co.nz/
this sounds nice: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/ngexpeditions/expeditions_trip_961.html
bugger that for a game of soldiers... I want somewhere warm.
there are a lot warm ones too... but too expensive for me
* alex_joni goes home...
just doing a search to find out why this dumb winxp has slowed down
I hate this os
03Zathras 07BDI build system * 10Babylon Cluster/emcioctl.c: File changed. New revision:emcmodule.c
03Zathras 07BDI build system * 10Babylon Cluster/Makefile: File changed. New revision:22.214.171.124
* paul_c is slowly working through the code fixing minor bugs.
ah...found some dumb memory mapper for video card that is using 95% of cpu...nvidea says it should not be there
have to reboot....later
paul...don't use nvidea products
* robin_sz returns from a intersting meeting with a rep
some comapnies have weird pricing ...
I just found out my "64m nvidia geforce" is really 32
heh ... youve been done!
this company that makes belts and gears ...
if I have the standard pulley, they can bore them out from the standard pilot bore ..
cost is ~12GBP + 3GPB for the bore ...
it loads a memory emulator called rscmpt.exe that fakes the other 32 but uses 99% of the processor
why the special bore?
if I order them with a special tooth form, then they can do the bore at the same time ... pirce is 9 GBP total
if you order them as specials you get OEM pricing ...
out of the catalogue its just standard pricing ...
I use the gates gt form for most things...has the best regitration they say
weird though ... I eneded up ordering a batch of 20, with the bore I need, for less than I was paying for 20 out of the catalogue
I just hired a part time employee finally today
20 hours a week of sanding
emc creates jobs!
a little bit anyway
used the dc motor for rotary sanding
need a brake normally to shut it off
but with the dc motor I just use a dpdt switch to short the motor windings through a power resistor
trouble is I don't have the right size resistor in the parts bin
and did you buy a supply of dustmasks?
good point...I am about out
I am using a little electric heater for the resistor
oh...also...the shop has 3 micron dust filtering
it helps a lot
or cartridge filter
no just 3M filtrete. Actually it might be electret
you know what the worts possible thing for dust is ina wood shop?
I put a big furnace blower in a box with 2 of the filters
those big dust bag collectors .. the cloth bag over a plastic bag type
dust causes worts? haha
oh yeah... my dust collector is nasty
they dont filter out the sub 30u stuff at all
and thats the most dangerous stuff
I find the 3 miron bags clog up too fast
worse ... they keep it going around and around in the shop air
can't use them
you use a cyclone first right?
I did...but unhooked it because of the pressure drop
one moment ..
I need to direct you to the web cyclone resources :)
but the filter box catches the dc stuff pretty well
yes a full cyclone works better
[16:56:04] <robin_sz> http://billpentz.com/woodworking/cyclone/index.cfm
I have a couple of those things that turn a trash bin into one
interesting site ... with some maths
big pressure drop
oh those ... they are nasty :)
yes...I have that site
and ... once you get a decent flow, they just blow all the small stuff out again
big problem is the router....the chips get slung out so fast that the vac doesn't capture them
I plan on building a cyclone for the poweder coat booth
* robin_sz nods
my plan for the router was to box it in, and go in with a shovel once in a while
I just need a use for cherry router chips
TONS of them
how big is this run?
well as things pick up I will be changing some tools
for dec and jan
on the list:
another cnc mill
wide belt sander?
big bucks there
i suspect you'll add most value to your product by the CNC stuff
the stuff other shops cant do
well I changed the tool path a bit when I added up the sanding labor
before it was 1 minute 45
added .01" cleanup passes for a better finish
I think that will be a good tradeoff
currently 27% of cost is sanding
sorry 27% of selling price
I think I can fudge costing out the cnc at $100/hr for internal stuff
at least for continuous production
$50 is a bit more real
a body is 0.16/minute
well...better get out to the shop now that my computer is about 1000% faster
* robin_sz was staring at photos
sometimes, even when the profit is less, its still worth having people do it
because you dont have to do it ...
and as usual most of the money goes back in the shop
I can do that since I owe nothing
have some lust for a new audi....
but will try to curb that
and the west coast stirs
another day of mr machinist ends...
was it fun?
making widgets on the boxford....well my feet are tired
I want to get the robotic testers outta here
and be mr woodworker a while
I try to not do more than 2 of anything by hand
I have a locla CNC lathe chap
I had to do 12 identical parts
if its more than 2, he gets to make at least 5 for me
add cnc lathe to the list of tooling I want
pity I gave two away
* robin_sz nods
but it would have meant a third trip from chicago moving
$1500 and two days of nasty truck rides over the mountains
surely you could have soild them in chicago and replaced with on etrhrere?
* paul_c enjoyed the road over the Smokies
no time...I was just overwhelmed with moving all that iron
paul...you wouldn't enjoy an overloaded truck on a 7% downgrade with over rev light AND brake overtemp light both on
7%? almost flat!
haha so I thought
the up part had dozens of 18 wheelers parked and cooling off the engines
the runaway ramps are scary looking too
* robin_sz invites les to drive up and down newgate bank outside whitby
overall 1:4, touches 1:3 in places
I might have been around there...but in a Rover
I mean honda
I thought you meant land rover
no rover sedan...it was a while ago
they still make em
they got bought by bmw
then sold for 1.00
then sold off the the management
like austin mini
1.00 was a bit expensive
well...like bmw...have one
a bit long in the tooth though
I am having bad audi TT ragtop thoughts though
must vanquish them
just ... butt ugly
I had an audi 100 before the bmw...it was much nicer but broke a lot initially
a freind of mne has a Skoda with an Audi TT engine .. as a works car
the hardtop is ugly....the rag looks better with the top down
bmw is a little too spartan inside
getting so old I actually rented a caddy northstar for a trip
im not even thinking about cars till I see some money :)
i'm gettin worried...
cause I liked it
it was on itw anyway
wait till summer and buy a bike!
im tryng to figure out how to get enough money to buy a pressbrake
naw really don't need cars...need tools more. anyway bought a truck last year
you know anything about pressbrakes?
sheet metal tool?
this is a hydraulic upstroking thing
yeah sheet metal
2 basic controls
I think we call that a shear here
thats a guillotine no?
ahh. no not a shear then
1 control sets the closing height
the other the max tonnage
i guess the tonnage is just a spring pressure relief valve
guess I don't know much about them
I don't have much sheet metal fab stuff
im guessing the closing height is some sort of hydraulic shuttle valve linked to the pressure beam
sounds like it
I was just wondering if that meant the height varied with oil temperature
what would you be fabricating with this?
and, if the metal was tougher, that would need more pressure, so maybe it wouldnt close so far?
parts for the plasma
I'd put a CNC backguage on it
and CNC the closing height
I was sort of wondering about using a encoder to sense the closing height
then I could sort of servo it
sure...hydraulics are servoed a lot
these things close real slow, it could be simple I guess
so you can get volts->valve opening blocks?
like a voltage controlled proportiannal vlave or summink?
yeah...but it might be more likely current controlled
ah it's so nice to have the computer responding quickly
ah your 64m wrapper is gone?
removed a video memory emulator that was using 99% of cpu
yeah, you said. nice.
this is 'doze right?
yeah doze...hate it but must use it
ha grandma cooked me up some dinner
she is soon turning 98
'nother cuple of years, and she'd get a telegram from the Queen.
well in england she would
hmm wonder if she would do that for the colonies
* robin_sz remembers Len Vale-Onslow
we are a bunch of normans and scots anyway haha
sadly, len died this year
[22:38:55] <robin_sz> http://www.vale-onslow.co.uk/LVO_1.htm
rode a bike at 102...wow
we have an active pilot here that is 99 or something
ISTR he got on OBE or some such at 100 and road to the palace from bham to collect it
i deserve a obe haha
my freinds father-in-law ditched with three mates off guernsey last year
in a 172
made the papers, as they were all over 80
actually, he was 79, just
now I remember
didnt put them off though
I was taught the thing won't float long
and land on top of a swell
tail donw and mush in
trouble with the sea is waves are at 90 deg to the wind
did a really dumb cherokee 6 ride from fla to eleuthra, bahamas once
uh huh ...
blue above , blue below
ifr really even in clear weather
and you had lifejackets and were ferrying raw steak?
ditch and you are dead...plane and emergency locator sinks
ferrying raw pretty girls as I recall
love bahamas but will never again do that ride in a single engine ac
* robin_sz makes note to attach the epirb to the life raft
my airbus 320 freind was telling me about single engine performance on those things ..
well first landfall is 75 miles out or so
still do a 20,000 foot ceiling on one engine
climb to 10,000 over the coast
first third you can glide back
last third you can glide to destination
middle third you are screwed
should still be able to get near land I guess
I think having engine failure once cured me of silly things like that
it's true...the purpose of the fan in front is to cool the pilot
really start sweating when irt stops
actually prop kept turning in my incedent
heh, thats not so good
stall the plane and it will stop though
they ruin the glide when turning
so instructor taught me hoe to stop it
did you remember to stop it?
no...no time...was 800 agl
remember to switch the mags off?
on the ground in 45 seconds
I didn't do anything
just flew the plane
freind of mine had an efato, forgot to kill the mags
put it nicely in a field just off the ned of the strip
I was in the pattern
then the engine blipped .. and put him stright between two trees, taking the wings off
oh right, you had a strip to land on :) thats cheating :)
just a 40 degree bank directly to the field and a no flaps landing
bob hovver would have been proud of you
40 gets you turned around the quickest with minimum altitude loss
* robin_sz notes that down
I have met hoover!!!
we were always told "NEVER TURNN BACK"
ooh, you ,lucky lucky ...
seen his 'engine off' demo?
I was midfield downwind
yeah...I met him at oskosh
ive seen his 'pouring tea' video a few times .. thats awesome
* robin_sz forgets what its really called
in the lear in a barrel roll?
thats the one
have seen it
never did it
lear is an amzingly agile plane
did lots of 0 g ellipses though
10-15 sec or so
I enjoyed showing my brother the pencil on the dashboard trick
zero g and try and catch it in your mouth
about attempt three he said something about 'sick' and 'do it agian I kill you'
I usually just put my clipboard in my lap
tried to keep it floating around my nose
it's a puker for sure
hate when that happens
i find it fine if I have my hand on the stick
right me too
it's kids that lose it
ooh, saw a nice boat opportunity
I will go over to my grandma's and pick up my dinner now
back in a while
[23:02:40] <robin_sz> http://www.boatquest.com/Sail/Stephens-Marine/Category/Length/2363/Feet/USD/1/boats.aspx
ach hes gone
fell bad though
was going to head down near there for jan and feb
too much work
my kids are there
back in a little while
they enjoyed the typhoons?
oh...they were devastated
trashed the place
insurance will pay?
had no power for...a month
no roof either
they upped and left
well..ex says she is moving up near here
so I guess
at the time they evacuated of course
they were right at the shore
so basically, its a full rebuild
yes big mess...I was planning on renting a houseboat to live on while down there
but the marina is GONE
oh well can't go anyway
better get to grandma's house...back in a while
still .. the building trade will do well
