[00:02:13] <jepler> I sort of suspect this is a race condition, but I'm still glad that dgarr spotted the bug I wrote wrt memory locking
[00:03:29] <jepler> for legacy reasons that I think aren't true any longer, halcmd (halcmd_systemv_nowait) temporarily shuts off its hal-component nature before starting a subprocess, then immediately recreates itself as a new component a moment later
[00:04:03] <jepler> the tests which look at component number assume that the hal_init of the newly loaded component and the hal_init of halcmd after it forks happen in a certain order
[00:04:14] <jepler> and many tests implicitly look at this because it is shown with e.g. 'halcmd show pin'
[00:07:53] <dgarr> but also latency is really bad on my jessie/uspace/64bit after commit 3d4fc3b
[00:10:32] -!- rob_h has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
[00:14:27] <dgarr> isnt the report "Note: Using POSIX non-realtime" a problem when configured with --with-realtime=uspace ?
[00:14:27] <dgarr>
[00:15:25] <jepler> yes you are right
[00:23:25] <KGB-linuxcnc> 03Jeff Epler 05master ce52ea1 06linuxcnc 10src/rtapi/uspace_rtapi_app.cc uspace: fix check for setuid nature of rtapi_app * 14http://git.linuxcnc.org/?p=linuxcnc.git;a=commitdiff;h=ce52ea1
[00:23:25] <KGB-linuxcnc> 03Jeff Epler 05master f059548 06linuxcnc 10src/rtapi/uspace_rtapi_app.cc uspace: use WITH_ROOT for rtapi_open_as_root * 14http://git.linuxcnc.org/?p=linuxcnc.git;a=commitdiff;h=f059548
[00:23:25] <KGB-linuxcnc> 03Jeff Epler 05master 9799ece 06linuxcnc 10src/rtapi/uspace_common.h uspace: use root in RTAPI shmem_new so shm can be locked * 14http://git.linuxcnc.org/?p=linuxcnc.git;a=commitdiff;h=9799ece
[00:23:30] <jepler> dgarr: thank you for your patience in this matter, and please let me know if this last push still doesn't resolve the problem for you
[00:28:54] <dgarr> with those commits, no problems -- latency restored, report is "using POSIX realtime", if there still potential for a race, the commit i posted addresses different comp_ids
[00:30:46] <jepler> oh yes I think that commit is a good idea
[00:30:55] <jepler> but I see now my fingers didn't tell you that
[00:33:10] <jepler> thanks
[00:33:16] <linuxcnc-build> build #66 of 1540.rip-jessie-armhf is complete: Failure [4failed compile] Build details are at http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/buildbot/builders/1540.rip-jessie-armhf/builds/66 blamelist: Jeff Epler <jepler@unpythonic.net>
[00:35:05] <jepler> > g++: internal compiler error: Killed (program cc1plus)
[00:35:32] <jepler> I think I'll have to try sending seb home with a different ARM builder board. I'll be taking a small boxful of the things, he can have his pick.
[00:36:57] <Roguish> jepler: quick simple question, please. sometimes linuxcnc crashes at startup and a process gets hung. how do I identify the process, and how do I kill it ???
[00:39:04] <jepler> we would prefer linuxcnc didn't crash :-P
[00:39:23] <jepler> if you are using a uspace realtime, then every process is visible in top and killable with kill or sudo kill
[00:39:47] <jepler> there are "mutexes" that sometimes need to be released manually, "halrun -U" does this
[00:40:22] <jepler> if you are aware of repeatable linuxcnc crashes that can be demonstrated without specific hardware, file issues on linuxcnc with instructions on how to reproduce.
[00:40:36] <jepler> if you are using rtai / kernel-based realtime, recovery is harder or impossible. sometimes rebooting is the only available option.
[00:43:19] <jepler> (it's best, in terms of recovering from problems, to develop non-driver components on uspace without "sudo make setuid" so that you never need sudo-steps to recover from problems; and for drivers, it's better to develop with uspace than rtai if you have the option)
[00:44:06] <jepler> you can see the linuxcnc script "Cleanup" section for another take on automatically cleaning up from a session that did not exit properly

[00:44:34] <jepler> Roguish: ^^ hope some of that brain dump helps, going afk
[00:44:51] <jepler> oh also be a 20+ year veteran of unix, that helps you figure stuff out
[00:55:20] <KGB-linuxcnc> 03Dewey Garrett 05master 964c0e4 06linuxcnc 10tests/twopass/b.hal 10tests/twopass/expected tests/twopass use script option for halcmd show * 14http://git.linuxcnc.org/?p=linuxcnc.git;a=commitdiff;h=964c0e4

[00:56:51] <Roguish> jepler: thanks. most of that makes sense. I will look into as mush as I can. thanks again.

[11:49:33] <jepler> yeah he is not very active in the project anymore (big understatement) but has always provided the hosting for the main website
[11:50:24] <jepler> I've texted him; if we don't hear from him, or he's unable to provide us free hosting anymore, cradek has a backup of the website and we'll work to get it back online soon with another hosting provider.
[11:53:46] <archivist> did they take the site down too? just wondering about pointing other dns at it
[11:54:57] <jepler> I know the A-records for linuxcnc.org and www.linuxcnc.org are gone, and that's really just about all I know.
[11:55:27] -!- kalxas has quit [Changing host]

[11:55:42] <jepler> DNS is at dreamhost, www.linuxcnc.org is at dreamhost, git.linuxcnc.org and forum.linuxcnc.org are hosted elsewhere.
[11:56:51] <archivist> I checked for the A records earlier
[11:57:21] <jepler> yeah, and they must still be cached for some people
[11:57:50] <jepler> like jt who saw "site not found - Dreamhost"
[11:58:00] <jepler> so yeah they "took the site down too"
[12:00:50] <archivist> a bit odd they left git and forum up dns up
[12:00:53] <jepler> OK, text from SWP, he will look into it this morning. I'll keep this channel updated if I hear from him
[12:01:05] <jepler> archivist: I agree, it may only be lucky coincidence for now

[12:02:28] <archivist> at least he is ok
[12:02:39] <jepler> I'll file that site away.
[12:02:42] <jepler> I use dig +trace -t a www.linuxcnc.org or similar
[12:03:30] <archivist> I use squshy because it is also external to me, I host my dns :)
[12:04:23] <jepler> yeah that can complicate things!
[12:05:21] <archivist> me and a few others are sharing the dns and spreading it about

[12:17:08] <jepler> the A record is starting to reappear, and now I can ssh in and verify that the contents are still there on dreamhost
[12:17:14] <jepler> so I think all will be well soon
[12:17:40] <jepler> but yes we have options
[12:18:18] -!- rob_h [rob_h!~R@97e4291b.skybroadband.com] has joined #linuxcnc-devel
[12:19:12] <jepler> the main problem of hosting is the amount of data in wlo. 34GB at the moment, of which 26GB is debian packaging and 5GB is iso images
[12:19:42] <jepler> 205M www.linuxcnc.org/dists/breezy
[12:25:12] <jepler> and now the website content is back for me.
[12:25:19] <archivist> time I had a tidy up my www is 252,575 items, totalling 59.4 GB
[12:25:59] <JT-Shop> I have unlimited disk space on webhost4life.com
[12:26:19] <jepler> the dreamhost account is paid up for another 3 years so let's not do anything right now
[12:26:28] <JT-Shop> yea
[12:26:29] <jepler> someone can mark now + 2.9 years on their calendar though!
[12:33:39] <JT-Shop> or maybe add more contacts to the account

[21:04:33] <andypugh> I have no idea what gi even is. Why do you say that?
[21:05:15] <andypugh> This is code running in Touchy, which imports pygtk
[21:06:11] <tinkerer> pygtk vs pygobject
[21:06:19] <andypugh> Maybe.
[21:06:23] <andypugh> But I don’t hink so
[21:06:46] <tinkerer> hink... nice freud ;)
[21:07:24] <andypugh> https://developer.gnome.org/pygobject/stable/class-gobject.html#method-gobject--emit
[21:07:46] <andypugh> That’s PyGTK and the “emit” function.
[21:08:12] <andypugh> “notify::visible” is a valid “detailed_signal” (after much googling)
[21:08:17] <tinkerer> no, PyGObject Class Reference
[21:08:32] <andypugh> But it needs a single patrameter of type “GParam”
[21:09:05] <andypugh> Errrrr
[21:09:13] <tinkerer> look at my calculator example: https://github.com/tinkercnc/gladvcp-test/blob/master/newcalculatorglade.py
[21:09:54] <tinkerer> I think, now you understand this example
[21:10:07] <andypugh> Yes, but it doesn’t work
[21:10:29] <tinkerer> tell me the error msg
[21:10:33] <tinkerer> please
[21:10:49] <tinkerer> run it standalone
[21:12:03] <andypugh> I have concluded that I need Touchy to send a signal to GladeVCP when the tab is deselcted
[21:12:11] <tinkerer> the prob is, we should port the lcnc gladevcp to gtk3 (PyGObject)
[21:12:28] <andypugh> And I am working on the syntax for that signal.
[21:12:44] <tinkerer> yes I know
[21:13:12] <tinkerer> and as I can see, very pragmatic... ;)
[21:14:51] <andypugh> Not really, if I was pragmatic I would send a HAL signal out of Touchy that indicates the current tab, and conect that to to a HAL pin created by my handler code. That would actually work.
[21:16:35] <andypugh> But I can’t help feeling that passing events beween the layers ought to be the right way to do it.
[21:17:07] <tinkerer> sure

[21:19:09] <tinkerer> but a better understanding of gladevcp in lcnc is necessary

[21:20:19] <tinkerer> and I'm no gui developer. just curious.
[21:20:26] <andypugh> That may be true. But for the moment I would be satisfied to know what this error message means:
[21:20:26] <andypugh> TypeError: could not convert type VisibilityState to GParam required for parameter 0
[21:21:37] <andypugh> (If I don’t have the parameter, it complains it needs one, if it is anything but this mythical “GParam” then it gives a TypeError.
[21:22:32] <andypugh> There are functions that return a GParam, I am even considering using one of those

[22:24:02] <tinkerer> andypugh: when I have more time I will dig into, but at the moment the "serious" job has priority.
[22:24:35] <andypugh> Yeah, I have transferred to writing a HAL component myself for someone.
[22:25:01] <tinkerer> link?
[22:27:15] <tinkerer> you are stingy with your findings ;)
[22:31:50] <andypugh> Hmm?
[22:32:04] <andypugh> The HAL component is entirely unrealted
[22:32:17] <andypugh> It’s to control a 16-speed gearbox

[22:36:42] <andypugh> Otherwise, I have made almost no progress, other than proving that you can use plug.get_socket_window() and socket.get_plug_window() and compare xids to find that the object you find looking inside the Touchy socket is the GladeVCP Plug, and similarly between the GladeVCP socket and the embedded tab toplevel Plug.
[22:39:43] <andypugh> The correct solution probably involves sub-classing things all over the place and defining custom signals, but I wanted a lighter touch than that.
[22:40:38] <tinkerer> btw: do you have the schematics of the lost pcb?
[22:41:19] <tinkerer> yes a lighter way is desirable
[22:41:59] <andypugh> Lost PCB?
[22:42:13] <tinkerer> you sent me
[22:44:37] <tinkerer> or you have tried to send
[22:44:39] <andypugh> RPi interfce?
[22:44:43] <tinkerer> yep
[22:44:52] <andypugh> I don’t think so.
[22:45:28] <tinkerer> or the layout
[22:52:18] <andypugh> No, I don’t think so. It was all on a Windows VM and I think I lost it
[22:52:47] <andypugh> There is a small chance it might exist on the PC at work.
