[02:07:11] <cradek> kirk_wallace: wow, thanks for sharing - I wouldn't have wanted to miss that
[02:07:41] <cradek> can you make it ... not?
[02:09:30] <seb_kuzminsky> can you make it... more?
[02:10:00] <cradek> that would be so distracting at night
[02:10:17] <seb_kuzminsky> unn-tzz unn-tzz unn-tzz
[02:10:37] <cradek> https://www.techopedia.com/definition/6724/dancing-baloney
[02:10:43] <cradek> it's not just for webpages anymore!
[02:11:58] -!- Tom_L [Tom_L!~Tom@unaffiliated/toml/x-013812] has joined #linuxcnc-devel
[02:12:23] <kirk_wallace> There doesn't seem to be any reason for the noise. I have considered pulling the traces that go to useless bit of the LCD.
[02:13:06] <cradek> I've famously silenced a microwave beeper with my sidecutters of destruction
[02:13:26] <cradek> it's nice to modify things to be less obnoxious
[02:16:53] -!- skunksleep [skunksleep!~AndChat14@str-broadband-ccmts-ws-26.dsl.airstreamcomm.net] has joined #linuxcnc-devel
[02:17:29] -!- Tom_L has quit [Quit: Quit]
[02:18:58] <skunksleep> I unhooked the beeper in my work volt meter. It would beep every time the auto-ranging changed range. The only downfall was I lost the audible continuity tester
[02:19:16] <cradek> if only it were open source
[02:19:50] <cradek> gosh wouldn't it be awesome to be able to fix all the electronic things around you to not suck
[02:20:09] <kirk_wallace> It is nice to have music again, but the speaker cones are warped and the foam surrounds have rotted away. I have a pair of woofers and tweeters on order. I would like to build some crossovers, but this project has turned into a big time sink. It is fun though.
[02:26:33] <cradek> fixing outright breakage on a car is only mildly bothersome, but trying to battle all the rot that comes with old age is really no fun
[02:29:03] <Tom_itx> i think andy thrives on that
[02:29:27] <cradek> yeah, he seems to!

[15:31:57] <cradek> don't resolvers often have several/many full electrical cycles per physical turn?
[15:35:25] <pcw_home> they often do for higher resolution and also ones used to commutate 4-8 pole AC servos
[15:37:05] <cradek> that could sure give you more indexes than you expect, if the converter works like the pico ones I have
[15:40:11] <jepler> some days I wonder if we should kill the use of index
[15:40:16] <jepler> for threading
[15:40:16] <pcw_home> Yeah, though the offsets would be noticeably quantized if you checked
[15:40:18] <pcw_home> it looks like Marius's problem is that index is just not seen sometimes, but its hard to tell
[15:40:45] <jepler> it was very important before double-precision hal floats, because you could easily get into the range where spindle positions were very quantized
[15:43:55] <pcw_home> index on threading is needed for "A" only threading (as JMK reminded me)
[15:43:56] <pcw_home> and of course the thread start is volatile without a physical index (probably not important)
[15:46:33] -!- Daerist has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[15:53:55] <seb_kuzminsky> not important right now, but will/would be for peck tapping
[15:54:40] <seb_kuzminsky> http://www.helmancnc.com/fanuc-g84-rigid-peck-tapping-cycle/
[15:56:16] <skunkworks> I think it certainly be an option - but allowing threading without an index would be a nice addition..
[15:57:17] <jepler> you might still find the index once ('spindle homing' a la andypugh's idea) but after that you can just use a modulo operation to know the spindle angle
[15:59:52] <cradek> I assume we'd keep spindle-revs as is (increases by 1.0 for each full turn in M3 direction)
[16:00:13] <cradek> you'd code in the assumption that you could start a threading pass at any xxx.0 position
[16:00:52] <cradek> if your encoder works perfectly AND you home it yourself by setting index-enable, that would give the same behavior as today
[16:01:38] <jepler> yes that's essentially what I'm saying
[16:02:07] <jepler> and if you have 4 index pulses per spindle rev, or 3.5, or 100/25.4, you can do better than you can today at threading
[16:02:21] <jepler> because it involves just setting your scale right, not changing you hardware until you have one index-pulse per revolution
[16:02:23] <cradek> yes that's true
[16:02:42] <jepler> granted, you'll have 4, or 7, or ??? different possible thread starting points *over power cycles* / spindle homing cycles..
[16:03:17] <cradek> I think that is rarely important
[16:03:29] <cradek> if it was important to you, you could just fix your hardware
[16:04:02] <skunkworks> if you setup spindle homing like an axis - you could have a switch then that could find the next index
[16:04:56] <skunkworks> *like homing to index - you would then find the 'right' index each time
[16:05:12] <skunkworks> ie a prox sensor that would get you close
[16:06:59] <jepler> of course in my scheme, you have a scale that is not a "nice" number (that you are likely to write as an exact decimal) then that inaccuracy is compounded as the spindle turns increase
[16:12:00] <jepler> (for instance, if you have 1000/3 CPR and set position-scale to 333.33, then you accumulate an error of 1 revolution every 100,000 revolutions)
[16:12:12] <jepler> that accumulating error also gets cleared out by using the index pulse
[16:12:34] <jepler> except for how it would be tricky to make the index pulse come exactly once every 1000/3 cycles
[16:13:10] <jepler> .. put the AB encoder on the motor and the Z (only) on the spindle? crazy.
[16:22:04] -!- kalxas has quit [Ping timeout: 268 seconds]
[16:22:12] <pcw_home> If you have an index its going to be more robust,
[16:22:14] <pcw_home> but it does seem a simulated index in the encoder comp
[16:22:15] <pcw_home> would simplify hardware on a fair number of systems
