[16:31:26] <mozmck> I'm having a strange problem where halui.estop.is-activated seems to not be working on 32-bit installs, but it works on my 64 bit systems.
[16:32:11] <mozmck> As far as I can see so far everything else is equal.
[16:32:13] <cradek> oof

[16:34:00] <jepler> Linux rat 3.4-9-rtai-686-pae #1 SMP PREEMPT Debian 3.4.55-4linuxcnc i686 GNU/Linux
[16:34:07] <jepler> I have this machine handy, how can I reproduce the problem with a sim config?
[16:34:24] -!- skunkworks has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[16:34:29] <mozmck> hmm, I will have to try and narrow it down.
[16:34:51] -!- tocka has quit [Client Quit]
[16:35:19] <mozmck> I'm using preempt-rt and xubuntu 14.04 for 32 bit, but the 64-bit systems I've tested on are linux mint 17

[16:37:31] <jepler> also preempt-rt ?
[16:42:35] <mozmck> Hmm, no, the 64-bit have been sim configs so far.
[16:42:57] -!- __rob has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]
[16:43:53] <mozmck> Maybe I should make sure my gui is actually putting linuxcnc in estop. I have a single button for estop/estop reset and machine power.
[16:44:53] <cradek> yeah my step 1 is always try [whatever] with sim/axis
[16:45:31] <mozmck> yes, I need to test more. thanks for the tips/questions.
[16:46:30] <jepler> running tklinuxcnc because I am remote from that machine, but after adding HALUI=halui in tklinuxcnc.ini and immediately after start I see this in halcmd show
[16:46:33] <jepler> 7 bit OUT TRUE halui.estop.is-activated
[16:47:06] <jepler> and it behaves as expected when entering/leaving estop with F1
[16:47:29] <seb_kuzminsky> jepler: what, not keystick?
[16:47:59] <jepler> I'm happy to test further, but I'll wait until the how to reproduce doesn't need a UI I don't have
[16:48:05] <jepler> seb_kuzminsky: silly me
[16:48:05] <cradek> we should've renamed that one "blue" while we had the chance
[16:49:17] <jepler> opportunity missed
[17:01:56] <jepler> having a more powerful laser on a better frame sure sounds like fun, but doing proper laser safety sounds boring and tedious. (seems like good practice envolves a full enclosure with a window made of $100+/ft2 optical filter material)
[17:14:38] <seb_kuzminsky> how about an opaque enclosure with a $5 webcam in in?
[17:16:54] <pcw_home> or something like a dust boot that limits the exit angle of reflections so a low shield is all these needed
[17:17:06] <pcw_home> all thats needed
[17:17:56] <ssi> fwiw, and I know my opinion on the matter is somewhat compromised given my experience, the need for a full enclosure is pretty overstated
[17:18:10] <ssi> I had no problems with reflections or lack of beam containment
[17:18:13] -!- per_sonne__ has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[17:19:30] <pcw_home> Are you going to build another one?
[17:19:34] <ssi> and if you do choose to enclose, you don't need expensive filter material, you can use lexan. The lexan will char and bubble if it takes a high energy hit, but that's enough to a) stop the beam and b) let you know that you have a beam issue
[17:19:38] <ssi> pcw_home: certainly
[17:20:13] <ssi> I just can't decide how I want to do my motion platform yet
[17:20:22] <ssi> the one thing that I really wish I'd had was more Z focal range
[17:20:27] <ssi> most machines do that with a drop bed
[17:20:31] <ssi> which is cumbersome to build
[17:20:34] <pcw_home> Lexan will char with 10.4 u not 5W Blue LED
[17:20:58] <ssi> well I assumed what he meant by "more powerful laser" was CO2
[17:21:11] <ssi> since that's the best bang for the buck for the DIY budget
[17:21:43] <pcw_home> I think Jepler is starting at 200 mW so almost anything is more powerful
[17:21:45] <ssi> and you can SEE the blue laser, not so much the 10,4
[17:22:16] <pcw_home> Yeah
[17:24:31] <ssi> and I think 40W chinese co2 lasers are actually cheaper than 5W diodes
[17:24:37] <ssi> even with the power supply
[17:25:16] <ssi> http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/High-power-red-diode-laser-635nm_60119435996.html?spm=a2700.7724857.35.1.RzpGfJ&s=p
[17:25:19] <ssi> maybe not! dahahah
[17:26:17] <ssi> jepler: also, you can get away with just buying some good laser glasses
[17:26:30] <ssi> eyes are the only real concern imo
[17:26:42] <ssi> I took an 80w unfocused shot to the hand, and it's like a bee sting
[17:26:48] <ssi> no worse than catching a hot aluminum chip off the mill
[17:39:41] <cradek> yes he uses some goggles
[17:39:46] <cradek> it's sure nice that it's visible
[17:40:41] <cradek> I'm surprised lexan = polycarbonate is any use, because it's clear to blue light
[17:42:16] <cradek> https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:VisibleLightSpectrum2.svg#/media/File:VisibleLightSpectrum2.svg
[17:43:06] <cradek> or is most of the power of jepler's blue laser below blue?
[17:46:49] <pcw_home> Lexan is good for CO2 since it absorbs infrared, not much use for blue
[17:47:35] <cradek> it looks like it has a very sharp and useful cutoff

[17:49:26] <cradek> that plot makes it look like 390-400

[18:01:44] <ssi> I wonder what lasers would be ideal for that

[18:11:36] <skunkworks> we were told with our 1000w co2 laser - as long as we had plastic lenses/saftey glasses we where ok. no enclosure.
[18:12:37] <skunkworks> is there a rt_preempt for 10.04 in the repository?
[18:12:46] <cradek> surely it depends which plastic
[18:12:52] <ssi> cradek: not that much really
[18:13:02] <ssi> almost everything is opaque to 10,6um
[18:13:05] <cradek> I bet safety glasses are universally polycarbonate but eyeglasses are not
[18:13:08] <cradek> ah
[18:13:21] <jepler> I don't think the seller made any claims about wavelength. visually it's blue, but I don't know which blue
[18:13:22] <ssi> except ZnSe and salt crystal :P
[18:13:50] <jepler> of course who knows if the eye protection that came with this thing is adequate. it's all from china and everything else seems to be counterfeit.

[18:15:09] <ssi> I bought some $40 phillips 10,6um laser goggles
[18:15:10] <jepler> (and the laser's claimed power is 300mW)
[18:15:42] <jepler> but for instance I was thinking about a 5W 445nm laser that pcw linked to recently, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Engraving-laser-head-445nm-5W-43mm-CNC-laser-diode-/231584079211
[18:16:25] <jepler> to put on my existing (but not currently operational) mill
[18:17:14] <jepler> but you can also get an entire "40W" water-cooled enclosed CO2 laser engraver for $400, then $100-200 to retrofit to linuxcnc
[18:17:49] -!- Demiurge has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[18:22:38] <PCW> I wonder how fast you can modulate the cheap CO2 lasers/power supplies
[18:27:14] <jepler> I have no idea. The version I've seen has a knob to set beam intensity and an ammeter to show it
[18:28:21] <jepler> >> LAOS main board uses optocouplers for laser control (if you don't use the transistor output). In a lot of config files I found that PWM frequency is set to 1KHz.
[18:28:24] <jepler> In my system the frequency from power control panel was 21KHz. But this is a little fast for the optocouplers. The ground level get weak even with a pull-up of >470Ohm.
