[13:00:18] <skunkworks> I chatted with the one of the main authors of PathPilot today. What PathPilot is doing is normal. My toolpath generator does not do G93 at this time. So, G94 does not translate linear and rotational movement well in a single block. I am going to talk to the company tomorrow about the issue. It appears PathPilot is working correctly at this point.
[13:05:30] -!- anomynous has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
[13:09:29] <jepler> hm, it looks like linuxcnc's documentation for G94 may have been simplified too much and no longer really says what happens
[13:09:37] <jepler> http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/gcode/gcode.html#sec:G93-G94-G95-Mode
[13:10:32] <jepler> hm, I swear it used to be very specific, but even the 2.2 docs look substantially like what is there now
[13:12:12] <jepler> (if any of XYZ move, then the F number is applied to the coordinated XYZ motion; otherwise, if any of ABC are moving, the F number is applied to the coordinated ABC motion; otherwise, UVW must be moving and the F-number is applied to the coordinated UVW motion)
[13:14:36] <cradek> http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/gcode/machining-center.html#sub:feed-rate
[13:15:57] <jepler> hm I got it wrong
[13:17:09] <jepler> skunkworks: anyway if a behavior is pathpilot specific it's a safe bet that I don't want to hear about it. :-P
[13:17:24] <cradek> skunkworks: does that mean their gui's F readout does something unexpected but the motion is as documented? I can't tell what he means.
[13:17:42] <cradek> (I bet the motion is right)
[13:17:59] <skunkworks> I don't know either. (I just wanted to make sure that linuxcnc doesn't have an issue.)
[13:18:10] <cradek> yeah, me too, and thanks
[13:18:30] <skunkworks> I have run a lot of constraint tests - but not many - 'is it going the right feed rate'
[13:18:46] <cradek> yeah, especially those combined moves
[13:19:09] -!- shurshur has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
[13:19:13] <jepler> seb_kuzminsky: it looks like the "right way" to do the inb/outb is via read() and write() to the appropriate /sys/.../resourceN file of the PCI device
[13:19:32] <cradek> and although it uses the old planner still for those, all of the code feeding it (deciding things like feed) was disturbed
[13:20:08] <cradek> so it's entirely possible there's a regression
[13:21:10] <jepler> this probably doesn't have great performance, but in hm2_pci it's a startup-only activity
[13:21:23] <skunkworks> The bits of mdi moves I have been doing seem to work as expected
[13:28:20] -!- anomynous_ has quit [Ping timeout: 244 seconds]
[13:39:41] <seb_kuzminsky> hm2_pci's main read() and write() functions do mmio on the pci bars
[13:40:06] <seb_kuzminsky> seems easy enough to teach the fpga programming code to do the same (by mmapping the right file in /sys, as you say, for uspace)
[13:46:49] -!- anomynous has quit [Ping timeout: 265 seconds]
[13:51:46] -!- Daerist has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[13:52:09] <jepler> yes I'm thinking in a uspace-centric way
[13:52:33] <cradek> skunkworks: thanks for testing it
[13:53:33] <skunkworks> I was thinking that I could just copy the lines from his program on youtube but the second he clicks cycle start the program is instantly at lin n55670...
[13:54:08] <cradek> in my opinion, transcribing gcode from a youtube video is unnecessarily heroic
[13:54:35] <skunkworks> heh
[13:55:01] <cradek> especially if there are 55669 unknown lines above it
[13:55:19] <skunkworks> I think it counts by 10.. ;)

[18:12:26] <jepler> the question of what to do with home icons in the context of ja is a complicated one

[18:13:00] <cradek> don't show them except in joint mode
[18:13:02] <cradek> ?
[18:13:14] <jepler> for nontrivkins? maybe.
[18:13:32] <jepler> except aren't they making everything nontrivkins to support gaps in the axis numbers?
[18:14:31] <cradek> umm I don't know exactly what trivkins means now
[18:15:03] <cradek> 0->X 1->Z may or may not be possible with KINEMATICS_NONE or however it's spelled
[18:15:44] <cradek> unfortunately I don't know what the original design was, or if there really was one
[18:16:39] <jepler> besides looking at the kinematics type, UI would need a way to retrieve the 0<->X 1<->Z mapping from task
[18:16:46] <cradek> gentrivkins is KINEMATICS_IDENTITY
[18:21:51] <micges> gentrivkins idea was to be unable to jog single joint on gantry
[18:22:27] <jepler> what kinematics module does a lathe use now in ja, to make the Z axis be joint 1?
[18:22:30] <micges> with XYYZ mapping and KIN IDENTITY it's just trivkins with axis mapped to two joints nothing more
[18:24:39] <micges> it should be gentrivkins

[18:32:37] <jepler> what *axes* should the GUI show as homed?
[18:32:48] <jepler> As I understand it, this is not enough information to answer the question
[18:33:36] <jepler> so sub-question: where in the stat buffer does the UI look for the additional required information?
[18:36:57] <jepler> and actually I'm surprised by this result when running configs/sim/axis/lathe.ini in branch dgarr/ja_configs, because I thought lathes were now going to have 0=X 1=Z, but it looks like I have 0=X 2=Z
[18:37:06] <cradek> I have a suggestion: The axis display should show whether or not the joints are ALL homed since that is the what controls important behavior, such as whether gcode can be run
[18:37:15] <jepler> and I can't actually run gcode, because after home all it still says "Can't issue MDI command when not homed"
[18:37:42] <cradek> ... and the joint display should obviously show individual joints as being homed or not
[18:38:12] <archivist> but but but I have multiple Xs on my sliding head lathe
[18:38:34] <cradek> I think knowing [the joint corresponding to] X is homed and [the joint corresponding to] Y is not tells you nothing important
[18:39:02] <jepler> cradek: if your homing procedure is not "press home-all" then it is important
[18:39:03] <cradek> archivist: yes and the joint display would show which of those two joints are homed
[18:39:38] <jepler> or would you have to enter joint mode on your trivkins machine (which you can't do now) to see this info?
[18:39:39] <cradek> jepler: oh you're picturing no switch into joint mode for trivkins homing, I see
[18:40:00] <jepler> cradek: there's not in 2.7, I don't see why we should force people with trivkins machine to learn about joint mode
[18:40:05] <cradek> jepler: I don't know (as I said, I think there is no design)
[18:40:09] <cradek> you're probably right
[18:40:15] <archivist> two? I have 4 X slides http://www.collection.archivist.info/archive/DJCPD/PD/2012/2012_08_31_Bechler_N.EA/IMG_1338.JPG

[18:41:41] <archivist> one pair of tools is on a rocker, so the 5th is inverted 4th
[18:42:02] <jepler> dgarr: in branch dgarr/ja_configs I can't run gcode on configs/sim/axis/lathe.ini because it thinks not all joints are homed
[18:42:08] <cradek> with trivkins why is it important to you to have Z<->1 instead of Z<->2?
[18:43:14] <jepler> cradek: I thought somebody identified "joint number gaps" as a *cause* of problems with non-consecutive axis configurations in ja
[18:43:26] <jepler> and planned to *fix* it by requiring joint numbers to be consecutive
[18:43:38] <jepler> but it's quite possible that I misunderstood the discussion and that was not the result
[18:43:49] <cradek> oh ok
[18:43:52] <cradek> I also don't know
[18:44:07] <jepler> but an XYYZ gantry is another example where it's KINEMATICS_IDENTITY but it's not clear how to show axis home indicators

[18:44:51] <cradek> true
[18:44:56] <micges> most of jax setups are on some kind of gantry
[18:45:09] <micges> all my setups (~20) are
[18:46:10] -!- md-2 has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[18:46:23] <micges> correct homing indication is ignored atm but you can't destroy machine by jogging
[18:46:58] <jepler> OK, if correct homing indicators are not possible that's one that needs to go on the list of regressions that occur if we merge ja
[18:47:00] <micges> so if non-consecutive joints are best choice for lathe and such so be it
[18:47:46] <mozmck> our setups are almost all gantry, and that will be in the hundreds pretty quickly I think.

[18:48:22] <mozmck> micges: are you using ja for your gantry setups?
[18:48:37] <micges> yes
[18:48:52] <micges> around ja3~ja4 with some fixes
[18:48:58] <mozmck> Do you have two home switches on the gantry?
[18:49:03] <micges> yes
[18:49:33] -!- patrickarlt has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
[18:49:40] <mozmck> So does that work well? Do you have problems with it staying in joint mode after homing like I've heard about?
[18:50:02] <micges> I just home all, no single homing avail
[18:50:56] <mozmck> So it does not go into joint mode to home?
[18:51:24] <jepler> it looks like there is no docs written in the ja8 branch except a manpage for lineardeltakins
