[03:32:06] <cradek> nope
[03:32:11] <cradek> and he didn't read the docs
[03:34:04] <cradek> > Please quote the section of the GPL that states this
[03:34:11] <cradek> heh
[03:35:49] <skunksleep> Saw that
[03:35:54] <cradek> the GPL is made up of words that have meanings, not feelings
[03:36:28] <Tom_itx> somebody get their toes stepped on?
[03:37:24] <cradek> nah, there's just a thread with more noise than signal
[03:37:46] <cradek> ob. https://xkcd.com/386/
[03:38:13] -!- FreezingCold has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
[03:39:30] <Tom_itx> PCW your generosity of 'samples' is apprecitated but it cost me a asrock board case & memory to test it...
[03:39:52] <seb_kuzminsky> the motion described by the g33.1 docs sounds really safe
[03:40:40] <skunksleep> seb_kuzminsky: yes. Never had an issue
[03:42:37] <adam3999_> hey tom did you end up getting an asrock j1900 motherboard?
[03:42:42] <Tom_itx> yup
[03:43:03] <adam3999_> which model?
[03:43:41] -!- Tom_L [Tom_L!~Tl@unaffiliated/toml/x-013812] has joined #linuxcnc-devel
[03:43:49] <Tom_L> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157565
[03:44:00] <Tom_itx> ^^
[03:45:02] <adam3999_> gotcha, i have the Q1900M which is damn close except mine doesn't have the lpt port in the atx back panel
[03:45:18] <adam3999_> PCW tested a few J1800/1900 motherboards yesterday and confirmed that his lpt inputs are fine
[03:45:27] <adam3999_> i'm still troubleshooting why mine don't work
[03:45:47] <Tom_itx> yeah i noticed, that's why i went ahead and pulled the trigger
[03:46:07] <Tom_itx> either way, i can use it
[03:46:37] <adam3999_> are you going with a mesa card or similar?
[03:46:58] <Tom_itx> i use mesa
[03:47:03] <Tom_itx> already
[03:47:06] <adam3999_> gotcha
[03:47:29] <adam3999_> if you have a few min, i'd be interested to see if your motherboard lpt inputs work as expected
[03:47:30] <Tom_itx> the 7i90 is in the control right now
[03:47:41] <Tom_itx> i've got a 7i24 to test in this new box
[03:48:05] <adam3999_> i can get mine to work with a separate parallel port testing app but not with the hal-driven ptest application
[03:48:08] <Tom_itx> 7i90 is parport
[03:48:25] <Tom_itx> i've never used that
[03:48:44] <adam3999_> just a simple tool for parport troubleshooting
[03:48:44] <adam3999_> http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Parallel_Port_Tester
[03:49:03] <adam3999_> i used this when i started troubleshooting to try and isolate where my issue was
[03:49:19] <adam3999_> if i run that tool and short any of the input pins (such as pin 10) to ground, no joy
[03:49:34] <adam3999_> but its fine with a separate utility that doesn't rely on hal
[03:50:12] <Tom_L> http://tom-itx.ddns01.com:81/~webpage/temp/parport/parport.mp4
[03:50:20] <Tom_L> i had a c program that did that to test io
[03:50:33] <Tom_L> i'm not sure where it is now...
[03:51:23] <adam3999_> yeah i saw a few programs on the web for running that type of test
[03:51:29] <adam3999_> my outputs are fine though
[03:51:34] <adam3999_> i've been milling already
[03:51:37] <Tom_L> that doesn't test input though
[03:51:38] <adam3999_> no inputs, unfortunately
[03:51:56] <adam3999_> getting fed up with manually homing :)
[03:52:25] <Tom_L> send it home before you shut down
[03:53:39] <adam3999_> just got the mill converted so i'm playing around with things still
[03:54:37] <Tom_L> does that parport tester just read the registers?
[03:55:52] <adam3999_> not sure
[03:56:10] <adam3999_> i can measure 3.3V on the output pins when i enable them
[03:56:11] <Tom_L> or do you need buttons attached to the cable
[03:56:25] <adam3999_> i used a multimeter on the outputs like pins 2,3
[03:56:45] <adam3999_> and then shorted pin 10 and 15 to ground as a test for the input, as well as using the e-stop and limit switches through my MX3660
[03:56:56] <Tom_L> do you need pull up/down on the inputs?
[03:57:13] <adam3999_> i don't believe so, but not 100%
[03:57:21] <adam3999_> shorting the pin straight to ground with that app worked on my laptop
[03:57:34] <Tom_L> you might check on that
[03:57:48] <adam3999_> i can also see the input pins change state when i use my limit switches and e-stop via the MX3660 and the other parallel port app
[03:58:02] <adam3999_> http://yyao.ca/projects/ParallelPortLinux/
[03:58:19] <adam3999_> that reports pins 10 and 15 correctly when i engage them via the MX3660 or just shorting them
[03:58:35] <adam3999_> but ptest that runs through HAL and the realtime stuff doesn't
[03:58:55] <adam3999_> obviously neither does linuxcnc/halscope
[04:00:18] <Tom_L> acording to that link 10 & 15 are active low inputs
[04:00:32] <Tom_L> 11 12 13 aren't
[04:01:01] <adam3999_> makes sense, i see green lights when i run the ptest app, and then they go red when you short them
[04:01:23] <adam3999_> on my laptop... when i run ptest on my Q1900, all red
[04:01:55] <adam3999_> can't get them to change states... tried the original BIOS, new 1.50 BIOS, normal/epp 1.7/epp 1.7/bidirectional parallel port setting
[04:02:20] <adam3999_> live iso linuxcnc 2.6, 2.8-pre from the dev repo
[04:02:39] <adam3999_> default 0x378 addr, bios hard coding the lpt port to 0x278
[04:02:50] <adam3999_> no joy thus far :)
[04:03:37] <adam3999_> sorry that previous line should say that i tried the parport in normal, epp 1.7, epp 1.9 and bidirectional modes
[04:04:32] <Tom_L> what's the difference between 1.7 & 1.9?
[04:04:43] <Tom_L> besides .2 :D
[04:04:52] <adam3999_> not sure, different spec for the parallel port mode
[04:05:04] -!- swingley has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[04:05:06] <adam3999_> it was one of four options i cycled through to see if any of them would behave differently
[04:05:08] <Tom_L> pretty sure you want epp mode
[04:05:14] <adam3999_> yep
[04:05:27] <adam3999_> i started with epp 1.9 and all the power saving modes disabled
[04:05:35] <adam3999_> the asrock bios is pretty nice
[04:05:37] -!- jvrousseau has quit [Quit: My Mac has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
[04:05:40] <adam3999_> latency is very low
[04:05:47] <adam3999_> was not expecting to have this input issue heh...
[04:06:22] <adam3999_> micges found a thread on another forum that references the same issue, but no resolution
[04:06:30] <adam3999_> and PCW was kind enough to try some of his boards, but no resolution yet
[04:06:48] <Tom_L> i can try it when the junk gets here
[04:06:55] <adam3999_> thanks, appreciate that
[04:07:13] <Tom_L> you might have to remind me
[04:07:15] <adam3999_> i need to post on the forum to capture my environment and what i've tested so far, perhaps reach a larger audience
[04:07:25] -!- patrickarlt has quit [Ping timeout: 265 seconds]
[04:07:29] <adam3999_> no prob, i imagine i'll be hanging out here until i get it fixed

[15:36:45] <skunkworks> ^ a thought...
[15:38:12] <pcw_home> yeah posting the hal/ini files might help also
[15:39:28] <skunkworks> eh - probably not.. The itx version has a physical printer port...
[15:39:38] <skunkworks> (which seems to have the same problem)
[15:40:50] <pcw_home> I have a Asrock miniitx MB and its PP works
[15:41:19] <pcw_home> I dont have the 1900M pro though
[15:41:44] <mozmck> Is there a config option to make axis not prompt every time you exit?
[15:42:04] <pcw_home> Isn't that a new feature

[15:47:16] <pcw_home> Yeah I probably should have resisted posting
[15:48:07] <cradek> the gpl2 is about one page. I can't imagine ranting about it in a public forum without even reading it first.
[15:49:14] <cradek> I suppose people are used to inscrutable license agreements like EULAs you click through while shrugging
[15:49:35] <cradek> I suppose they think they know what's in those, based only on their feelings, too
[15:50:02] <pcw_home> Yeah (Ive done that as well)
[15:54:02] <pcw_home> If I understand it correctly, Tormach is obliged to provide source to their users but not

[15:54:05] <pcw_home> they have fulfilled their obligations
[15:54:53] <cradek> to be more specific: anyone they distribute binaries to
[15:55:47] <pcw_home> Yes, but they are not obliged to distribute binaries to the public
[15:55:56] <cradek> no, certainly not
[15:56:12] <cradek> they can distribute to whoever they want

[15:56:54] <cradek> as soon as they do that, they have to give the source to that person too (or just offer it, there are several ways)
[15:57:34] <cradek> but I bet you know this because you've read the gpl2 and the faq :-)
[15:57:42] <pcw_home> Nor can they restrict re-distribution (AFAIK)

[17:10:50] <CaptHindsight> is it possible to hard code accel and speed limits to an axis after the customer discovers how to modify them?
[17:11:46] <seb_kuzminsky> CaptHindsight: linuxcnc gets vel & accel from the ini file, or choose which ini file linuxcnc reads, controls the vel & accel
[17:11:55] <seb_kuzminsky> also: your question worries me
[17:11:58] <CaptHindsight> also, rather than not crashing the machine, the customer now wants extra actuators and parts so that they can replace them :)
[17:12:31] <CaptHindsight> seb_kuzminsky: yes, I'll set limits in the ini, they make changes, break something and then play dumb
[17:12:46] <cradek> this is not a software problem

[17:14:30] <archivist> CaptHindsight, a checksum on the ini files for your protection
[17:15:37] <CaptHindsight> they changed the accel and max speed and stripped the lead screw this time
[17:16:10] <CaptHindsight> last time they snapped the coupling between the stepper and screw shaft
[17:16:21] <seb_kuzminsky> if i was selling a preconfigured machine, i would put the machine config in a debian package, maybe next to our sample configs
[17:16:43] <seb_kuzminsky> then you can use debsums to verify that the files are unchanged

[17:23:11] <skunkworks> cradek, rob figured out the tapping issue. says says he mistakenly made a function return an int instead of a double.. (that actuall makes sense to me with the way it failed...)
