[17:40:01] <wortley> I have failed to allocate memory by way of a component variable and passing a pointer, but I could have done something bad to the pointer and that could have caused my kernel panic. I have been encouraged to try using hal_ring.h as a means of passing data between my components.

[19:23:39] <seb_kuzminsky> wortley: yes, the rtai kernel is 32-bit only
[19:24:04] <seb_kuzminsky> the rt-preempt kernel in debian (supported by the linuxcnc-uspace flavor) is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit
[19:24:36] <wortley> seb_kuzminsky: Thank you. So I should be thinking about 64 bits when I write things, but it probably isn't needed?
[19:25:23] <seb_kuzminsky> yes, anything you do for linuxcnc needs to be 64-bit clean
[19:25:39] <seb_kuzminsky> we absolutely support 64-bit platforms
[19:26:11] <wortley> seb_kuzminsky: I have passed a pointer from one component to another via some unsigned pins. Unless someone talks me out of it. I am thinking I may really do that.
[19:26:38] <wortley> seb_kuzminsky: Am I going to get banned :) ?
[19:27:07] <seb_kuzminsky> do you mean from one function of a component to another function of that component?
[19:27:52] <wortley> seb_kuzminsky: Oh, no. A pointer from one components internally allocated char array, to another component.
[19:28:04] <seb_kuzminsky> that's crazy
[19:28:10] <wortley> I know
[19:28:45] <seb_kuzminsky> what are you trying to accomplish? maybe there's a non-crazy way to do it
[19:28:48] <wortley> LOL. I cannot think of any other way to clean up the net hell that a buffer that can be wired via pins could work.
[19:29:11] <seb_kuzminsky> is this the "spi to hal pins" thing?
[19:29:18] <wortley> seb_kuzminsky: I sure hope there is a non-crazy way to do it.
[19:29:27] <seb_kuzminsky> bbl, i'll read back
[19:29:44] <wortley> seb_kuzminsky: Yes. I have some stuff working now, but i I am going to have 64 pins that need wired soon.
[19:30:31] <wortley> seb_kuzminsky: I haven't written anything else here today.

[19:54:55] <wortley> seb_kuzminsky: I believe that what has me even concerned about this kind of stuff is that I REALLY want to maintain an abstracted, separate compoent for SPI, AND at the same time, allow a user to hook up to it without connecting 1000 pins. My driver would be usable by multiple "clients" because multiple chips can hang off the same SPI bus.
