[04:37:55] <seb_kuzminsky> tjtr33: right, that's gone away a while ago
[04:38:08] <tjtr33> uh web docs not up to date
[04:38:14] <seb_kuzminsky> nowdays, if you don't specify a --prefix, you get the old run-in-place behavior
[04:38:18] <seb_kuzminsky> link please?
[04:38:39] <seb_kuzminsky> bummer, i missed dgarr

[04:39:35] <seb_kuzminsky> i saw it and i'd like to give him some feedback
[04:40:04] <tjtr33> oh, i just edited it in and was building, is it ok to try?
[04:40:32] <seb_kuzminsky> err, probably
[04:40:37] <seb_kuzminsky> let me know if it works!

[04:49:29] <seb_kuzminsky> dgarr (if you read back): i think there's no need to move runtime to its own struct, i think it's fine to stay in hal_funct_t
[04:50:34] <seb_kuzminsky> in hal_export_funct(), new comes from alloc_funct_struct(), which gets it from the hal shm just like hal_malloc() does
[04:52:09] -!- MacGalempsy_ has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[04:52:16] <seb_kuzminsky> if you *do* decide to keep it as a separate struct, it's good that you delay the call to hal_malloc() for the hal_funct_pins_t struct until after dropping the mutex
[04:52:43] <seb_kuzminsky> but in that case you should check the return value of hal_malloc() and handle out-of-memory errors
[04:53:05] <seb_kuzminsky> maybe maxtime should be a pin too?
[04:53:36] <seb_kuzminsky> tjtr33: huh, did you know there's already a maxtime parameter from each hal function?
[04:54:08] <seb_kuzminsky> you had said you were going to connect a time pin to a minmax, maybe you want the min too (which isn't currently exported at all)
[05:01:39] <tjtr33> yes i saw that, and didnt know it existed
[05:02:33] <tjtr33> but you cant wire a parameter to a hal comp :( so you can graph it, but cant automate it

[20:16:03] <kwallace2> skunkworks, how is your healing going?
[20:16:27] <skunkworks> good - 4 more weeks of no lifting. Pretty sore at the end of the day still though
[20:18:17] <kwallace2> I suppose, if you are feeling better each day, that's good.
[20:20:27] <skunkworks> right

[20:23:32] <kwallace2> I saw your comments on the CNCZone/Tormach forum. Are you going to buy one? :)

[20:25:47] <skunkworks> kwallace2: heh - no. I did get to go down to tormach (it is relatively close to me). Cool machines.
[20:26:10] <skunkworks> they had a machinekit get-togather a year or 2 ago
[20:26:40] <skunkworks> My work should buy one of the lathes
[20:28:28] <skunkworks> They are very impressed with your wizard writing ability :)
[20:30:16] <kwallace2> I keep wondering why they have anything to do with me, but I'm not going to ask.
[20:31:15] <skunkworks> heh
[20:32:05] <skunkworks> I suppose it wouldn't be easy for them to make a rigid tapping kit - They probably don't have enough inputs in one printer port.
[20:33:18] -!- moorbo has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
[20:34:05] <kwallace2> They are using only one port on a 5i25, so there is another port free.
[20:36:48] <skunkworks> sure - But most people currently with the mills have printer ports.
[20:37:11] <skunkworks> I love that they are using mesa

[20:45:27] <kwallace2> I didn't consider that older Tormachs might be parallel port only.

[21:22:34] <kwallace2> The PP might me fast enough for rigid tapping but just barely. The spare 5i25 port would do just fine. I have an upgrade in mind that uses an embedded toothed steel ring in the spindle pulley. The sensors are Allegro tooth sensors. The next problem is in casting the sensor and PCB in a package that can bolt under the pulley.
[21:26:27] -!- Deejay has quit [Quit: bye]
[21:34:57] <skunkworks> the 5i25 will defiantly help but people have tapped with just the printer port
[21:42:18] <kwallace2> The only problem I have with the PP is that some users will expect the encoder to function in the full RPM range, which is about 100 RPM (easy peasey) to 5140 RPM (not even close). My guess is the the PP will peter-out at about 500 RPM ( maybe a little more), which is probably fine for most tapping, but the UI will need to manage expectations.
[21:42:47] <pcw_home> You dont need a terribly high resolution encoder for rigid tapping especially you do position interpolation
[21:42:57] <pcw_home> if you do
[21:43:50] <pcw_home> One advantage of 5I25 is that you dont need a base thread, or even very good latency
[21:45:01] <kwallace2> I rather fancy an encoder with 50 or 100 pulses per rev.
[21:47:11] <kwallace2> Plus, a 5i25 could be part of the upgrade.
[21:50:15] <pcw_home> skunkworks: I got my laptop to test hm2_eth
[21:50:17] <pcw_home> it should be a good test since it has dreadful latency :-)
