[00:46:12] <mozmck> Yes, the oval looks different
[00:46:14] <Tom_itx> PCW is the 7i47 with analog alot different than the regular one besides the analog out?

[15:46:44] <Tom_itx> what an ass
[15:47:00] <Tom_itx> he's posted that twice in every channel i'm in
[15:47:55] <archivist> his question a few days ago was off topic, lacks IRC clue

[15:55:44] <kwallace> I stopped using the user channel because of bad language and rudeness, I hope I'm not going to loose this channel too.
[15:56:19] <Tom_itx> maybe you just need a more agressive op
[15:57:33] <Tom_itx> kwallace, i noticed (not sure how old) a sherline spindle control mod you did
[15:57:42] <Tom_itx> did you ever try that circuit out?

[16:34:41] -!- chillly has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
[16:40:29] <seb_kuzminsky> mozmck: there are a couple of ways to send us the patch
[16:40:54] <seb_kuzminsky> the docs on this aren't very detailed, but what we have is this: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.7/html/code/Contributing-to-LinuxCNC.html#_overview_of_the_process
[16:41:37] <seb_kuzminsky> so either "git format-patch origin/2.7..your-branch" or "git push" to github or some other public place and tell us the branch to go look at
[16:41:43] <seb_kuzminsky> either one is fine
[16:41:57] -!- balestrino has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
[16:43:01] <seb_kuzminsky> the 'git diff' that you experimented with works, but has the drawback that it doesn't preserve you as the author of the patch
[16:44:12] <seb_kuzminsky> jthornton: that kernel NULL pointer is worrisome
[16:44:29] <seb_kuzminsky> jthornton: are you running a special nvidia driver on that machine?
[16:50:52] -!- Komzpa has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[16:58:12] -!- moorbo has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[16:58:34] -!- swingley has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
[17:00:03] <mozmck> seb_kuzminsky: thanks, I'll try the format-patch method you mentioned. I pasted the patch here last night: http://pastebin.com/1p1kKdbh
[17:00:33] <mozmck> and the modified configs/sim/manual-example.ui I used for the screenshot: http://pastebin.com/u6fCFsEs
[17:02:18] <mozmck> I guess I could fork on github and push my little branch too. If I commit this to the repo, should it go in 2.7 or master? And what is the best way to get the changes from my local branch back to 2.7 or master - merge?
[17:03:35] <seb_kuzminsky> mozmck: having a public git repo that you can share code through is more convenient if you plan to submit more changes in the future
[17:04:01] <seb_kuzminsky> but it may be simpler to just email patches if you're collaborating/submitting stuff rarely
[17:04:12] <mozmck> that makes sense, I guess that makes it easier for people to check out.
[17:04:18] <seb_kuzminsky> yeah
[17:04:44] <seb_kuzminsky> either way is fine, it's really up to you what you prefer
[17:04:52] <seb_kuzminsky> we'll be happy to have your patches in any case :-)
[17:04:58] <mozmck> I agree with kwallace2 on the user channel btw
[17:05:25] <seb_kuzminsky> that's a bummer
[17:05:30] <seb_kuzminsky> i hardly ever go there
[17:05:38] <mozmck> ok :) If you see anything wrong with the patch let me know
[17:05:53] <seb_kuzminsky> i guess we need to round up a posse
[17:06:15] <archivist> add some ops
[17:07:18] <seb_kuzminsky> archivist: is that you volunteering to be an op?
[17:08:17] <archivist> hoooo meeee, I am op is a few places
[17:09:09] <seb_kuzminsky> cool
[17:09:35] <seb_kuzminsky> i guess the first thing would be to agree to some kind of 'code of conduct' and document it somewhere
[17:10:09] <seb_kuzminsky> maybe here: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/code/Contributing-to-LinuxCNC.html#_communication_among_linuxcnc_developers
[17:11:54] <archivist> although sometimes one has to make it up on the spot, when you get a really bad one
[17:12:56] <seb_kuzminsky> sure
[17:13:13] <mozmck> true. a general code would be good though.
[17:14:19] <seb_kuzminsky> a public baseline for expected civil behavior, including a clause that says "and per op's discretion"?
[17:15:06] <archivist> yes, something like that
[17:16:03] <seb_kuzminsky> will you draft it? and we'll run it by the rest of the group
[17:16:04] <archivist> plus a bit of getting help on IRC like https://workaround.org/getting-help-on-irc
[17:16:28] <seb_kuzminsky> oh yeah, basic irc etiquette
[17:17:05] <seb_kuzminsky> we also have this: http://www.linuxcnc.org/docs/devel/html/getting-started/index.html#_getting_help
[17:17:56] <mozmck> That's pretty good - concise is nice.
[17:18:54] <mozmck> If that was in a separate document with some additions about dirty language and topics, the channel topic could have a link to it.
[17:21:08] <seb_kuzminsky> yeah, i like that idea
[17:22:03] <seb_kuzminsky> i guess we can just add a bullet-point or two to the IRC Etiquette section about how not to be a jerk
[17:22:27] <seb_kuzminsky> but i think we should deep-link to that section instead of splitting it out into a separate document
[17:25:01] <seb_kuzminsky> lol, i just noticed the subtitle on the page archivist linked
[17:25:05] <seb_kuzminsky> "literacy and subtleties for open-source bigots and other weirdos"
[17:25:31] <archivist> :)
[17:25:34] <mozmck> heh, yeah :)
[17:28:33] <archivist> I have no clue why some have unrealistic expectations when they ask off topic questions in a channel
[17:28:35] -!- anth0ny_ has quit [Quit: anth0ny_]

[17:31:34] <seb_kuzminsky> remote: Unable to relay message. All servers failed
[17:32:01] <seb_kuzminsky> the push went through & i got the email, but kgb is passed out drunk behind the woodshed, or something
[17:34:05] <cradek> I wonder what has happened to kgb
[17:34:33] -!- KGB-linuxcnc [KGB-linuxcnc!~kgb-linux@git.linuxcnc.org] has joined #linuxcnc-devel

[17:39:56] <seb_kuzminsky> cradek: do you mind if institute some kind of volunteer niceness-police in #linuxcnc?
[17:40:19] <seb_kuzminsky> apparently it's a wretched hive of scum and villainy
[17:40:23] <JT-Shop> Shooooot em
[17:40:56] * seb_kuzminsky agrees
[17:41:23] <cradek> moderation is good, I've kicked a (very very) few in my time
[17:42:02] <cradek> but mostly I believe the best moderation is passive: a general agreement to not feed the trolls
[17:42:35] <cradek> and I'd rather trust the judgment of some smart people than try to write a document that describes all the ways someone can be a jerk
[17:42:47] <JT-Shop> yep, they get bored when no one reacts and move one
[17:42:53] <seb_kuzminsky> hmm
[17:42:57] <cradek> I don't believe there has to be a big list of bad behaviors in order to have moderators
[17:43:46] <seb_kuzminsky> i'd imagined one or two bullet items that say "dont be a jerk or you'll get banned" here: http://www.linuxcnc.org/docs/devel/html/getting-started/index.html#_getting_help
[17:43:53] <archivist> it is a fine line, I see some mods go way over the top, kicking every day in busy channels
[17:44:14] <cradek> I agree overmoderation is very bad
[17:44:16] <JT-Shop> seb_kuzminsky, thanks for fixing the stg docs
[17:44:23] <seb_kuzminsky> JT-Shop: my pleasure
[17:44:35] <cradek> I probably see one situation every few months that I think deserves a kick
[17:44:36] <seb_kuzminsky> though it was really Max on the users list
[17:44:42] <cradek> I think they are extremely rare
[17:44:44] <archivist> I think ive only kicked a couple in the last year
[17:44:59] <seb_kuzminsky> i got to go, taking the kids to jiu jitsu class
[17:45:00] <cradek> I see situations every few days that call for not feeding the troll
[17:45:02] <seb_kuzminsky> back later

[17:45:46] <seb_kuzminsky> there, how's that for a patch to Getting Help?
[17:45:49] <seb_kuzminsky> ;-)
