[00:04:32] <seb_kuzminsky> memfrob: that sucks man
[00:05:50] <memfrob> Kinda funny how I notice this stuff going on though while everyone is talking about GPL...

[00:45:26] <seb_kuzminsky> memfrob: did you put a copyright notice on it? did it get propagated when they copied it?
[00:46:18] <memfrob> you cant really stick a copyright notice on a git merge / ipipe.patch
[00:58:39] -!- SpeedEvil has quit [Quit: No Ping reply in 180 seconds.]
[01:03:18] -!- Nick001-shop has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[01:03:54] <mozmck> jepler: you mention that "a program which requires a LinuxCNC shared library in order to function at all is probably a derivative in the copyright law sense". This would not apply to a hal component as I read things, since the hal library is LGPL - right?
[01:06:29] -!- Tom_L has quit []
[01:09:08] -!- andypugh [andypugh!~andy2@cpc14-basl11-2-0-cust1010.20-1.cable.virginm.net] has parted #linuxcnc-devel
[01:14:09] -!- franco has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[01:18:59] <KimK_unit1> Lately I have resumed work on my classicladder simulator, and I have been looking at larger amounts of DCIO. So I ran across a minor issue, and I was wondering if it can be improved, and how best to. First I used AXIS's HAL viewer here: http://imagebin.org/326014 Then I just used halcmd here: http://pastebin.com/6X2qVCZE So AXIS is just following the output from halcmd.
[01:20:00] <KimK_unit1> Clearly this is a sorting issue, so what do you think? Is it better to (1) change the sorting method, (2) add leading zeros and keep the sorting method, or (3) shut up and learn to live with it?
[01:23:24] <KimK_unit1> Advice and suggestions appreciated as always.
[01:25:38] -!- asdfasd has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
[01:26:37] <jepler> mozmck: I should have said something more like "a program which requires a *GPL'd* LinuxCNC shared library".
[01:32:16] <jepler> It is the expressed intent of the original author of HAL (John Kasunich) that the intent is to allow non-GPL hal components to be incorporated into a system based on HAL, when those components use the public APIs of HAL.
[01:33:43] <jepler> The intent, as I understand it, is that the implementor of a HAL component has LGPL-like obligations when using those public APIs.
[01:38:01] <jepler> additionally, by EXPORT_SYMBOL and EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL we express our intent/belief that use of some APIs but not others are intended not to create GPL-like "work based on the Program" situations.
[01:38:32] <jepler> (something which is actually enforced by a standard kernel when using rtai-based rtapi but unfortunately not when using uspace-based rtapi)

[02:43:08] <mozmck> thanks cradek. after some more digging I saw a couple of forum posts which gave a little more information. Here is one: http://linuxcnc.org/lucid/index.php/italian/forum/24-hal-components/27736-suggested-pin-for-vfd-error-input

[16:43:55] <kwallace2> I have put forward the notion that we need to put the source in with the distribution DVD and the images will either be protected by trademark law which is separate from GPL, or are part of look and feel, which apparently is not protected, so though painful, why worry about it. GPL seems to state that a file's original copyright needs to be in place, plus a statement of any changes, the authors and when. I haven't seen any files anywhere that
[16:45:16] <kwallace2> I haven't seen any files anywhere that strictly comply with this since a file could have hundreds of changes, so I think a more general statement should suffice.

[16:51:45] <skunkworks> )
[16:51:58] <jepler> kwallace2: sounds good to me -- putting the complete corresponding source code on the same media you put the binary on is a good strategy. That's 3(a) in the GPLv2.
[16:52:27] <jepler> kwallace2: if you are packaging .debs then the build process even automates creating this "complete corresponding source code" file
[16:54:50] <skunkworks> kwallace2, if not.. this seems like a good project to take on.. ;) http://www.bpuk.org/linuxcnc/

[18:52:01] <mozmck> speaking of distributing the source, if we start supporting linuxcnc, we plan to ship basically a liveCD with linuxcnc and our configs on it. Would we need to include source code for every program on the liveCD??? It kinda looks that way.
[18:58:35] -!- MacGalempsy has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[19:06:09] -!- pandeiro has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[19:08:24] <seb_kuzminsky> mozmck: i think you can do what we do, and include a link to the source code for everything on the live cd
[19:08:53] <seb_kuzminsky> i am not a lawyer, but as i understand it the main thing is this:
[19:09:18] <seb_kuzminsky> 1. if you ship a modified version of GPL software, you must supply the source code of your modified program
[19:09:37] <seb_kuzminsky> 2. if you ship a program that links against GPL libraries, you must supply the source code of your program
[19:09:53] <seb_kuzminsky> in both these cases "supply" here means "include the source code or include a link to the source code"
[19:10:05] <CaptHindsight> but supply doesn't mean it has to be on the disk
[19:10:14] <CaptHindsight> it just needs to be available
[19:10:22] <seb_kuzminsky> where source code can be anything from the .c files (or whatever), or a tarball of the sources, or a link to a git repo
[19:12:08] <CaptHindsight> no matter what you do you're going to get some source nazi to complain about how something wasn't available they way they wanted it before they even knew they wanted it
[19:12:22] -!- sumpfralle has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
[19:14:35] <mozmck> according to the article jepler linked to yesterday, you are required to make available the source code for all GPL 2 binaries that you distribute - on physical media.
[19:14:57] <kwallace2> This link makes a case for putting the source on the distribution DVD. http://www.softwarefreedom.org/resources/2008/compliance-guide.html See 4.1.1 Option (a): Source Alongside Binary
[19:15:25] <mozmck> Yes, that's the article I was talking about.
[19:16:12] <mozmck> But if you distribute a liveCD linux distribution, it could take several DVDs to get all the source for every program on the liveCD!
[19:18:19] <seb_kuzminsky> yes, that's not commonly done
[19:18:47] <seb_kuzminsky> it made more sense before the internet was widely used, and open source was developed by snail-mailing tapes around
[19:19:03] <seb_kuzminsky> now days the polite, effective thing to do is to provide a link to a public git repo
[19:19:15] <mozmck> So what would be a more normal and suitable option? Point people to the source packages of the distribution?
[19:19:16] <seb_kuzminsky> or, second best, a webserver with tarballs
[19:20:00] <mozmck> How about just pointing people to the distribution the binaries came from for the sources?
[19:20:29] <seb_kuzminsky> yes, i think that's a good way to do it for binaries that you did not make, that an upstream distribution made, that you're just redistributing
[19:20:40] <seb_kuzminsky> that's what we (linuxcnc) do for our live-cd
[19:21:41] <seb_kuzminsky> it's really mostly stuff that you modify or that you are the upstream developer for that you normally provide source code for
[19:22:01] <mozmck> According to that article the re-distributor is also required to "make available on physical media" the sources and not just the original distributor.
[19:22:09] <mozmck> that makes sense to me.
[19:22:52] <mozmck> I guess it would not be too hard to get all the source and put it on a CD if someone really wanted to get it that way :)
[19:23:06] <mozmck> But normally not include it.

[19:30:33] <mozmck> Yes, that could be a pain.
[19:30:54] <mozmck> Maybe it would all fit on one DVD.
[19:31:40] <seb_kuzminsky> the whole linuxcnc git repo is 109 MB (that includes all of history)
[19:31:56] <mozmck> Sounds like GPLv3 is a good bit better in some ways.
[19:32:27] <seb_kuzminsky> a tarball of the current tip of master is ~24 MB
[19:32:39] <cradek> if you use apt, this is super easy, because apt-get source of any package you have installed will automatically get you the source
[19:33:13] <seb_kuzminsky> cradek: i think they're worried about the letter-of-the-law that says you must provide the source on physical media if asked
[19:33:29] <cradek> availability of the corresponding source is really built into debian...
[19:33:31] <mozmck> Yes, but I'm thinking of the linux kernel, libreoffice, inkscape, etc.etc. A re-distributor must either send with or make available the source for ALL GPL binaries for up to 3 years after the end of life of the product.
[19:33:58] <cradek> that is not something that would probably come up, but if someone asks, sure, you could just do it
[19:34:46] <mozmck> hi cradek, yes, but the 3 years after the product ends could be a problem. I guess if we got all the source and kept a CD in a file, then it would be easy to just make a copy and ship it.

[19:36:23] <seb_kuzminsky> i bet we dont have source packages for the exact versions of the upstream debs we include on our live-cd
[19:36:37] <seb_kuzminsky> and i bet it will never be an issue
[19:36:38] <mozmck> see section 4.1.2 of the article kwallace2 mentioned above.
[19:37:13] <cradek> seb_kuzminsky: I suspect they're actually all available on the debian apt servers
[19:37:35] <seb_kuzminsky> i believe that our obligations can be met by fetching the deb sources that our upstream (debian wheezy) is obligated to provide
[19:37:38] <seb_kuzminsky> cradek: yes
[19:38:53] <cradek> it would be extremely unusual if we got that request
[19:38:59] <mozmck> It's obviously more of a pain for a company than individual OS developers. Who would one make a request to or sue over getting a physical media of the source code for everything on the liveCD? But for a company it's a little different.
[19:39:17] <seb_kuzminsky> cradek: i agree - un-heard-of unusual
[19:40:04] <cradek> making a dvd and keeping it in your file cabinet is an EXTREMELY small price to pay for a company using decades worth of free code

[19:43:10] <mozmck> no problem, I can understand that. I'm a free software guy as much as I can be. Started with Debian in 97 or 98
[19:43:18] <cradek> lb (the debian live build system) has a single command that will assemble the corresponding source and make an image for you.
[19:43:26] <cradek> so if you're rolling a cd for you company, you can just do that
[19:43:50] <mozmck> oh wow, that could be very useful - thanks for the tip

[20:37:38] <cradek> ... or ferror, depending on your hardware's capabilities

[20:39:11] <mozmck> We are using step/dir motors. Our THC takes over moving the Z axis after the torch fires. After a cut, the Z may not be at the same position it started out, but linuxcnc will think it never moved.
[20:39:38] <cradek> hmmm
[20:39:40] <mozmck> So at that point I want to update linuxcnc on where the axis actually is before it starts moving again.
[20:39:52] <cradek> I don't know of a way to do that
[20:40:11] <cradek> shouldn't it / can't it move back when done?
[20:40:34] <cradek> otherwise the commanded Z height from gcode doesn't seem useful
[20:41:10] <mozmck> Not always, because the metal may warp etc, so the height at the finish of a cut may be higher than the height at the start etc.
[20:41:38] <mozmck> The commanded Z is useful for the place the cut starts, but will be out of sync at the end.

[20:42:59] <cradek> you must not see this offset on-screen
[20:43:26] <mozmck> the THC component in linuxcnc now actually moves the Z, but our THC moves the Z independently of the controller.
[20:44:02] <cradek> what is Z in the gcode used for?
[20:44:02] <mozmck> well, with "that other software", I can update the position periodically during the cut and it shows in the DRO.
[20:44:55] <mozmck> Currently the Z is controlled by gcode to move to a safe height for rapids, touch-off (home), and move to pierce height and then cut height.
[20:45:42] <cradek> ok, so it is useful
[20:45:53] -!- skunkworks has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[20:46:09] <mozmck> We designed this so at some point (soon probably) we can use it on systems that don't have Z control at all and it will be able to do all of that internally. But it is useful to have a hybrid like this.
[20:46:31] <mozmck> yes. It allows jogging the Z manually easily etc.
[20:46:32] <cradek> if you open up ferror limits, you can sure display whatever Z you want on the screen, but that doesn't change commanded Z to match it, until you change to machine-off state
[20:47:09] <cradek> as soon as you change to machine-off commanded is set to be equal to feedback
[20:47:10] <mozmck> what about a touch-off (or whatever it's called?)
[20:47:25] <cradek> I don't understand that question
[20:47:51] <mozmck> can't you tell an axis where it is in the GUI?
[20:48:02] <cradek> yes, that runs a G10 command
[20:48:20] <cradek> that sets a gcode offset
[20:48:30] <cradek> it does not change the commanded position
[20:49:18] <mozmck> interesting, so if I click touch off and set X to 0.0 it just sets a gcode offset?
[20:49:38] <cradek> yes
[20:49:47] <cradek> it sure doesn't move the machine
[20:50:08] <mozmck> No, but I thought it basically set the position of that axis.
[20:53:46] <mozmck> Maybe I can basically just do a G10 then. G10 L20 looks like it might be close to what I need.
[20:55:17] <cradek> hm maybe so
[20:55:37] <cradek> I don't have a feel for how thc should work
[20:57:02] <mozmck> It's different than milling or lathe for sure
[20:58:48] <mozmck> the material is not static - thinner sheets of metal can warp an inch or two as you cut.
[20:58:56] -!- MacGalempsy has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[21:00:46] <cradek> so if you say G0Z1 and start an inch up, and then make a long cut and float upward as the piece warps, you get to the end you want it to say Z=1 again, even though if you jog back to the original start point you'll be 3" above now but it'll say Z=1?
[21:02:07] <cradek> or wait, maybe you're saying the opposite
[21:02:47] <cradek> it still says Z=1 but you want to change it to say Z=3 and simulatenously remove the automatic 2" offset, wherever that is

[21:06:59] <mozmck> If Z was always the same height off the metal at the end, it might work to let it think it's in the same absolute position. The problem we have at times is if the torch dives at the end of a cut, then it is sitting on the metal (actually below because the Z is floating), so you don't want to start XY movement until the torch has been picked up.
[21:07:21] -!- ariscop [ariscop!~Phase4@icookc.lnk.telstra.net] has joined #linuxcnc-devel
[21:07:37] <mozmck> Ideally there won't be a torch dive at the end of a cut, but sometimes it happens depending on the setup.
[21:07:53] <cradek> can you add a switch?
[21:08:26] <mozmck> there is a switch and often an ohmic sensor.
[21:08:46] <mozmck> I see - use the switch to detect that we are on the metal.
[21:08:49] <mozmck> might work
[21:08:59] <cradek> if that's the only problem you're solving...
[21:09:03] <cradek> I dunno, I'm clueless about this
[21:09:22] <mozmck> as far as I can remember that's the main problem.
[21:10:03] <mozmck> well, that gives me some ideas to look at. thanks for the help.
[21:10:17] <cradek> welcome
[21:12:43] <CaptHindsight> we had to introduce offsets to Z on the fly using a laser micrometer, but I can't recall now how we did that
[21:13:18] <mozmck> CaptHindsight: I'd be interested in anything you have on that.
[21:13:41] <CaptHindsight> there were surface irregularities that the laser would pick up and adjust the Z to keep the nozzle a set 25um from the surface
[21:14:19] <mozmck> Did linuxcnc move the Z or the laser?
[21:15:05] <CaptHindsight> we tried both and I think it was easier for Linuxcnc to do it
[21:15:23] <CaptHindsight> we gave it an offset on the fly
[21:15:29] <CaptHindsight> how I'll have to check
[21:15:58] <mozmck> our THC directly controls the Z while cutting, so I think it's a little different
[21:16:44] <CaptHindsight> yes, we could just introduce an error voltage and gate the encoder from going back to Linuxcnc
[21:17:05] <CaptHindsight> which is what you must be doing

[21:32:25] <skunkworks> so how does the software know where z is?
[21:32:50] <skunkworks> or does the board always return to a known postion?
[21:33:32] <mozmck> The board keeps track of every step it takes after taking over the Z.
[21:34:06] <mozmck> So it can report the number of steps back to the PC.
