[17:01:46] <skunkworks> I still have to figure out what I used to burn the iso to usb on windows
[17:02:27] <cradek> skunkworks: thanks
[17:02:40] <cradek> I know that is going to be a common question and it would be nice to have a good answer.
[17:03:10] <cradek> surely it's a solved problem!
[17:03:17] <pcw_home> unetbootin?
[17:03:32] <skunkworks> that sounds farmilier...
[17:04:18] <cradek> I think that is the equivalent of "startup disk creator" and it does non-hybrid stuff (doesn't just copy the image)
[17:04:21] <skunkworks> pcw_home, did you burn the weezy iso to a usb - using unetbootin.. I don't think it worked for me on linux..
[17:04:28] <skunkworks> dd did...
[17:06:25] <cradek> possibly, http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/
[17:06:44] <cradek> that looks very promising
[17:07:18] <cradek> > I was taken aback by how difficult it was to find a Windows program specifically to write .bin images to a USB drive, but this one does it beautifully.

[17:59:30] <pcw_home> windows just needs dd
[17:59:51] <cradek> windows just needs to be replaced with a fully-featured OS
[18:00:19] <cradek> did you try http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/
[18:00:40] amnesic is now known as amnesic_away
[18:01:09] <pcw_home> I just tried this from linux (since unetbootin does the same on linux or windows)
[18:01:20] <cradek> ah
[18:07:13] <ktchk> the iso dd to usb bioot with isolinux.bin s missing
[18:16:31] <ktchk> isohybrid warning more then 1024 cylinders not all BIOS will be able to boot this device

[18:20:54] <cradek> I have not seen either of those problems
[18:21:15] <cradek> what is the md5 of your downloaded image?

[18:39:56] <CaptHindsight> I just did 6 Linuxcnc installs with the 3.4.55 rtai on different distros using ISO's on flash drives
[18:40:38] <CaptHindsight> the only problem I run into is some older BIOS not detecting the OS on the flash
[18:41:38] <CaptHindsight> not much you can do it there's no BIOS update except for installing on a newer machine and then swapping the hard drive over to the older one
[18:43:47] <CaptHindsight> it/if

[18:44:48] <CaptHindsight> I still have to try the new wheezy but I got too busy here again with other projects, darn those pesky customers
[18:49:40] <skunkworks> cradek, win32diskimager works on windows xp and the wheezy iso image.
[18:49:47] <cradek> yay!!
[18:49:48] <skunkworks> (it boots...)
[18:50:40] <cradek> how many beers would it cost for you to make a wiki page with screenshots and instructions?
[18:51:42] <skunkworks> the only odd thing is it wants .img .IMG files.. (but if you select all - and select the .iso it seems to work)
[18:51:55] <skunkworks> cradek, none - it just won't happen until the weekend..
[18:52:00] <skunkworks> (probably_
[18:52:02] <skunkworks> )
[18:52:22] <skunkworks> or I should say - it probably won't happen before the weekend.
[18:52:33] <cradek> :-)

[19:46:26] <CaptHindsight> are you guys saying the unetbootin isn't working as well as win32diskimager on older mainboards?
[19:46:55] <cradek> nope
[19:47:15] <cradek> unetbootin doesn't write the raw image to the usb, which is what is needed for a hybrid style iso
[19:47:31] <cradek> unetbootin cannot make a bootable usb stick based on the iso I'm doing
[19:47:48] <cradek> neither can ubuntu's startup disk creator
[19:48:00] <CaptHindsight> ah ok
[19:48:07] <cradek> in unix you use dd to write it; in windows win32diskimager works like dd
