[00:00:01] <jepler> OK, with only a few conflicts, the commits in the range origin/unified-build-candidate-3..origin/ubc3-7i80 cherry-pick to rtos-uspace-apis. If it builds, I'll push it in since it sounds like skunkworks dreams of testing it
[00:00:30] <jepler> .. what better to do on a sunday evening anyway
[00:00:30] <skunkworks> sure - I can test that.
[00:00:34] <skunkworks> heh

[01:13:06] <cradek> dgarr: this version of gcc is buggy building with some compiler flags. I think 2.6.0~pre4 does NOT have the fix
[01:13:20] <cradek> let me figure out where the fix is...
[01:13:56] <cradek> yep it's right after 2.6.0~pre4, ref of the fix is 5bbab25f8
[01:14:10] <cradek> dgarr: it would be great if you would pull in that fix and test
[01:15:44] <cradek> jepler: let me know if I can help with hardware. I have various parport stuff but no hm2_eth type hardware.

[01:44:29] <jepler> cradek: from the dmesg, I don't think dgarr's machine even got to the point of running the linuxcnc code that had that problem
[01:44:32] -!- anth0ny has quit [Quit: anth0ny]
[01:45:08] <cradek> I was running master, and he's running 2.6, so I thought maybe the symptoms could be different?
[01:45:13] <jepler> dgarr: is it a machine that needs "lapic" on the kernel commandline? some googling I did indicated that not running with APIC could be related
[01:46:22] <jepler> cradek: none of the stack frames are linuxcnc. it's possible that rtai itself is affected, though I thought having floating-point function parameters was related, and those stack frames don'e look like they would have
[01:46:50] <jepler> in fact no linuxcnc kernel module is loaded yet
[01:47:12] <jepler> cradek: if you have a parport pci card, I'd borrow it.
[01:48:21] <dgarr> my test just finished using commit 5bbab25f8, same Oops result
[01:48:53] <dgarr> on same machine, with lucid, rtai i never used lapic option that i know of
[01:48:59] <cradek> dgarr: are you running the 486 or the 686-pae version?
[01:49:05] <dgarr> 686
[01:49:38] <cradek> hmm, not good. darnit.
[01:50:48] <jepler> dgarr: does the same problem occur with the rtai latency test?
[01:54:21] <dgarr> # rmmod rtai_hal
[01:54:21] <dgarr> Error: Module rtai_hal is in use
[01:55:00] <dgarr> i have to reboot i guess --- rtai latency test that is part of rtai? do you know the name

[02:05:34] <dgarr> dmesg|grep -i apic appended to www.panix.com/~dgarrett/stuff/3.4-9-rtai.txt
[02:05:42] <jepler> I *believe* that the real problem is: I-pipe: could not find timer for cpu #0
[02:05:59] <jepler> the crash in ipipe_timers_release is because they made a mistake in timer cleanup when no timer was found
[02:06:13] <jepler> .. so while it would be nice if it didn't Oops in that case, it's not the real problem
[02:07:23] <jepler> in their kernel patch, the fix for the subsequent crash might be along the lines of
[02:07:26] <jepler> [3$ +static void ipipe_timer_release_sync(void)
[02:07:29] <jepler> +{
[02:07:31] <jepler> + struct ipipe_timer *timer = __ipipe_this_cpu_read(percpu_timer);

[02:07:37] <jepler> ++ if(timer)
[02:07:39] <jepler> + timer->release(timer);

[02:10:45] <dgarr> i'll try lapic flag now, i wonder if there are any apic options that would help find the timer?
[02:17:17] <dgarr> same Oops with lapic (BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-3.4-9-rtai-686-pae root=UUID=fc07f0a1-747e-4827-902c-317ed03ca4cf lapic ro)

[02:19:29] <dgarr> what compiler version was used for vmlinuz-3.4-9-rtai-686-pae stuff i wonder if that could matter?
[02:22:22] <jepler> I assume the same gcc 4.7

[17:39:11] <micges-dev> yeah seems simple

[17:42:25] <jepler> if only everything could be simple
[17:42:50] <jepler> you know what would be cool: build the hostmot2 vhdl as a userspace app, and have it talk udp to hm2_eth
[17:42:58] <jepler> then you could test the whole hostmot2 in software
[17:43:49] <jepler> you'd want the hostmot2 vhdl to also be a hal component, so you could run it as a hal "fast thread"
[17:44:16] <jepler> I wonder if hostmot2 works right if you say its basic clock is .04MHz
[17:45:45] <micges-dev> nice idea
[17:46:20] <seb_kuzminsky> maybe the xilinx webpack stuff has an emulator?
[17:47:10] <jepler> I used ghdl to build a program that incorporated vhdl source code into a linux executable
[17:47:29] <jepler> it was only on a small fraction of the total hostmot2, though -- just the PIN file and a bit more
[17:48:00] <jepler> pinxml.py in the source of hostmot2-firmware, it's how I made the .xml description of the firmware's capabilities
[17:49:41] <jepler> I suspect it's more than a weekend project though
[17:50:15] <micges-dev> On the other way I'm extracting sserial code and encoder code into library which can be used from user space for one small project
[17:50:33] <jepler> neat!
[17:50:58] <micges-dev> I think it would be easier to make some automatic sort of tests of lib code with some boards
[17:52:47] <seb_kuzminsky> i didn't know about ghdl, looks neat
[17:53:35] <jepler> yes, a testing program that wasn't hostmot2's vhdl would also be useful
[17:53:41] <jepler> if your goal is to test the driver
[17:54:35] <seb_kuzminsky> it'd be good to test the vhdl too
[17:54:44] <jepler> I imagine tests for the velocity estimation, encoder rollovers, and those kinds of things: difficult to set up on real hardware, and probably buggy until tested to death
[17:55:03] <seb_kuzminsky> yeah, right

[18:27:20] <jepler> skunkworks: possibly not.
[18:30:36] <jepler> skunkworks: there's linux-image-lowlatency, but no -rt or -realtime apparently
[18:30:47] <skunkworks> ok
[18:30:49] <jepler> >>>
[18:30:50] <jepler> -lowlatency kernel - very similar to the -preempt kernel and based on the -generic kernel source tree, but uses a more aggressive configuration to further reduce latency. Also know as a soft real-time kernel.
[18:30:54] <jepler> -realtime kernel - is based on the vanilla kernel source tree with Ingo Molnar maintained PREEMPT_RT patch applied to it. Also know as a hard real-time kernel.
[18:31:08] <skunkworks> so I need to get wheezy booting
[18:31:12] <skunkworks> :)
[18:32:29] <jepler> you could try lowlatency and see what results you get
[18:32:49] <jepler> .. if only so we know not to bother trying any harder
[18:33:34] <jepler> according to the very outdated ubuntu wiki pages I've found, -lowlatency was giving latencies in the 3-4ms range, not particularly good for linuxcnc.

[22:05:03] <cradek> [answering way back in time] yes that was on purpose at the time, because that's where I got the linuxcnc package. it should be no longer. added dialout to the initial groups (weird that they have both dip and dialout). what firware package(s) should I add? I wasn't sure they were up to date enough to bother...?
[22:14:00] <cradek> skunkworks_: for my very old machine with broken usb booting, I used "plop": http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager/download.html
[22:14:19] <cradek> you put it on a cd, and then when you boot it, you can pick "usb" to boot the stick
[22:14:59] <cradek> I wonder if some bioses fail to boot images more than a cd's size or something
[22:15:57] <cradek> fwiw, I put the latest at www.linuxcnc.org/binary.hybrid.iso - md5sum 730f13ef0292712f599bd458276f5f10

[23:12:51] <JT-Shop> I can't understand why Marius uses the requested velocity in the thcud calculation for correction amount
[23:13:23] <JT-Shop> to me it seems like each period you move some amount if correction is needed
[23:16:33] <JT-Shop> if I understand what is going on each period you could have a step, so in the comp you can't go more than one step each time
[23:17:05] <JT-Shop> because your not commanding Z to move while you cut you can hyjack the position by the max of one step per period
[23:17:13] <JT-Shop> I think this is correct
[23:17:53] <cradek> skunkworks_: well crap, I don't know what to suggest
[23:18:19] <JT-Shop> I think a problem happens when the comp removes the offset... in one direction it just changes the number but in the other direction it might try and step twice per period
[23:18:36] <cradek> I wonder if there are usb settings wrong, or we have usb drivers wrong in the kernel
[23:19:10] <cradek> skunkworks_: you might also try adding rootdelay=10 to the kernel command line
[23:19:31] <cradek> I had to do that for my machine that boots lvm from CF
[23:19:52] <cradek> if you find that fixes it, I bet I can add it by default and it'll only cost a few seconds.
