[00:10:23] <dgarr> no -- that config is not a runnable-on-any-machine sim since it uses a parport, i'm more focused on updating sims that should run on almost any computer, you are welcome to fix it if you know what is needed or wrong with it
[00:10:53] <andypugh> OK, I just didn't want to fix something that was already fixed
[00:12:13] <dgarr> i don't have a parport on the laptop i use for this work:P

[17:23:11] <seb_kuzminsky> heh
[17:23:15] <skunkworks__> ooh - I have a puma....
[17:23:42] <seb_kuzminsky> i'll look up the motor specs next time i'm in the hack space - i'm pretty sure they're little 12V pittmans
[17:23:53] <seb_kuzminsky> skunkworks__: the interface right now is awful
[17:24:23] <seb_kuzminsky> there's a control box (visible under the monitor in the first picture)
[17:24:36] <seb_kuzminsky> it speaks rs-232 at 9600 bps to the PC
[17:25:07] <seb_kuzminsky> there's a goofy little ascii protocol for controlling it, implemented in the python hal component in that branch i just pushed
[17:25:32] <seb_kuzminsky> you basically tell the control box what encoder count you want each servo to go to, and it tries to do it for you
[17:25:40] <seb_kuzminsky> you can also query the limit switches
[17:26:32] <seb_kuzminsky> i hooked it up and got it running, and the other people in the hackspace were like "i thought linuxcnc didnt support serial" and i had to hem and haw about how it's just a prototype for testing ja and nontrivkins
[17:27:03] <jepler> how many positions per second can you command at 9600 bps?
[17:27:08] <jepler> 10 or 20?
[17:27:19] <jepler> less?
[17:27:40] <seb_kuzminsky> more

[17:28:25] -!- patrickarlt has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[17:29:07] <seb_kuzminsky> 9600 bps is ~100 bytes/second (they use TWO stop bits), and each servo position command is 4 bytes + the position you want, maybe 3-4 bytes, so call it 8 bytes per servo update
[17:29:13] <seb_kuzminsky> so i guess you're right, 10-20 ;-)
[17:29:48] <seb_kuzminsky> plus you need to waste time asking about the limit switches
[17:29:57] <seb_kuzminsky> it's not awesome
[17:30:17] <skunkworks__> I thought linuxcnc couldn't use serial....

[17:31:00] <seb_kuzminsky> yeah, and that robot's position refresh frequency demonstrates why ;-)

[19:09:18] <mhaberler> there is no 'preempt' branch - this is the unified build for all kernels
[19:09:45] <mhaberler> all you need is an rt-preempt kernel running, then build and start it

[19:13:07] <mhaberler> what I meant is - micges code will work with rt-preempt kernel only; the other stuff should work on any kernel unchanged
[19:14:17] <andypugh> Yesterday I pushed a script that changes the HAL pin names in config files to reflect the JA3 changes. I just remebered that there are also smart-serial pin name chabges (for the 7i64) between 2.5.3 and master. Would it be sensible to roll those changes up in the same script, or should I push a different version of the script for the 2.5-to-2.6 changes?
[19:15:20] <cradek> I don't think we know yet whether we'll merge ja4 before 2.6 but it's looking unlikely to me.
[19:15:30] <skunkworks__> right - I understand that - I have preempt running. I just pulled your master ubc3 and made it. it seems to work - but the the hm2_eth isn't there - so I need to switch to that branch. (Which I think I figured out..) building now.
[19:15:34] <cradek> previously we've just given instructions for changes like you're talking about
[19:16:03] <cradek> so I'm not too sure whether a script is appropriate -- but if it is, it should be separate from the ja4 config-updating script
[19:16:38] <andypugh> Are you also saying that you are unconvinced about the advisability of the JA4 script?
[19:17:15] <cradek> not really. that's a much more invasive type of change
[19:17:25] <cradek> I don't know enough about the sserial change to know how big it is
[19:17:36] <andypugh> Bah! I was just marshalling my robust arguments :-)
[19:17:59] <skunkworks__> andypugh, how much torque does that washing machine motor seem to have with the 2.2kw driver?
