[00:00:33] <andypugh> And the output pin changes as expected too.
[00:07:45] <andypugh> And, in fact, other than the fact that the insmod error abouts the hal file load, it all works perfectly.
[00:09:20] <andypugh> micges: So, we have ethernet to 8i20 to parallel cable to 7i76 to smart-serial to 7i73 to a ribbon cable to an LCD display, all seeming to work.
[00:09:34] <andypugh> Sorry, not 8i20. 7i*0
[00:09:42] <andypugh> 7i80 eve

[00:09:50] <andypugh> (Bed time!)
[00:10:31] <micges> andypugh: that's great, thnaks for test
[00:10:54] <micges> if you can leave it running with sserial for few hours
[00:11:13] <andypugh> An 8i20 would be a good test, it would indicate if the timing was OK, with hall signals heading one way, and motor control the other.
[00:11:40] <andypugh> I just need to plug it all back together and we can try that with the washing machine motor.
[00:13:26] <micges> first Peter needs to backport 7i80 eth interface to 8i20
[00:13:52] <andypugh> No, 8i20 is smart-serial
[00:14:10] <andypugh> I was meaning 7i80 to 7i76 to 8i20 to motor
[00:14:19] <micges> ah
[00:14:31] <micges> I messed up, here it's also bed time :)
[00:15:00] <andypugh> 7i80 to 7i44 to 8 x 8i20 would be a fun setup :-)
[00:15:18] <andypugh> (7i74, I suppose, with the 7i80db)
[00:16:46] <micges> seems like utimate test

[16:19:55] <mozmck> I just installed mint and it is nice.
[16:21:54] <mozmck> I want to stay a little more up-to-date on some programs than debian stable, but debian testing can tend to change *too* much - at least it used to.

[16:23:33] <cradek> they are fighting to get it in debian and debian is telling them to clean up their packages, so I bet it will improve
[16:24:46] <mozmck> Maybe you mean MATE as a successor to gnome2?
[16:24:59] <cradek> yes mint+MATE
[16:25:02] <mozmck> I'm using Cinnamon desktop and like it pretty well.
[16:25:20] <cradek> I meant they (the mint people?) are trying to get MATE into debian
[16:25:31] <cradek> I haven't tried that one
[16:25:34] <mozmck> haven't tried MATE, but I like XFCE pretty well.
[16:25:49] <jepler> fwiw I've set up XFCE as the desktop on my last 3 systems
[16:26:05] <cradek> I think my weapon of choice is xfce now, because although it doesn't quite have the features of gnome2, it has some years on it and seems free of terrible ideas
[16:26:27] <mozmck> Cinnamon is mostly a little slicker looking than XFCE, but there are some nice features of the file manager that I like better than in xfce.
[16:26:55] <cradek> I totally don't care about slick looks
[16:27:23] <mozmck> yes, xfce is good. I noticed the newest version also has a search bar in the main menu, which I've found to be pretty handy in cinnamon.
[16:27:24] <cradek> I want rectangular windows with functional decorations
[16:28:31] <cradek> the default xubuntu desktop theme had one-pixel window corners that you have to grab to resize. that's unusable.
[16:28:37] <mozmck> I don't mind it looking better, but it's the functionality I'm interested in - along with the ability to change things easily.
[16:30:26] <cradek> anymore I just try to choose the distribution and desktop that's had the least harm done to it so far - and that makes me sad
[16:31:39] <mozmck> yes. I may try solydxk (XFCE version) for my next install. I really don't care if it won't run on someones cell phone - or smart watch.
[16:32:03] <memleak> gnome 2 still the default in gentoo :)
[16:32:53] <mozmck> :) I really like debian based systems, but gentoo and arch do look interesting.
[16:33:28] <memleak> i used to be an archlinux dev, i had to stop using it because it was too unstable.
[16:33:33] <mozmck> I don't want to have to spend lots of time on the system though, because I don't have that time. I need something I can be done with and using in a few hours.
[16:33:46] <jepler> mozmck: agree
[16:33:48] <mozmck> interesting. that's what I want to avoid.
[16:33:51] <memleak> as soon as a new version of anything comes out, they package it, regardless of stability.
[16:34:14] <memleak> the day gcc 4.8 comes out is the day arch makes it the default.
[16:34:14] <cradek> I had never really used basic debian before, but was surprised recently to find that it was a fine and usable system with no harm done to it
[16:35:15] <mozmck> I started with debian in about '98, and ran testing because stable was too behind (like didn't support my hardware and other things).
[16:36:57] <memleak> arch is simply too new. if you dont constantly update it, you'll either be stuck with a broken system and hundreds of package conflicts that would take hours to repair, or you'd get lucky and find a time to update and get lucky enough which will last you awhile, but the package manager wont know what to do because it hasnt been updated in a few weeks.
[16:37:40] <mozmck> Switched to ubuntu because it worked better out of the box (at the time) than debian, and was updated reasonably often while still being stable. That has changed over the last couple years now, and I'm probably on my last ubuntu now.
[16:38:08] <memleak> arch is more of a war between the world's lastest linux utilities and libraries with absolutely no concept of anything else except version numbers
[16:38:52] <cradek> ubuntu 6-8-10 were all really good systems. it's going off the rails now.
[16:38:54] <memleak> gentoo is the most stable distribution out there, at least for me
[16:39:01] <mozmck> memleak: that's kind of the problem I had with debian unstable and testing, but probably not nearly as bad.
[16:39:22] <jepler> I've been using debian testing on my laptop and it hasn't bitten me too hard yet
[16:39:31] <jepler> servers get stable. linuxcnc would get stable.

[16:40:54] <mozmck> jepler: I didn't have too much trouble with testing. I think I had a couple of times X wouldn't start after an update, and there would be some package conflicts, but that has been a while back now.
[16:40:54] <memleak> the only bugs i hear about with debian unstable is how in the past 10 years something kept crashing 3 times
