[02:23:15] <cradek> I agree with seb_kuzminsky about "busy"; I like some of the ideas like the better-rendered tools, but I wish he wasn't the goofy-googly-eyed penguin, and I don't think the fonts should be so loud and attention-grabbing. I'd prefer to see LinuxCNC done as one word, in a font that doesn't say "look at me I'm fancy"

[19:30:31] <psha> mhaberler: heh, have you tested protobuf speed?
[19:30:50] <mhaberler> which one, c or py
[19:30:58] <psha> C
[19:31:00] <psha> C or C++
[19:31:13] <psha> seems that not much difference..
[19:31:49] -!- ChristianS has quit [Excess Flood]
[19:31:59] <mhaberler> you have an issue?
[19:32:07] <psha> i have numbers that i don't trust
[19:32:11] <mhaberler> or curious?
[19:32:15] <mhaberler> show me
[19:32:42] <psha> sub ns encoding times...
[19:33:00] <mhaberler> I dont think pb will be an issue at all in this context, except for the non-native Py bindings
[19:33:05] <mhaberler> that is a bit fast
[19:33:05] <psha> 1.5ns for encoding of message with 20 submessages
[19:33:16] <mhaberler> wtf
[19:33:21] <psha> yep :]
[19:33:24] <psha> something wierd
[19:33:37] <psha> probably i've mistake somewhere and it caches everything
[19:33:47] <mhaberler> post your 'measuring code' please ;)
[19:34:06] <mhaberler> that could well be the case; do a message.Clear() to wipe tje curren Message
[19:34:44] <mhaberler> they do recommend to reuse the Message object and .Clear() it to reduce mem fragmentation
[19:35:04] <psha> for (int i = 0; i < count; i++) {
[19:35:04] <psha> buf.reserve(updates__get_packed_size(&update));
[19:35:04] <psha> update.updates[i % update.n_updates]->price = i;
[19:35:04] <psha> updates__pack(&update, buf.data());
[19:35:04] <psha> }
[19:35:42] <psha> buf.reserve is noop in 99% of cases
[19:36:01] <mhaberler> yes, that is cached on the instance object
[19:36:27] <mhaberler> look at the members (the nonexposed ones) you have a cached size, and a dirty flag
[19:36:30] <psha> so it encodes only one...
[19:36:35] <mhaberler> yes
[19:36:36] <psha> thx
[19:36:54] <mhaberler> what is the range of i
[19:37:12] <mhaberler> depending on i and encoding of i (fixed or varint) size could change
[19:37:22] <mhaberler> fixed would be faster and const size
[19:37:41] <psha> for (int j = 0; j < update.n_updates; j++)
[19:37:41] <psha> update.updates[j]->price += i;
[19:37:41] <psha> buf.reserve(updates__get_packed_size(&update));
[19:37:41] <psha> updates__pack(&update, buf.data());
[19:37:45] <psha> no luck :]
[19:37:46] <psha> 1.3ns
[19:38:12] <mhaberler> now what about the deserialized results, do these actually make sense?
[19:38:13] <psha> i < 1000000
[19:38:20] <psha> have not yet tried
[19:38:28] <mhaberler> varint or fixed32 for i
[19:38:31] <mhaberler> ah price
[19:38:39] <psha> varint
[19:38:56] <mhaberler> hm, that should change size then at least twice
[19:39:06] <psha> sint64_t
[19:39:08] <psha> to be exact
[19:39:13] <psha> yes, size increases
[19:39:16] <mhaberler> no the proto encoding
[19:39:31] <mhaberler> whats the field line in the .proto
[19:39:40] <mhaberler> thats a c tyĆ¼e
[19:39:41] <psha> sint64_t in proto file - varint with sign bit in lower one
[19:40:32] <mhaberler> sorry, sint64_t isnt a protobuf type, thats c type , I mean those; https://developers.google.com/protocol-buffers/docs/proto#scalar
[19:41:06] <mhaberler> sfixed64 or sin64 - if it changes size I guess sint64
[19:41:07] <psha> sint64_t is not C type :)
[19:41:18] <psha> sint64 is protobuf, int64_t is C )
[19:41:25] <psha> sorry for confusion
[19:41:41] <mhaberler> ok.. but not pb either, its a type in the psha parallel universe ;)
[19:41:48] <mhaberler> sure
[19:42:33] <mhaberler> add a deserialsation step to the loop and assert results add up, but it is _very_ well optimzed
[19:43:00] <mhaberler> that looks a bit like protoc-c?
[19:43:27] <psha> yep
[19:43:30] <psha> that's exactly it
[19:43:49] <psha> i'm testing both
[19:43:51] <psha> C and C++
[19:44:05] -!- ries has quit [Ping timeout: 248 seconds]
[19:44:10] <mhaberler> do you get similar timings with c++?
[19:44:51] <psha> yep
[19:44:55] <psha> similar tests
[19:45:03] <psha> looks like i've error in timing test
[19:45:11] <mhaberler> try some python to slow you down ;)
[19:45:52] <psha> :]
[19:46:24] <mhaberler> the optimizer might play games on you, she is in psha detection mode tonight
[19:46:56] <psha> looks like
[19:47:01] <mhaberler> dead code removal
[19:47:02] <psha> 3 digits lost somewhere...
[19:47:09] <psha> optimized timers...
[19:47:14] <mhaberler> ha
[19:47:30] <mhaberler> well now it's starting to make sense
[19:47:52] <mhaberler> 1,5uS, you mean per iteration?
[19:48:18] <psha> yep
[19:48:35] <mhaberler> sounds reasonable
[19:49:53] <psha> buggy gcc-4.7 in testing
[19:51:46] <psha> Serialize: 1.318us/m
[19:51:46] <psha> Deserialize: 2.355us/m
[19:51:50] <psha> looks better
[19:53:22] <mhaberler> yes, makes sense
[19:54:19] <mhaberler> btw.. since you're mr bleeding edge.. https://github.com/kentonv/capnproto
[19:54:34] <mhaberler> is this phun or for work?
[19:55:09] <psha> investigating if we could use protobuf in our work
[19:55:21] <mhaberler> then forget that link for now
[19:55:52] <psha> hm, reads like a bs
[19:56:32] <mhaberler> that was the key guy in google behind lots of protobuf, knows what he's doing ; but that is very early
[19:56:36] <psha> however author is kenton varda
[19:56:39] <mhaberler> tweak your .proto
[19:56:40] <psha> yep
[19:56:49] <mhaberler> use fixed size scalars
[19:56:56] <psha> nonono :)
[19:57:03] <mhaberler> c'mon
[19:57:04] <psha> i wanna times
[19:57:07] <psha> not for fixed
[19:57:10] <psha> but for varints
[19:57:12] <psha> and tags
[19:57:31] <mhaberler> tag..
[19:58:03] <psha> btw thanks for capnpn
[19:58:17] <mhaberler> sure
[19:58:24] <mhaberler> found anything faster?
[19:58:42] <psha> we are using something like it
[19:58:43] <psha> here
[19:59:01] <psha> but i hate it :(
[19:59:07] <mhaberler> I see
[19:59:13] <psha> however i've written it myself :]
[19:59:28] <mhaberler> well then I dont have to read it to agree ;)
[20:00:05] <psha> it's working ok but all such schemes (like in capnp - no encoding/decoding) have serious issues with forward/backward compatiblility
[20:02:01] <mhaberler> btw used your json deserializer + websockets sever, works just fine, not surprises (just example log subscriber)
[20:02:11] <psha> glad to hear
[20:02:17] <mhaberler> that was a pretty sharp idea
[20:05:09] <mhaberler> are you using any RPC?
[20:06:43] <psha> not yet
[20:06:58] <psha> and probably not at all :]
[20:07:09] <psha> zmq for quickstart purposes
[20:07:20] <psha> should be replaced later
[20:07:37] <mhaberler> by the service/rpc scheme in pb?
[20:07:55] <mhaberler> or different stack?
[20:11:13] <psha> we are not using pb now
[20:11:25] <psha> something like capnp
[20:11:27] <mhaberler> aja
[20:11:33] <psha> but inhouse
[20:11:46] <mhaberler> you guys got too much time ;)
[20:12:27] <psha> hm, that's was done in two months :) full transport, encoding
[20:12:41] <psha> and lot of small goodies on top
[20:12:44] <mhaberler> idl or manual?
[20:13:22] <psha> encoding = ~capnp - machine readable description of structs, generator code, reflections. etc
[20:13:31] <psha> python/c/c++

[20:16:12] <psha> at least for some parts
[20:17:26] <mhaberler> well makes sense, outsource support and some new features over time; over here there is a glaring example of an 'in-house middleware stack' collecting cobwebs
[20:18:04] -!- flippyhead has quit [Quit: flippyhead]
[20:20:58] <psha> yep
[20:26:27] -!- kwallace2 [kwallace2!~kwallace@smb-190.sonnet.com] has parted #linuxcnc-devel
[20:29:10] <psha> capnp uses smart idea - instead of encoding/decoding message just intersperse it with tag data
[20:29:22] <psha> and thus you'll get 'serialization' for free.
[20:29:23] <psha> ..
[20:29:44] <psha> only thing is packed Bool bits and pointers that should be changed from offset to absolute
[20:30:26] <mhaberler> not sure what free serialisation means in a bigendian vs littleendian comms
[20:30:41] <mhaberler> he must have a common wire format for that to work
[20:32:06] <mhaberler> actually there was a german fellow over on zmq-dev who wrote his own serializers/deserialisers to work within pb framework; let me see if I can find that
[20:33:05] <psha> littleendian
[20:33:41] <psha> seems that big endian is not that popular nowdays
[20:35:26] <mhaberler> but he does wire2host if bigendian, I assume?
[20:37:31] <mhaberler> you have mail; see 'transenc'
[20:37:46] <mhaberler> not sure if it's any good
[20:38:10] <mhaberler> I guess it's extending your JSON stunt to wireformat
[20:38:54] <psha> thx

[21:19:26] <psha> mhaberler: heh, kenton has his own library of goodies in capnpn (c++/src/kj)
[21:19:49] <psha> and it's fun to see maybe<T> there - type that i have in my own C++ goodies lib :)
[21:20:39] <mhaberler> and what's worth looking at there?
[21:21:48] <psha> don't know yet
[21:21:54] <psha> just reading through code
[21:22:04] <mhaberler> aha, mining today, hm
[21:22:07] <psha> looks like he's got freedom to write what he want and...
[21:23:03] <psha> compiler requirements are high :) gcc >= 4.7 and clang >= 3.2
[21:24:23] <mhaberler> Am I supposed to understand this, or can you summarize for me ;-?
[21:25:03] <psha> too much C++ features per line of code
[21:25:13] <psha> C++11
[21:25:38] <psha> so older compilers found on older systems (debian/squeeze / centos / rhel / ...) are out of boat
