[01:14:54] <seb_kuzminsky> CaptHindsight: cool! i'll try to build 64-bit rtai kernel debs soonish
[01:20:02] <memleak> seb_kuzminsky, remember if you have any issues with 64-bit RTAI with the shabbyx repo just let me know.
[01:20:14] <seb_kuzminsky> ok i will!
[01:20:23] <seb_kuzminsky> is the master branch in that repo still the thing to use?
[01:20:28] <memleak> yes
[01:20:39] <seb_kuzminsky> great
[01:20:48] <memleak> so far so good for you?
[01:21:09] <seb_kuzminsky> with the 32-bit rtai kernel? no problems here, but i haven't run it much
[01:21:18] <memleak> ok just checking
[01:21:40] <seb_kuzminsky> i really need to update the precise rtai vm in the buildbot to use your kernel, it's running some random old kernel from paolo's repo back in way-back-when
[01:22:06] -!- c-bob| has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
[01:22:49] <memleak> i was going to update the kernel to 3.4.59 and some un-merged fixes into the tree so let me do that before you do that
[01:23:26] <memleak> i'll do some work on it tomorrow i think
[01:24:33] <memleak> just so i know my time frame do you know when you might update the buildbot?

[01:50:47] <seb_kuzminsky> memleak: i'll put the current one (3.4.55-rtai-1) on there in the next day or two probably, and i'll update it again when you tell me you're ready
[01:51:06] <seb_kuzminsky> i'll add a 64-bit rtai buidlslave too when i get around to it

[03:50:14] <KimK> seb_kuzminsky: Hi Seb, welcome back! I may be one of the "some testers" referred to by CaptHindsight above, I installed 12.04(32), then "Seb's debs", all appeared to go well, except the grub2 menu does not offer 55-rtai as a boot choice, only 51-generic. But, oddly, "sudo update-grub" does find 55-rtai, at least according to the printout.
[03:55:25] <KimK> seb_kuzminsky: But I won't have any Mesa cards for my unit 2 for a week or more, so no hurry. I'm waiting to see what you and memleak and CaptHindsight come up with. I hope to be running unit 2 on 64-bit RTAI if possible. Unit 1 (from the fest) is still running zultron's and mhaberler's 64-bit Xenomai.
[03:57:28] -!- AR_ has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
[03:59:57] -!- tchaddad has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[04:04:48] <KimK> seb_kuzminsky: Some have wondered why I don't just use 32-bit and be happy (sometimes me too!) But it turned out to be a good thing to help Andy find a 64-bit hostmot2 bug and I'd like to continue to help wring out the 64-bit versions as thoroughly as I/we can.
[04:04:48] -!- tjtr33 [tjtr33!~tjtr33@76-216-190-185.lightspeed.cicril.sbcglobal.net] has joined #linuxcnc-devel
[04:04:49] <memleak> glad to finally hear someone is interested in RTAI!
[04:05:08] <memleak> so many people blindly fall head over heels for xenomai, heh.
[04:05:25] <KimK> Ha, yes, it's good to have choices!
[04:05:56] <tjtr33> fwiw live visulaization of chgs to tree 'Gource' http://code.google.com/p/gource/
[04:08:18] <memleak> tjtr33, that's actually pretty cool!
[04:08:27] <memleak> i never heard of gource before!
[04:09:02] <memleak> even support for VBOs and OpenGL 2.0!
[04:09:32] <tjtr33> i was looking for more info on 0MQ and stumbled into it
[04:10:49] <KimK> tjtr33: Amusing, possibly informative. I wonder if developer X will post unneeded updates to repos A,B,C,D,E so he can complete his "cool spiderman swing" across the tree?
[04:11:34] -!- tomp3 has quit [Client Quit]
[04:12:19] <tjtr33> KimK haha
[04:12:22] <KimK> (In case it wasn't clear, I am not referring to any specific person as X!)
[04:12:59] <tjtr33> KimK i got it, AND will can that teacher's cheatsheet for APT book someday :|
[04:13:04] <memleak> it took me awhile to figure that one out..
[04:14:03] <KimK> Maybe I should have said branches instead of repos.
[04:14:49] <tjtr33> i could see spider-webs on dead code
[04:14:51] <KimK> Or maybe you can only see one branches' tree at a time, I don't know how it works.
[04:21:30] -!- Laremere has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
[04:24:55] z256 is now known as Tecan
[04:28:53] <memleak> tjtr33, that's a nice pun!
[04:29:23] <memleak> considering dead code is hardly ever removed..
[04:31:11] <seb_kuzminsky> linuxcnc-build: force build --branch=master checkin
[04:31:11] <linuxcnc-build> build forced [ETA 1h20m57s]
[04:31:12] <linuxcnc-build> I'll give a shout when the build finishes
[04:31:30] <seb_kuzminsky> KimK: strange that installing the 3.4.55-rtai-1 deb didn't update grub for you
[04:31:47] <seb_kuzminsky> i just tried it on one of the buildbot VMs and it worked fine for me
[04:31:53] <seb_kuzminsky> i wonder what's different
[04:32:13] <seb_kuzminsky> memleak: the precise-rtai-i386 buildslave is now running 3.4.55-rtai-1
[04:36:53] <memleak> based on the shabbyx rtai userspace
[04:36:54] <memleak> ?
[04:38:46] <seb_kuzminsky> yeah
[04:39:29] <memleak> oooo :D
[04:40:31] <memleak> who runs the build bot?..
[04:41:05] <seb_kuzminsky> i do
[04:41:14] <memleak> ah thats yours!
[04:42:12] <memleak> so does that mean whenever a commit is pushed into the linuxcnc master branch that the bot automatically tests the changes using the 3.4.55 build bot?
[04:42:24] <seb_kuzminsky> it's running commit a0dc5355ee233032926dd23d1e132ef1befbbd76 from shabby's rtai repo
[04:42:43] <seb_kuzminsky> yes
[04:42:53] <seb_kuzminsky> it also tests all other branches that get pushed, not just master
[04:43:59] <memleak> ah thats from 2 weeks ago
[04:45:11] <seb_kuzminsky> yep, just before i left on my trip - you goaded me into building new debs at that time ;-)
[04:45:36] <memleak> yes its stable and all!
[04:47:52] <KimK> Hi Seb! I did a new install on a blank drive. I was wondering if you had copied some needed file on some previous occasion, so yours worked fine. I never did that, so, trouble?
[04:48:11] <memleak> that commit works great, every few days to a week i always at least push something to the tree that either cosmetically cleans something up or i remove stale and or dead files. sometimes i update it against the current magma CVS branch
[04:48:23] -!- mhaberler [mhaberler!~mhaberler@macbook.stiwoll.mah.priv.at] has joined #linuxcnc-devel
[04:48:25] <memleak> speaking of which it's time to merge magma and vulcano together again.
[04:49:24] <memleak> i'll probably be doing all this tomorrow. big day for RTAI again! :D
[04:50:43] <memleak> kernel IPIPE fixes and rebasing the patches against newer kernels as well.

[13:22:39] <mhaberler> well I have the spindle encoder on a pid loop; have a look at the HAL USGAGE section in orient.9 , and have a look at my mill config:

[15:05:51] <cradek> I wonder what it thinks it's specifying with P4.553186
[15:07:11] <cradek> seems awfully fragile and overspecified if you have to give the endpoint and center and exact fractional number of turns
[15:08:29] <JT-Shop> so this is not correct? "To program an arc that gives more than one full turn, use a P word specifying the number of full or partial turns of arc."
[15:09:20] <cradek> it is correct but apparently not as clear as it might be?
[15:09:43] <cradek> For example, if an arc is programmed with P2, the resulting motion will be more than one full circle and up to two full circles (depending on the programmed endpoint.)
[15:09:58] <JT-Shop> ah I got it now
[15:09:59] <cradek> I think this following sentence clarifies it
[15:11:03] <JT-Shop> yes it is clear to me now that a few more words are needed to be clear about how to program P
[15:11:25] <JT-Shop> I'll get that fixed while eating lunch
[15:11:31] <cradek> it would be awesome if you also knew which words those are :-)
[15:11:49] <cradek> thanks
[15:11:55] <JT-Shop> I can take a good guess at them
[15:12:15] <skunkworks> oh - so you have a start and end point what has to be the right number of rotations+fractional of P
[15:12:15] <JT-Shop> now that I understand how it works
[15:12:43] <skunkworks> I had always done full circles - never thought of that...
[15:12:44] <JT-Shop> so if you program a 1/4 arc with P2 you get 1 1/4 turns
[15:13:36] * JT-Shop goes to see how the Discovery 308 feels about running today
[15:13:41] <cradek> JT-Shop: yes

[18:08:07] <jepler> cradek: I wonder whether there are bad consequences of using ceil() on the P value, so that you could specify 3.5 for 3 and a half turns...
[18:08:34] <jepler> it would change some existing gcode: P1.0000001 would currently specify one turn or less but would specify greater than one turn but less than two turns under my idea
[18:09:17] <andypugh> ceil (P - eps) ?
[18:09:40] <jepler> so that P0.999999 would do between 1 and 2 turns?
[18:09:50] <jepler> (if eps is > .000001)
[18:11:23] <andypugh> Well, as both are currently disallowed I don't think you need to worry about breaking existing code.
[18:12:02] <jepler> numbers close to whole numbers (within .001) are currently allowed
[18:12:03] <jepler> int p_value = round_to_int(block->p_number);
[18:12:03] <jepler> CHKS(((motion == G_2 || motion == G_3 || (block->m_modes[7] == 19)) &&
[18:12:06] <jepler> fabs(p_value - block->p_number) > 0.001),
[18:12:09] <jepler> _("P value not an integer with M19 G2 or G3"));
[18:12:16] <jepler> so right now P1.0001 is accepted and means the same as P1
[18:12:39] <jepler> it's easiest to change nothing, I suppose
[18:12:42] <andypugh> Oh dear.
[18:14:28] <jepler> it's a typical pattern in rs274ngc, because the P-value might come from a calculation
[18:15:33] <jepler> for example if you knew the number of degrees of helix you wanted
[18:16:05] -!- Lathe_newbie| has quit [Ping timeout: 248 seconds]
[18:16:15] <andypugh> I was going to sugggest that it was unlikely, but actually it would be perfectly reasonable for a spiral milling operation with constrained depthper-pass
[18:16:33] <jepler> that's a good example too
[18:17:00] <jepler> though I think in these cases where you're calculating the value you'd end up using the fup[] function to perform the rounding to an integer in gcode
[18:17:19] <jepler> fup[#<depth>/#<depth_per_pass>]
[18:18:32] <jepler> fup is like ceil but with a stranger name
[18:20:10] <andypugh> A variant of "fix" I would guess.
[18:20:20] <jepler> yes
[18:20:25] <jepler> not short for f--- up
[18:22:17] <cradek> jepler: it would then happily accept overconstrained but inconsistent arcs
[18:23:11] <cradek> e.g. the ceil and endpoint give you 1 1/4 turns, but you've specified 1.53211 turns for some reason
[18:23:52] <jepler> cradek: I can see your point
[18:24:04] <cradek> I don't think it's a good idea to allow new kinds of errors go by unchecked, and I also think it's a bad idea to check them (making it really overconstrained and finicky to use, as well as breaking all existing code)
[18:24:38] <jepler> I think the problem is mostly the wording of the documentation
[18:24:38] <cradek> so my feeling is no, don't mess with it, it's fairly correct as-is
[18:25:24] <cradek> my feeling is the first sentence is poor, but the following few sentences clarify it, and in this case the guy stopped reading after the first sentence could be made to match what he expected to see
[18:25:34] <cradek> a better first sentence would be great
[18:26:42] <jepler> I didn't actually look at the docs but I read the sentence that was quoted in the message :-P
