[14:25:54] <seb_kuzminsky> the stepper drivers on the 3d printers at the boulder hackspace fail completely unless you cool them with a fan

[15:58:35] <seb_kuzminsky> about ja3... i finished the my first attempt at rebasing it onto master last night, but i accidentally introduced some discrepancies, so i'm tidying those up
[15:59:11] <seb_kuzminsky> some of the discrepancies are lack of bugs introduced by merge commits in the ja3 branch (since rebasing removes all the merges)
[16:00:14] <jepler> skunkworks: do the waveforms look right to your eye?
[16:00:14] <seb_kuzminsky> i'm now going through all the discrepancies between ja3 and my new ja4 branch, and figuring out which ones are "ja4 got rid of ja3 merge turds" and which ones are "seb messed up the rebase"
[16:00:34] <jepler> seb_kuzminsky: aha that's why you merged master into ja3
[16:00:39] <seb_kuzminsky> i'm leaving the first kind in (and compiling a list of them, noting which merge commits introduced the bugs in ja3)
[16:00:50] <seb_kuzminsky> i'm going back and re-rebasing ja4 to undo my hickups
[16:00:54] <seb_kuzminsky> jepler: yes
[16:01:06] <cradek> how different are they?
[16:01:21] <seb_kuzminsky> i merged master into ja3 (it had been a while...), then rebased ja3 onto the commit in master that i merged into ja3
[16:01:56] <seb_kuzminsky> that creates a situation where the final tree of ja3 should be equal to that of ja4, but they get there by different histories
[16:02:28] <seb_kuzminsky> cradek: it's mostly configs, but a couple of bloopers i introduced in emc/motion etc
[16:02:55] <seb_kuzminsky> the configs are all broken in ja3 (even before my merge), many don't start due to lack of [KINS] in the .ini
[16:03:29] <seb_kuzminsky> i'd like to finish ja4 (hopefully over the weekend...) and then we/i can go back and look at the configs with a critical eye, in ja4
[16:05:00] <seb_kuzminsky> err, my words above were wrong and ambiguous, let me clarify
[16:05:12] <jepler> wrong *and* ambiguous? are you sure they can be both?
[16:05:14] <seb_kuzminsky> i've not rebase the branch called joints_axes3, and i dont intend to
[16:07:07] <seb_kuzminsky> i created a new branch called "ja4", pointing at the head of joints_axes3, and i've been rebasing *it* (ja4)
[16:07:33] -!- mrsun has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[16:07:51] <seb_kuzminsky> ja3 is continuing like normal: merge master into it occasionally
[16:08:19] <skunkworks> jepler: yes - after I figured out you didn't have them in order ;)
[16:08:23] <seb_kuzminsky> ja4 is the tidied up version that will replace ja3 as the "active" joints_axes branch if i pull it off, and be fast-forward merged into master eventually

[19:43:35] <jepler> I think jon e's criticism of Propeller is not quite accurate. Each "cog" has 2kB of local RAM (von Neumann architecture) plus shared access to 32kB RAM + 32kB ROM. My impression is that it requires carefully writing code, but if your accesses to the shared memory happen on the right cycle it is relatively efficient (maybe no more than 2x the speed of the local RAM)
[19:44:30] <jepler> Propeller might not be a bad choice for step generators or encoder counters, because each cog could have one generate or read task
[19:56:08] <jepler> yes, you can read or write a long every 16 cycles from every cog, so your tight stepgen loop would involve copying frequency request from shared memory, adding it to your dds register, maybe outputting a step, and writing the new step count to shared memory. If the hub memory bandwidth is the limit, you can do that at 2.5MHz for a top step rate of 1.25MHz, not shabby at all.

[20:49:58] <KimK> seb_kuzminsky: (Re: your post of a couple days ago) So if I had already written a fix on the ja3 branch, and then if I had received your request to push fixes to ja4 instead, how could I "git" out of that problem? (I really need to read more about git.)
[20:50:58] <seb_kuzminsky> if you've pushed it to git.linuxcnc.org already, there's nothing you can do
[20:51:07] <seb_kuzminsky> if you haven't pushed it, you can do the following:
[20:51:23] <seb_kuzminsky> 1. use 'git cherry-pick' to copy the commit to the branch you want it on
[20:51:37] <seb_kuzminsky> 2. use 'git reset' or 'git rebase' to remove the commit from the branch it shouldn't be on
[20:52:09] <seb_kuzminsky> but we can't reset or rebase things that have been pushed to the shared repo, because that would mess everyone else up
[20:52:44] <KimK> Yes, "haven't pushed it" was what I intended to ask, sorry I wasn't clear on that.
