[00:55:59] <seb_kuzminsky> last night EMC bought dinner & drinks for all the attendees of this FreeBSD conference i'm at... i totally refrained from telling them they were jerks for sending their lawers after us
[00:57:01] <andypugh> I would have refrained until after I had finished eating.

[03:15:23] <cradek> when we were looking for big storage/backup solutions at work, I simply ruled them out
[03:16:30] <cradek> well to be fair, their lousy responses on bugtraq and NIH syndrome also both ruled them out
[03:17:45] <cradek> ha, still finding hidden rebranding stuff, thanks seb_kuzminsky

[23:06:57] <kwallace> Is TrueType-Tracer current, or is there another program that would be better as a base for developing an engraving utility?
[23:08:57] -!- rob_h has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds]
[23:09:07] <cradek> are you tracing font outlines specifically?
[23:09:45] <cradek> I don't know of any bugs or bit-rot in truetype tracer, so I think it's probably correct to say it's current
[23:09:58] <cradek> it's pretty special-purpose though
[23:15:04] -!- micges has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[23:18:47] <kwallace> I need something to fill out the rest of the g-code wizards, such as pocketing, drilling, and such. The engrave utility should be kept fairly simple, otherwise a CAM program should be used. The plan was to bang on TrueType-Tracer until I got something useful.
[23:19:32] -!- jfire has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
[23:19:41] <cradek> I've seen people ask for a gui for it. If it had one, more people would probably find it useful.
[23:19:55] <cradek> it's really good at what it does, especially now that it can fill the letters
[23:20:30] <cradek> but it's not a full application - more like a unixy building block
[23:21:29] <kwallace> The source I am looking at (4.0) doesn't seem to have the Fill feature, or it isn't obvious.
[23:22:09] -!- RagingComputer has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
[23:22:35] <kwallace> X, Y and Z offset going into the command line would be nice.
[23:25:04] <cradek> git://timeguy.com/truetype-tracer.git
[23:25:30] <cradek> 4.0-1 has fill (-l)
[23:26:19] <cradek> which is apparently not in the manpage
[23:28:04] -!- Servos4ever has quit [Quit: ChatZilla 0.9.90 [SeaMonkey 2.14.1/20121129191050]]
[23:29:18] <cradek> and -v doesn't work for some reason
[23:30:39] <kwallace> I'll give -l a try.
[23:31:46] <cradek> it takes a number that means ... something
[23:32:00] <cradek> if you change the number the fill ... changes
[23:34:22] <kwallace> Cool, it works. I used "./truetype-tracer -l 1 > ttt-1.ngc"
[23:34:41] <seb_kuzminsky> it's handy to have arguments that change things
[23:34:57] <seb_kuzminsky> that's a feature i look for in the programs i use
[23:35:01] <cradek> yes, yay!
[23:35:46] <cradek> also handy is the executable permission bit it's installed with. you wouldn't get far without that!
[23:36:10] <kwallace> I'm planning to massage the values in the UI app before they go to TTT.
[23:36:15] <seb_kuzminsky> heh
[23:36:43] <cradek> kwallace: it runs so fast - a preview that shows the output as you adjust the values would be cool
[23:36:50] <seb_kuzminsky> grr, why isnt my fetch fetching?
[23:37:00] <kwallace> I haven't noticed any permission issues so far.
[23:37:20] <cradek> I was being silly about that
[23:39:03] <kwallace> Oops, I'm so used to setting the executable bit if needed, I don't usually notice.

[23:40:48] <kwallace> The powers that be, want me to look into getting Gremlin to do dry-run-without-motion. That'll be a real challenge, for me at least.
[23:41:40] <cradek> you mean just move a thing along the lines that are already there?
[23:43:04] <kwallace> I suppose. I often click the first g-code line to highlight it, then step through.
[23:44:05] -!- skroon has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds]
[23:44:26] <cradek> the original HNC control had a toggle switch marked dry run. you could punt and tell them it's a hardware problem. in the manual put a reminder to home afterward.
[23:44:56] <cradek> (I'm about 40% serious)
[23:45:27] <kwallace> By the way, a new toy is coming, maybe tomorrow - a Canon GL1. Then I can make CNC videos.
[23:45:51] <cradek> (I kind of don't know why someone would want this... subtractive virtual workpiece cutting, sure)
[23:45:57] <cradek> cool
[23:46:33] <kwallace> www.ebay.com/itm/321126435172
[23:48:32] <kwallace> Also almost serious, but most of what I'm doing just needs to be there but won't really get used.
[23:48:49] <seb_kuzminsky> andypugh: the mesa_7i65 comp has no function, is that intentional?
[23:48:52] <cradek> sounds like a curse
[23:49:07] <andypugh> seb_kuzminsky: Yes.
[23:49:28] <andypugh> I had to have comp specially modified to allow that.
[23:49:39] <kwallace> On the other hand it can't have bugs either.
[23:49:59] <seb_kuzminsky> you missed a spot ;-)
[23:50:00] <andypugh> the component tells Hostmot2 that it wants to be called.
[23:50:21] <cradek> but the bug that nobody ever finds is not a bug
[23:51:04] <seb_kuzminsky> cradek: it's not a bug, it's technical debt!
[23:52:55] <kwallace> I need a Klingon bug cloak.
[23:53:17] <kwallace> It looks like there is a cloak bug: http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=238695

[23:54:19] <andypugh> seb_kuzminsky: Who missed a spot?
[23:56:27] <kwallace> Cradek: Oops, are there lic. issues with me using TTT?
