[16:29:28] <norbert> Is there a possibility to switch coolant On/OFF during auto mode and interpreter idle, without getting an linuxcnc error (MDI command not possible during interpreter run)? I wan't to make this with python code.
[16:29:56] <norbert> Sorry, not interpreter idle, Interpreter running
[16:46:21] <seb_kuzminsky> yes, i think so - flood/mist on/off can be controlled without mdi via (for example) the hal pin halui.flood.on
[16:46:50] <cradek> I think that will work only in manual mode
[16:47:02] <seb_kuzminsky> hmm
[16:47:32] <norbert> I will try with halshow to see what happend, one moment please
[16:47:42] <cradek> some machines have a hard switch marked off/on/auto so you can override what the gcode wants
[16:48:27] <norbert> I now, but my testers (gmoccapy) wan't a GUI solution.
[16:48:36] <seb_kuzminsky> it looks to me like task will issue EMC_COOLANT_FLOOD_{ON,OFF} immediately, even in Auto
[16:48:44] <cradek> (weirdly these usually say hand/off/auto)
[16:48:46] <seb_kuzminsky> but maybe i'm missing something, i'd trust cradek over me on this!
[16:49:05] <cradek> it's not a matter of trust, it's a matter of trying it :-)
[16:49:57] <seb_kuzminsky> should be easy to test, sim/axis/axis.ini has halui, so norbert you could start that up and poke the pin via halcmd
[16:50:08] <seb_kuzminsky> let us know what you find!
[16:50:34] <cradek> bbl, lunch
[16:50:44] <seb_kuzminsky> seeya chris!
[16:51:17] -!- dway has quit [Quit: NOOOOOOooooooooo……]
[16:54:07] <norbert> So I just tested it, it gives the same error, if you switch arround, but on the first try it just didn't switch the coolant without giving any message.
[16:55:52] <seb_kuzminsky> so you were in auto mode running a program, and you set halui.flood.on to 1, and it did not turn on the flood (halui.flood.is-on stayed at 0) and it printed an error message in your terminal?
[16:56:12] <norbert> The result is EMC_COOLANT_OFF can not been executed during auto mode (translated from german)
[16:56:55] <norbert> I made it exactly like you mentioned
[16:58:42] <seb_kuzminsky> yes, i re-read the code and i see that it does what you reported
[16:59:31] <seb_kuzminsky> looks like linuxcnc can't do what you want... :-(
[17:00:23] <seb_kuzminsky> though i don't know why
[17:00:37] <seb_kuzminsky> i mean, i don't know why the thing you're asking for is not allowed by task
[17:00:51] <norbert> I can't also not see a reason for that limitation.
[17:01:12] <norbert> Many times it is usefull to see what hapen in your machine.
[17:01:49] <norbert> So there will only be the posibility to make my own pins ;-((
[17:09:44] <pcw_home> Dont task and motion must predate HAL?
[17:12:39] <norbert> @pcw_home : Sorry can't follow you
[17:13:15] -!- mourner has quit [Quit: mourner]
[17:13:32] -!- Icekiller has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
[17:14:30] <pcw_home> Theres is so much hardwired behavior in task and motion
[17:14:32] <pcw_home> that might be better parceled into a set of HAL comps
[17:15:43] <norbert> And also the limitations should be loosened!
[17:16:18] <norbert> But I am not able to do it :-(
[17:16:35] <seb_kuzminsky> norbert: the thing you want is forbidden by Task (the core controller of linuxcnc), so you can't easily make a comp to fix it
[17:16:54] -!- gambakufu has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
[17:17:53] <mhaberler> probably the distinction between auto and MDI needs to be removed and replaced by a 'execute(source)' where source is either a ngc file or a string
[17:18:00] <pcw_home> he can build over-ride logic in his GUI (patching around task)
[17:18:31] <seb_kuzminsky> when task decides to turn flood coolant on, iocontrol.0.flood-coolant turns true, you could maybe add some hal logic between that pin and the actual output pin that controls the coolant pump
[17:19:00] <seb_kuzminsky> for example, "or" the iocontrol pin with a gui button, that would let you turn on flood coolant even if the program had it off
[17:19:13] <seb_kuzminsky> but it won't let you turn off coolant if the program has it on, you'd need different hal logic for that
[17:19:37] <seb_kuzminsky> but i really wonder why task forbids the coolant control commands in this situation
[17:19:58] <seb_kuzminsky> i wonder if it's an oversight or if there's some real reason for it
[17:20:00] -!- phantoxeD has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
[17:20:10] <seb_kuzminsky> oh well, back to my day job
[17:20:16] <mhaberler> i think it's this silly mode distinction
[17:21:04] <mhaberler> I've never understood the justification of auto vs mdi being different modes - all I see is different input sources, and different lengths
[17:21:15] <norbert> Making an "self made solution" is not the problem, but all users must rewire ther hal connections if they wan't to use my GUI.
[17:21:58] <norbert> So what I wan't is a solution where the users needn't to touch there configs.

[18:01:34] -!- IchGuckLive has quit [Quit: ChatZilla 0.9.87 [Firefox 20.0/20130329043827]]
[18:07:38] <cradek> again this is not a gui issue and a gui hackaround is a very poor solution, although I really understand the urge
[18:08:22] <cradek> I would support your decision to dig in and fix it right, which would let it work for any/all the UIs.
[18:09:03] -!- mozmck [mozmck!~moses@client-204.235.45.161.wcfltx.partnershipbroadband.com] has joined #linuxcnc-devel
[18:09:58] <cradek> my boss8 had a fairly intricate implementation of this. if you started a program that had no coolant instructions, it stayed off. while the program was running, you could poke the coolant button to turn it on. after this, the coolant would turn on and off with the spindle for the rest of the program, just exactly like if there had been a coolant-on gcode in the program.
[18:10:35] <cradek> my point is that it's not ONLY an issue of letting the messages through. it probably requires some more thought and design than is immediately apparent.
[18:11:03] <cradek> (if the program turned on coolant, and then you turned it off, it probably stayed off for the rest of the program, but I am not positive)
[18:11:46] <pcw_home> so all edge triggered for program or manual should work?
[18:12:13] <cradek> pretty sure that wouldn't be enough to do what I described
[18:12:42] <cradek> it requres memory of whether the user did any kind of manual override during this program run
[18:13:20] <pcw_home> oh so once in manual it sticks in manual mode?
[18:13:43] <cradek> not exactly, since it still turned on and off with the spindle
[18:14:47] -!- jfire has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[18:15:20] <cradek> I suppose their implementation was to have the button interject exactly the equivalent of the M8 gcode
[18:16:03] -!- chillly has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[18:16:05] <pcw_home> right so theres a fair amount of logic (just what task needs, more hardwired logic)
[18:17:57] <cradek> tempting to think of this as "splice an M8 into the VPT" but you want to be able to do it during a motion
[18:18:19] <seb_kuzminsky> cradek, do you know why task allows FLOOD_ON/OFF in On/Auto/Idle and On/Auto/Paused, but not in On/Auto/Reading or On/Auto/Waiting?
[18:18:44] <seb_kuzminsky> i dont see what interp's state (idle/paused/reading/waiting) has to do with the availability of this immediate nml command
[18:18:48] <cradek> that it's allowed in on/auto/paused surprises me
[18:19:13] <cradek> but no, I don't know why it has the restrictions it does
[18:20:04] <seb_kuzminsky> coolant on/off seems so separate from everything else, i'd think the user would be allowed to mess with it at any time, and task would issue the command
[18:20:53] <cradek> I suppose one could just try allowing it and see what happens
[18:21:06] <cradek> it won't be smart in the way I described, but it might be good enough
[18:22:46] <seb_kuzminsky> i'm trying exactly that right now...
[18:24:10] <seb_kuzminsky> we don't have any coolant tests, so i guess i dont have any idea what the impact of this change is

[18:37:39] <seb_kuzminsky> norbert: try that branch, or the debs built from it (in the 'scratch' deb archive), it should allow manual control of flood & mist coolant at all times, via (for example) the halui pins

[19:50:20] <seb_kuzminsky> cradek: why does it surprise you that manual coolant control is allowed in on/auto/paused?
[19:50:52] <cradek> because I thought those manual controls only worked in manual mode
[19:51:17] <cradek> no other reason

[20:07:54] <seb_kuzminsky> i ran the splash screen gcode and poked halui.flood.{on,off}, and the halui.flood.is-on did the expected thing, with no error messages popping up anywhere i could see
[20:08:03] <cradek> now just beat all the other guis with a stick until they allow it
[20:08:15] <cradek> if they don't mistakenly allow it already...

[20:10:47] <seb_kuzminsky> in axis there's a little checkbox for flood and one for mist, while it's running a program it doesnt let you click it
[20:10:57] <seb_kuzminsky> but if you turn on flood via halui the checkbox gets checked
[20:10:59] <cradek> beat beat beat
[20:11:14] <cradek> there's an F-key too
[20:12:23] <seb_kuzminsky> axis also doesnt let you check the flood box if it's paused, even though i think task does
[20:12:52] <seb_kuzminsky> oh yeah, f8 toggles flood
[20:14:00] <seb_kuzminsky> f8 works like clicking the checkbox, it works when the program is stopped but not if it's running or paused
[20:14:07] <cradek> for a good time, consider whether spindle increase/decrease should be allowed too
[20:15:31] <seb_kuzminsky> i would want it to
[20:15:36] <seb_kuzminsky> it looks like it already is

[20:19:06] <seb_kuzminsky> axis doesnt respond to f11/f12 while running, but halui.spindle.increase and halui.spindle.decrease cause motion.spindle-speed-out-rps to change as expected
[20:19:18] <seb_kuzminsky> that's while axis is runnign a program
[20:19:23] <seb_kuzminsky> this agrees with my reading of task
