[17:40:03] <seb_kuzminsky> jepler: no, it's unfortunately not quite that simple
[17:40:16] <seb_kuzminsky> different builds have different debian configure arguments
[17:40:51] <seb_kuzminsky> mhaberler: the schedulers that run the builds supply properties to the builds
[17:41:03] <seb_kuzminsky> different schedulers give different properties
[17:41:25] <seb_kuzminsky> one of the properties is 'deb-configure', and it's either 'sim' for sim-builds or '-a' for realtime builds

[18:53:22] <norbert> Hay, can somebody tell me, how I can change a hal connection I made in my postgui_hal file? I connect there "net X-Pos halui.axis.0.pos-relative => gscreen.hal_lbl_X_pos and i want to execute unlinkp halui.axis.0.pos-relative and after that I want to reconect the hal label like this: net X-Pos halui.axis.0.pos-commanded => gscreen.hal_lbl_X_pos. How can I do this from a Python handler file?
[18:54:23] <seb_kuzminsky> norbert: i'm not sure how to do it from python, but linking and unlinking pins from halcmd is easy, as you described
[18:55:33] <norbert> Yes, but I need to do it within my python handler file, so the DRO show the thinks I want. I hope I dont have to do ist using a shell script.
[18:56:36] <micges> norbert: from python quickest is to run halcmd in it
[18:56:48] <micges> os.system("halcmd bla bla bla")
[18:57:01] <norbert> I will try it right now.
[18:57:43] <micges> make sure you have halcmd in PATH

[19:30:35] <norbert> @jepler : I made the connection with the mux2, it is working too. Now I have to decide what is easear for the user of my screen, to modify the postgui hal file, or making the code so the user have no work with it.
[19:35:30] -!- norbert has quit [Quit: Verlassend]
[19:38:49] <jepler> I think it's very antisocial for a component to modify a hal connection. it depends on a lot of things, such as the signal name being spelled in a predictable matter, and it resists further user customizations (what if they want to mux more than 2 sources of data into that single destination?)

[21:39:55] <mhaberler> there is one thing I do not understand: configure (master) does not mention libboost-python-dev : http://git.linuxcnc.org/gitweb?p=linuxcnc.git;a=blob;f=debian/configure;h=34eb65e14f019079980b095270970da0d4921587;hb=5f6cd02aeb0337f93a77a41b56c111d5bc694a17 - why does that work?
[21:44:14] <jepler> mhaberler: libboost-python-dev is a non-varying build dependency, so it's in debian/control.in
[21:44:17] <jepler> 13 gettext, autoconf, libboost-python-dev,
[21:44:56] <mhaberler> oops. Looked at master/configure and v2.5_branch/debian/* .. thanks
[21:46:32] <jepler> aha
[21:47:53] <mhaberler> is there any connection between the debian/configure run and the arguments to src/configure?
[21:49:07] <jepler> no
[21:49:21] <jepler> see debian/rules for how dpkg-buildpackage will invoke src/configure
[21:49:52] <mhaberler> ah
[21:50:31] <mhaberler> sorta.. it rests on the $(kernel_version) replaced variable
[21:54:50] <mhaberler> hm. For debian/configure to have the best set of variable replacement for src/configure, it should actually run src/configure :-/
[21:58:05] <jepler> no, because debian/configure uses knowledge about available packages on a given distribution to fill out the list of packages to be treated as build dependencies
[21:58:19] <jepler> this has nothing to do with src/configure, which looks at what is installed
[21:59:09] <jepler> it would be nice if that knowledge was automated somehow (apt-cache show python | grep Version or something) but the payoff is small for something that doesn't have to be done often and would be fiddly to script
[21:59:52] <mhaberler> well right - and it now needs to detect the kernel type which wasnt necessary except vanilla vs RTAI so far; fortunately we have a firm set of kernel type autodetection rules which works without looking at version strings
[22:01:01] <mhaberler> this one does it without string guesswork: http://git.mah.priv.at/gitweb/emc2-dev.git/blob/fb96f1cb26c443cfce4b5f366e4ca8336b19eb2f:/src/rtapi/rtapi_kdetect.c
[22:01:54] <jepler> there must be zero requirement that the realtime kernel is the compile-time kernel
[22:01:59] <mhaberler> however, that assumes a running kernel;
[22:02:16] <jepler> in both debian/configure and src/configure
[22:02:23] <mhaberler> well in that case it's required to dig the Kconfig to tell them apart
[22:02:39] <mhaberler> and that is in src/configure.in ;)
[22:03:01] <jepler> that seems fine
[22:03:14] <jepler> debian/configure should only help depend on the desired kernel package by name
[22:03:36] <jepler> though I don't know all the details of what it will be necessary to pass to configure

[22:04:05] <jepler> to src/configure
[22:04:27] <mhaberler> ok, but in that case the buildbot actually does two things: build package - no current kernel dependency; runtests - results depend on running kernel
[22:05:18] <jepler> yes and so?

[22:06:24] -!- racycle has quit [Quit: racycle]
[22:07:26] <mhaberler> realistically a build+runtests job for kernel X must be directed to a buildbot slave which runs X - not because of package build but because of runtests
[22:07:49] <jepler> I'm not very familiar with buildbot
[22:08:44] <mhaberler> not sure if it is the case that currently all buildbot slaves run RTAI - that would explain that runtests always succeeds
[22:08:47] <jepler> but it's important to me to preserve the fact that I can build for a realtime flavor on a vanilla box; in the past I frequently did this in the past
[22:09:13] <mhaberler> sure, that works just fine with src/configure
[22:09:14] <jepler> sure I couldn't run the runtests but if it was a matter of stuff like "is that function available for linking" it was nice
[22:09:44] <jepler> and it also works for package building with debian/configure right now
[22:10:00] <jepler> so rewind what I said just a bit and say I want to make sure the package builds
[22:10:23] <jepler> again on a vanilla machine but for some realtime flavor
[22:11:10] <jepler> bbl
[22:11:25] <mhaberler> yes, the current requirements are kernel headers for kernel thread styles and the xenomai userland support package for all xenomai thread styles; no requirement on running kernel

[22:12:50] <micges> mhaberler: can you send me once again link to libtinfo5 package?
