[00:18:49] <PCW> andypugh: around?
[00:19:10] <andypugh> Aye
[00:19:55] <PCW> do you know the git incantations needed to apply your patch?
[00:21:05] <andypugh> should just be git am when in the src directory
[00:25:15] <PCW> ok...
[00:25:39] <andypugh> What happens?
[00:27:41] <PCW> ok looks good
[00:27:59] <andypugh> man setsserial should have instructions
[00:28:05] <PCW> lets try breaking a 8I20...
[00:29:09] <andypugh> breaking 8i20s is my job!
[00:29:20] <andypugh> (I see that mine got delivered)
[00:29:53] <PCW> Yesterday
[00:30:19] <andypugh> I guess I wsn't imagining their broken-ness?
[00:30:59] <PCW> we dumper your ROM in case the contents prove diagnostic so we will use yours as guinea pigs again
[00:31:10] <PCW> ROMs
[00:31:52] <PCW> I need to change the FPGA card type and channel in your test file
[00:32:28] <andypugh> Ah, yes.
[00:34:54] <kwallace> At line 1494 here: http://git.linuxcnc.org/gitweb?p=linuxcnc.git;a=blob;f=lib/python/rs274/glcanon.py;h=7eec004944df2e04ea21d6f6fd4ef89f91df1907;hb=HEAD lathe_shapes gets set outside of lathe_tool at line 1500. Why not have lathe_shapes set inside of lathe_tool where it is used?
[00:36:25] -!- syyl has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[00:37:42] <andypugh> Pythoin is a mystery to me
[00:38:06] <JT-Shop> it's a snake you know
[00:45:14] -!- odogono has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
[00:45:30] <PCW> Hmm cant find setserial.ko
[00:47:01] <PCW> just applied patch/make clean/make is there something else needed in the make file to install new modules?
[00:48:26] <kwallace> Well, it seems to work, but I would hate to break LinuxCNC proper. Near the bottom here: http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Gremlin
[00:51:17] -!- modmaker has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
[00:54:09] <andypugh> PCW: I am not sure.
[00:54:19] <andypugh> Did the makefile get changed at all?
[00:55:21] <andypugh> Is setsserial a comp?
[00:55:29] <andypugh> I can't remember.
[00:56:44] <andypugh> No, it's plain C
[00:57:37] -!- adb has quit [Ping timeout: 248 seconds]
[00:58:01] <andypugh> It may be that the makefile changes didn't get included
[00:59:57] <andypugh> Are you in Master or 2,5?
[01:00:07] <PCW> master
[01:00:28] <andypugh> Odd.
[01:01:18] <PCW> it made setserial.o just didnt make or install? setserial.ko
[01:01:41] <andypugh> If you look in the makefile, is setsserial mentioned in lines 741 and 774?
[01:02:05] <PCW> looking...
[01:02:21] -!- skorasaurus has quit [Quit: left the building.]
[01:04:36] <PCW> yes
[01:05:33] <andypugh> I am puzzled then.
[01:05:44] <andypugh> the compile stage is a bit of a mystery to me.
[01:06:11] -!- joe9 [joe9!~joe9@c-24-98-97-215.hsd1.ga.comcast.net] has joined #linuxcnc-devel
[01:06:15] <PCW> some permissions thing? (actual first error is 'error inserting longpath/setserial.ko operation not permitted')
[01:06:26] <andypugh> It's also very late here.
[01:06:35] <PCW> yes
[01:06:38] <andypugh> Hopefully someone Linux-y can help.
[01:06:51] <andypugh> Ah, sudo make setuid?
[01:07:02] <PCW> yes did that
[01:07:39] <PCW> the error comes when sourcing test.hal
[01:07:51] <andypugh> Seems odd, as the simpler setsserial is already there in master.
[01:08:22] <andypugh> Ah, it might just be that it's like that
[01:08:39] <andypugh> quietly quitting a loadrt is tricky.
[01:09:02] <andypugh> Are you running a second window with the kernel log tailed into it like the manpage says?
[01:09:16] <PCW> no but i can
[01:09:33] <andypugh> Well, just dmesg will have the same info.
[01:09:51] <andypugh> It might even say "flashing success" :-)
[01:13:07] -!- plushy has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
[01:14:18] <andypugh> OK PCW, I really do need to sleep now.
[01:14:25] -!- andypugh has quit [Quit: andypugh]

[13:58:17] <dgarr> a small bugfix, for consideration: http://www.panix.com/~dgarrett/stuff/0001-emcmodule.cc-fail-gracefully-for-linuxcnc.ini.patch
[14:12:33] <KGB-linuxcnc> 03dgarrett 05v2.5_branch 209108a 06emc2 10src/emc/usr_intf/axis/extensions/emcmodule.cc * emcmodule.cc: fail gracefully for linuxcnc.ini()

[14:25:03] <jepler> hmmm
[14:28:21] <jepler> this has sent me reading documentation, and there's another uncommon oddity that the code doesn't handle right
[14:28:37] <jepler> my first concern was whether self->i was guaranteed zero-initialized (it is)
[14:28:59] <jepler> BUT for a given object, it's possible to call Ini_init multiple times, and this leaks file descriptors
[14:29:50] <jepler> http://pastebin.com/7c0zr0Jv
[14:30:30] <jepler> it eventually fails (and with a problem generating the error report!) because it hits the file descriptor limit
[14:31:42] <jepler> ah, and the patch isn't right because it fails to PyObject_Del(self), so it's a memory leak
[14:32:12] <dgarr> i hope you fix it the right way -- i just didn't like the segfault:)
[14:32:23] <jepler> I don't blame you
[14:32:27] <jepler> thanks for making me look anyway
[14:32:29] <jepler> er, too
[14:37:13] <jepler> why oh why isn't there IniFile::~IniFile which calls Close() when appropriate?
[14:37:17] <jepler> oh well
[14:38:07] <jepler> anybody want to poke holes in this before I push it to 2.5? http://emergent.unpythonic.net/files/sandbox/0001-Don-t-leak-file-descriptors-or-memory-when-abused.patch
[14:41:25] <dgarr> i was looking at the linuxcnc class to see if there could be a way to implement a method (in stat?) that returned the name of the inifile in use

[23:20:43] <andypugh> Odd that it should detect non-blank blocks, but then write blank...
[23:20:59] <PCW> at least it doesnt break the setup area anymore
[23:21:50] <andypugh> The likely problem is that the memcpy isn't loading data properly.
