[21:10:42] <memleak> hello!
[21:11:50] <zultron> Hi, memleak, thanks for the kernel config.
[21:13:07] <memleak> No problem. Please note that for 32-bit and I haven't even tested that specific config as I am on AMD64.
[21:13:54] <zultron> I tried it out, and it doesn't seem to apply directly to the 3.5.3 kernel; 'make oldconfig' asks questions. Did I misunderstand which kernel version or something?
[21:14:11] <memleak> Odd..
[21:14:21] <zultron> Also, it's going to be a big problem if wireless drivers aren't supported, as you said above.
[21:15:20] <zultron> The 'minimal differences' config online that I mentioned is online here:
https://github.com/zultron/kernel-tools/tree/master/configs
[21:15:46] <memleak> it's really just a "here is how some minimalist performance obsessed person got xenomai working well"
[21:17:40] <zultron> You mean your config is for people who put the greatest stress on performance?
[21:17:52] <memleak> I can modify it and make it 100x more bloat but i'll need some time to do that. A good rule of thumb in my opinion, copy certain sections as close as possible to ubuntu kernel config, USB, HID, SATA, PATA, networking, graphics settings (DRM) and laptop / WMI stuff
[21:18:03] <memleak> greatest stress?
[21:18:09] <zultron> greatest emphasis
[21:18:53] <memleak> I still don't quite get what you're implying, my vocabulary is awfully limited. It's performance is as tweaked as I could get it, hence it's minimalism
[21:19:02] <zultron> Got it.
[21:20:08] <memleak> smaller, more optimized smaller kernels (which is practically a habit of mine now) offer better / lower latency. if i were you, i'd modify the non-processor, non-system / critical settings toward ubuntu's options
[21:21:13] <memleak> all the latency harmless stuff. for example it'd be hard picturing extra network adapters having a big impact on performance.
[21:21:24] <zultron> How hard would it be to start from the Ubuntu stock config, and while leaving in 'bloat' so that the great variety of hardware is still supported, tweak it for Xenomai, with at least a little explanation for each tweak?
[21:22:03] <zultron> Something like that would be easier to convince the community to go along with.
[21:22:13] <memleak> If you can find me a stock, unmodified ubuntu kernel config with a version as close as possible to 3.5.3, i could do that!
[21:22:46] <memleak> like if ubuntu 11.something or 12.XX 13, whatever, at its around 3.6 or 3.5, sure! allow me!
[21:22:48] <zultron> Aside from support lots of systems, it would also help the next kernel tweaker when it's time to upgrade xenomai and the kernel.
[21:23:22] <memleak> by an explanation for each tweak, you mean why i disabled that feature?
[21:23:38] <zultron> 1 sec, phone
[21:24:15] <L84Supper> they want to start with a giant stock Ubuntu kernel and make the changes to support RTAi or xenomai
[21:24:53] <memleak> I understand that. "with at least a little explanation for each tweak?" is the part I'm confused about.
[21:24:58] <L84Supper> maybe somebody can post the stock ubuntu kernel config
[21:25:39] <L84Supper> they mean try to explain the changes necessary to support RTAO or xenomai
[21:25:45] <L84Supper> RTAI
[21:25:53] <L84Supper> not sure what RTAO is :)
[21:27:18] <L84Supper> so if you were to disappear somebody else could make the changes to support RTAI or Xenomai
[21:27:32] <L84Supper> in the future
[21:28:37] <L84Supper> posting the working kernel configs is enough for now, it's not like you have nothing else to do :)

[21:37:14] <zultron> Check the link I posted. The stock 3.5.3 kernel config is in there.
[21:37:23] <zultron> For 32 and 64 bit.
[21:37:53] <zultron> Also, the changes I needed for RH-like distros, so far untested on Ubuntu.
[21:38:53] <zultron> Those changes are probably more documented than necessary, but that's the idea: tell the next tweaker exactly what was changed, at least, and an idea of why.
[21:39:58] -!- FinboySlick has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
[21:40:27] <zultron> The Ubuntu/Deb kernel configs can also be found by downloading the source package and piecing together the split parts.
[21:40:52] <memleak> RH-based distros I believe won't even boot with vanilla kernels, rather needing tons of exclusive patches from the red hat team.
[21:41:19] <memleak> err not vanilla, I meant any kernel that isn't developed specifically for Red Hat.
[21:41:19] <zultron> Yeah, that's right. I spent a lot of time dealing with that.
[21:42:29] <memleak> I'm basing my config off Ubuntu because I can already tell you the red hat config wouldn't even be compatible for a xenomai / vanilla kernel. wayy too many changes.
[21:42:31] <zultron> They have patches to the build scripts, and in RHEL6, they stopped breaking out the patches to make Oracle's life harder, so anyone wanting a custom kernel package will have a tough time.
[21:42:54] <memleak> Plus i've done some ubuntu kernel development a few years ago so i know their structure.
[21:42:59] <zultron> Yeah, I just package the vanilla kernel for RH-like distros.
[21:43:34] <zultron> The Xenomai patch applied to the Ubuntu 3.5.3 released kernel with only one failed hunk. That wouldn't be possible in RH.
[21:44:37] <memleak> I'm not touching any kernel source not from kernel.org to apply the xenomai patch to
[21:44:57] <memleak> I'm basing only the mere kernel config from ubuntu to the upstream vanilla kernel after being patched with xenomai
[21:45:06] -!- vladimirek has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[21:45:26] <zultron> That sounds great.
[21:46:09] <memleak> :) Yeah i never touch distro-specific kernel source. For this particular project I'm only reworking the ubuntu kernel config, and only the config, just to get wifi going and all that stuff.
[21:46:49] <memleak> i dont want to manually turn on thousands of features which i explicitly disabled. short-cut method :D
[21:47:19] <zultron> That's exactly what I hoped for.
[21:47:56] <memleak> Good, i'm glad we're all on the same page :)
[21:48:17] <zultron> Did you look at what I did?
https://github.com/zultron/kernel-tools/blob/master/configs/config-xenomai-amd64
[21:48:58] <zultron> If you said the comments were overly verbose, I might agree, but the purpose was to help out the next guy.
[21:49:04] <memleak> CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR=y should be disabled on everything since this is xenomai
[21:50:30] <zultron> So, you point out a good example there. There's a link and a note there that explain why it's still turned on.
[21:50:45] <zultron> x86_64 arch only, per
http://www.xenomai.org/documentation/xenomai-2.6/html/TROUBLESHOOTING/index.html#kconf
[21:51:03] <memleak> xenomai number values can be bumped, CONFIG_XENO_HW_SMI_WORKAROUND should be enabled too, SMI doesnt ever do any good.
[21:51:06] <zultron> And if you look at the i386 conf, you'll see it's turned off.
[21:51:20] <memleak> also legacy should be on ;)
[21:51:37] <zultron> Ahh, now that's the kind of advice we need! Keep it coming!
