[02:08:01] -!- seb_kuzminsky [seb_kuzminsky!~seb@174-16-117-148.hlrn.qwest.net] has joined #emc-devel
[02:08:15] <seb_kuzminsky> hola
[02:10:53] <cradek> hey!
[02:11:20] <cradek> do you know you're my hero for working on packaging?
[02:12:06] <seb_kuzminsky> heh
[02:12:23] <seb_kuzminsky> i feel like a dunce for taking like three commits, to our most stable branch, to get it not totally broken
[02:12:46] <cradek> well, at least you don't leave it broken for someone else to find.
[02:12:48] <seb_kuzminsky> i have the buildbot config ready to go for stashing the release builds, i think
[02:12:55] <cradek> slick
[02:13:37] <seb_kuzminsky> once it's finished building the master push I just did, I'm going to bounce the buildbot and rebuild once, and if that works i'd like to talk to you about making 2.5.0-pre2 ;-)
[02:14:01] <seb_kuzminsky> it looks like all our releases up until now have tags signed by Jeff's personal key
[02:14:25] <seb_kuzminsky> do you want to continue with that or is there another key or keys to use?
[02:14:27] <cradek> for some definition of "all"
[02:14:48] <cradek> seems like I could sign the tags with my key or the shared board key
[02:15:36] <seb_kuzminsky> any public keys I add to the buildbot's keyring will be allowed to make emc2 releases...
[02:15:42] <seb_kuzminsky> so far it's just jeff
[02:17:43] <seb_kuzminsky> all the tags matching "v2*" are signed by jeff, except for 2.5.0-pre1 and 2.6.0-pre0, which were made by me and not tagged
[02:18:06] <cradek> perhaps add 1024g/5C04EC87 2003-03-14 "Chris Radek <chris@timeguy.com>"
[02:18:17] <seb_kuzminsky> ok hold on
[02:18:24] <cradek> that's my main personal key
[02:19:01] <seb_kuzminsky> what's the name for the 32 bits after the key size? 5C04.... on yours
[02:19:12] <cradek> fingerprint?
[02:19:14] <seb_kuzminsky> jeff's collides with some guy named Odd Elie or something
[02:19:19] <seb_kuzminsky> no the fingerprint is much bigger
[02:20:44] <cradek> oh you're right

[20:19:23] <moopy> cradek, any chance my hal config app could go inthe next release of emc??
[20:20:04] <cradek> do you mean 2.5?
[20:20:14] <moopy> ideally yes
[20:20:26] <moopy> but i been told 2.5 is bug fixes only
[20:20:38] <cradek> yes we're trying to stabilize and release 2.5
[20:21:05] <andypugh> I am broadly in favour of a generalised HAL-editor, but does it do anything not covered by stepconf and pncconf?
[20:21:24] <moopy> unfortunatly i really don't have time to do much with emc, but I sort of feel maybe if the code went in a release then more people may test it and give bug reports
[20:21:43] <andypugh> (Personally I would like to see a graphical editor, like Simulink or LabView)
[20:22:13] <andypugh> And, if you are expecting bug reports, it probably isn't ready for a "production" release.
[20:22:33] <moopy> I don't think many if any people have tried my config app
[20:22:35] <cradek> if the code is not proven, and doesn't come with a maintainer's promise, we're less likely to incorporate it. this is something the board would have to discuss.
[20:23:05] <moopy> well I have never had any feedback on the app yet
[20:23:13] <cradek> moopy: I don't think I've seen any talk of it. have you mentioned it on the mailing lists?
[20:23:32] <moopy> only discussed it on irc a few times
[20:23:41] <moopy> I wrote it a year ago
[20:23:51] <andypugh> I was vaguely aware of it. (Halitosis) but when I looked at the web site it wasn't quite what I expected.
[20:24:06] <moopy> http://www.soundproofingforum.co.uk/halitosis/
[20:24:49] <moopy> its sort of like stepconf wizard but for servos and steppers, and it uses DH joint configs
[20:24:56] <cradek> "Its really just a sketch and proof of concept, and many ideas have been started then discarded yet remnants are still left in the code."
[20:25:13] <cradek> if this is still true, it sure doesn't belong in the stable branch at this late stage
[20:25:27] <moopy> you are probably right
[20:25:29] <andypugh> As for the dhkins, I think that is already covered by genserkins?
[20:26:17] <moopy> not quite, the dhkins has been hacked to add the theta variable of DH, and also can have upto 16 stacked joints
[20:26:27] <andypugh> Though Genserkins doesn't do prismatic joints (Viesteurs added it, but I don't think it got committed)
[20:27:20] <cradek> maybe I don't understand really what the program does - why is a webcam involved?
[20:27:34] <moopy> if DH kinmatics are properly implemented then all other serial kines could be removed from emc
[20:28:35] <moopy> I was using for config a robot arm with a webcam and wass going to use pyCV to analyse when the arm should grab an object
[20:32:02] <andypugh> moopy: Genserkins is a general DH kinematics. It doesn't (yet) do prismatic joints, and I think it only handles 9 joints, but it is probably more backwards-compatible to modify that than to add a new kins.
[20:32:25] <andypugh> (I can't believe how negative I am sounding about all this)
[20:33:28] <moopy> dhkins is a modified version of genserkins, but I added the theta variable (prismatic), to allow all serial kines to be created
[20:34:11] <moopy> the halitosis is really just an updated version of step conf wizard
[20:35:50] <andypugh> moopy: In that case (and if it absolutely, definitely, works) you should submit that as a patch to gensrkins rather than as a new kins.
[20:35:51] <moopy> but you define the DH parameters and drive outputs for each joint, the configurator then creates a (faulty) vismach simulation, VCP, and hal file for the joints defined
[20:37:12] <moopy> unfortunatly its just a hobby project, I never got round to fully testing it as I have become too busy
[20:38:17] <alex_joni> andypugh: genserkins is able to drive prismativ joints
[20:38:32] <alex_joni> it's just missing maybe 15 minutes of love :D
[20:38:51] <alex_joni> the hal pin part doesn't cope with that, but the rest is there
[20:38:57] <andypugh> alex_joni: Indeed, Viesteurs has alsready submitted a prisnatic patch once.
[20:39:17] <alex_joni> right
[20:39:25] <alex_joni> but it still can't replace a trivkins
[20:39:44] <moopy> why cannot replace trivkins?
[20:40:03] <alex_joni> moopy: because of the way emc2 is built
[20:40:12] <andypugh> The main issue is that we don't want to require folk to switch from joint to world mode for a trivial machine.
[20:40:15] <alex_joni> trivkins runs as KINEMATICS_IDENTITY
[20:40:23] <alex_joni> genserkins is KINEMATICS_BOTH
[20:40:32] <alex_joni> switching between modes is different
[20:41:00] <alex_joni> andypugh: right, for trivkins it's as if joint mode doesn't exist
[20:42:35] <andypugh> Can I hal_malloc a single hal_bit_t variable? Or do I have to hide it in a struct so that it isn't already initialised at malloc-time?
[20:42:54] -!- MuPie [MuPie!~moopy@82.152.150.86] has joined #emc-devel
[20:43:11] <andypugh> Is MuPie moopy?
[20:43:32] <MuPie> well, I doubt I will be working on the halitosis code for a while yet, I hoped if it went in a release of emc someone else may pick it up
[20:43:58] <MuPie> yes, my connection is always cutting out
[20:44:31] -!- moopy has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds]
[20:46:12] <MuPie> is pncconf in the emc release yet?
[20:46:47] <andypugh> I think one problem with that idea is that anyone who can complete a HAL configurator probably doesn't need a Hal configurator, so has little incentive.
[20:47:20] <MuPie> the configurator save a lot of typing
[20:47:48] <MuPie> I get the feeling I had a similar conversation to this a few months ago
[20:48:16] <MuPie> well, I don't want to force the code into a release if no one is interested
[20:48:58] <MuPie> I think it probably need a fair amount of work to get it working perfectly
[20:49:22] <MuPie> but I think the code is probably alot cleaner and more maintainable than pncconf
[20:50:38] <andypugh> There is a lady linux coder appeared on the forum. Does it make me a bad person that I assume she is transgender?
[20:51:01] <MuPie> hehehehehe
[20:51:39] <MuPie> I was told there are no women on the internet
[20:51:45] <andypugh> It doesn't help that she is called "Kate" and I am a Blackadder fan.
[20:52:07] <MuPie> not BOB?
[20:52:13] <andypugh> Quite :-)
[20:53:13] <andypugh> Anyway, moopy, I think the issue is that the Powers That Be (ie not me) are not keen to put code that doesn't exactly work and that nobody is comitted to support, in the EMC2 code-base
[20:54:03] <MuPie> I get the feeling that may have been what was said last time I asked about this
[20:54:08] <andypugh> (And to be fair to pncconf, it has the task of tracking all the Mesa cards, and Pete keeps inventing new ones)
[20:54:41] <MuPie> it just seems a shame that the code will probably be left to rot as it is then
[20:55:07] <sarariman_seb> rotting code makes me sad :-(
[20:55:33] <MuPie> I may pick it up again in a year or so, if I get time
[20:56:30] <andypugh> Ah, while I have seb on the line.:
[20:57:03] <MuPie> what makes me sad is I spent quite a lot of time on the code and feel it could be useful to someone else
[20:57:06] <andypugh> The pin naming in hm2 doesn't match the canonical naming convention...
[20:58:10] <andypugh> (which, of course, I can't currently find)
[20:58:19] <sarariman_seb> MuPie, if it's in a usable, maintainable state, then maybe it should go in master? but if it's kind of broken and you dont want to fix it, then it probably shouldnt
[20:58:33] <sarariman_seb> broken code is often worse than no code, when you have non-developer users
[20:58:52] <andypugh> Anyway, that document deprecates _ and says that in the future (ie 2.2 :-) all pin names will swap _ to -
[20:58:57] <sarariman_seb> andypugh, yeah i think i used the wrong separator, _ instead of - or the other way around
[20:59:11] <sarariman_seb> my bad :-(
[20:59:36] <andypugh> I am thinking that we could change _everything_ but at the same time make find_pin_by_name -_ agnostic.
[21:00:09] <MuPie> I will leave it for now then, maybe comeback and ask the same question again in a year or so if I get some time to get halitosis more usable
[21:00:25] <andypugh> I know of no situations where there is ambiguity, and hate to think how many man-hours have been lost to that confusion.
[21:00:39] <sarariman_seb> MuPie, if you fix it and make it usable, then yes please do show it around again
[21:01:21] <sarariman_seb> andypugh, i'd much rather have it be consistent and explicit rather than inconsistent and smooth it over with agnosticism
[21:01:24] <sarariman_seb> (if that makes sense)
[21:02:36] <andypugh> I was suggesting that we change all the demo configs and drivers, but modify the function to accept them both so that existing configs are not broken.
[21:03:32] <andypugh> strcmp("pin_out", "pin-out") == 0 for a suitable version of strcmp
[21:04:23] <andypugh> hm2_pci and hm2_7i43 is a more vexing question.
