[13:31:20] <steve_stallings> The idea of a software watchdog was discussed at the 2009 EMC Fest in Wichita. At the time I suggested something similar to the hardware E-Stop safety chain.
[13:31:30] <steve_stallings> The first module in the chain would product the alternating signal that should be propagated through all modules that participate in the chain. The last module would be the HAL component that sends the signal to the hardware world outside.
[13:31:41] <steve_stallings> It is significant that the signal which gets propagated be an alternating signal, with each pass through the chain not actually changing the signal. Only the first module changes the signal. This way, if any module fails by outputting a static value, the final output will no longer alternate and the hardware device will detect the failure of the signal to alternate.
[13:31:48] <steve_stallings> Perhaps there could be a "watchdog chain server" and modules which support the watchdog function could register with the server. Older modules would simply not register and not be monitored. As usual, I have ideas, but never code anything to implement them.
