[17:03:34] <cncbasher> wonder if anyone's using a 7i43 stepper system under 2.6 ? .. i find the hm2-stepper config works fine , but my own will not move the steppers , both using the same custom BIT file

[17:18:30] <cncbasher> the custom BIT file works fine with the hm2-stepper config

[17:41:42] <cncbasher> no watch dog's running fine
[17:48:02] <micges> hmm
[17:48:07] <micges> configs seems fine
[17:48:36] <cncbasher> thought i might be missing something obvious
[17:49:12] <cncbasher> or if some new enable signal has been added
[17:49:23] <micges> motors are not moving at all?
[17:49:34] <cncbasher> no not moving at all
[17:49:57] <cncbasher> switch to the preconfigured hm2-stepper config
[17:50:23] <cncbasher> change to my custom bit file in the INI file , and it runs fine
[17:51:09] <cncbasher> but of course the hm2 config does not have any limits etc
[17:53:24] <micges> change line: 'loadrt hostmot2' to : loadrt hostmot2 debug_idrom=1, debug_module_descriptors=1, debug_modules=1
[17:53:29] <cncbasher> my thoughts were it could be soft limits , but with overide , i should still be able to move the steppers
[17:53:55] <micges> and pastebin output from command 'dmesg'
[17:54:00] <cncbasher> ok
[17:54:22] <micges> you don't have any warning messages? you can enable machine via F2 button?

[18:12:13] <micges> weird
[18:12:25] <micges> everything seems ok
[18:19:39] <cncbasher> i have just try'd removing all the limit switches , so they do not have an effect , with still no luck
[18:19:49] <cncbasher> haha , seems to be my luck today
[18:20:37] <cncbasher> i am also trying to relate the hm2 stepper config to the standard reproduced by pncconf
[18:20:43] <cncbasher> and try and compare them
[18:21:41] <cncbasher> the hm2 stepper configs seem to be cryptic to me at the moment
[18:23:01] <cncbasher> thanks for your kind assistance , and giving them a look over
[18:28:13] <micges> try compare outputs from command 'halcmd show pin hm2' from those two configs

[22:00:34] <andypugh> jepler: Do you have a few minutes?
[22:04:51] -!- OoBIGeye has quit [Ping timeout: 255 seconds]
[22:11:57] <jepler> andypugh: sure
[22:13:10] <andypugh> I am wondering why you think that the 7i65 card (which uses a comp driver to hook into the hm2 SPI functions) shouldn't export functions to HAL.
[22:14:18] <andypugh> I think I can probably figure out how to do it, but it seems quite a lot of work to make a HAL component that behaves differently to most.
[22:14:40] <andypugh> Though there are other HAL components that do not get added to a thread, such as trivkins.
[22:14:45] -!- OoBIGeye has quit [Ping timeout: 255 seconds]
[22:16:05] <jepler> basically, I think that the read and write functions of the board should take care of everything
[22:16:37] <andypugh> I am wanting to start another driver for the UART functions (somebody has hardware, and needs a driver) which sits on top of the same sort of structure, so want to know what that structure is going to be.
[22:16:41] <jepler> it's an accident of history that e.g., stepgen is part of the base hm2 driver (so no need to 'addf' it) while the 7i65 driver is not
[22:17:53] <jepler> if you structure the driver so that the non-monolithic sub-drivers do their own I/O from their own hal functions, I'm not sure how you fit that into tram
[22:18:50] <jepler> (fit into the design, I'm not saying "tram will get full" when I say "fit")
[22:19:05] <andypugh> Yes and no. "stepgen" controls a function running on the FPGA, and then other HAL functions hook into that that do need an addf. BSPI is the function running on the FPGA, and mesa_7i65 is a HAL component that uses that interface.
[22:19:42] -!- OoBIGeye has quit [Ping timeout: 255 seconds]
[22:20:33] <andypugh> The BSPI driver exports a TRAM registration function, and the base Hostmot2 code has been modified to allow on-the-fly TRAM reallocation.
[22:20:43] <jepler> can you tell me what the use case is for having a stepgen and a 7i65 both in a system, but not having their respective reads and writes right next to each other?
[22:21:27] <jepler> i.e., is there a case where you'de addf the stepgen read in one thread and the 7i65 read in a different thread ever?
[22:21:43] <andypugh> I can't think of one, but users are odd creatures.
[22:22:19] <andypugh> But, conversely, you do need to loadrt the mesa_7i65 component, and it might look odd not to then addf it.
[22:23:17] <jepler> I guess I don't see that as a point of 100% consistency
[22:23:24] <jepler> you don't addf anything from the hostmot2 component, for instance
[22:23:32] <jepler> you already mentioned another one with no functions, kinematics
[22:23:43] <andypugh> No, but you do addf hm2_pci.
[22:26:35] <andypugh> A secondary point it that I know no Python and don't know how to get comp to export no functions. It also means that BSPI drivers need to be written in a funny way in Comp. My idea was to make it reasonably easy for anyone to hook SPI devices up to a Mesa card, and having to use comp in a manner contrary to its manpage seems like a disadvatage.
[22:26:52] <jepler> do you think the driver will function properly if the hostmot2 read function is in one thread and the 7i65 write function is in another thread, so that the one in the fast thread can interrupt the one in the slow thread?
[22:27:27] <jepler> (of course, I don't know whether hostmot2 functions right if you read it in one thread and write it in a different thread..)
[22:27:53] -!- Justin_CNC has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[22:28:15] <jepler> I am pretty sure I'm just rehashing things I've said before, so if you remain unconvinced by my arguments, you know the problem better than I do. Feel free to do it your way.
[22:29:45] <andypugh> I think it would be OK, actually. All it can ever do is read valid data from the registers (TRAM read doesn't move) and write valid data to the TRAM. If it does it a few hundred times before the data actually gets transferred, so be it.
[22:30:06] <andypugh> And no, as far as I know we have never had this discussion.
[22:30:43] <andypugh> And you are starting to persuade me.
[22:31:30] <andypugh> It's the changes required to Comp, and the unorthodox structure of the Comp that concern me, and that's yoiur baby.
[22:32:14] <jepler> well, let's talk about that part then.

[22:32:36] <andypugh> I have already started on the linked-list of function calls inside the driver.
[22:32:55] <andypugh> But then realised I didn't know how to populate it.
[22:32:55] <jepler> we're talking about this error, right?
[22:32:55] <jepler> Realtime component must have at least one function
[22:32:58] <jepler> (from comp)
[22:33:04] <andypugh> Aye
[22:33:52] <jepler> that's a sanity check in comp that could easily just be removed
[22:34:00] <jepler> same for the "at least one pin" check, if it comes to that
[22:34:00] <andypugh> The docs specify mesa_7i65 as an example component, so the other points can be addressed by commenting that file "No functions declared, functions register themselves...."
[22:34:31] <jepler> these components will create pins, right?
[22:34:51] <andypugh> I can't imagine a BSPI function not exporting pins, what would be the point? They are far more likely to export too many pins.
[22:35:42] <andypugh> The basic function of the sub-driver is to link the pinless bspi component to HAL.
[22:37:46] -!- OoBIGeye has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
[22:38:22] <jepler> hm, I have to tickle comp in a few places before it's happy to produce a component with no functions
[22:40:44] <jepler> http://emergent.unpy.net/files/sandbox/0001-comp-allow-components-with-no-functions.patch
[22:42:25] <andypugh> Help out a git-noob here. Would I patch a branch from master with that, then rebase my dev branch onto the new branch?
[22:43:54] <jepler> maybe I should just push it
[22:43:57] <jepler> is this 2.5 work or master?
[22:44:04] <jepler> (your part aka the hard aprt)
[22:44:04] <andypugh> master
[22:44:29] <andypugh> I think 2.5 might be a bit too imminent for something this big.
[22:44:30] <jepler> let me just push it instead
[22:44:49] <jepler> and then you could continue by pulling and rebasing
[22:45:00] <andypugh> OK.
