[03:43:25] <cradek> NB in no mode is the rotation limited to one turn, which I think might be what you meant above

[14:05:39] <jepler> hmm. according to this, AMD Turbo CORE changes the CPU frequency without notifying the operating system. That'd play hell with us, as we use the TSC as a measure of real-world time..
[14:06:58] <cradek> ick
[14:07:42] <jepler> or maybe this is not a problem, I can't quite make sense of
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rdtsc#Implementation_in_various_processors which suggests that these same CPUs have a constant TSC
[14:08:31] <jepler> the turbo core article I was reading is here:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3641/amd-divulges-phenom-ii-x6-secrets-turbo-core-enabled
[14:09:06] <jepler> my AMD (older than Turbo CORE) has this in cpuid: constant_tsc nonstop_tsc

[22:43:24] <JT-Shop> KimK: do you want to take a crack at writing something to explain how cutter orientation effects cutter comp for a lathe?
[22:44:42] <KimK> JT-Shop: OK, sure. Is there something written there to begin with? I forgot what was in lathe user.
[22:45:26] <JT-Shop> nope blank slate
[22:45:44] <KimK> (I'm running through all this stuff looking for problems and not really reading it!)
[22:46:34] <KimK> What can you tell me about it to get me started?
[22:46:35] <JT-Shop> as far as I can figure out with empirical evidence is that orientation 2 and orientation 6 give a different path because of the "controlled point"
[22:46:54] <JT-Shop> I've not tested other orientations except 0 which does as one expects
[22:47:13] <KimK> Maybe I'll have to set up lathe sim here?
[22:47:52] <JT-Shop> 2 is left and back side of the cutter, so there is no offset on those sides
[22:48:28] <JT-Shop> 6 is backside and center so it offsets equal amounts left and right but nothing in the X direction
[22:49:06] <JT-Shop> I created a path with and without comp to see the different paths today using G42.1 Dxxx Px
[22:49:22] <KimK> I'll have to look at a picture to make sense of it. Does it sound right to you? It sounds a little hinky to me at first hearing.

[22:49:40] <JT-Shop> yes it makes perfect sense to me
[22:49:54] <KimK> OK, that's good.
[22:50:05] <JT-Shop> look at the diagram showing the cutter orientations and the controlled point
[22:50:11] <KimK> Not looking for potential errors, at least.
[22:51:20] <JT-Shop> I was getting some experience (not getting what I expected) this morning and pursued why which led to spelling errors...
[22:51:47] <JT-Shop> you would have to have been there
[22:52:26] <KimK> Yes, that "controlled point", I'd like to change that. Maybe "virtual tooltip" or something, not sure what. Also need to bring in what, "tool radius center"? Not sure.
[22:52:37] <JT-Shop> no, it is the controlled point
[22:53:03] <JT-Shop> that is the correct term
[22:53:27] <KimK> Not in the manuals I've run into. Never heard it before EMC2.
[22:53:41] <JT-Shop> set up a lathe sim and you will see
[22:53:57] <JT-Shop> you won't see it in a mill manual I'm sure
[22:54:08] <JT-Shop> only applies to a lathe
[22:54:09] <KimK> No, I mean lathe manuals.
[22:54:55] <KimK> It does work that way when you're running without comp though.
[22:55:07] <JT-Shop> I never got to read my lathe programming manual... never got that far with the original control
[22:55:29] <KimK> Maybe I need to draw some diagrams to add to that.
[22:55:49] <JT-Shop> or some screen shots
[22:55:55] <KimK> I'm already not too happy with the lathe diagrams we have.
[22:56:05] <KimK> Some of them, anyway.
[22:56:21] <JT-Shop> I have a couple that I cobbled together but they are not that good
[22:56:55] <KimK> Is there any kind of a schedule for releasing 2.5.0?
[22:57:00] <JT-Shop> http://www.linuxcnc.org/docview/html/lathe_lathe-user.html#r1_7_1
[22:57:12] <JT-Shop> mum seems to be the word on that
[22:58:56] <JT-Shop> I fail to mention in that section how orientation changes the cutter offset
[22:59:06] * JT-Shop gets back to work
[22:59:47] <KimK> OK, JT, I'll look into it. What did you use to draw those diagrams?

[23:26:35] <KimK> My gripe with that "controlled point" language is that it implies that it was carefully planned out that way. Even "virtual tooltip" is not great in that regard. It should really be called "inadvertent point" or "accidental tooltip" or something. It's what you have initially before you make an effort to do some correction. Maybe "uncorrected tooltip"?
