[02:35:08] <KimK> Anybody still around? I was fixing an example from docs that shows only A & Z as parallel port inputs to a hal encoder. Does that work? The example doesn't treat this as anything remarkable. Why doesn't it toggle between two illegal transitions and fail to rotate/count? Does the index pulse have anything to do with it? I have never used raw parallel port encoder inputs, maybe I should fool around with one sometime.
[02:35:14] -!- ries has quit [Quit: ries]
[02:37:38] -!- Valen has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[02:39:56] <KimK> I imagine quadrature as a four-state diagram, like a baseball diamond, where you can run CCW from home to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and back to home. And you can even run backwards, from home to 3rd, 2nd, 1st, and back home. But there's no running from home to 2nd, or from 3rd to 1st, etc., if you see what I mean.
[02:40:52] <KimK> Does hal's counter allow that? I guess it must if the example works.
[02:43:06] <KimK> Of course you wouldn't get directional information, but that's a separate problem.
[02:43:15] -!- tom3p [tom3p!~tomp@64.134.175.83] has joined #emc-devel
[02:55:35] <KimK> Ah! Perhaps the velocity output works, but not the position (remains the same)? No, wait, the *sign* of the velocity would still be unknown. Am I missing something simple here?
[03:00:51] -!- rooks has quit [Read error: Operation timed out]

[03:08:05] -!- mozmck has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
[03:09:22] <skunkworks> Hi KimK
[03:09:55] <KimK> Hi Sam. Do you have any advice for me on my above dilemma?
[03:11:28] <KimK> And how's it going in the world of K&T?
[03:11:51] <skunkworks> I know there was one person using it for threading on a lathe - and index and just A.
[03:12:10] <skunkworks> an index and just a
[03:12:49] <skunkworks> k&t has been running great!
[03:13:46] <KimK> I feel like the guy in that old joke who is shown a thermos bottle for the first time: "It keeps hot things hot, and cold things cold. But how does it know?"
[03:14:09] <skunkworks> it lets you do more accurate lathe threading without actually having a full abz encoder
[03:14:31] <KimK> Yes, "but how does it know", lol
[03:14:58] <skunkworks> heh - I have not looked at it that close - I thought you put in some sort of counter mode
[03:16:03] <KimK> Glad to hear you're getting good use out of the K&T, have any interesting projects come along for it yet? (You've probably gotten tired of drilling test holes, lol)
[03:17:22] <skunkworks> encoder.N.counter-mode
[03:18:18] <KimK> Ah, excellent, I'll take a look, thanks!
[03:18:41] <skunkworks> still working on a backlog of personal projects.. been nice for troubleshooting :)
[03:21:16] <KimK> Have you guys reached a decision yet on the lathe drives? Whether to try the hydraulic drives first, I mean?
[03:29:56] <cradek> KimK: see the encoder.N.counter-mode docs in man encoder
[03:30:07] <cradek> oh I see skunkworks said that already
[03:30:11] <KimK> Oh, and can I simply say (for a pin) "net set-counter-mode encoder.0.counter-mode <= true"
[03:30:36] <cradek> you can setp a pin, just like you setp a parameter
[03:30:40] <KimK> Hi cradek thanks, good to have you stop by. How are things?
[03:30:43] <cradek> a pin with nothing connected works just like a parameter
[03:31:04] <KimK> Ah, good, excellent. I'll get the book's example into shape yet.
[03:31:23] <cradek> things are adequate for my liking, I guess
[03:31:57] <KimK> Haha, yes, you're not a beginner, and all your machines are running!
[03:33:15] <KimK> Who's the GLA on ClassicLadder? Morley?
