[00:03:28] <andypugh> Pity that almost no boards have IDE any more either :-)
[00:04:15] -!- theorbtwo has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
[00:04:22] theorb is now known as theorbtwo
[00:05:43] <andypugh> Oh, what fun. The RT-USB makefile wants to move kernel code files around, and hasn't the rights.
[00:06:13] <andypugh> If I sudo make then RTAI isn't in the PATH any more (is that right?_
[00:10:03] -!- servos4ever has quit [Quit: ChatZilla 0.9.85 [SeaMonkey 2.0.11/20101206162726]]
[00:10:35] <voxadam> I agree it's not an idea that devs with decent hardware might be interested in but from time to time I've read the forums (waste of time) and the hardware folks are using is mildly disturbing. I have a lot of old hardware laying around, the stand for my monitor is an old pizza box SPARCstation 20 but who in their right builds a mill with all-thread for screws and controls it with an old PII?
[00:10:50] <voxadam> I'll quit ranting now.
[00:31:46] -!- Emcrules_Laptop has quit [Ping timeout: 272 seconds]
[00:39:17] -!- skunkworks [skunkworks!~chatzilla@str-bb-cable-south2-static-6-412.dsl.airstreamcomm.net] has joined #emc-devel
[01:04:02] <KimK> voxadam: No, rant on, that's an interesting article. In fact I was wondering if something like this wouldn't be possible with a SCSI card, but yours is even simpler, and more commonly available.
[01:05:31] <voxadam> Interesting thought...
[01:05:42] -!- andypugh has quit [Quit: andypugh]
[01:08:43] -!- Dannyboy has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[01:08:55] <KimK> Problem is that the later model higher speed SCSI cards would need the proper kind of low voltage differential drivers and receivers, so, more hassle. Or choose only the older cards? Not good either.

[03:40:46] -!- danimal_garage has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]
[03:44:31] <cradek> wonder if anyone has fixed and tested their fix to pid
[03:51:45] -!- OoBIGeye has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
[03:56:25] -!- OoBIGeye has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
[03:57:00] <KimK> cradek: Hi Chris. Yes, that was a pretty major bug to find so late in EMC2's development. Congrats to the finders and the fixers (if fixed yet?). Good thing that 2.5.0 hadn't come out yet.

[15:09:26] <jepler> what should be the bname of the header that declares hal_parport_get / hal_parport_release?
[15:09:47] <jepler> right now it's parport_common.h but it should probably have a different name when it is installed by the emc2-dev package..
[15:11:02] <jepler> is hal_parport.h too confusing due to there being a hal_parport driver as well?

[22:52:41] <skunkworks> cradek: did you make any sence of the s-curve acceleration? (if you looked at it)
[22:54:16] <skunkworks> sense
[22:54:36] <andypugh> I assume that is jerk limitation? Unless there have been new laws of motion invented since I left college, I don't see the point.
[22:54:47] -!- Fox_Muldr has quit [Ping timeout: 276 seconds]
[22:55:22] <skunkworks> I think on cradeks machine - the acceleration can be set so high that trapizoidal acceleration will move it around the floor. ;)
[22:55:57] <micges> andypugh: jerk limited is very needed in emc
[22:56:20] <cradek> skunkworks: I looked at it briefly - haven't tried to run it
[22:56:30] <andypugh> Who would that leave though?
[22:57:06] <skunkworks> bbl
[22:59:19] <skunkworks> I think micges also has some machines that are high acceleration
[22:59:58] <micges> yep
[23:00:13] <micges> up to 1.5g for now
[23:01:02] <micges> I killed few mechanics becouse of lack of jerk limited acc
[23:03:16] <andypugh> Check my maths...
[23:03:30] -!- skunkworks has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
[23:03:35] <andypugh> I think I made a 2500G machine once.
[23:03:44] <andypugh> (0 to 50 mph in 10mm)
[23:04:36] <micges> what was that thing?
[23:05:00] -!- Dannyboy has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[23:05:09] <andypugh> A cam plastometer
[23:08:15] <andypugh> But whereas they generally use a hydraulic motor, mine used a 100kg flywheel @ 3000rpm and a pneumatic clutch.
[23:12:10] -!- JT-Shop [JT-Shop!~chatzilla@216-41-143-50.semo.net] has joined #emc-devel
[23:18:19] <archivist> I read somewhere about a flywheel friction welder, the machine rolled over on a fault
[23:19:34] <andypugh> You can extract infinite power from a flywheel, limited only by the shaft strength.
[23:20:26] <archivist> iirc it ripped the bolts out the floor
[23:22:01] <cradek> I think jerk limiting would be useful for fast heavy machines - for everyone else it just makes everything slower for no reason
[23:22:53] <andypugh> Does it actually reduce any forces? ( I realise it limits rate of change of force)
[23:24:00] <andypugh> I guess if things are appreciably elastic it can limit how fast they return
[23:24:02] -!- theorbtwo has quit [Ping timeout: 276 seconds]
[23:24:29] <micges> cradek: I've just noticed that there is no docs what to connect to hal to use rigid tapping and spindle synced moves
[23:24:38] <micges> or I can't find it
[23:24:44] <cradek> not sure about the physics but I think it would reduce the banging on accel
[23:25:08] <cradek> micges: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.4/html/config_emc2hal.html
[23:25:19] <archivist> thinking about wrong tools for the job, will counters roll over on that guys generator control on the list
[23:26:09] <andypugh> No
[23:26:48] <andypugh> The encoders all use 64 bits internally now. That's half a million years at 4000 counts and 3000rpm
[23:26:51] <archivist> I really think he is using the wrong sledge hammer
[23:27:09] <andypugh> Arduino is overkill, but easy
[23:27:12] <cradek> sure is nice to have enough bits
[23:27:45] -!- EDocToor has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[23:28:06] <micges> cradek: ah there it is, thanks
[23:28:08] <archivist> a mechanical governor is good enough for most gensets
[23:28:42] <cradek> micges: it might be slightly hidden...
[23:29:22] <micges> yep, a note in gcode section would help
[23:30:50] -!- tlab has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[23:31:51] <andypugh> micges: There is also http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/examples_spindle.html
[23:32:11] -!- odiug has quit [Ping timeout: 255 seconds]
[23:32:19] -!- e3m has quit [Quit: Light travels faster then sound, which is why some people appear bright, until you hear them speak]
[23:33:41] <micges> andypugh: thanks
[23:35:33] <andypugh> The EMC2 docs are great, there is a page or several for every need. They are a bugger to find sometimes, though.
[23:36:01] <micges> yes I think the same
